Re: Completely FALSE
It appears as if this movie is being specifically targeted with down votes.
It's almost as if Brie Larson made an OOPSIE and people are reacting to it... and then being labeled "trolls" for daring having an opinion that's different than the accepted narrative...
https://movieweb.com/captain-marvel-brie-larson-inclusion-controversy/
Where have we seen that before uh
... ? This is typical 2016+ damage control. Says something dumb. Get called out. Walk it back but at the same time paint anyone you displeased as "Russian" or "Troll" or "Gamergater" or any other pejorative term you can think of to make it seem like all the backlash was illegitimate. -
Slashdot Faux Fox News For Nerds.Let's be clear about what Neflix has here
Exclusives are never exclusive forever in this business:
Essentially what this means is that right after movies hit the shelves on DVD and Blu Ray, they will make their way to Netflix and will never make it to other streaming services as long as the deal is in place. The movies will be available exclusively to stream on Netflix for the same period of time that they would usually be shown on standard cable TV, so though the movies will eventually find their way to more traditional outlets, it will be an even longer wait than usual.
Netflix Gets Disney, Marvel, Star Wars Exclusively in September
I am not crying any tears for Amazon. Films from the Disney collective have dominated home video sales since their first release on VHS. Zootopia will be released on June 7th and pre-sales of the DVD/Bllu-ray/Blu-ray 3D have already made the film a top ten/top 100 bestseller.
Though things could get interesting when Disney makes its move in 4K.

Yeah, a hoodie with a full face hood, you know, like a ski mask, or a Scramble Suit.

Re:Gotta Admire the way James Cameron rolls
His post-Titanic dives were for two underwater documentaries, Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep, during which he also developed his 3D camera technology. He also did some TV in there too (Dark Angel and a couple other things). People make it sound like he was on vacation between Titanic and Avatar, but he has 5 directing credits during that period and advanced the state of the art for 3D, not to mention underwater exploration and filming. In between writing & directing the 2 highest grossing films of all time... not too shabby. Anyway, your characterization of him as a rich layabout "kicking back" is pretty off base. If anything he's obsessively driven.
If his dives had any research relevance to Avatar, it may have been for flora & fauna inspiration. Also, it's been reported that Avatar 2 will be largely underwater.

Superman Anyone?
Reminds me of the Superman rights/trademark issue. Where he has to be trademarked in every domain (comics, movies, clothing, toys, etc...). PC machines vs OS. And yes, sometimes it creates stupid scenarios such as this. A nd, with Superman, sounds like DC/WB have their hands full now (well, the specific issue at hand has been going on a while). Possible scenarios are say the original creators controlling his looks, DC controlling the name. From a forum (so salt and all that):
*The blue and white, electrically-powered Superman of the 1990s was created for precisely this reason. In case the families won the rights to the intellectual property of Superman, they would have to change Superman's look and powers. So the electrical Superman was created as a back-up in case this happened, because DC would still own his name but not his image.
*The names Superman and Superboy, or the Superman costume have never been used in the Smallville TV series.
*Superboy was killed off in Infinite Crisis, and Superboy Prime was re-named Superman Prime. This happened at a time when a ruling against DC made it look like they would lose the Superboy copyright.

Let's face it
The reason the studios are pushing so hard on 3D is because there is a lot of money in it. They can charge a lot more for a 3D ticket. And once the overhead on the equipment is paid (the projector for the theater, the cameras for the production, the trivial costs of some cheap plastic glasses), all that extra money is almost pure profit. The reason that Nolan is able to resist their push is because he's already established himself with the franchise. If they were appointing a newbie to do it, you can bet they would be TELLING him to do Batman in 3D.
3D has always a been dubious contribution to the art. For every James Cameron who likes to see what he can do with it, there are dozens of filmmakers who have it foisted on them by the studio (many of them after-the-fact). And while the big boys can resist, I doubt the pressure will let up anytime soon. As long as there is money to be made, the studios will ride this train. The only thing that will stop it would be if audiences starting to forgo the overpriced 3D versions for the 2D versions in droves, or if some kind of studio/theater price war started on 3D tickets (making it difficult for the studios to rape us so easily).
Is this a fad that probably SHOULD pass? Maybe. Is it being overused now? Definitely. Is it going anywhere, as long as the studios can reap big money off of it? Almost certainly not.

Re:Justifying piracy on Slashdot
Dear misinformed,
Due to the advent of technological advancement and the internet, formerly scarce works have become common and easily downloaded due to the non scarce nature of information, this has got westerners and excessively pro corporate, pro business peoples panties in a twist from which they have never recovered. Capitalist philosophy only makes sense when an item a person wants to consume is scarce, otherwise the "evil" socialist economics can work (and piracy is a lesson in that it works FYI). Therefore copyright has become a highly charged issue because nature of information and political economic ideology of western capitalism are at odds.
According to neoclassical economics because of the non scarce nature of digital works, their worth should be driven down towards zero and many businesses should be going bankrupt, note that this has not happened and the Movie industry has recently broken box office records. Please refer to Dark Knight released in 2008 in the following list below of top grossing box office movies of all time.
http://www.movieweb.com/movies/boxoffice/alltime.php
The nature of copyright and software licensing has always been questionable from the outset, because the public was not informed enough to mount resistance to the idea of software licensing and EULA's. So many industries got their way by way of public ignorance. Industries later gathered together lobbying more as the internet rose to power and their response to non scarcity of information was in the form of the DMCA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act
Which added to the already dubious practice of licensing software (individuals never own their software) which most nerds have always thought dubious at best (See: Linux)
The advent of the DMCA and licensing prevents legitimate owners of software from outright owning and modifying what they bought due to crazy EULA's and liscensing that weaseled it's way into "normalcy" due to public technological ignorance, which attempted to limit software owners rights to ownership and rights to develop their own software to work with the software they already own. This has pissed off the informed who understand these issues. See: Bnetd
http://www.eff.org/cases/blizzard-v-bnetd
Corporations and the bad kinds of capitalists alike have been trying to wrest individual ownership from the people by infringing on their individual rights to own the products they buy. Software companies have always been one of the worst industries due to the idea of licensing software to individuals, rather then individuals being able to own software outright and do whatever they wish with it.
Enterprising individuals like John carmack who released open source doom, etc, and Volition Inc of Freespace 2 fame (see: http://scp.indiegames.us/ ) have been breaths of fresh air for the informed among us as they understand the deeper issues of software patents, copyright and software ownership by and large.
John carmack does not believe in software patents, and is tired of the stupid shit that such patents and overzealous and excessive copyright abuses, to see his frustrations and problems with such see here:
http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2004/07/4048.ars
The slashdot community has been getting pissed at the lack of reasoning power in hypercapitalist america, it seems in general that america has an excessive amount of brain dead people and anti-intellectualism, and the rise of super corporate indoctrinated nerd drones, this anti intellectualism and lack of intellectual depth increasingly found in certain americans or others so indoctrinated against intellectual understanding is epitomized in the following link

Re:PKD Movies
Actually, yes...
http://www.movieweb.com/news/02/24002.php
Alanis Morissette has come aboard the upcoming film Radio Free Albemuth. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is an adaptation of Philip K. Dick's semiautobiograhical novel.
John Alan Simon has written the film, which he will also direct. Morissette will play Sylvia, a woman that shows up in the vision of a record label executive. In reality, she is a woman suffering from lymphoma who gets a job as a secretary.
Morissette stated, "I am a big fan of Philip K. Dick's poetic and expansively imaginative books. I feel blessed to portray Sylvia, and to be part of this story being told in film."
I hope they include a recording of "Come To The Party", a song critical to the book's plotline. -

How about Star Trek TOS collectors edition? You'll be buying it on HDDVD, as it comes only as a combo IIRC.

Re:Number of movies
If you look here. A majority of the Blue Ray movies are older. I counted 15 that are about a year old. For Example:
Resident Evil
Scooby Doo
Hitchikers Guide
Courage Under Fire
HDDVD has a a few too (counted 6), but I think blue-ray flooded the market with older movies. -
Read 'Fockers,' thought 'Feebles'
Journey into the mind of a madman:
At first I was thinking he pirated "Meet the Feebles" and wondering how the hell you could get sued for pirating low-budget, hobbit-issued Muppet porn. Then it registered that it was "Meet the Fockers" and figured the studio needed the money, cos it looked like an abominable movie from the preview. Then I found out the damn thing grossed $279.167 million and thought "that can't be it." Then I remembered Barbara Streisand was in it and figured they probably were in the hole still from paying her royalties. So this guy went from being cool, to being lame, to partial redemption for suing the MPAA

Top 100 Grossing Movies Of All Time

There's also some psychology in this, too.
Familiarity makes you more inclined to like something.
For example, experiments were done where people were shown a stack of photographs and were asked to rate the photographs in terms of how flattering they were to the subject. The stack included a photo of themselves. In the control group, their photo was normal, but with the experimental group, their photo was a mirror image (flopped, in photography parlance).
The experimental group statistically rated their photos higher. The reasoning was that the flopped image is what you see when you look in a mirror -- that is, you see yourself in the mirror more often than as you actually are, so you are more familar with that image of yourself.
So, not surprisingly, the original trilogy is more familiar to people then the new trilogy. Moreover, I think than when some fans actually saw Episodes I and II, it did not live up to expectations, and people disliked them more than they would have otherwise. As for the rest of the crowd, not surprisingly, most people are fair weather fans: they saw Episode IV because of the hype and they saw Episode I because of the hype. Although I didn't run across this list adjusted for inflation, the box office sales indicate this as well, with the best sellers being Episode IV, Episode I, Episode II, Episode VI, and finally Episode V.
Going back to familiarity, think about when you're in a restaurant, and you order an iced tea, and the waiter accidentally brings you a Coke. That first taste is awful! Not because the Coke was bad, but because you were expecting iced tea. Once you know what to expect, even the second sip will taste better.
I think many fans had played up what they thought the prequels would be like, but when Lucas delivered, it wasn't what they were expecting, and they got angry. There are probably some other reasons why people didn't like the movies (one of which is probably the fact that Lucas's insights on proto-fascism might be turning some people off as well)
I enjoyed the movies, I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and Episode II is my favorite out of the five I've seen. The new movies are flawed, but so were the old ones. All five of them have wit, low-brow humor, great special effects, cheesy special effects, memorable dialog, and groan-worthy dialog. However, I think Lucas is tying together two themes. First, he describes an almost-utopia into a dystopia, and its effort to rise again. Second, the story is about a good character gone bad and how they can be redeemed. The fact that those two themes are in a story arc that are carried though a thirty year effort shows Lucas' movies haven't actually changed much at all. -
Re:Why this film will fail.
I would have to say those films (Matrix 1 & 2) successed despite Reeves bad acting. I pray that Scanner will too. Most of the films he's stared in failed to make the list of Top 100 Grossing Films. The Matrix 1 and 2 only made the list due to good screen writing and directing (IMHO), and the masterpiece Home Alone beat both of those at the box office. So whats your point?

Report card presentationI only skimmed the FA, because I actually watched the presentation from the NIMF as it was aired on C-SPAN yesterday (and you can, too if you don't mind RealPlayer - there's a link).
From what I saw, they did raise a few interesting points -- the AO rating, for example... Based on some of the clips they showed from the M rated games, even I began to wonder what it took to bump a game from M to AO. I guess only the makers and purchasers of "Singles" know for sure. I figure that ESRB M is sort of like MPAA R (just like NC-17, apparently few retailers will carry AO), and I'm thinking that if they were from movies, some of those clips would would have pushed the MPAA to NC-17, especially if you consider Team America had a tough time getting an R, and it's all puppets. The speaker essentially said why have an AO rating, if there isn't anything that can bump you into AO teritory?
On the other hand, you could easily argue that these rating systems make parents feel they don't need to pay attention to what their children are playing, and that's probably bad.

Easy fix for internet addiction: "Get A Life"
Serious - if all you do is chatting, gaming and slashdotting... then what's your life about? But if you use the web to EXPAND your possibilities, that's a different matter.
Examples:
- from online gaming to live gaming
- from internet reading to visiting libraries or watching TV documentaries
- From reading politics news to getting _actually_ involved in politics
- From just chatting to meeting "real" people you can hang out with...
So, it all depends whether you're using the internet to [Morpheus]Open your mind[/Morpheus] or becoming [Smith]just another one in the system[/Smith]... it can liberate you or enslave you.
Think about it. Do you plan to become a 100% cybernetic loser like the girl in "The Net"?

I too was disappointed; Rumour has it that Verhoven has plans for a "real" sequel to his first robocop movie.. and lets face it: A violent cynical social criticism is what makes for a good robocop movie. The sappy sequel had its moments (The prototypes etc).. but the third movie.. gah.

Geek movies rule the universe!
Actually, geek movies have certainly ruled the box office for quite a while (Check the top grossing films here).
Top 10 grossing films:
1. Titanic (okay... not so geeky... well, maybe a little geekish)
2.Star Wars, Episode 4 (geek enough?)
3. E.T. ('nuff said)
4.Star Wars, Episode 1 (see #2)
5. Spider-Man (See #3)
6. LOTR, RoTK (Classic geekdom)
7.Jurassic Park (geek-o-saurs)
8.LOTR, TT (Classic geekdom, redux)
9.Finding Nemo (Geek fish?)
10. Forrest Gump (Geek is as geek does)
The top 10 certainly is dominated by the science fiction/fantasy/comic book genres which are, natch, close to any geek's heart (including this one's). -
