Re:Interesting science
This is a great breakthrough in analyzing ancient human origins. It would be interesting to use this technique to gain more insight on the origins and migration patterns of early north and south american populations. The Bearing Sea land bridge and south american sea voyage origins are still very confusing and incomplete.
This guy speaks at length about genetic patterns related to migrations into the Americas in some of his lectures.

Re:Zip tie
I just use the normal combo suitcase locks we used to use before the TSA. They're not immune to anything particular, but the TSA will have to cut them off if they want into the bag. It's tamper evident and keeps the bag more secure up to the point they decide they want in. I've only had it cut off maybe 1 in 3 flights, so in general I think I come out ahead. Of course, I'm also aware that the lock is only there for tamper evidence- there's always the old zipper meets bic pen trick.

Re:FUD against Modi
Note that these were riots and clashes, not pogroms from the top. Both communities indulged in violence, although expectedly, the majority community ends up inflicting more damage in the end. India seems to have gotten the riot problem under control since the Gujarat riots.
India's supreme court is a trusted institution. It examined the case for several years and had not found Mr. Modi complicit in the matter. Finding him complicit is akin to finding US presidents *personally* complicit in LA riots, Abu Gharib, Iraq death toll etc.
While you raise some good points against the hyperbole, and I agree that the visa being denied to Modi was bullshit (for pretty much the reasons Fareed Zakaria stated), I think you are understating the role of the BJP in the riots. One of Modi's own ministers was convicted for mass murder.
Even if he was not complicit, Modi's response has been pretty weak, and that is an understatement. The strongest statement he has made to date about the riots was that "it was an act of God" and he compared his sympathies to the horrifying violence against Muslims to that he feels for a dead puppy.
You also paint a rosy picture of the Supreme Court. While the judges may be trusted, there is a great deal of evidence-tampering and witness intimidation, even in the link I posted above.

Doh
Somebody should tell Chris Christie that it might not be a good idea to downgrade from GPS tracking of the smart phone devices or from the malware which jumps over air.
I think that it is a bit naive to believe that you would not be tracked 24/7 already, it should not take a rocket scientist to create a software, when you have the unlimited federal funding (backed by the floating currency). All in all, I personally don't care if somebody wants to track me online or offline, it is their problem, and more likely if that gives someone their daily allowance for food and gadgets, so be it.
In general, going public and saying that we got your back and we track all the bad people and all the good people, is only going to hurt the good, and as long as people have faith that "no-one" knows what they are doing we are safe.
I think that the best idea ever would be that all immigrants would receive a smart phone with GPS chip for free for the duration of their visit, if they dont already own one. Then they would need to return the device when they leave the country. Then also those who don't have the iPhone or Android device, would be covered. And if you would want to be more efficient, you would provide them with prepaid visa or mastercard, which would then give you the "full profile" of their behaviour (more or less).
But what really makes me worried is that if they would treat you, like the FedEx treats their packages.

Re:I'm not a panicky guy but...
Have a look: https://youtu.be/qdYL0_xOXW4?t=286
I see there "Microsoft account" - does it indicate that the username/password live in the cloud? The whole thing is Microsoft OS. Why would I assume that it talks about Microsoft corporation and not local Microsoft software? Does it explain that the account will be used to sign in to both the PC and online services? Until now the accounts used to log in into the operating system were stored locally on that PC or in the logon server that is under control of the LAN admin.
I see there "No account? Create one!" - does that indicate whether the new account is local or live in the cloud?
I see there "Skip this step" - does it indicate that I want to create a local account or does it say that I don't want to create account at this time?
Now can you explain how is that imaginary?

