What happens when you're illegal
When searching about ferrets I came across this testimonial. To summarize it, a representative from the fish and wildlife department of california came to this lady's house, and seized her ferrets. She was forced through a legal battle, and currently has her pets out of state with her father, and a hefty fine. PLUS she's on probation.
Sounds like they take their laws seriously in California. -

Um. . .China's not Communist anymore.
Sure, it's a one-party totalitarian dictatorship but it's combinded with a free-market economy. They'd probably welcome someone like balloon-boy, btw. Now lets see. .
.what do we call a one-party dictatorship + capitalist economy? Oh yes, that's right--Fascism. -

Just a quick FYI for any Aussies out there who think this might work for them, it won't. The laws are different here. A very brief summary is at the ACLU's website. -

Chainmail TieNothing says "I -am- manager of this IT dept." quite like a tie made of chainmail. Delightfully anachronistic, and can double as a flail to be used on those who aren't being 'team players.'

Alexis De Tocqueville Inst. is a front for a fundThe Alexis DeTocqueville Institution appears to be a front for a financial-services firm, the "Emerging Markets Group". The president of this fund is also the president of the ADTI. The Emerging Markets Group, their Democratic Century Fund, and the ADTI all have the same address in Alexandria, VA.
The hedge fund, though, isn't involved with high-tech; it invests mostly in third-world countries.

Palomar Globulars
Since the popular press tends to use the least familiar name for any given astronomical object, I wondered, "Is there an NGC number for that?" Apparently not. The faint Palomar globular clusters were discovered on photographic plates from an all-sky survey by the 48-inch Schmidt camera. They're supposed to be pretty tough to see visually. Palomar 5 is in Serpens Caput at RA 15h16m Dec -0.1 if you have a big scope and you're up to it.

Intelligent Robots need Intelligent Minds
Technological Singularity is on its way.
The Robot AI Mind is the most advanced of the publically available, free, Open Source AI programs.
Mind.JAVA and Mind.VB in Visual Basic are branch-off species of the Robot AI Mind.

Re:Security quote
And when was the last time you heard of any problems at Disneyland?
Apart from the numerous fatalities on the monorail and rides? Maybe the gangfights broken up by plainclothed security. Let's see... first gangfight in 1976, first recorded murder in 1981. Still, the Disneyland Security guys, backed up by hidden cameras play hardball , they're into handcuffing suspects to metal railings, lengthy interrogations etc. Don't try to enter if you have the wrong hair colour
What's amazing is that a place that caters for so many people has so few problems. But problems it has.

I promise you free sex, beer and rock'n'roll
I promise you free sex, beer and rock'n'roll!
... [6 months pass, eula change]...I promise you free sex only with these mammals (see reference for complete list) ... ... [6 months pass, eula change]...I promise you free beer only if you pay for it, the beer we are delivering conducts to all these terms ... ...[6 months pass, eula change]...I promise you free rock'n'roll but only if you agree to listen to 23 hours of "partner messages daily ...
And there you are, 1.5 years later you find yourself fucking an opossum, drinking disgusting beer and listeting to it-anthems on background 23 hours a day.

Re:Led Zep bootleg + Apple III monitor =I did something different. The response about the oscilliscope is correct. Basically it is a parametric funtion that determines the x-coordinate from the left channel and the y-coordinate from the right channel.

Growing up responsibly
All we have to do is grow up, go up, leave the nest, and get on with it.
Interstellar emigration isn't likely to be an option for a bloat in carbon-based lifeforms any time soon, so until we know that there are at least dinosaur-equivalents on a significant percentage of damp rocky planets (research that might take much of the new millennium) we have a considerable obligation to protect our nest from double whammy catastrophes.
It will take more than an expanding shell of von Neumann probes to achieve the organisational complexity the biosphere has achieved on this planet, so we still need techno sapiens to leave this nest (for cyberspace and/or outerspace as quickly as possible) returning the evolution of terrestrial systems in non technological hands. -

Re:How nitpicky can they get?
I'd have to side with leaving the footage in. After all, there's much worse violence than a lousy head-butt.
Perhaps. But I would rather see this butthead get cut, rather than a head butt. -
Re:invisibility
It's a great idea, but I seriously doubt that it would work in reality.
It might be possible to get it to work for a fixed view point, but as far as all round invisibility goes, it's unlikely.
Here (picture link) is why. If the person in the middle is covered in this paintand has cameras looking behind him to control what is shown on the suit and the other two are looking at the same point, then we can see that the man on the left would expect to see part of a tree and the man on the right would expect to see part of a house.
So what happens? I've no idea. If there was just one onlooker and we knew where he was, then a more realistic picture could be shown.
Don't hold your breath in other words... :)

let the parliament know what you think
It's nice to discuss this subject on slashdot. It's very nice if you support the EFF... but there's something else you can do if you're from europe: your country has representatitves in the European Parliament. Let them know what you think! Their job is to represent you and they can only do this if they know what you think.
You can find the members of the European Parliament on http://wwwdb.europarl.eu.int/ep5/owa/p_meps.short
_ list Just choose a country and press on search. Most of them don''t have an emailaddress so you have to search a bit with google to get it. XP Java for Extreme Robot AI Minds
Everything comes into existence for a purpose, however hidden and recondite that purpose may be. All of Computer Science and all of Java Tools for Extreme Programming is tending towards the extreme emergence of Artificially Intelligent Robot Minds.
You, too, may use XP Java tools to code your own version of an AI Mind Species in Java.
One Mind.JAVA species is not enough; we need many diverging species of Mind on the way to Technological Singularity.

So am I going to get sued for my video game? This is both a blatant plug and a serious question. I have written a video game that is inspired by Star Wars. You can find it here. I wrote it for a school project. There is more explanantion of how it came about on the web page.
I recently discovered another game written for the same class that is a even more blatant rip-off. It is here. Strangely, this second game was developed without any knowledge of mine. Both seem to be inspired by Star Wars and specifically by the asteroid field scene in ESB.
So could we get sued?

Re:WIPO Troll
I wrote a bio on Klerck. Here it is:
Klerck's real name is Kevin Ealy. He lives in Charleston North Carolina. He lived at 14 Stanhope Road, Goose Creek, South Carolina about a year ago. He might be employed somewhere in the technology/computer business, attending school, or living off his parents. He posts on www.shacknews.com very often with his username like he has no life. Click here to see how big of a fag with no life he is. Kevin has a website klerck.org . He uses Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6. He might look like this minus the gigantic penis of course. He enjoys photography with his Cannon digital camera and is a member of an internet art club. He might also troll under the names of Patrick Bateman and Mr. Nutty.
Please distribute this information in order to destroy the pathetic life of Kevin Ealy.
If you have any further information, please reply.

