Pure Pwnage? c. 2004
It's incredible how this all started with Jeremy asking EA to "suck his balls," way back in 2004. Who knew they listened to customer feedback?
Well, EA can still suck my balls, and there's no religious group that will intimidate me from making such a request.
http://www.purepwnage.com/ has the full video, but there's egregious ad-portals in front of them. So you only have to sit through one, it's Season 1, Episode 3. The whole thing's worth watching, but the quote is at 4:14.
As for fundamentalist family groups, they can suck my balls too. I can only hate on EA so much.

Two Words
Doctor Horrible
Sure, we'll probably be seeing a lot more of this (this is the internet, folks, there's a lot of indie stuff out there).
Will networks pick it up? Probably not.
Is this the future of Cable? Definitely not. This business model won't pad the executives pockets enough.
This type of action does work for some shows though. Showcase in Canada picked this show up after a few successful "seasons" online.
There is, then, hope for these indie/online content producers, in the same way that there is hope for those who make iP*d apps and Steam/XBL online games.
It probably won't make anyone a few hundred million dollars, but it might net a few people a couple hundred thousand, which is still a very respectable amount of money when you're not burning it on 10,000/night hookers. -
Re:Torrent?
http://www.mininova.org/tor/2882031
The submitter says they are crap web quality though (ripped from website). Couldn't find a DVD rip, but I didnt look very hard.
Never heard of this show. Hopefully it will be along the lines of pure pwnage, which incidentally has all their eps in decent quality up for free download (and has apparently been picked up by showcase ?!?).
Now thats a real success story! -
Re:Sounds promising, but...Again, the views and reasoning behind the change and legislation is there on the site, as well as being all over the internet. Unless you had your head in the sand during the TBP trial you would have heard the various founders of TPB and pirat partiet talking about their philosophy at length. Their position is that the business model of selling content that is trivially easy to copy and distribute over the internet makes no sense in today's society, and there is no logical reason why it should be protected by law!
It's strange how people still claim that we 'have to' pay for DVD's and the like when TV shows are constantly being broadcast into our homes which are 100% free and advertisement supported. Other business models exist and always have! I can't personally make head or tales of your suppositions, since the most money i've ever spent on merch for a show is on Pure Pwnage, a web show that i'm very fond of, and which is distributed 100% free over the internet.
The entire point of the pirate party is the philosophy that, when it comes to filesharing, 'the cure is worse than the disease.' Do you really want to live in a society where governments can randomly target anyone in a huge section of the population for jail time or massive fines over a trivial offence? If 7 million people in the UK are sharing, then 11.5% of the population has been criminalised for a normal activity! How does that make sense? Is it really fair for the government to put out a law that is almost immediately worth £50k * 7 mil = £350 billion in fines?! That's 1/6th of Britain's entire GDP! That's pretty out of touch with reality if you ask me.
If, in your opinion, the pirate party is wrong... don't vote for them. Your ideals obviously don't match theirs.

Re:Finally
There is a popular business model that takes advantage of such persons. First, get the user hooked on free content, then milk their addiction by offering plenty of goodies for purchase that can 'enhance' their experience, or allow them to show off to their friends. There are many MMO's such as Perfect World that offer the game for free, but encourage the user to buy items that grant a competitive or cosmetic edge in-game. Similarly, the online TV-series Pure Pwnage offers episode downloads for free, but has a number of related accessories available at its 'noobstore'.

Re:quake?
What they need are some simulations to help with military micromanagement. This guy would be very helpful in such an area as a consultant. He has mad micro skills.

Re:Megatrends?
it's hard to find good stories in games compared to how damn many are coming out now.
Watch the first five minutes, and that sums up the quality of games and the quality of critics on games, and how I feel - I agree with this about 99%. When people keep crying about how there's no stories, I've been using this to make my counter example.
Quick summary: if you want a story, go read a book or a watch a movie, but a game is meant to be played. You didn't need a story line to go defeat Bowser in Mario. You didn't need to know the Princess' life story when rescuing her from Donkey Kong, you simply jumped over the barrels because it was FUN. -
That reminds me...
From the intro to the latest Pure Pwnage:
If I wanted a compelling story, I'd read a book. There's only a few million of them already in exsistence, the majority of which were written by people whose talents compare to the best video game writers the same way Kobe Bryant's penis might compare to that of a poorly endowed tit mouse. If enduring 90 minutes of CGI cut scenes dubbed with pornography grade voice acting sounds exciting to you, I suggest you immediately navigate your web browser to the neighborhood torrent site and start downloading something called a movie. Any of them really, because apparently you're very easily satisfied.
:D Confession: I really liked the Xenosaga series :O -

Re:What about Miro?
Seconded, thirded and fourthed! http://www.getmiro.com/ I waste hours at a time catching up on the shows with Miro. I have all the Revision 3 stuff like Diggnation, Webdrifter. Totally Rad Show etc.. and quite a few more. This is the real future of TV. Oh, and http://www.purepwnage.com/ is the most awesome of all

Pure Pwnage
Don't know if anyone mentioned this in the comments (and I'm not about to read through the 198 that are posted at the time of this writing) but Pure Pwnage is an EXCELLENT show. Very fun and imaginative stuff started by a couple of guys in their spare time.
The more recent episodes (i.e. Season 2) don't have quite the same "documentary" feel, but they are still highly entertaining. This is one of the ones that you have to watch from the very beginning though. http://www.purepwnage.com/ you can watch and download all of their episodes straight from their website. -
Re:plenty of people come in that way, too
Bah, don't need security? My friend and I drove up to Toronto (From the NYC area) to visit some family he has up there (And also to see the http://www.purepwnage.com/ premiere). We got stuck in some traffic on the highway, and hit the border crossing near Niagra Falls at around 1am. So we presented our valid New York State drivers licenses, expecting for a quick pass-through so we could get to his uncle's house and get some much-needed sleep...
We were taken out of my friend's car, searched, our belongings searched, his car thoroughly searched... Hell, they even made him turn on his laptop (I left mine home) so they could spend fifteen minutes checking to make sure it didn't have any illegal porn. It took five border cops a half hour to make sure a couple of computer geeks were ok, and we were just going up there for a couple days.
On the way back, we made sure to time our journey so we'd hit the border mid-day. The border cop took a quick glance at our licenses and waved us through with a "Welcome back".
So don't assume it's just our guys who are assholes. -
Re:Marketing Hype Vs Waggle
While an analog stick will NEVER be a replacement for a keyboard/mouse combo, all it takes is a little bit of use...after playing through only a couple of FPS with a controller, I found that I got used to it to the point where I feel comfortable picking up a controller and just playing. Granted, as I said, there really is no replacement for a keyboard and mouse, but it doesn't take long to get used to using the controller.
In some ways, I prefer the controller for games like Rainbow Six: Vegas and Bioshock...even with as well as I type and with how long I have played games on the PC, I sitll find it more conveinent to have all the controls right at my fingertips...I don't have to worry about having my hand in the wrong position and hitting a key I don't mean to hit. Bioshock's 360 controls are very well laid out, and it takes only a couple minutes for the scheme to feel entirely natural.
Blasphemy, some might say...but it's simply a different type of Micro...it's just a different skillset that is required. Not to mention if you play FPS on a console, you will find (or at least I did) that my keyboard/mouse accuracy actually increased since I got used to something that wasn't quite as accurate. -
Re:Media's reluctance
Why yes, because the effects of gaming can be clearly seen from Pure Pwnage.

Re:Kills the moodBut they are all played by guys. The real surprise is when it turns out to be an actual female. It used to be that way, but these days with the influx of newbies, most players don't seem to realise that most female characters are played by males. It's amazing how many players start hitting on my gf's female blood elf character within 2 minutes of meeting her (she's always helping lowbies find the flight master or set their hearthstones or whatever) - surely her typing can't be that feminine? >.> I've always played male characters as my 'serious' alts but this one time I rolled a female night elf priest (have you seen male night elves? bletch!) and ended up with a male nelf druid following me around 'helping' me. ><
On the main topic, though - why does it matter if it's an 11-year-old kid, a 42-year-old mother of three, a college drop out, or an IT worker on the other end of that mage? If he or she is courteous, skilled, and knowledgeable then s/he deserves respect regardless of any other factor. That's where online games, and indeed the internet in general, are great - they let you meet the person without prejudice based on appearance, age, gender, or any other factor (except literacy, I guess... :) Why should it matter if that person is currently living in the body of an 11yo boy or a grey-whiskered tabletop RPGer? As you hint at, it struck me immediately that the only problem here is the submitter's pride. He thinks Voice Chat killed the mood; what killed the mood was him realizing he was having his ass handed to him on a golded platter for hours straight over and over by an 11 year old. He didn't like feeling like a noob. Pure pwnage on the 11 year old's part.
Maybe he just needs to work on his uber micro. ;)
In contrast to the submitter's perspective, I found voice chat to be a godsend in WoW when I still played it. Without it you lose the human element of the game, and you forget the noob on the other end (this was other people sometimes, but also myself many times over) is still human. This is only a bad thing. Text conversations fall to hissy fits much faster than they do when you're talking with someone. -
Re:Hey I know what day it is!
No. Bill is right.
Here's proof. A very serious and gut-wrenching documentary of the life of a typical young gamer.
Episode 2 is especially illuminating.

It's a tough life being a pro gamer. Pro gamers like to think a lot, right? I mean I think about all the n00bs in the world, and liek how many have I pwned?

Re:And this is news?
Uhm, you say the DS didn't got any titles? Sure as I said in another reply I don't care that much about games like Wario ware and Yoshi touch&go which is more or less technical demos, and sure we'll se a bunch of those on the Wii (for instance Wii sports which seems decent, and some game where you navigate a "body" thru a maze saw in pure pwnage.), but I've hopes that we'll see some real games once the developers get the console. In any case have you compared the DS titles to the PSP ones? On the game forum I browse something like 90+% of the members says the PSP got no nice games at all and the DS get everything. So are the DS games really that bad? I've even seen a guy saying he haven't touched his Xbox360 for the last two weeks since he got his DS.

Re:Makes Sense
... and as a result, World of Warcraft screenshot addicts the world over mourn this day. Remember, World of Warcraft is a feeling. (Grab episodes 6 and 7 if you haven't seen the full thing.)

Re:Newspeak
It's appropriate that it's in Amsterdam - they know all about addiction there. And is it just a coincidence that teh_pwnerer himself was there on the 14th?

Verification
Wikipedia's process for weeding out bad articles and information could use some work. The main problem I have is that pages are, by default, considered authoritative. Only when someone comes along and finds inaccuracies or disagrees is anything questioned. To compound the problem, the mechanisms for removing bad information or articles are themselves subject to abuse and ignorance. As an example, the article for the web "sitcom" Pure Pwnage was recently put on the chopping block, despite the fact that it has been around for over two years and will probably reach a tier of popularity similar to something like Red vs. Blue. I believe part of the complaint was that the article contained "fancruft", yet instead of trying to remedy the situation, someone unfamiliar with the subject matter decided they knew what was best and started yelling "delete!".

Pure Pwnage pwns myEmoSpaceThe guys at Pure Pwnage did a take on this in their latest episode - about how mySpace is a glorified "pay attention to me" posting board for lots o' emo kids out there. The main character Googles for "attention whore", hits "I'm Feeling Lucky," and guess where he lands?
:)While there may be a couple of iotas of redeeming value at mySpace (connecting you with people you haven't seen/talked with in a while, and actually *wanted* to talk with again, etc.) the whole site feels like a high school popularity contest all over again.

Re:Psh, weaklings
This terrifying addiction has been well-documented, in the hard-hitting online drama series Pure Pwnage. http://www.purepwnage.com/episodes.html (Eps 6 & 7)

Pure pwnage
http://www.purepwnage.com/ I don't know if other people know about it, but this is pretty good stuff, and fairly relavent to the topic. It's a web distributed show (but they only put a new one out about once every 3 months) that follows the misadventures of "The Ownerer", a l33t gamer who pwns n00bs. It's worth a look, if nothing else for a good laugh.

Face Off
I want to see a face-off between him and fps_doug and teh_ownerer from http://www.purepwnage.com/.

Re:Good wee hours of the morn' topic
I prefer FPS Doug from Pure Pwnage. And yes I HAVE played with people like him. They may not be the norm, but they are certainly more interesting (and potentially fun or annoying) then the zombied out players.

WOW addiction is covered in a very entertaining way in the latest 2 episodes of the Net show

I love the scene where he's trying to explain to the psychiatrist that he hasn't had food for days because "priest's don't need to eat, and you know, typically my regen is so high cus of my high spirit that I'm basically always full anyways" -
Re:yea
red vs blue is pretty boring actually.
you want funny? the live action pure pwnage is a scream. -

I actually now here the voice of FPS doug, from http://www.purepwnage.com/ Episode 3 - FPS Doug, going "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" whenever I hear headshot now.

Re:sigh...
I guess it's time to switch to china inf, then.
But, china inf is for n00bs. -
PC Gaming
PC gaming will always be around. EQII WoW Etc are just too complex to be played on a console with the limited number of buttons on the controller. Unless you want to memorize 40 different button combinations on your console controller. And without PC gaming there will be no Uber Micro and we all know we can not live without uber micro.

For proof that 'lol' can be used as an actual word - check out Teh Pwnerer:

Excellent
Now I can show Pure Pwnage to my parents and they will understand it perfectly. However, they may be concerned that teh_pwnerer is "involved in the theft of intellectual property, particularly licensed software" due to his use of expressions like "pwn."
