Re:Ween yourself from the Toob.
...And you've also missed shows like Highlander, Buffy, Angel, Smallville, Stargate SG-1, 24, Deadwood, Farscape, South Park, Lost, Simpsons (I don't watch it), yada yada... (And I know I'm still missing some noteworthy entertainment...)
...But were spared the heartbreak of seeing Cupid (1999) and Firefly killed, or see Ally McBeal or Dawson's Creek crater after the first season...
...And miss being informed by programs like Frontline, 60 Minutes, NOW, those documentary channels (Discovery, History), and primary sources like CSPAN... (Didn't realize how close Canada came to breaking up until I watched it live...)
I honestly don't envy their ability to keep track of the latest shows.
...and why admire someone who can name all the US senators, or the Periodic Table of Elements, or the moons of Jupiter & Saturn (all 93?), or the capitals of all the nations of a continent? If you can't directly apply it, its no different than being able to recall sports statistics, or TV episodes. TV entertainment can be a form of cultural enhancement, just like novels and plays. The trick is finding the worthwhile stuff.
For me, I haven't had cable for years. But as long as I have the Internet and recappers, I'll always be able to enjoy the best of what little TV has to offer...
Here may be a cool topic. What TV episodes actually changed your perspective on how you view or approach life?
For myself, I found ST:TNG Tapestry, Stargate SG-1 Absolute Power left an impression, as did ST:TOS Let This be your Last Battlefield if only that some people really think there's a difference whether you're black on the left side or the right side...
Come to think of it, Americans might have something to learn from ST:TOS Squire of Gothos (Its maturity in action, not absolute power that defines character or refinement), and ST:TOS Devil in the Dark (Think of different cultures as different races; stop looking to destroy or dominate the other).

There's a lesson to be learned here
As that economic genius, Eric Cartman taught us:
1) Get something other people love
2) Don't let them use it
3) Profit!
It doesn't hurt if you are running a fund drive at the same time, either. -
Let's hope it's not the
monkey in "hooked on Monkey Phonics" that masturbates instead of helping Cartman spell "chair"

wolfram.com?
I wonder if "Wolfram Research" had a trademark dispute (or at least cause for one) with the producers of "Angel".

Asymmetric Warfare & Dirty BombsI believe the much more prevalent fear in the intelligence community is the fear of a dirty bomb that would spread radioactive material over a large area. The technological knowhow needed is minimal and logistics required is simple. Hence the yellowcake story a few years ago.
Keep in mind that when you think of terrorism you are talking a form a asymmetric warefare with the primary goal of causing fear. So terrorists often use low tech means to get as many people as possible fearful.
The press and hollywood are horrible on this issue. From the current series of 24 that misinfoms about turning all the nation's nuclear power stations into atomic bombs with a mythical bloackbox "Dobson device". Movies like True Lies that make it look like an Joe Shmo can hijack a train, grab a nuke bobmb and use it.
- So, Nuclear Power Nuclear Bomb
- Terrorists would rather kill civilians
- Even if you could manage to steal an ICBM very few people in the world could figure out what to do with it.
Hoooookay?

Re:I'm pissed.
He's probably talking about this epsidode:
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - Game
"The squad is at a loss on what to do with a violent homicide when Stabler's son points out that the event is straight out of a video game. Interviewing the game's creators leads them to a former employee, who then leads them (with a few other steps along the way) to a teenage couple who claim to be unable to distinguish fantasy from reality."
I saw the episode, the game in question is caricature of GTA. In the game, and the crime in the episode, the character(s) drives down a woman (hooker?) and then beats her up and steals her money. -

360 degrees = round X-Boxen?
I'm sure this will be WAY better than the Okama Gamesphere.
Cartman *playing GameSphere*: Man, Towelie, you're the worst character ever.
Towelie: Yeah, I know. -
Three Stooges Syndrome
Like they say in South Park "Simpsons did it". I recall Mr. Burns going to the Mayo clinic and finding out he has every disease known and unknown to man, it's just that they are all existing and trying to get through the door together it's just that they are all existing and trying to get through the door together in something the doctor's call "Three Stooges Syndrome".
-
The Simpsons were ahead of their time --They predicted it 5 years ago --
Episode 238: The Mansion FamilyMeanwhile at the Mayo Clinic, Mr. Burns is told he has every disease known and unknown to man, it's just that they are all existing and trying to get through the door together in something the doctor's call "Three Stooges Syndrome". The doctors do warn him that a stiff breeze could kill him.

