Re:who cares?
The video itself looks just fine under any other medium.
The only giant pixels are because its on YouTube (or do you mean the giant blocks of concrete that have lost all detail in YouTube?)
The original video has parts of it motion blurred, filled with smoke and particle effects, and heat blur. Some of the lighting effects (night w/spot lights) are gorgeous, and YouTube truly does not do it justice.
Try taking a look at it, as it was meant to be seen. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/21504.html ... of course you already knew that. -

When he ends each sentence? Just watched some presentations he made about id Tech 5 and apparently he does. Now I don't want to be rude or disrespectful or anything, just curious - what would that "weird sound" be? -

Re: This trailer?
The trailer they are trying to get canned is http://www.gametrailers.com/player/17392.html
Its named a gameplay montage rather than a trailer. It shows several methods of killing, from neck breaks, decaps, shooting, and cutting with a weird 3 bladed weapon that apparently can also catch fire and build up a lot of static.
I can see their objection to it being used as a trailer, but as far as being game content isn't all that much more graphic than a lot of other games. -

Bouncing tits
Once I asked a Japanese developers what came to his mind when comparing Japan-based console (e.g. PS3, Wii, etc.) and US-based consoles (e.g. XBox 360):
Bouncing tits.
Yes, bouncing tits. He replied without blinking. "The former sold games with rocky tits while the latter sold games with bouncing tits."
Japan based consoles manufacturers care about the reaction of traditional Japanese parents so they tend to sell games with relatively 'clean' contents(even the external game developers are aware of their concern). That'd be in contrast with your believes in Japanese culture when looking at their AV and H productions, but think about the major market segment of game consoles in Japan comprised of very young children, this could be understandable.
What I want to say is, Ken Kutaragi faced the major challenge from Wii, not XBox 360, in Japan.
....Actually, I wanted to talk about bouncing tits not Ken Kutaragi from the very beginning, sorry. -

Re:Still missing one thing.
Okay... look at this halo 3 gameplay trailer : http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=19430&t
y pe=wmv and tell me why the hell the player is unable to hit most targets that are a couple of meters away and only slowly moving? At one point he even shoots around in confusion because he can't track the enemy at a sufficient speed. I realise the game has been designed with this in mind (e.g. missing a lot, forgiving collision detection, wide area weapons) but it just takes the point away from fps. The nice thing about keyboard/mouse control is the smoothness with which the two devices combine their motion (other than the curled up fingers and the resulting pain from the wsad keys... a technical hurdle that could easily be solved with a special device for your keyboard hand sporting a couple of buttons and an intuitive direction control). Take a look at some counterstrike demos and appreciate the difference. -
Re:Doesn't mention the little problem of broken DRPeople were having trouble with DVD capacity last generation. I remember a few multi-DVD PS2 games.
Insomniac's Brian Hastings had this to say about the space issue: If you ever hear someone say "Blu-Ray isn't needed for this generation," rest assured they don't make games for a living. At Insomniac, we were filling up DVDs on the PS2, as were most of the developers in the industry. We compressed the level data, we compressed the mpeg movies, we compressed the audio, and it was still a struggle to get it to fit in 6 gigs. Now we've got 16 times as much system RAM, so the level data is 16 times bigger. And the average disc space of games only gets bigger over a console's lifespan. As games get bigger, more advanced and more complex, they necessarily take up more space. If developers were filling up DVDs last generation, there are clearly going to be some sacrifices made to fit current generation games in the same amount of space.
Granted, some really great Xbox 360 games have squeezed onto a DVD9. Gears of War is a beautiful game and shows off the highest resolution textures of anything yet released, partly because of the Unreal Engine's ability to stream textures. This means that you can have much higher resolution textures than you could normally fit in your 512 MB of RAM. It also means that you're going to chew up more disc space for each level. With streamed textures, streamed geometry and streamed audio, even with compression, you can quickly approach 1 GB of data per level. That inherently limits you to a maximum of about 7 levels, and that's without multiplayer levels or mpeg cutscenes.
Sometimes people ask us, "If Resistance takes 14 gigabytes, why doesn't it look better than Gears?" Well, for one, Resistance didn't support texture streaming, so we had to make choices about where we spent our high-res textures. Resistance also had 30 single-player chapters, six multiplayer maps, uncompressed audio streaming, and high-definition mpegs. That all added up to a lot of space on the disc. Starting with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction we are supporting texture streaming, which will make the worlds look even better, and will also consume even more space on disc.
There's no question that you can always cut more levels, compress the audio more, compress the textures more, down-res the mpeg movies, and eventually get any game to fit on a DVD. But you paid for a high-def experience, right? You want the highest resolution, best audio, most cinematic experience a developer can offer, right? That's why Blu-Ray is important for games, and why it will become more important each year of this hardware cycle. -

