It's the games
I bought a GC purely because of the games that were available.
One good reason to buy a GameCube is because Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike is only available for the GC. It's got all the Rogue Squadron II missions as two player co-op missions, and a whole load of new stuff. Just look!
Other must-haves (in my case 'have-gots') are:
Ikaruga an old skool 2D shooter
The Sims works well on the console platform, and has a 'mission' mode.
Nightfire be James Bond! (at least until Everything or Nothing comes out)
It's taken a while, but I think this winter the GC has more outstanding games (either out or coming out) than the XBOX or PS2

PA comics say it best
See subject.
They've covered the N-Gage in detail, making fun of it since it was announced, and this pretty much sums their position:
"I really wish that these media outlets would stop pretending the N-Gage is a real game system."
(that quote was in response to this article about the worldwide N-Gage launch and the 'parties' at different stores)
They also have this insightful comic.

Wow, you redefine "ignorant."
Half Life 2? Way to try to bolster your agrument by including a game that's not even out for Windows machines yet.
RTCW? Yup.
C&C Generals? Yup, coming soon.
Halo? Yup, soon.
Sim City 4? Yup.
Civ III? Yup.
In conclusion, you need to take a break from the gaming and check your facts before you post. Otherwise you come off looking like a dumb shit when someone like me comes along to easily prove you wrong.

Re:classic games?
The underdogs site, from what I can tell, only (knowingly) distributes games that are not still being sold by the publisher. It deals purely in abandonware which admittedly isn't strictly legal(well, read not legal). There are a fair few arguments for and against the free distribution of such software, some of which may be read here, and here,.

It also made the news on GameSpot. Not anywhere near as much detail here though.
They suggest somewhat more PC involvement than indicated above:
"Brian Fargo's inXile entertainment has today announced that it's currently working on a new Bard's Tale role-playing game for PC and current generation consoles."

Only with certain games...
According to GameSpot
The Fire Red and Leaf Green Pokemon games are the only two that are currently known to support Nintendo's new wireless GBA multiplayer adapter, but Nintendo has stated that it will announce more compatible titles in the future.
So this will *only* work with new games... which sorta stinks. The game has to support it. Which I imagine new ones will... but don't jump on the bandwagon yet. -
NOT backwards compatible
According to this article it's only compatible with games that support the attachment (last paragraph). So any multiplayer games you already have won't have wireless multiplayer. Seems like a big strike against itm especially since I believe there are other wireless adapters for the GBA that DO work with existing games.

Re:Look at it this way
You believe incorrectly - last year the GC was 100K units ahead of the Xbox in Europe, and there are no concrete sales sales figures for 2003.
There are estimates from 3rd party research firms, but those are not based on actual sales numbers - they're making a guess based on some methodology they won't disclose (see the SPA debacle over Mac sales a couple of years ago to see how wildly inaccurate these estimates are).
E.g., according to that gamespot article in the six months from Jan 2003 to June 2003 the GC went from 1.5 million units to 1.6 million while the Xbox went from 1.4 million to 2.3 million. So in six months, the GC only sold 6% more units than they managed in the entire previous year. While the Xbox managed to sell 64% of the previous year, again in half the time.
Given that Zelda sold 300,000 copies on the first weekend in Europe, and there really hasn't been a corresponding big game release for the Xbox, those numbers sound slightly dubious to me... -
Re:AffiliationI smell another story coming... anyone notice the link to this on GameSpot's editorial page?
Yeah, it's been going on for awhile, but in regard to GameSpy's "Overrated" list, this might make a good article.
(Damn... should have submitted that one!)

My personal pick: Shenmue
Shenmue was hyped to an amazing extent, both to players and to developers. Shenmue was going to revitalize the adventure game category, and show developers how games would be made from then on. If you go to Gamasutra, you can actually watch Yu Suzuki's original presentation of the game at the 2000 Game Developer Conference. It's a love-in of epic proportions.
Then the game was actually released. While it excelled in many areas - it had good characters, large environments, lots of interaction, etc, it also suffered from some severe gameplay problems that made it frustrating to play. Couple this with the fact that developers began to realize the resources the game required - five years of work by a one-hundred-person team! - and the development hype wore off as well. Eventually the shine wore off and reviewers began rating the game (or revising their ratings) based on how it actually played.
Disclaimer: I personally love Shenmue, and love its sequel, Shenmue II, even more. But I can recognize overhype when I see it. -
Re:Proof is in the PuddingThey're certainly trying. Two upcoming games from Microsoft Game Studios Japan:
Phantom Dust - 3rd person action shooting game with Live multiplayer and customizable characters with a choice of 300 abilities.
Magatama (Demon Fang Spirit) - 3rd person slash 'em up being worked on by the lead programmer of Final Fantasy VII.I regard Amped as one of Microsoft's inhouse successes too. Even if you prefer 1080, you have to accept that Amped is a serious contender for the title of best snowboarding game of all time. IMO, it is the best, but not everyone agrees.
Later.