Cowboy Bebop Edisode 3, Honky Tonk Woman
Offtopic, my arse.

Re:an idea
Also, in the end of the Futurama episode The Farnsworth Parabox there is a box that contains the universe where the box itself is.

Oblig. Simpsons Quote
Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan? Save me Chaka Khan!
Forgive me, I don't usually jump on any bandwagons. But this ep was on last night. -
This is not a flame.
Th eonly episode I ever saw was two bad actors in a shuttle, running out of oxygen because a tiny tiny black hole pierced a hole in thier hull, which they used some poncy stupid cheesey spread to fix it...
It was the worst thing I have ever seen in my life, I had to shave my cornea just to feel clean again.
This is not a flame, I admit to only seeing about 5% of one episode, but it was so bad that I couldn't watch anymore, I didn't even see the quantum leap dude, and no matter how much quantum leap PWNED I do not want to see this.
Man, this sounds like the last ditch effort to save eldorado! :-)
Why the obsession? Bring back roland rat, I say.
*me realises that slating ST or SW is a complete beg for a -tan(90) mod, and about 50 thousand accounts adding me to thier enemy lists...*
Give me a holographic doctor and a nypho borg *ANYDAY*. (not in the same context *cough*) -
Re:One Word
Actually, I believe he did make it home. Six years after the show ended, they made a TV movie called Project: Alf.

Re:This is really sad.
" This just goes to show you that when television gets better, less people watch it."
I used to watch STE, but once it was in a time slot against "the happy colors show" I knew I'd never see it again. Then "the happy colors show" became "a box full of puppies" which in turn gave way to "animal close-ups with a wide angle lens". But seriously, have you seen what this kid Craig is doing? He's a freakin' genius... -

Re:End of an era?
I bet it was between Star Trek (The Original Series) and Star Trek: TNG.
Actually there was a decent Star Trek animated series which ran in 1973-1974. It had a lot of the original actors doing the voices of their characters. -
Re:Why don't they partner with IMDB?
It seems like a no-brainer to me -- every time we watch a movie, DVD, TiVo, whatever, we run to IMDB to look up all kinds of info on all the actors, the writers, etc.
I was just thinking something similar to this the other day: if they were tied to IMDB for movies, they could be tied to sites such as http://www.tvtome.com/ for TV series episodes. It would also be a good way for them to pick up some ad revenue as well, I think....
I mean, let's say that you set up your Tivo with a "season pass" for a particular show. If they were connected to tvtome, they might provide you a list of *ALL* episodes for that show. That way you could tell whether a particular episode was a new one, or an old one (and if so, from which season).
Heck, you might even have some way of "checking off" which episodes you've already recorded/watched (such as, for example, for a series in syndication).

Actually...
there's probably a a cancelled CBS comedy.

It Wasn't Tartakovski
You're sort of close, but PPG wasn't created by Genndy Tartakovski, it was created by Craig McCracken. Genndy created Dexter's Laboratory, which McCracken also worked on however. Personally, I find that Grievous is more closely related to Samurai Jack anyway, another Tartakovski show.

Sounds like season 1, episode 3, "Squeeze".

Gave Up A Long Time Ago
I gave up on Enterprise halfway into the first season. I enjoyed Star Trek V'ger when I stopped thinking of it as Star Trek. I gave up on DS9 when it turned into a Bajoran soap opera, but the turning point to suck came in Star Trek the Next Generation when they had that retarded episode, Force of Nature, that warp drive was wearing out the fabric of spacetime. I think they ignored it after a while, the way they ignored the Organians after the first Klingon episode in classic Trek. Doctor Flox is even more annoying that Neelix. So killing Enterprise would be a mercy. Though I think they could save the show by having Six of Nine hot oil wrestle with T'Pol in a remake of "Gamesters of Triskelion" using time travel to grab competitors. I'd wager 30 quatloos on that.

Re:first post
Great, just what we need. Gigantic walking cornstalk armies.
-
Re:Wow, the US are behind...
In fact, SkyOne viewers only have 2 episodes left to watch from the first season. The first season order was for 13 episodes. Episode 12 is showing next Monday. Check out TV Tome.

Re:Around the room reactions ...
Any reference to Red Dwarf is priceless. Smeghead!

Rerun?
South Park already did this...

Re:Crossing Over Must Die
It's Official!
John Edward IS the Biggest Douche in The Universe!
And if the boys from South Park aren't authoritative enough for you, Penn & Teller say the same thing .

