Re:No Phantasy Star?
I guess I'll just have to settle for the emulated Saturn version in the Phantasy Star collection on my modded Saturn
The Gameboy Advance keeps bringing back the classic hits... including all 3 Phantasy Star games on one cart. -
Re:Are you kidding?
Gamecube is $150. (link to where I bought mine).
Are you saying PS One is free? -
Re:Sell out with me oh yeah
It won't defray the cost of the game though. You'll pay $49.95 for the game at Electronics Boutique, and then the standard recurring monthly fee to play the game. Just like ticket prices for movies don't change according to product placement in the film, there's no defrayal of cost here either.

Re:Why PC's are better for this...
So.. the point you overlook is that Counterstrike has had a huge amount of support from Valve software, the developers of Half-Life. After all, it's not like they didn't turn Counterstrike into a commercial product.
There's no reason they couldn't port it to the Xbox if they really wanted to given that the Counterstrike crew is now an internal Valve team.
So I think you're largely whining. Indrema drove themselves into the ground, hard, because they had no industry support. Precisely *because* it was an open platform - it meant that any moron with a compiler could build a "game" for it.
This dilutes the brand name as there's no quality control over released products. It is extremely difficult to get *anything* released for an existing console because of the high testing standards that PS2 and Xbox games must pass - even if you're a well known developer.
And then there's the fairness aspect. Aimbots. Wallhack cheats. One nice aspect of the Xbox is that it's a closed system, unmodifiable by end-users. You're not guaranteed, but are much more likely to have no cheating compared to, say, l33t Counterstrike script-kiddies. -
Re:How to make the Xbox a successMS recently started a new bundle of an XBox, JSRF , Controller S and the DVD remote for US $250.00 (or very close to that) and sales have already jumped.
Not to nitpick, but it's actually [a penny or nickel under] $200. Like here for example.

I found it here as well...

Re:Truckdrivers love them.
it's more than atari/nintendo are making from those games today anyway.
Nintendo is reselling its library of old games at $5 apiece to run on the e-reader system. -
imports
The other usage for mod chips, which very few people in this thread appear to a) have mentioned or b) care about, is for playing imported games. In general this is not a big thing in the US (which is why it gets ignored) but in other places such as Europe it is a much larger issue - the US tends to get games months or even years sooner than EU countries. For example, Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball ships on 3rd December in the US, but does not come out until February 2003 in the UK. And two months is pretty quick - Final Fantasy 10 took around 9 months.

Re:Nothing new
(1) Try buying from EBGames.
(2) Get your deliveries sent to your place of work.
I have had zero problems with them, and with 1-day overnight shipping (frequently free because of coupons / special offers), I usually get new games the same day that they appear in stores. It's nice to arrive at work in the morning, only to find a FedEx package sitting on my desk with a shiny new game inside. -

Eb Worlds
Check out EB Worlds by StageCast. By simply assigning rules to objects, you can create fairly complex games very quickly. It comes with a collection of graphics or you can use your own. The games are limited to the 2-D type however.
It creates Java-based games which you can share on the web. -
RPG Maker for PS & PS2
RPG Maker for PS and PS2
The original has been out for a while. It's similar to Adventure Construction Set. -

Why Should Nintendo Price Drop?
Here are the current prices from EB Games
- GameCube - $199
- Xbox - $299
- PS2 - $199
So, why should Nintendo drop their price? The PS2 is currently the same price, but it's also been out a full year longer. That's not reason enough for it to be cheaper, but most people think that way. So, the system to compare price with is the XBox. It's already cheaper, and after the price drop, it'll be the same price.
Nintendo has no real reason to drop their prices, now. The rumored price drop later this year? It'll probably be just in time for Christmas.
- GameCube - $199

Re:Best Buy = Best Fraud
EB Games has a 30 day, no questions asked return policy.
-
Re:Performance boost?
Not likely; but we may see something akin to the PSOne with PlayStation 2 hardware.
-
Re:Eye candy, but's what new?
Actually, if you can find it at Best Buy, it's only $10. And the "sequel" comes out in two weeks.

Dreamcast VGA BoxI'm curious about this myself, as I don't have a TV...just two monitors...a pair of Trinitrons (17" and a used 15"). I can't tell you about other consoles, but I do know about the Dreamcast.
I got a Dreamcast a couple of months ago and Soul Calibur and Shenmue look and play just fine on both of them, thanks to my VGA box.
You might want to check GameStop and Electronics Boutique if they have stores near you. I got my DC used from GameStop when I used to work there (nice discount). A quick search of the Gamestop web site didn't turn up anything, but a search using "vga" as the search term at EB turned up 3 adapters for the Dreamcast, including the one I have (the one at the bottom).
Both stores carry used stuff, which might save you a few bucks. The GameStop return policy on Used items is better than on new ones! Someone at one of the stores might also have info about adaptors for other systems. At GameStop, if they don't have one in stock, ask them to do an "Availability Request". That will search all the stores to see who has one and get it sent to the store near you. That's how I got my DC VGA box.
As an aside, I also got a connector for my DC that lets you connect a Playstation/Saturn controller, as well as a standard PS/1 PC keyboard to the DC. Haven't used it yet, but it seems pretty cool. Only $4.99 used!

Yes, you are mistaken.
Can't blame you for being confused, there's no mention of the release date anywhere of blizz's war3 site. -
Re:SSX Tricky
This isn't my usual style of game, but man, is it addictive. A definite must-buy... especially if you have a GameCube.
Agreed. I was a huge fan of the orriginal, and just picked up Tricky a few days ago. Man, this game is awesome. Even though only two of the tracks are completely new, the old tracks are so drastically different, you'll barely recognize them. Snowdream in paticular doesn't look a thing like it did in the first game. The new characters rock, the soundtrack is better than ever, the graphics have been slicked up a notch, and the game is even more addictive than its predecessor. Another cool thing EA did was include a "DVD Extras" portion on the disc, which is basically a collection of making-of documentaries like you would expect to see on a movie DVD. Overall, the game is incredible. Go buy it, now.
I'm playing the PS2 version though, according to IGNCube's review the Cube version has some graphical and control issues. You might want to pick it up for the PS2 if you have the choice between platforms. -
No one mentioned BGDA?
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
The baldur's gate games have never missed their mark, and I'm eagerly awaiting this one. This one looks like it'll be diabloesque, but with actual role-playing involved, rather than just a click-fest(or in this case button-mash) arcade game. -
Wizardry 8. A great rpg for the PC.I got this game a couple of weeks ago and it is wonderful. It is hard to find good plot driven rpgs lately, but Wizardry 8 has been keeping me up nights.
:)Oh, and I think its only avalible from Electronics Boutique. I tried to get it at Best Buy and they told me that they had never heard of it.

Three Ideas
Wizardry 8 is getting consistently rave reviews - if you like RPGs this one to get.
The Star Trek DVD collection, besides being the only way to get ppl to buy Ep V - was selling for $100 below retail according to my last Best Buy circular.
And of course the perennial favorite, the Dilbert calendar. -
Wrong on some points...
- You can now hook up a USB ethernet/modem device to a PS2 and play Tony Hawk 3 online.
- Sony's official modem/ethernet accessory and 40 GB hard drive are both out in Japan.
- You can get a Zip Drive for PS2

Xenogears, nanotechnology
Anyone played the Playstation RPG Xenogears before? The game has some very interesting issues brought up on Nanomachines... and their potential for abuse.

Re:System Requirements? You can find them at EBgames
Specifications:
Windows 95/98/ME/2000
Pentium 300Mhz/32 RAM
100MB hard drive
DirectX 7 video & sound
In practice, I'd estimate 500Mhz Pentium/128MB mem, 250MB hard drive space.

Re:Here goes my karma...
> but isn't it high time we started seeing
> something new out of Sid Meier?
The thing you gotta realize however is that the recent flood of Sid Meier-branded games weren't exactly owned by him or his creative team. The license has been tossed around quite a bit over the past several years, and only with Civ III did the license fall back into the hands of Firaxis, which is the company Sid Meier owns.
EBworld has a pretty decent history of it right here.
The obvious implication is that the game isn't bogged down by market drones who don't really want a new game.. they just want the same old game glossed up so people will buy it. I have faith that now that full control is back in Sid's hands, the game will be just as fresh as it was back when I was playing Civ on my 286. :) -
Re:Legalized...probably regulated Hacking...
OT, sorry.
I submitted this earlier but nothing...
EBGames has gamecubes available for preorder today. Yay!

Get 'em while they're hot. -
What's really ridiculous....
3 of the games in the top 25 of their voting section are already available on Linux (Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Tribes 2). So let me get this straight, people will pay for a $5 a month subscription to this thing, but they won't shell out $10 for a linux version of Quake 3?

Re:I'm not booting to $#@! windows for any more gaSurf over to EB Games [ebgames.com] and do a search for linux they have a whole page of brand new full Loki titles for $9.95.
Or just click here.

I'm not booting to $#@! windows for any more gamesFor Linux, I have: Quake 1,2,3, Soldier of Fortune, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Terminus, Myth 2, Heavy Gear 2, and numerous Quake expansion packs and add-on's such as Team Fortress for Quake.
My linux system works so good now I am considering wiping that worthless waste of disk space and crappy games into the bit bucket forever. Last time I booted Windoze, it couldn't handle my usb mouse and so I plugged in the ps2 mouse. This changed my IRQ's and caused my ethernet card to go down. It took me over four hours of rebooting to get everything straightened out and after that hassle I haven't screwed with it since.
Surf over to EB Games and do a search for linux they have a whole page of brand new full Loki titles for $9.95.
Windows is frelling worthless. Never again!

The Emulated Oregon Trail, new version too!I saw an apple IIe emulator a year ago, and I saw the rom for this game too. It was tiny. It would run on old hardware too (386 or greater probably). I'm sure it's out there. Number Munchers, Word Munchers, Math games, all MECC titles (They were the educational software co back in the day.) and should still be good today.
However, if these kids require eye candy, there was a new release: here is some info.
Those of us with nostalgia would probably prefer the IIe version, but your students might like the new one.
Critical thinking, math, planning, and luck all play a big role in your success. I loved this game and it was always a treat to play it.
Print out these testimonials to quell any "policy."

Loki isn't dead.If I uderstand it Loki may be dying but it isn't dead. It can still sell and develop; but it can't come up with money to pay debts, so it took legal action [Chapter 11] to buy time.
My logic is: Did you ever play Quake III Arena? Maybe you wanted to? If the answer is yes to either, now is a great time to legally own a legit version of Q3Arena at the cheapest price you'll ever find... and as a bonus, you'll be helping out a linux game developer with a good record for quality games. You know that once you have a legal pak0 and CD Key you can run Q3 on any of: linux, win32, macOS 8-9, MacOS X, and um... yeah. See ebgames.com at the low price of $10, why not also get Decent 3? $4 shipping, in stock now, you'll have it in 2 days.
If you're
/really/ modivated to help loki, go to their loki store and give them a better profit margin.Okay that was a bit off topic; maybe if I tossed in a "the devil is in the [code] defects" I'd get a sympathetic funny rating from those who like bad puns. You know who you are...

Nothing NewJesus, Michael. Scraping the bottom of the barrel for Microsoft bashing articles aren't you?
Console manufacturers have been doing this for years. Nintendo did this most recently with the Gameboy Advanced. It's Standard Operating Procedure. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's not like you don't have options.