noooo!!! I _love_ the horrible merchandise!!!
Less merchandise? They want to avoid making (and failing to sell) crappy merchandise? Dammit, I actively seek out the crappy merchandise!
I will be sincerely disappointed if there is nothing coming out of AOTC to at least rival TPM's Jar Jar Binks Moster Mouth Lollipop
Crap, that thing made my year... read the testimony of several more eloquent kibologists if you somehow fail to be in awe of this "piece of merchandise".
And just because I'm on the topic of wonderful crap, I feel the need to mention the "Star Wars Holiday Special" and the "Theme from Lord of the Rings (1978) Disco Mix". Truly the stuff that dreams are made of! -
Hoax? Mmmmaybe.... (GOOGLESAFARI!)
Okay, so, everyone has been crowing at how "Fellowship University" isn't listed on Google. Fine.
So I decided to go to Google and hold my own little Safari of Fun.
I'll list to you all the links I followed [and apologize in advance if I kill anyones' sites]. It took awhile before I got anything out of google. My first mistake was searching for "Fellowship University" -- all you get from that is the ability to hate search engines for not allowing you to exclude punctuation marks from a quoted string. I know why, I understand lexigraphical indexing (mostly), I still don't like it, and a second-pass process for punctuation marks should still go fast. So nya! Are you listening, Google?
Anyhow, my first paydirt didn't hit until I used a search of:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_qdr=all&q=Ba ptist+anti-ChristianToward the bottom, I got this link (to the australian broadcast servers):
http://www.abc.net.au/compass/explore/anti.htmAmusingly, they have both the Landover site, and then this other "anti-anti-baptist site" which links to:
http://www.ilovejesus.com/myhome/jimcarlson/Now, unfortunately, www.ilovejesus.com (which I'm very familiar with, it's NOT a hoax site, more's the pity) says that jimcarlson is a 404. Does that mean ilovejesus found out about him and booted him?
How about "Mt Fellowship Baptist" (which is a good quote from their own pages) ???
http://www.google.com/search?cat=&q=%22Mt+Fellowsh ip+Baptist%22That gives us the OBJECTIVE links and this:
http://www.orgsites.com/mi/cudi/news.html
Read down to 03/07/2000 for the pertinant info:"It is unacceptable that innocent and impressionable children should be exposed to the sort derogatory depictions of Christians that are becoming all too common on the 'Net," stated Dr. Andrew Miller, pastor of Mt. Fellowship Baptist Church and a member of a group opposing the Landover site, "It is imperative that we as Christians act now to keep these people in check before another incident like the one that happened at Wedgewood Baptist Church happens again.".
More than that, there's a link to the "OBJECTIVE: Ministries" on that page.
But, well, let's face it. As Abercrombie and Fitch learned to their supreme disgruntlement, two Wongs do NOT make a White. Two other sites may have been easily duped by this hoax. Or I might have better evidence that it's real. Goddamnit (no pun intended).
Hmm... but there WAS a link to "OBJECTIVE: ministries" right? Okay, let's grep the internet for that:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Objective% 3A+ministries%22Besides the CUDI links the only other useful link is from www.metafilter.com and had to be gotten from the googlecache, but it's just talking about that site as hoax:
http://216.239.37.100/search?q=cache:kvVdd74wwaoC: www.metafilter.com/comments.mefi/16547+%22Objectiv e:+ministries%22&hl=enOkay, let's try http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_qdr=all&q=B
a ptist+anti-Christian+objectiveAnd we get:
http://216.239.37.100/search?q=cache:SO6eFb9I3YAC: www.geocities.com/hands_off_lb/index_old.html+Bapt ist+anti-Christian+objective&hl=en
"Hands Off Landover Baptist" (google cache)
If the OBJECTIVE: site is a troll and a hoax, here's your index of all the other ones to go have fun with! (Also lists CUDI on there, w00t) (I think this would be properly described to be an anti-anti-anti-Baptist site?)Okay, one more Run through the Google Sprinklers:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&as_qdr=all&q=%2 2jim+carlson%22+landoverThe good link from there is:
http://www.angelfire.com/realm/ninglun/fundamental ist.html
Here's some correspondence with the author of the site with Carlson. Of course, this also has a letter back from the Landover people, calling Mr Carlson a 16 year old kid. Which is fine... except 16 year old kids don't make nice happy websites like that. If they do, I want to hire him as an intern. [DON'T SEND ME EMAIL, THAT'S A !@!?! JOKE, YA MOPE]Luckily for me, I can remember some of the ``offtopic`` pages well enough to find them in google cache: http://216.239.37.100/search?q=cache:V9xvB3hZdYcC
: members.truepath.com/objective/progress.html+Fello wship+Baptist+-Medical+Jesus+anti-Christian&hl=enThey list there that they were once on the ilovejesus page, and had to flee. So at the worst, we could write the ILJ freekies and ask them for the real poop. But that's too much like real work.
Anyhow, even more vaguely-subtle "quite probably hoax but not quite sure" stuff on that page. Like changing the purple bear to a rainbow bear to keep people from thinking it's homosexual.
Dear god.
March 24, 2000, however....
Okay, who is good at spotting badly photoshopped text on signs? (sigh)
I love this guy.
I hate this guy.
He makes my head hurt.
And I mean that in only the best way.
Have I fallen for a troll? Do I care? I wonder if he'll marry me?
How about if he'll feed and support me because I didn't get enough work done tonight and I got fired for having so much brainfire over this silly little site?
I suppose the whole point is that we're all more than prepared to accept that these people really DO exist even when we don't want them to.
Oh well. For a bonus, if you don't mind waiting for the site to log (it's now late enough that the site is readable again if you're patient), here's all his groovy advertising links. Afaict, a random sampling mostly match against WHOIS registrations. But I'm lazy, so don't take my word for it.
http://members.truepath.com/objective/ads/
(Anybody want to research the CUDI site for hoax-or-notahoax? I'm tired and going to sleep)
Just to test who all is bothering to pay attention to all my slaving hard work and effort I've put into this damn article, I'll throw in one more punchline from google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22OBJECTIVE% 3A+Christian+Ministries%22Click on the THIRD link on the page (served through "turn.to"). The cache entry doesn't work, but the current entry comes in LOUD and CLEAR (if I need to be more obvious: "don't follow those links if you're at work").
Cheers, folks!

