Kevin Rose Leaving G4 to start Internet Only Show
Quantum Jim writes "Kevin Rose, one of the famous contributors and co-hosts of The Screen Savers, is leaving this week to concentrate on a new technology howto show called Systm. The Systm will be an internet-only show distributed free (as in beer AND speech) in a number of formats: Theora, Xvid, WMV, H.264, and PSP (what's that?). There will be bittorrent trackers available too! If only I had broadband..."
God knows that he and Morgan Webb were the only things worth watching on that sinking ship of a channel...

Its due time for the web to get a real TV show! We all know that it's the media of the future!
He knows how bad things have gotten (as if they could get any worse...) and is leaving to pursue bigger and better things that everyone knows he can. If only he could call up Leo and Patrick and have them help out...that would be excellent.
PSP = Play Station Portable - which uses it's own video format.

He forgot this [java] technology. I consider it a serious contender based on Java. Slashdotters, point your browsers to http://stream.fluendo.com/demo/office/audiovideo/j ava.php to see what I am talking about.
To give up a job to publish free (as in everything) show on the web, that means he's either got cajones the size of bowling balls or his job absolutely sucked.
I'll give this show a shot, and may even not block the ads (if there are any)

Is he taking Sarah Lane with him?
Only make 3 episodes before giving up, like his last attempt, The Broken?
Arrgh, I just finished reading the previous post... Dont know whether I have "a damage to the prefrontal area" or not!
I greatly enjoyed The Broken. Whatever happened to it?

Kevin Rose is too cool for vowels. Pretty soon he'll have his name changed to Kvn Rs. That shit's leet.

Fans of the old TechTV show "The ScreenSavers" might want to check out Leo Laporte's podcasts. He makes his radio show available. He has also gotten together with some people from the old show and they do a podcast called This Week in Tech.

with the podcast he did last week for Twit.tv I thought he was gonna announce that he and sarah were getting married or that she was knocked up or something. Lol, well this way he gets to live for another day....
..is almost as cheesy as the name and the blocky graphic. It is kinda funny listening to the clock in my office tick and change at the same time as the countdown clock though. Hopefully his show will be much better.
Kevin is also doing a pod cast along Leo and some of the other guys from the old TEchTV.
You can get it at www.thisweekintech.com
they call it TWIT, very good. Looking forward the relase of Systm tonight. systm.org

And I'm assuming that PSP in this case refers to MPEG-4 files already formatted for transfer to the memory stick on one's PSP so you don't have to run it through PSPVideo9 or the like before transferring it.

If you like the old Screensavers, you'll love the "This Week In Tech" podcast. It's all the old TSS folk talking about what they like to talk about. No more lame "which broadband router is the best blah blah" crap. Just good ol' fashioned geeks talkin about cool shit.

I liked Kevin quite a bit, but Leo used to be my favorite. You can download quite a few of Call For Help episodes via bittorent over here. I'm off to download. :)