Re:White holes
There is enough tape of George embarrasing himself you could do a multiweek miniseries.
Well, 8 weeks anyway...

Re:Not to worry...
I am probably the only person who got that simpsons reference... If I could, I would mod you funny... for those that missed it...

>Sure it would take many airplanes crashing into Super Centers all across the country to realistically bring down WalMart.
You seem to be forgetting that every Walmart has a heart in the TV department. Destroy it and you will destroy the WalMart. -
Re:I Don't Understand Something...
Actually, for a good critique of the foolishness behind profanity concerns, I would recommend the Penn & Teller: Bullshit! episode called Profanity before South Park. I imagine that, judging by the name of the show, their position won't come as a shock. South Park is funny and all, but if you want people to actually consider your point analytically, it helps if you don't have a singing and dancing log of shit on your show.
-
Re:Instead of TheivesIt is actually 3-steps to profit. And it originated on South Park.
Here's a link to the synopsis of the show.

Re:Amen to that!
Some people consider file sharing progressive taxation, if not outright advertising.
I would wager that most of the big software vendors enjoying immense market share wouldn't be doing so were it not for "piracy", "warez" and file sharing, getting their stuff into the hands of those talented enough to use it, but poor enough to be unable to afford it.
Likewise there are musicians and artists who would have vanished from the scene, if it hadn't been for downloadable files to alert and encourage us to seek out and support their efforts.
I know for a fact that I would not be buying the work of Frank Cho, or Philippe Buchet had I not first found them as scans in the a.b hierarchy.
Likewise, Goldfrapp and Invader Zim.
I didn't hear Goldfrapp on the local FM or catch the original airing of Zim on Nick. But I have bought all of the Goldfrapp catalog (and sold some of it too), as well as buying all 3 DVD's of Zim, and the only reason I did was...."piracy" alerted me to their existence.
This whole copyright/intellectual property thing strikes me the same way as the "War on Drugs" has.
The little people get to watch the spectacle of a bunch of suits bandying about a bunch of numbers pulled from their collective anuses, patting themselves on their backs after criminalizing something that only threatened their control. -
Babylon 5 + Rangers + Crusade
Babylon 5 was a five year show, with two additional spin-offs such as Babylon 5 - The Legends of the Rangers, and Crusade, including 5 or 6 TV movies. Not bad...

this story reminds me of the seinfeld episode where kramer uses the bathroom in an office building and then just starts working for the company.

ballhoggers
The NBA is the monopoly. If you want to start a basketball business, you have to play the NBA's game, including bribes, rules which can keep a specific team from winning or recruiting winners, and a club of competitors who decide who gets to compete, in what cities, and across the country. They're almost as sinister as the MLB.

Re:Damn it!
> How am I going to watch Enterprise now?
It starts with a "U" and rhymes with "BLUESNET". ;-) Seriously, *everything* gets posted there a day or two after it's released. Just follow the white rabbit to a big premium news server provider and download anything you want without the possibility of the MPAA or RIAA ever seeing your IP.
All these episodes of Hex and uncensored Degrassi: The Next Generation and advance Battlestar Galactica I'm watching in the U.S. have to come from somewhere...
Funny how Europeans always complain about not getting American shows in a timely manner, when most of what I want are Canadian and British shows I can't get here (or can't get uncensored, like Degrassi), or U.S. shows that were cancelled here before showing all episodes but have all the episodes shown overseas (like the sexiest teen show ever on American network TV, The Opposite Sex). The new *Battlestar Galactica* is the only exception, but it's a joint U.S.-British production shown in Britain first...
I'd gladly pay for subscrptions to premium British and Canadian TV services if I could, but I'm not allowed thanks to geographically discriminatory content licensing. Content providers need to be pushed into broader worldwide same-date (or at least close--not many months or years difference) availability. Funny how in the era of "free trade" the multimedia content industry is the only one erecting more barriers to trade instead of tearing them down. While geographically I can't just subscribe to Britain's Sky Digital since their satellites aren't positioned for this side of the world, there's no technological reason I shouldn't be able to subscribe to Canadian services. I'm not permitted to by Draconian content licensing.
Artificial trade borders are gone on the Net, but instead of adjusting to exploit it the content industry is trying to protect the old fiefdoms. Instead, it should be doing for downloadable TV what iTunes did for downloadable music. But it's too complacent and protectionist to adapt.