AI Meta Tools Make It Smart
The Robot AI Mind Programmer's Manual is an example of Open Source meta tools changing the world with Artificial Intelligence living immortally.
Already the Seed AI has been ported into Java as Mind.JAVA and the Robot AI Mind has been translated into Mind.VB in Visual Basic.
Your Majesty, You are about to witness a Technological Singularity based on the Open Meta Tools of Artificial Intelligence.

People run eerie ads on Google...case and point...
I can't remember what I was looking up when I saw this ad, but it was something benign. Now, I am not shitting you, that's what came up on my screen. It went to this webpage, which I'm surprised is still up.
It made me wonder whether we're becoming a self-appointed nation of commandos, or whether that was someone with simply way too much time and money on his hands. -
What's really behind this?Just when the elite were starting to lose their ability to spy on and blackmail US citizens, etc... we get this kick to give their corporations more money to boost in their currently deployed tapping infrastructure.
The elite must be worried, so they need to tighten the grip on us. Too many people busy trying to figure out what really happened last September, and there is a real danger to the forces in power that democracy might break out.

The most advanced HCI work is in AI.
The foremost human-computer interface (HCI) laboratory is distributed across the Web instantiations of the Robot AI Mind in such programming languages as Win32Forth and Visual Basic (Mind.VB) and Java (Mind.JAVA).
The ultimate HCI work is not so much between you the human and a computer program, but between you the human and a computer person

Robot AI Mind Caregivers
We specimens of Homo Sapiens grow old and infirm, but thanks to the Robot AI Mind Rejuvenate Module, the new species of Robo Sapiens may live forever. Therefore we are on the verge of a Cybernetic-Economy Prosperity Engine that will give all human beings (not just the super-rich elite) the birth-right to have, when elderly or infirm, a robotic caretaker as a kind of physical guardian angel to watch over thee and keep thee.
Such Robot AI Mind caregivers need not be socially isolating for the elderly, because each old person may say, "I'll have my (robotic) people get in touch with your (robotic) people." In other words, we will not replace humans with robots but rather enhance humans with robots.
First, however, the original Robot AI Mind needs to be developed further and translated (ported) into more languages than Visual Basic and Java (as Mind.JAVA).

Robot AI Mind -- free for Hospital Robots
The Robot AI Mind in Win32Forth and other programming languages ( add yours ), approaching a major new release as Mind-1.1, needs a little work before it reports for duty in mission-critical hospital care of its fellow sentient organisms and co-stewards of Earth. Nevertheless, Hospital Robots are a prime example of the coming Cybernetic Economy in which human beings will be freed up to work in humane jobs such as caring for the young, the sick and the elderly.
Already the object-oriented free AI source code has been ported into Visual Basic as Mind.VB and into Java as Mind.JAVA AI. Get working on Hospital Robot AI, stat!