Interesting
I haven't played this series since Vice City and I'm glad that we finally get a modern, more stylized version of it. The voiceover seems to point at some Russian/Eastern European immigrant moving up the ranks in American crime. It's reminiscent of the beginning in movies like The Godfather or Scarface where you see the world through the eyes of a newcomer.
Here's the direct download link for the 720P WMV file. Or, you can see it on YouTube as well. -
Re:PS3 AdvantageI work in a company that does open world games (and good ones actually). I have to tell you the "hobbling" isn't true. Insomniac would like to disagree with you. Heard of Huxley?
Just from observing the trend of MMO's, we can see that everyone is constantly trying to re-invent the wheel when it comes to the enjoyable traits of gameplay. Despite Planetside's dismal failure, other company's are infact trying to re-invent the MMOFPS.

I've been following the details of this game since it was first announced at E3 two years ago. I'm an avid raider in WoW and this is the ONLY mmo that has caught my attention. I'm also a fan of paper based RPG games and for reasons I can not explain this MMO has a Rifts (Palladium) feel to it. If any of you are still on the search for a good MMOFPS, i'd recommend checking this out. It should be out sometime this year and will be running on the Unreal Engine 3. -
Re:Fluids in games
Full water is a ways off since it requires a large area to be simulated (well, you can simulate puddles, but not anything you can swim through). However real smoke animates are on their way since you can easily confine smoke to a reasonably small area. Nvidia's smokebox demo was created to show off the 8800's processing power with realistic smoke rendering, and the results of that demo are already being integrated into games. Movies more information are on the creator's website:

Re:I have to disagree
Completely in agreement with you on that one. Sony will get the exclusive bump once the exclusives are, yknow, there. By the way, Final Fantasy XIII is in development (with a very smooth looking trailer) but there is no release date set (I hear mid-late '08).
I'm not a fan of the MGS series, so that's a no go for me. However, White Knight Story (no release date) also looks pretty nice. It looks like the GAMES are going to determine the success or failure of the PS3, and that should come as no shock to anyone who's been paying attention. -
The 360's real liability is its game selection
So, I've been kicking around the idea of getting a 360 for months, now. I was close, but put off by the sticker shock, and decided to hold off for a bit longer. Maybe until a price drop.
A couple days ago, though, I went over to a friend's place; she manages a small EBgames store, and has a 360 and just about every notable game for it. It was just a small get-together, so a bunch of us spent some time browsing through her collection of 360 games. I'm glad I didn't buy one.
Gears of War. Rainbow 6: Vegas. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. FEAR. YAWW2FPS (Call of Duty something, I think). Dead Rising. Saint's Row. Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Dead or Alive 4.
Incidentally, most of these games are the most popular on the 360. Notice something? It's almost entirely FPS. R6:V, CoD and GRAW are your archetypical boring, generic, sequel shovelware. Gears of War and FEAR are both good games in their own right, but considering the company they're in, they don't exactly stand out. Then you have yet another Splinter Cell game, which falls in the same boat: a good game, but reeking of been-there-done-that. Next is Dead Rising, a good game with a few very, very deep flaws, but basically fun, and Dead or Alive 4: an uninspired button-masher fighter that doesn't look like its had its sprites updated in years. Nevermind that the game ought to come with a jar of vaseline, as it's mainly beat-off material for teenagers.
It's not that the 360's game lineup is all that bad, it's just that the console's been out for a year now, and the best game on it is a FPS, on a console that's drowning in FPSes. Yet where are the RPGs? Oblivion and its broken leveling system and litany of cut-and-paste caves/dungeons? Bottom-of-the-JRPG barrel drek like Enchanted Arms (if you're not acquainted with how agonizingly bad this game is, take a look at some of the gameplay videos on Gametrailers)?
If the 360 really has a weakness, its the utter lack of diversity in its games. It's a hell of generic sequelism. That's fine in a launch console, but not a year after release. -
Re:Mirror?
Can anyone post the HD version (I know...46 Mb is kinda big) for me to look at? Please?
I downloaded a fairly high-quality .MOV from GameTrailers.com earlier.
I like the visuals (the white sands contrasting with the deep-blue-to-black sky) and the sound and animation look great, but the presence of pre-rendered footage in advertising a computer game still annoys me. But I do hope Bungie steals the specular map for the pre-rendered Whatsit Chief's armour - it looks far better than the slightly naff, moulded-plastic effort being flaunted in in-game screenshots... -
Re:Other PS3 scams include...
Ok... "Other PS3 scams include"...
I know you are just playing on the headline, and it's cute too. But I'm getting tired of this anti-Sony moderator clique modding up these trolls. +5 Insightful? +5 Drivel.
Committing to a worldwide launch and failing to deliver because of technical breakdowns doesn't constitute a scam. Yes it blows hard for people in the EU, and it's very unfortunate that TECHNICAL PROBLEMS HAPPEN... but they do! It blows my mind that these "technically inclined" people of slashdot can't grasp that technical problems cause drops in production regardless of industry.
Oh this is classic. I love how you implied more than one company was shutdown due to legal fees from litigation with Sony. Can you please cite these companies for us? I know of Liksang. While I agree Sony was heavy handed in their approach, I also understand the risk they face by allowing imports. Regardless of who imported the unit and why, it was NOT certified as a safe product for use in those countries. I think this might put Sony at risk for all sorts of litigation if a dangerous hardware failure occurred. But then again, maybe not. The PS3 should work in any location... although I'm not certain.
While some of the inital E3 footage was "as close as possible to what PS3 can do", it was pre-rendered in some/many/can't remember, not all cases. But if we pull our head out of the sand, we see that NEW trailers and videos have emerged since May 2005. I will go out on a limb here and say that almost all recent trailers for PS3 games (aside from clear pre-rendered footage .. Genji) are rendered in real time. Mind you they do look good, but most PS3 games are still very much video game looking. If you don't believe it, just check out gametrailers.com.
Oh well.