Re:Three words:Maybe instead of posting a kneejerk reaction, you could read the reviews of people who have played the US localized version of it. They're almost entirely reviewers who expected to hate it, but ended up being won over.
An excerpt from the GameSpy review: "Although I was greatly looking forward to Final Fantasy X-2, I held a certain amount of apprehension because of all the changes Square was making to the game. After playing it for a spell, I needn't have worried..."
Don't like them? How about an IGN review: "Caveats aside, if Final Fantasy X-2 can manage to provide the same action, drama, and depth in its final four chapters that it did in the first, RPG nuts shouldn't have much to worry about come December..."
Still not good enough? Maybe the Gamespot review: "While we thought Final Fantasy X-2 would end up being viewed as an aberration in the Final Fantasy franchise, we're not so sure anymore."
Really, calm down. After all, you haven't actually played the game. Are ALL the reviewers wrong?

Read it and weep, jackass. The sales of the Xbox are nearly 50% higher than the GameCube in the European region. Japan is the only country on the planet where the GameCube isn't getting trounced by the PS2 and Xbox.

Re:Groundbreaking suggestion
A link might be helpful to explain why you're upset. We're used to the shitty 'clean out your desk by the end of the hour and leave with an escort' layoff style here in the U.S., but the process could hardly be more insulting to a Japanese employee.

Available for PC in November, and will probably be better than the XBox version.

Re:Seriously, what are they thinking?
You're wrong. ATI offers drivers exactly like NVidia does.
I believe you are wrong. ATI drivers use the freakin DRI of X, not the Nvidia drivers. ( Correct me if i'm wrong. ) Last time i tried to enable 3D hardware acceleration on Linux with an ATI card, it took 4 fuckin days to crawl all the gentoo forums and guess what ? It never worked properly and finally when i found out what the problem was, it seemed the ATI drivers were not supported with the lastest Xfree release. ( 4.3 att i believe. )
So you know what i did ? I said FUCK IT! Too bad for Enemy Territory! I'm not the kind of geek who is going to waste time playing with garbage to make it work, sorry ain't my type. Some things i just don't have the patience for...
I haven't tried to make them work again since then. I dono, they might work, although i heard the dev responsible for the linux drivers at ATI left the company a couple months ago. You can't just throw some Open garbage to the OSS community and then claim you support Linux. It just doesn't feel right at all.
More, in support of the parent message, i'm not buying a vid card for only 1 game, that's just incredibly stupid IMHO, and it's even more stupid of ATI thinking it will make any difference.
Oh and, to all, who gives a flyin fuck about half-life anways? Stop living in the past, the engine looks great, but the game feels like some old FPS where you only get your kicks from the cool lookin weaps and cool lookin graphics. If i can't ram it, bomb it or nuke it, i ain't interrested!
GET TRIBES VENGEANCE!
( Don't take the last few lines too seriously, i'm on a recruitement drive ;-P )

Re:GOD
There are certain things that can be said again and again, without being overly redundant.
I was a huge fan of the first Tecmo Bowl. It truly was an absolute masterpiece. The sad thing is, the ONLY time I ever got to the final game, my wife (ex now...) actually came out and unplugged my Nintendo, because I had been playing for like 15 hours straight.
So- keep on talking about Tecmo, because it really is one of the great ones. I don't know if I would play it today (some things are best left in the fog of my past) but I agree that no football game comes close.
There is something to look forward to though. If you have played NBA Street Vol. 2, you know how awesome that is. Soon, they will have NFL Street. No kicking, first down is 'at the trashcan', etc. etc. No wimpy QB's- because they gotta play some defense too. Maybe this can finally unseat Tecmo as my favorite sports game ever. Madden just doesn't do it for me.
Too much vicodin and caffeine...

