Damn straight!
...would lose the best part of their raison d'etre if put in monochrome palettes inclined to black. And we all know what inclined-to-black gameplay looks like, don't we?

Re:Linux?
Clearly your comment suggests you know very little about the capabilities of Linux and the state of Linux gaming - or you're just being a troll.
For your information, Flash is often ported to Linux a fair time after it's written for Windows so the likelihood of this game being Flash 9 is slim to none since there will probably not be a Linux port of Flash 9 by that time. Also, there are several games that look and play better in Linux using OpenGL than they do in Windows on the same hardware. I would expect that this game simply will use OpenGL as the graphics engine allowing the majority of code written to be cross-platform with very little to port between Windows, Linux and Mac.
Thank you.

Re:Only on Vista?
Sure you'll have to wait, but that time barrier can protect you from the shit games, eh?

Re:selling precious medals impacts their price
Unless they face something, what is Doom 3 games is based on!

Re:Oblig. slashdot whine
You're missing the point! A better heatsink means that the heat gets more efficiently transferred to the computer's surroundings, therefore heating your room more efficiently.
I will grant you that computers make great space heaters--they not only heat the room, but they can do all sorts of interesting things in the mean time. -
Re:Don't read this article, please.
I have a 6600 GT (and Athlon 2400+) and it runs smoothly at 1024x768 with most of the settings dialed up.
Install the latest Doom 3 patch, the latest Nvidia Forceware patch, and the latest motherboard and sound card patches.
For me, turning off EAX, setting the card's Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering control panel to 'Application Preference', and setting image_cacheMinK higher in autoexec.cfg (see page 7&8 of the guide) all seemed to make the biggest difference.
For more info, try the tweak guide. -
Re:Obligatory Spinal Tap
Oooh, you can always do more black if you put your heart into it..
PS: I loved the game :) -
Re:The nerds have already seen
I happen to know of a very good one.

Mars...been there, done that
I've been to mars before...it sucked.

Re:Me too...

Don't touch with it!
If you tamper with it, you'll unleash demons from hell!!!!!!!

Why not just...
take this virtual trip to Mars?

Re:I would like to see justification for this
Well the PC system requirements are almost exactly the same. A 1.5 GHz P4, 384MB RAM, and a 64MB video card (Radeon 8500/Geforce3+) are required. The game might run on a 1.25GHz G4 but I doubt id/Activision/Aspyr really wants to support questions on why the game runs bad. Hardly anything that needs justification.

Re:Mocking Mars
Why else do you think we're training legions of people to be skilled in battling the forces of the burning hells?
-
We US'ians must ask ourselves...
Do we really want to leave this rock? I mean, we can start exploring Mars, but I'm not sure we're gonna like what we'll find there...
-
A dangerous Tech...
Because we all know what happens when you open the teleporter.
Long times in the dark with guns without flashlights, thats what. -
Re:Already done?
I recall somthing to that effect as well. However, I did find a training simulation that should help prepare us for what to do in case all hell does break loose.

Just in time for Doom 3! (and Cache/Mirror)
The page is rather slashdotted right now, but I managed to get a glimpse. Looks like this thing is just in time for the Doom 3 mania, with more buttons than you can shake a boomstick at! Looks like quite the excellent Doom 3 controller to me, although an additional toggle joystick would help things more. And there's a Google cache right here. Finally, I also found this prototype design of what looks to be another model -- interesting stuff.

Re:Buy Directly From Developer
The id Store doesn't seem to be selling Doom 3. Clicking "Buy Now" from the Doom 3 site provides links to EB Games, Gamestop, and Best Buy. I guess the other comments were right about id wanting to develop good relations with their retailers!

Re:Interesting concept
We refer to this as a fix for a nonexistant problem.
I don't know if anyone remembers the Honda Prelude with 4 wheel steering back in the 80's, but it was a really neat technology. The car would handle like mad at low and high speeds and was incredibly stable. However, the option cost about $4k and was not widely used. The reason? No one needed it that bad, the Prelude had great handling as it was.
Now we see a system the is almost exactly the same used on large American trucks. This makes alot of sense and will sell. It helps people park these land barges in parking lots without squishing the VWs and can help you get your trailer out of or into a tight spot. Definitely a better application of the technology from a sales and marketing point of view.
IMHO the only reason other than 3d development for a 3d mouse is for games that have a 3d environment (credit the other posters for bringing up Descent). But when has a game ever caused people to upgrade their computers or perephrials? Huh? -
Re:Flash?
The official website should be a showcase for the game, getting us revved up and excited for its release, giving us the lowdown on everything that anyone would wan't to know.
A potential example of that - Bungie Studios' site.
Love them or loathe them, Bungie seem pretty good at that PR thing. Id communicate through occasional updates on their finger service, Valve through emails and posts on other people's forums, and leave their own sites as unsullied, unused shop windows with a few smatterings of out-of-date news and screenshots.

direct link to trailer on official sitehttp://akamai.doom3.com/video/trailer_large.mov
I don't think we can slashdot akamai, but that quake.de link is pretty toasted at the moment, heh...
I actually have not seen this yet (posting from 56K here) so I'm not sure what this trailer is and how it compares to the other file...

If you wish to view the trailer:
And your machine doesn't have a Microsoft Windows registry, click here to download it.
If that's the way it will really look when I play it, I will buy it and play at 5 frames per second just to see it. -

Re:How fast?
-
Yeaaaahhhhoooo!
I've been patiently waiting for the release of Thief 3 and/orDoom 3 before updating my game PC. It looks like the game will be out before the hardware though, but it illustrates that sitting tight will get you more bang for the buck.
Of course when Duke Nukem Forever comes out you could likely buy a Cray machine for $24.95. -
So... Shareware?
So the appropriate answer to Mac Halo's problems is a free and open beta test and/or "shareware" release, ala Doom, Quake, etc. Give people the engine and a couple of levels, and maybe multiplayer play and see what happens?
Now that I think about it, I wonder if id will do that for Doom III.
<MINIRANT>
Also, I wouldn't have expected any laptop made a year ago to support games released recently. That's the nature of the machine, unfortunately, as far as laptops go, unless they're one of those hacked-together beasts that use desktop components.

myDoom
And here I was thinking that "myDoom" was just the personalization page for the Doom3 web portal...
-
Re:Screenshots too dark
Yeah; I think "moody lighting" is all a matter of contrast rather than overall darkness-of-scene.
-
Want to see a bigger Doom3 trailer?
A short look at the html of the site along with a small guess yields: http://www.doom3.com/play_large.html The default trailer is entirely to small to make out details.
-
Whatever created these screenshots...
yes
I'd like to have it. Of course, it probably requires a PC 3.0ghz with 4200 RDRAM, an 8x AGP video card and massive HD. Even if you go open source, you can't escape the corporate Hand Of Doom. -
pre-order info from id site?
-
wow
-
bad site
The site does not play well with your favorite browsertry ie to get correctly-sized popup windows for the screenshots, there is a hidden "next" button
-
Large format trailer
I haven't slept for more then 24 hours but I didn't see a link to the large format trailer on the site so here it is:
Of course, I already grabbed it myself.
-
there can be only one
There's only one I'm exited about: Thief III.
Of course, I'll have to check out DOOM III... it looks like it might be the first playable survival horror game, ever. It'll be nice to see if the id folks can make a good game (you know, with a plot and stuff) with their excellent engine...
;-)Oh, and my Neverwinter Nights modules.

Re:Nasty
>>The gaming industry is more and more starting to feel like just another Hollywood branch. I wonder how long it takes before they'll start redoing old games, like they're doing with all old classic movies now?
You mean like this ?