Re:Nothing open to the sky
I think I'd prefer to handle it this way:
https://youtu.be/OGvIaX2SaB8?t...if you haven't seen that movie before, watch from the beginning... great action movie. Can't believe the entire thing is just uploaded onto youtube. The anti piracy people are fucking adorable when they talk about ending that... the black knight from the holy grail if ever there was one.
On topic, I'd seriously prefer something like this for the life sentence people. Exile to some bit of land that is effectively impossible to escape. Let them do whatever they want in there. Skin and eat each other for all I care. Or they can build villages and write poetry. Also fine with me.
on the issue of visitation rooms... I have a very strict notion of what is and is not security. I am a security professional... in IT... but the philosophy is is applicable in other places.
In my world... there is ACTUAL security which is fucking anal, by the book, and offers no opportunity for things to get by me... or there is bullshit security theater which is a waste of everyone's time.
I am quite used to bullshit security being the defacto standard. It being common however does not mean it works, is worthy of any kind of respect, or should be emulated in any regard.
I see bullshit... I roll my eyes... and I say to whomever pays me... "you might as well have nothing if you go with that."
My systems don't get hacked. We do not get viruses. We do not get malware. We do not get people stealing. We do not get people getting more access than they're supposed to have.
I know... bold claims. Unbelievable some might say. But that's coming from cultures where people don't prioritize security. If you take it seriously you can stop this stuff. But you can't break the fucking rules.
If they can TOUCH each other... I have a problem. I mean... do I want to do a full fucking anal cavity search every time on every fucking prisoner every single time they get a visitor? I think not. which means you either dont' let them touch or you accept that drugs are going to flow through the god damn visitor room like crazy.
Fuuuuck Thaaat. Because if they can get drugs in, they can get anything DRUG SIZED into the prison.
This notion of "well it hasn't happened before so it won't happen again" is how 9/11 happened. When you think security... real security... you don't think in terms of what people have done... but what they COULD do. And then you're talking about people getting C4 into the prison or some other explosive. Try a riot with hand grenades.
its only never happened because no one has wanted to do it yet.
They can't touch. If they want to pass objects then they can hand it to an officer and the officer can hand it to whomever after it has been inspected, xrayed, and dog sniffed.

Re:Remember when MS said you really like Vista...
This has been explained to the linux community with some frequency. They don't listen to the problems with wider adoption of their operating system and so we run into problems.

Remember when MS said you really like Vista...
... you just don't "know" you like it? They did this promotion where they sat old people in front of vista machines asked them to derp around on it and then asked them if they liked it... they all said they did... and MS basically said "everyone saying they don't like vista is wrong/a troll/ignorant/etc"... remember that?
Well... same thing seems to be happening again. Consumers are saying "we have problems with these features and we'd like them fixed"... and MS is again saying "I hear you saying you don't want it but I think you're just saying you want me to tell you about how great they are again until you change your mind.

Script Supervisor
In film, there's a person who's entire job is making sure that there is continuity from scene to scene (and from titles to credits). Sometimes they're called "continuity supervisor" but that's becoming less common. Usually, they're known as "script supervisor".
So if a character is wearing a hoodie zipped with the hood up in the closeup, the script supervisor makes sure that in the long shot of the character walking away he still has his hoodie zipped with the hood up. Since almost all movies are shot out of sequence, this becomes very important, and the script supervisor has to note all props, so if there's a glass filled 3/4 on a table where two characters are dining, the glass is still 3/4 full in the reaction shot, even though the reaction shot might be shot weeks or months later. Along with the lighting director, they match shadows and along with the costume director, match clothing.
If you ever want to see what a movie looks like when there is no script supervisor (or the script supervisor is stoned), watch Plan 9 From Outer Space by the great Ed Wood. Errors in continuity cause a very disorienting experience for the viewer. It's a fun movie, especially when you see a car pull up in a graveyard in broad daylight and then there's a cut to people exiting the car and it's the middle of the night. You probably have already heard the stories. Bela Lugosi died during filming, so they shot some scenes with someone who was several inches taller and years younger, except he held his cape in front of his face, Dracula style.
Some film makers have used continuity breaks to great effect. For example, the 1940s art film "Meshes of the Afternoon" by Maya Deren is hallucinogenic in its continuity breaks. This film has influenced generations of filmmakers, including current guys like Darren Aronofsky, David Lynch and even more mainstream filmmakers. Also, a generation of Japanese horror directors pay tribute to Maya Deren and her shocking breaks from continuity.
Here, go watch Meshes of the Afternoon right now and see what I mean. It's only like 10 minutes long, so relax a bit and watch the whole thing. It's very trippy. The music is also very very good.

Re:The reason I don't play WoW anymore, or any MMO
Free to play.
Most games on ios are free to play.Im going to complain about "The Sims FreePlay"
Its naggy to the point of being unplayable or atleast it was a few years ago when I got my ipad 2.You can't buy it and there are no real cheats. (other than paying)
You can buy the sims 3 but then the cheats don't actutally work...(thats why it has a 3 star rating)
Most others are like this.
This video best discribes the state of ftp games on ios:
I didn't know until later that was actually part of one of the spyro games I originally thought it was a parody of how free to play games make people feel.
You get so far and then its not possible to continue without paying but like in the video its a wall that goes straight up as that 99 cents gets you nowhere.
It wouldn't be that bad if it was a trial or demo and then one easy payment of $49.95. But its not its 500 easy payments of $5 $1.99 $2.99 $0.99 and if you were to actually pay enough to actually beat the game you would find that you had paid considerably more than $100.
I still happen to have one of the apps (several still installed actually never bothered to delete them) in question on this ipad I looked in for this post and it said "Welcome back! it has been 1204 days and 0 hours since you left".
Tap Store costs
$49.99 for inspiration
and another $49.99 for coinsIf i remember correctly that was enough to get you several more levels up but was not enough to max it out. That would require even more purchases.
And then one of the better ftp ios games of a few years ago:
Zombie Gunship
2 mil coins $99 or free with purchace of $25 shirtWhy can't they sell a standalone version and go on? Is $50 per gamer really not enough? They already admit that 99% of free to play players never pay a cent. (I am part of that 99% if Im going to pay for a game I best be able to use it)
The costs are simply prohibitive to anyone that realises what they are going in.
How did this get to be so long? It was much shorter when I clicked preview an hour ago.
-
Re:How about this
Working on it. And unlike the "storagedude", I do have the expertise to implement it. I have it about half implemented so far. I have created an object store where every object can have lots of attributes or tags attached to them. Unlike extended attributes, you can actually find things based on them quickly. For example, I can create a container and put 100 million of my data objects in it (photos, mp3s, software, documents, etc.) and find anything and/or everything in just a few seconds. If I had 10 million photos and they all had tags attached, I could find the 50,000 photos of my family vacation in Hawaii in 2010 in just a couple of seconds. Check out the video of my demo at http://youtu.be/2uUvGMUyFhY

Re:I dern't believe it!
Actual evidence? I provided as much as you did if not more. So where you get your pretensions there is a mystery.
As to England holding against a 3rd world power... congrats? If England is actually proud of that, then the bar has really been lowered. England went from a global super power to apparently being giddy that they were able to stand against a third world banana republic with 1960s french hand-me-down tech.
And no, they are not well trained. You can listen to the reports from the British pilots in that war and the Argentinians were making nothing but errors. They had no real tactical doctrine and they were highly reactive which allowed the british to set the pace of battle. That's rookie shit.
As to one sided dogfights... I'll point out again that the US was able to out dogfight migs in Korea with WW2 era ground attack bombers. Training is pretty fucking key. Let me see if I can pull up a documentary about it... I'm sure there is something kicking around the interwebs:
... lolz... it was Vietnam, not Korea... even better:
https://youtu.be/fdYMPqgTfpI?t...You want to see what difference skill makes... Boom. Fucking propeller Sky Raiders vs Mig 17s in the 1960s. Nom Nom Nom.
This is what happens when professional militaries engage newbies.
As to worrying about equal training, not a problem the US has to worry about. Sounds like an arrogant thing to say but its justified.