Re:Phat ...
" is it just me or are the player models fatter than the pc version. Or is it just the horrible screenshots that gamespot provides."
CS has always been insanely out of perportion. When you make all the textures look good the unrealisticness of it all shines through
Take a look at this screenshot for example. So theres a ledge on the ground up to his knees(+2 points for whoever can think of something in real life that has a structure like that) and a flamible barrel bigger than he is.. with boxes that dwarf them also. It makes much better gameplay, but just looks silly with pretty textures.
Hopefully the game will be fast paced enough that you dont notice, like current counterstrike. Take a look at de_cbble some time, the map is supposed to be a persons house yet the door way are atleast twice as tall and three times as wide as you are. again, better gameplay. -
CS:CZ Theories
Theres something really odd.
CS:CZ's release date is sometime this month. So is HalfLife2.
Valve isnt /that/ stupid, so I think theyre bundling it. I'm thinking either condition zero will ship with hl2 or condition zero will be pushed over steam this wednesday. Theres no way valve will try to compete with their own game, It just wont work.
These screenshots just further help my theory -- Those are condition zero models and maps, but with some multiplayer maps
de_prodigy
de_dust
de_chateau
de_chateau
de_aztec(with the 1.6 bridge)
The CS:CZ models can be seen on here for comparison
A Gamespy article backs this up by saying
"On the multiplayer side, Condition Zero will contain ten new Counter-Strike maps, available exclusively through the retail package. For current Counter-Strike players, a v1.6 patch should be released right around the same time the game hits shelves, ensuring online compatibility between the two games. When When we spoke with Valve a few weeks back, they mentioned that they would likely release some of these maps to the public, perhaps one very few weeks. The guys at Ritual confirmed that this was a possiblity, but nothing official has been decided yet. It's worth pointing out that Valve has historically been pretty generous with this kind of thing, and we be surprised if an official map or two wasn't released to the community within weeks of CZ hitting shelves. "
So I'm thinking they are going to push cs:cz over steam, Possibly for free or maybe just at a very low cost. Theres no way you can sell it retail with HL2 coming out in mere weeks.

ACK! Correction:
Yeah, I used preview, but it's late and i'm tired..
Where I said "The Gamecube outsold the PS2 last week".. that is a typo. What it should have said is "The Gamecube outsold the PS2 last week IN JAPAN". This is still a very significant event, but not quite so much so as my typo'd version implied. :) My reference is here.. -
Typing Of The Dead
This Sega game for the PC was what did it for me. Originally it was an arcade game called something like 'House Of The Dead' with plastic guns where to shot the zombies.
In the PC touch-typing version you have to type strings before they get you. It's a great learning aid for those who get bored with normal tutorial software. Window$ only though
:-(Having said that it only teaches you the conventional QWERTY keyboard layout. I have heard that the dvorak layout is better for coders as the puctuation characters are more sensibly placed for a coder.

Re:Xbox Live? And other things...Last I heard there were no plans for HL2 on any other platform, Xbox included.
Then you're behind the times. Here's one story, here's another, and, what the heck, one more.
The timeline goes something like this: Valve said before E3 that an Xbox version of Half-Life 2 was in the works. Not long after E3, a guy at Microsoft (David Hufford, a product manager in the Xbox group) was quoted in the Puget Sound Business Journal as saying that the Xbox version of Half-Life 2 wasn't coming. About 24 hours later, Valve had reconfirmed that Xbox would get a version of Half-Life 2 and, in fact, the online version of article in the PSBJ had been CHANGED (as opposed to corrected/retracted - a practice I despise) to remove the reference to Half-Life 2 not coming to Xbox.
Now, obviously, this is something that could change down the line (the earliest possible date for Xbox Half-Life 2 would probably be summer 2004) if Valve decides that the Xbox hasn't got the juice to do the game justice, but right now at this moment an Xbox version is in the pipeline.

Alright, I've had just about enough of the untruths flying around here. Pre-hate if you must, but please be accurate.
Here is the GBA version of THPS:GBA
And here is the N-Gage version:N-Gage
C'mon folks, you don't have to like it, but at least be honest. The GBA version is barely the same game while the N-Gage version is exactly the same as the original.
Someone keeps modding me down for not towing the party line here, but its clear this device is not going to do well, so why keep lying about it? -

Been done before
Nintendo had a similar engine in Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble for the Gameboy Color, where the player had to tilt the Gameboy to make Kirby roll. And the gyroscope thing was inside the game cartridge too.
Too bad the GBA SP loads the cartridges from below, making the game unplayable. :) -

Re:Dont forget...Hmm, several of the screenshots for Driver 3 look like Miami.
Makes me wonder if they were trying to beat GTA:VC to the punch. Others look like they're set in Europe though, so I could be way off.