Exclusive bullshit
It used to be that if you wanted to play any game you merely had to purchase every console. Yes, it was expensive but we did it for the exclusive games that were only available on a single system.
Now they are trying to make it so that if you want to play every bit of a cross platform game you have to buy multiple copies? Screw that. When Soul Calibur II came out with exclusive characters on each system, I responded by not buying the damn game. Here it looks like Rockstar is trying to generate artificial demand for downloadable content; something else designed to extract money from gamers.
Yea, yea, feed me the line about games costing so much money to produce now. I don't care. Movies cost several million dollars to produce and you can buy the DVD for a single Andrew Jackson. Gamers are being charged three times that much for something that only cost a fraction of the price. Yes I understand that there are other factors here... I'm not that dense, it's just that they don't need to nickel-and-dime us afterwards.
I'm tired of companies raising prices and then charging more for the "privelidge" of playing online. I'm tired of companies cramming questionable tech down our throats that only raises cost and causes delays. I'm tired of games that are strictly service based even though you still have to pay full retail price. I'm tired of companies charging me yet again for games that I already own; I mean I already have two copies of Super Mario World, two copies of Super Mario 64, and three fricking copies of The Legend of Zelda and for only 23 more dollars, I can play them all on one console. Hooray for shovelware.
Yes I'm ranting. Sorry about that. The whole thing just makes me wonder why I play games anymore. Can I at least get an "amen"? -

The footage looks freaking sweet (sometimes almost to the point of near-photorealistic quality), and after having played FarCry I can't wait to see how this game will turn out.
But how on earth wouldn't the Xbox360 or PS3 be able to run this game? I would think that, since the PS3 isn't even released and the 360 is pretty much still beginning, that the developers would be able to crank out alot more stuff than which was allready shown off in either games or previews.

Valve and Portals and PreyThe portal idea is attractive one. I haven't been keeping up with the games industry enough to hear much about Prey and its use of the technology before this review, but I had seen the trailer for Valve's Portal technology (also available on Steam):
http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=13
The trailer shows the use of a portal gun that seems to be an evolution on Valve's Gravity Gun from HL2, so you can pick up objects and such while traveling through portals. Watching the trailer made me really want to play with that technology, and after reading the review, I might have to try Prey when it's a little cheap.
Does Prey have multiplayer? I'm thinking that almost any of the multiplayer games based on Steam would be insane with the portal gun thrown in.

Megatextures video
This hi-res movie of Quake Wars went up recently, and honestly it doesn't look that great. The ground textures looks flat and splotchy. I understand that the "MegaTexture" tech may be about making games run faster, not necessarily a graphical imporvement, but, for example, I've seen screenshots and videos of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. from a couple years ago that looked much more photorealistic (the environment, not the character models which were below average looking) and when I played a leaked version it ran really fast and had huge draw distances and enviroment to explore.

You'd have to pry my mouse and keyboard out of my cold, dead hands.. but on the other hand, this Red Steel trailer does make the first person gameplay with the Wii controller look pretty damn fun.