I greatly enjoyed The Broken. Whatever happened to it?
The Broken just released a few episodes. Apparently he's going to rerelease it again with systm (according to his blog, those are going to be his two flagship shows).http://www.kevinrose.com/
By the way, he has a website: http://www.digg.com/ which is like Slashdot but community-driven, give it a try.
Mom: So kevin, how's your job at the Sceensavers?
K: I don't work there any more?
Mom: What?
K: I'm doing something new!
Mom: What's that?
K: I'm a PODCASTER!
Mom: A Broadcaster? That's nice.
K: NO.. POD caster.. POD as in iPod!
Mom: You sell ipods?
K: No..
Mom: What's it got to do with Ipods?
K: well, they can listen to my new show on ipods.
Mom: Oh.. that's nice.
Does it pay more?
K: It's a new venture, I expect to generate revenue from ads.
Mom: So, you have advertisers lined up?
k: Um..
Mom: Are you making any money yet?
k: Um...
Mom: what's with all the stuff you moved into my basement? You're not moving in there are you?
K: Um..
Mom: And what's with that microphone? Could you get it out of my face, I'm trying to talk to you?
k: *runs* OK peeps, stay tuned to my next podcast, brought to you buy Redbull, Vodka, and our biggest sponsor.. Mom!
I think the reason Kevin Rose is leaving is because of the collaboration between Happy Tree Friends and Attack of the Show. He might be forced to get dressed up as an animal and lose an eye or an arm. I guess he'd rather leave Kevin Periera to do that.
Here's also hoping that the new show is actually is actually any good...the last few months of The ScreenSavers/Attack of the Crappy Show have had about 3 minutes of actual computer related stuff covered in them. Thanks to all of the geniuses at G4...good job on getting rid of Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton, they obviously were too good so you replaced them with the obviously "better" (NOT!) younger hosts that did nothing but waste my hour!
Your insightful argument is very intresting with all the sources you cited to prove your point...
However let me try if I can rebut your claim anyway. You say that Kevin Rose is a "tool". The defention of tool as an insult is used when describing someone who is being manipulated without their knowledge - implying they are naïve and ignorant. Now I don't think that Kevin Rose matches any of those points. He knows what he is doing and is neither being exploited or manipulated. In fact he is rather taking the bull by the horns at it were and attempting to start a Online Television company producing shows reminiscent of the old TechTV days.
Now that I gave you the smart ass answer I will go alittle more into what I think you really mean by calling him a tool, which is he is a "poser" and does not possess the true elite computer hacker skills that you think are important.
Now don't get me wrong I am not Kevin Rose fanboy although I am defending him here. I do think he does a pretty good job with production value and quality of the shows he is on, either it be thebroken or the old Screen Savers. Does that mean that anyone who wants to have a tech show has to be one of the most elite computer users on the planet before they get your approval? I hope not because I have been following around online telvision shows for a while and I got to say that the ones with the most elite people as the stars suck. And the reason that is because the most elite people for the most part do not know how to be a good television host. Their camera angles are all off, the lighting always sucks and I get better sound listening to AM radio. I don't want an "elite computer hacker" running the shows I watch. I want those people in the background comming up with the content and handing it off to people like Kevin Rose who can actually present the information in a worth while format.
just because your a schizophrenic doesn't mean people arn't really out to get you
So in other words, the show is Free, as in with a capital F.
For some reason I always got the impression of him trying to hard to push some type of "1337 hacker" image that was laughable and down right stupid. If it wasn't for his little short-lived thebroken show I would have thought it was the producers of TSS that advised him to be that way, but I guess not.
I guess he really wanted to look like a some uber-hacker god for all the script kiddies that viewed the show. But alas I stopped watching TSS over a year ago and G4 as well.
I've always been a fan of the screen savers but some of the newer people on the show are complete idiots. I'm glad to see he is going out on his own.
My favorite segment had to be the dark tips where Kevin would show how to hack XBOX, sniff network data, ect. Now that this segment will no longer be FCC controlled, I would imagine the segments may be much more interesting.
He may not be far off by going on his own either - MSNBC has an article linked from the msn.com homepage on the proliferation of InternetTV and it's niche market capability.
Be sure to remember the Programmers Prayer
He said in the recent TWiT podcast that they're going to run adspace within the show for tech companies to help offset the cost as well as accepting donations and such. I'm excited about this.
Well, actually he was fired, he just didn't up and leave. But still, even though this was not too surprising, it's really wierd what Comcast has done to the once TechTV. Damn them.
"Instant gratification takes too long." - Carrie Fisher
You've set off the Sarcasm sensor! "I wish I had broadband" hah! I almost fell for that one!
Have you metaroderated recently?
He probably won't have a hard time getting a job in the tech field as I'm sure his resume is pretty impressive.
How can it be the wrong story? The author discusses the codecs the show will be released in, and sticks an inane "what's that" next to PSP.
Dunno how you can mod that off-topic, especially when it points out what the format actually is.
PocketGamer.org - For the gamer on the go!
So: when we say it's going to be a "how to" show, are we talking a show about how to understand computer technology, evaluate tech you're interested in, make your tech all work together happily, and get more out of life with your tech... ... or how to close down your brain, open your wallet, and buy the swanky new shiny thing?
No fooling. Just curious.
and bring back Ramzi for the "leet hackar biatches" and show them how to download bonzi buddy once again!
G4 bought TechTV so that they can get into all the living rooms that TechTV was already in. That's why they went from G4 to G4TechTV, and now just G4 again. They bought the network and then threw away all of the content. As for Kevin Rose, he is a tech journalist on a show about video games. I don' blame him for leaving. Any geek in main stream media is going to be criticized. But, in all honesty they were the geekiest show on TV at one point.
And furthermore, Sarah Lane is Hot.
apparently- as it is down now. the "Blank"SOD :D
In defense of Kevin you have to realize that the shows producers/ directors had major input over what Kevin could or could not say and how far he could go with it in respect to his "Dark Tips" You have to look at that show as a radio show on TV, with its crappy format changes and content not based on the hosts original thoughts but a producers. The hosts are only allowed to interpret. If the Channel/ Show was still ZDNETtv I can guarantee you that it would kick total a$$ (and Morgan Webb would still be on TSS). I could have gone without the silly dilly "I Pirate Music" tee shirts as well; but, guess what, YES! ... You are correct sir; it was the producers' idea. Kevin is actually very very intelligent, just look at his real resume.
Now for some speculation ... I believe that he is still working on a project writing a security book based on the 7 layers of the OSI. Let's see what he says in his own words, give the guy a chance.
At the risk of being modded down as a troll or flamebait, as a few others on this topic have been so far, I've never been a fan of Kevin Rose. Replacing Leo and Patrick with Kevin was a disaster almost as big as G4 and the Attack of the Show have been. Kevin is a nice guy, but he reminds me of that fellow down at the local computer society that you try to avoid at meetings: the wannabe hacker.
Since I won't go anywhere near G4, or its programming, his departure from that awful channel won't impact me in the slightest. But I do wish him well, whatever he does. Fortunately, the Internet is big enough for everyone.
"My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right." --Senator Carl Schurz (1872)
I wouldnt mind to pick Kevin's brain for a while of why he is leaving. So many rumors on the net ever since what seemed like mass firing of half the TSS hosts earlier which also removed some segments like Yoshi's corner. And then the remake of TSS into Attack of the Show, where they removed live audience, which was a mild welcome for the viewers. Wonder who is gonna replace him? Adam Sessler, together with Kevin Pereria, that would be some noisy 40 mins.
i dont do this much, but i didn't know the psp, i figured that was it. but this is a nice little blob on it.

Anyone know where I can find enough bandwidth to broadcast 640x480 or 800x600 Webcam with 96kbit audio reliably to at least 5 or more people?
Still waiting on Serviscope_minor to wake up to fucking reality and realize that Jessica Price isn't going to fuck him.
A while ago I made a comment on Slashdot about Kevin Rose that was, shall we say, not so nice. At the time he was new on The Screen Savers and I saw him as a Microsoft fanboy and I even thought that perhaps he was part of G4's inspiration to steal and destroy TechTV.
These days he's much more open to Linux and OS X and is acting like a true professional. He finally fits in along Laporte and company now that he's on TWiT. I'm not a "fan" of Kevin Rose, but I do take back the bad things I've said about him, and I wish him luck in the future.
hah.. i agree, his stuff reminds me of that stupid hackers movie. totally off base and wannabe crap.

I know that if I had my own web based show I'd release it for PSP...
that way all the ladies can be like "didn't I see you in my little brother's pocket?"
Now that the site's apparently back up for the time being, at 8:00PM PST, the first episode of Systm will be released... the IRC channel that you may want to join is located on the irc.dslextreme.com server, in the #systm channel.
Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Bugs are good for building character in the user.
whoever decided it would be a good idea to post this story the day of the first systm release deserves to be taken out in the woods and shot.
Gee, thanks for posting about this on the front page of Slashdot. Whereas before, those of us who cared enough to be on the mailing list were going to download the first episode tonight. Now that it's slashdotted, nobody is going to get the first episode tonight.
Slashdot didn't even have the courtesy to run their links through the Coral CDN. Nice.
Jealous?
Then go start your own show.
Just got this mail from Systm:

Systm release tonight!
From the creators of thebroken comes a new downloadable tech show: "Systm" (pronounced system). While Systm is a general interest HOW-TO show, thebroken will continue to have 40'z and hacking
Episode #1 will be released tonight at 8:00PM PST! To celebrate, we will be throwing a house party starting at 6:00PM. We'll fire up our live webcam of the festivities along with an IRC chat room. Chat with Kevin, Dan, Keith and Ron (systm/thebroken crew) along with other TechTV staffers (Leo, Pat, Yoshi, Martin, Alex, and others (Ramzi) have all been invited).
Visit the website now: http://systm.org/

When is thebroken episode 4 coming out?
After several weeks of lawyer negotations with G4 (my 9-5 job), they have agreed to release me from my contract. Friday May 27th 2005 marks my last day on the G4 network. That means we are focusing on thebroken / Systm FULL TIME! We are starting to plan the next episode of thebroken now, and we'll send out another update as we get closer to the release! Now that this is our full-time job, expect to see many more video releases coming your way!

While that might be cool to some, there are "cooler" things in my book. Why waste time on lame "Dark Tips" like setting a system's floppy drive on fire, or why a CD-ROM with some obscure 1337-h4X0r bootable distro is more "deviant" than another 1337-h4X0r on a floppy, just because it can go through a metal detector? Why not talk about how many great bootable Linux distros there are out there that could actually have you be productive, rather than just have some kind of 1337 factor? That's just an example, though.
But, he does represent to me the stripping away of what little of TechTV/ZDTV was left. Back then, every show was informative, even the shows that were somewhat silly. Never once would you have seen some dorks lighting a floppy drive on fire be labelled a "Tip", and never would you see a commercial with some chick's ass shaking to advertise the new "my ricer is pimped out" show.
I don't moderate anymore. Karma penalty for 90% fair mods? Can I mod that unfair?
why blame kevin for what the channel does? before G4 took over Kevin was all about linux and real tech. Leo, Pat & Kevin were great as a team And Kevin knows his stuff

I just finished watching the first episode of Systm. Although I'm not really that interested in war spying, the show wasn't bad. Especially for something being done by a group of people without corporate backing, and then put out for free.
I can only think of two possible criticisms.
Dan Huard is not really comfortable yet being in front of a camera, and it shows. That will pass with more experience.
The other one would be that while viewing the large xvid version the audio is out of sync with the video. At least on my system. Hey, I do a lot of video editing for commercial projects, and that's one of those things that I can't help but notice. I may burn a video CD later and see if the problem is just something unique about my hardware, or if its really out of sync.
I want a new quote. One that won't spill. One that don't cost too much. Or come in a pill.
It's 9:35 PM PST, I go to their web site. Nothing about downloading a video. In fact it's still advertising the fact that it will be available at 8PM PST Monday. In fact nothing about what the show is about or what happened or anything.
I guess those guys don't "get" the internet. Tell me again why I should bother with this?
"For a successful technology, honesty must take precedence over public relations for nature cannot be fooled." -Feynman
Kevin is a nice kid but he never should have walked away from a real job. He really is not a gifted on air host.
War spying is not a new topic for them. Do not regurgitate the same old stories in a new format. Myself having a 2 year associate's degree in electronics and working as a network engineer for the last 8 years I am not impressed. (not that I have bragging rights for that!)
Shoot higher. Intelligent leaders surround themselves with those that are smarter than themselves. As journalists, use your talents to search out people with skills higher than your own in the topics you are covering and use your journalist skills as a rosetta stone for the rest of us. Pardon the reference, but hosts of cooking shows pretend they do not know what they are doing when they have guests on to facilitate the knowledge transfer from the presenter to the viewer.
Why lock yourself into one topic (war spying) that so many people may not find an interest in? That is the content of the whole episode? Nobody cares f you do not have a set. This was your coming out party, seek a large audience. Make it look like more than a college project. At this point you are actually an experienced journalist. Use your skills and do not just report, Produce! I think this could take off, but only with hard work and dedication.
Not 4 hours after your post was made, I grabbed the torrent and started it up. Getting 3 megabits per second, the thing only took 18 minutes to download, with 2300+ seeds.
His site might have been trashed from the traffic, but the downloads themselves seemed to be fine.
- Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set him on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
All I'm saying is that I didn't appreciate the kind of work he does, and what he represents. Maybe I'm more mature, I dunno-- I just can't stand his way of doing and presenting things.
I don't moderate anymore. Karma penalty for 90% fair mods? Can I mod that unfair?
...is that people who can download and watch a show in any of those formats (let alone BitTorrent) are not the ones who really need a tech how-to show.