Dont forget...
Driver 3 (ps2 link, but it also comes out on XBOX, GC and PC), and T.H.U.G. (tony hawks underground, XBOX link, and its on everything but PC) Driver 3 will be a grittier, more realistic, more rigid GTA, with some of the nicest graphics ive ever seen; THUG will be tony hawk, just with some GTA features... I think they are trying to take a bite out of GTA's market share by adding some gimmicks. The city building feature, however, is pretty cool.

Re:Yes. Steel Battalion is a good example
They didn't cancel Warcraft Adventures because of Lucasarts, they canceled it because it wasn't going to be a good game.
An interview with Bill Roper tends to agree with me. He basicially admits it was too much of a classic adventure game, while Lucasarts was touting Monkey Island III and Grim Fandango, both being the "next level of adventure games". AKA, Lucasarts had some 3D in them, and of course 3D was the big buzzword back in that time period, so a 2D, but excellent looking adventure game aparently wouldn't sell at all.
Sorry. I know many people out there aren't big adventure gamers now that the market has grown, but some of us "old school" gamers hate to see one of the old segments of the gaming industry die in favor of yet another FPS or something. -
Sad
I went out and bought Fox Hunt just because I saw it on a certain (extremely attractive) actress's resume. After dealing with software issues (who writes these brain-dead installers?), I went through about 5 minutes of crude game play, potty humor, and really really bad acting before I realized that I'd never be able to do the game long enough to see the object of my obsession. Being a stalker is all very well, but there are things you just can't do!

A better preview at GamespotCheck out the preview at Gamespot.com for more information. They also have screenshots and video clips up.
I'm not sure if this page is subscriber-only or not (I subscribe to gamespot), so here's the text of their review just in case:
At a recent Nintendo press event, Vivendi Universal had on display a playable GameCube version of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, its new mission-oriented action and driving game based on the long-lived animated franchise. We sat down to play the game for a few minutes with little idea of what to expect, and frankly we were surprised to learn that Hit & Run is best described as Grand Theft Auto: Springfield. Indeed, the newest Simpsons games shares a whole lot of gameplay mechanics with the most recent GTA games, and from what we gathered while playing it in its early state, Hit & Run may just marry the Simpsons franchise and the GTA formula successfully.
The Hit & Run demo began simply by casting the player as Homer Simpson and sending him out into the world of Springfield looking for tasks to complete. The game very overtly guides you toward your next goal--it tells you which character you need to speak with to initiate the mission, and then once your objective is understood, it indicates on a minimap where you should go and also overlays the road with arrows pointing toward your destination. For the first task, Marge sent Homer to the Kwik-E-Mart to buy a new supply of ice cream, and subsequent missions had Homer racing Principal Skinner to the elementary school or searching for Ned Flanders' purloined possessions. You'll get around Springfield mostly by car, starting with the Simpsons' familiar pink sedan. Of course, in true Grand Theft Auto style you can also run into the street and nab other motorists' vehicles if you get bored with or destroy your own car.
Graphically, Hit & Run is looking decent, and its style is about what you'd expect from yet another 3D Simpsons game. The character models are solid and the frame rate is quite smooth, although the demo was fraught with camera anomalies. These will surely be cleared up before the game's release, though. It seems that the entire voice cast of the show has recorded new dialogue for the game, which is always refreshing. The constant stream of wisecracks and one-liners adds a lot to the Simpsons-like atmosphere, from what we heard.
Vivendi says that a variety of characters will be playable later on in The Simpsons: Hit & Run, although we only got to see Homer in action during our brief time with the game. In addition to driving to and fro, you can also collect a sort of coin scattered around town, attack hapless pedestrians, and double-jump your way to obscure areas. Though the quality of past Simpsons games may have been dubious, we have to say that there's something strangely likable about Hit & Run. You can drive all over Springfield, talk to famous town residents, and go inside and explore fully modeled and recognizable locations from the TV series, and even apart from the actual mission structure of the game, these things are enjoyable for fans of the show. Of course, we'll have to wait for the finished product to find out if the mission-based gameplay actually holds up over many hours of playtime. The Simpsons: Hit & Run is currently scheduled for release in September. Stay tuned for more coverage.

Discount GC too soon?I'd just like to say this article is quite ridiculous, but even if the entire article is a TROLL, I will respond.
There are a number of GameCube releases that excite me in the future:
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
I do not own a GameCube currently but I'm planning on buying one to play these two games...
Still, I'm glad to have a PS2 so I can play this game:
