Grand Theft Android? I might buy that.

Re:stop and RTFA first
It appears poorly phrased, and therefore open to (mis)interpretation, but I believe that the ban hammer comes out only if Rockstar permits them to jump back into the non-cheater pool, and are found cheating in the non-cheater pool a second time.
In the event we decide to absolve any of these cheaters for their past transgressions they may re-enter play with the general public, however a second offense will result in their indefinite banishment.

Interactive Storytelling vs. Gaming
It sounds like your tastes are just changing to more serious and thoughtful titles. You'd rather play an interactive story instead of a press-the-button-when-the-flashy-thing-blinks-game. Good thing for you is, it's right in the middle of a resurgence.
The relative success of Heavy Rain and Telltale's success with reviving the adventure game formula is bearing some really awesome fruit. Check out LA Noire by Rockstar - I think it'll be right up your alley. http://www.rockstargames.com/lanoire/agegate/ref/?redirect=
Also I hear great things about Red Dead Redemption and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Both are purported to have great stories to go with gameplay that's not quite so frantic.

This is how much they care..Asked & Answered - Re: Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, Rockstar San Diego and More
As for the stories spreading around the internet, yes we have noticed them. Unfortunately, this is a case of people taking the opinions of a few anonymous posters on message boards as fact. No business is ever perfect, but Rockstar Games is a tight knit team made up of around 900 supremely talented and motivated professionals, many of whom have worked here for a very long time. We’re saddened if any former members of any studio did not find their time here enjoyable or creatively fulfilling and wish them well with finding an environment more suitable to their temperaments and needs, but the vast majority of our company are focused solely on delivering cutting edge interactive entertainment. We’ve always cared passionately about the people working here, and have always tried to maintain a supportive creative environment. There is simply no way Rockstar could continue to produce such large scale, high quality games without this.
..what? overtime in the gaming industry? oh, not us, it would be impossible to produce games like thatIf you think Rockstar management is honest I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Re:I love video game music... sometimes
If replying to your own post is bad form, replying to it twice must be, I dunno... punishable by death. I'm an arse because I forgot to mention that you can get the original source of the music from GTA 1 along with the *entire game* (as well as Wild Metal and GTA2) as a free download from Rockstar Classic. Kudos to them.
I'll shut up now.

Re:Oh this is going to be fun.
I agree. I think it was for HL1 that I also tried making some maps and obvious first ideas were own home, school, friends places and other familiar stuff. It was fun seeing those familiar places in the games.
And speaking of level editors, I think Max Payne's level editor has been one of the best ones. It was nice to use, you could do lots of things easily (like moving platforms activated by triggers) and still powerful. After I went from MaxED to Hammer (or whatever the usual Quake level editor is called), it really felt like going back.

Re:VAC
Oh IDK, how about LA.

Umm...
A modern top-down Grand Theft Auto would be nice. I remember playing GTA2 long after GTA3 was released. It's available for free now at http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/?id=3. And a decent quake would be nice too.
:) That Quake Live thing is the worst thing that has "Quake" on it. It sucks at pretty much everything. -
Re:Finally?
I've been playing the original Grand Theft Auto in VirtualBox recently. GTA2 couldn't recognise a suitable graphics card in 2.2.4 with WinXP, but I still got some old-school car theft and carnage on my Linux box
:) -
Re:Meh
Damn, man.. Yet another patch and yet again it manages to screw something up?! We're either talking some major bad luck or an assinine QC.
Nah, it's just stupid submitters and ignorant editors all over again - the "issue" that's linked in the summary was actually caused by the first patch and is now fixed in the second one:
LOOK / SPIN / STUCK KEY ISSUES
The issue has been fixed in the latest Title Update 1.0.2.0. However, with Title Update 1.0.1.0, some users are experiencing a Look/Spin/"Stuck Key" issue that interferes with user input.

The Original GTA
The original GTA is going free on Rockstar's website. It's up to you if you think it's suitable for 14-16 year olds (when it came out it was an 18, but then again, that was a decade ago, attitudes change)

Valuable Life Skills
Don't think of just entertainment, choose games that will teach the children valuable life skills. For example:
Teach them to Rule the World: Freeciv
Teach them the value of running over hookers: GTA 1&2
Teach them the awesomeness of fighting robots: One Must Fall 2097
Teach them to conquer the world in a different way: C&C Red Alert 3
And finally, teach them to conquer the world of worms (you never know): Wormux -
Yes, Elbot is dumb
I asked some basic business questions, like "What is your business plan?" and "Is your company profitable?", and got canned, clueless answers, no better than Eliza. "What magazines do you read?" yielded "You are probably on TV much of the time. Well, I'm in the Internet!". "Do you have life insurance?" (there's apparently a plan to build an automated insurance sales rep) yielded "What a lovely verb have is."
I can't even find a subject area in which the thing sounds like it has a clue. Sports? This is a German system, so I tried "What is the best soccer team in Europe?", which yielded "The best? Aren't they all equal in the end?" D'oh. Celebrities? "What do you think of Franka Potente?" (a leading German actress) yielded "The way to a robot's heart is through careful use of physical strength. Don't you agree?". After that, I tried "What do you think of Big Dog?", and got "But I wouldn't say that any dog could be big."
As far as I can tell, the thing is totally stateless; it doesn't seem to use anything other than the current question as input. Nor does it even try to guide the conversation into an area about which it has information.
I'm so not impressed.
For a better chatterbot, try the GTA IV's web site. Go to "Goods and Services", then "Goldberg, Ligner, and Shyster", then "Legal advice".

Re:Scraping the bottom of the barrel.
The movie came out in 1984. It's the end of 2007 now. Are they hurting that badly for material?
The Warriors came out in 1979 and the game in 2005 yet is one of the best film tie-ins I've ever seen, expanding the story and letting you play through the movie.
An interesting addendum to this. The movie The Warriors was based on a book written by Sol Yurick in 1965. Who himself based it on a book that is required reading for classical Greek students and West Point Cadets called the Anabasis by the Greek writer and soldier Xenophon that details his rise to leadership within a small mercenary army that got stuck deep in Persian territory and had to fight their way back home--Although I'm pretty sure he stole the idea from Herodotus.

I guess a good game is a good game, maybe when they aren't being rushed out to coincide with the movie's release, not to mention having a cult following.

Some aggregating sites
Home of the Underdogs has quite a few games that are either freeware or are now free, like Freespace 2.
Liberated Games has many now free games that were once commerical offerings.
Rockstar has also made GTA2 and 2 other games free. -
ive already done the work for you
I just moved to a new city - from Stockholm, Sweden to Phoenix, Arizona, so Ive had a lot of free time on my hands and much of that has gone to looking for good, free games. I havent limited this to only flash, obviously. Beggars cant be choosers.
But here are some I found that were very addicting!
(flash)
Motherload
http://www.miniclip.com/games/motherload/en/
A game where youre a miner on a mars colony. Deeper you go, the more dangerous, but the more valuable the gems. Upgrades and planning ahead are really important. Actually takes the better part of the day to beat, and it incorporates a save function.
(flash)
Aqua Energizer
http://www.miniclip.com/games/aqua-energizer/en/
Really addicting puzzle/maze game.
I dont like straying from the subject, but usually we are limited to buggy beta-type games when the pricetag is $0.
It may be interesting for a lot of people to know that Rockstar has released Grand Theft Auto (1) to the public, free of charge
http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ (download link). The good people at Virgin Interactive have also released Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn to the public, also free of charge: http://megagames.com/news/html/freegames/commandandconquertiberiandawn.shtml (download link).
These are some great classic titles that are all worth being played again! -
Re:so...
same game, new music, better graphics.
For comparison purposes, Rockstar is distributing GTA1 and 2 for free (well, for the cost of your name, email, and mailing address) at http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/gta.html/. -
angry at who? AO violence targeted to minors?
So you are saying if "Disney" had a "Mick-Box" gaming system, you would be "pissed off" that they didn't port an XXX-rated game to their family-aimed gaming system?
Which proprietary gaming system manufacturers do you feel should be forced to carry titles that they don't wish to carry?
They are "Proprietary Platforms" (PPs) -- first you buy their platform, then, you and publishers have to abide by the hardware company's 'rules'. The game publisher, "Take-Two Interactive Software"studio still has the the option to release it for the PC. However, it appears they were only planning to release for the PPs (PS2, PSP, Wii) on their Release Date, july 10, as the PC platform isn't mentioned on their website in their list of available platforms.
So kick the publisher, maybe, for not releasing on the PC? At least then you would be free to buy it. Seems weird to not release to the PC-market where "% owners over 18 (or 21)" would be greater than "% owners over 18 (or 21)" for game consoles. Statistically. Seems like their age-group focus was for "17 and under". It's one thing to restrict adult-violence games to adults, but quite another to target adult-violence games to the "17 and under" market.
This isn't about "adult's rights", it's about restricting adult content to adults while Take-Two and Rockstar were marketing adult content to minors, from whom they expected the highest payback.
So who do we be "pissed-off" at here? The ratings board? It sounds like they may have given an accurate rating. Should it be the "PP's" for being family-image conscious - maybe, but their customers give that power to them. Or do you blame the game's producer and creators who were marketing "adult-only violence" to minors? -
Re:In that case...
Looks like you can get all Rockstar games directly from them.

Re:The good ol' daysThe reason why there are 100 different versions of Rainbow Six? Maybe because that's what people want. There's a good reason we never see sequels to Pong or Galaga or Frogger. No Pong Sequels?
There were probably more Galaga knock-offs than sequels to any modern game, and I think 3 Frogger titles plus countless knockoffs.
People "want" the 74th version of Rainbox Six because no one has invented better yet. Once someone does, the next generation will be cluelessly whining about "there's a good reason there were no sequels to Rainbow Six".
And, yes, all the (recent) Final Fantasy games are basically the same: a movie where you have to work to unlock each scene, plus chocobos when you get tired of that for a while. Different movies, but same game. -
Decent mirror for the trailer

Re:Awesome!
Sadly, the game is ten months away. Rockstar should thank Mr. Thompson for starting the hype machine so early.
-
Re:Nice
If you want to play the games on your computer, Grand Theft Auto I and II are available for free on Rockstar's website. I bought Grand Theft Auto III for $10 at Walmart over a year ago. It's probably still available.
$10's much better for three games. -
Re:Rated M
No, it has nothing to do with how much money the parents are. They are DEAD. Didn't you RTFA? He shot and killed his father and step mother.
Phew... thank God... I hear they use some sort of programming to raise mindless killers as part of some sort of conspiracy....

Re:The only way...
I have to disagree. I find this game to be extremely disturbing.

Mod parent up!
Their target demographic is nerds, so why do they create a game about our oldest enemy?
Mod parent up. please. He didn't know better, and still, I applaud his immediate courage to stand up and defend our ranks.
In the meantime, I can answer your question: because they're working on a crossover sequel, Bully 2/Postal 3: Siege over Columbine.
Uh... right
Anyway, from the website's overview:
"The Rockstar tradition of groundbreaking, original gameplay and humorous tongue-in-cheek storytelling invades an entirely new setting: the schoolyard.
As a mischievous schoolboy, you'll stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the worst school around, Bullworth Academy - a corrupt and crumbling prep school with an uptight facade.
The story follows Jimmy Hopkins, a teenager who's been expelled from every school he's ever attended. Left to fend for himself after his mother abandons him at Bullworth to go on her fifth honeymoon, Jimmy has a whole year at Bullworth ahead of him, working his way up the social ladder of this demented institution of supposed learning, standing up for what he thinks is right and taking on the liars, cheats and snobs who are the most popular members of the student body and faculty. If Jimmy can survive the school year and outsmart his rivals, he could rule the school.
Ready yourself for a hilarious return to campus living with Bully, the outrageously funny debut title from Rockstar Vancouver, available exclusively for PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system this October."
This actually looks like a fun game. I'd play it.

Re:The New Hotness
Yep! And even Rockstar Games have admitted to this by making their new Table Tennis game.
:P I just can't see why people won't just do the real thing instead of play a game... Actually, this game could be quite cool on the Wii. -
Re:New Ideas
Hmm, being able to steal a tank and drive around running over the enemy and shooting the main cannon might actually be kind of fun...
You might want to try this game, then ;-) -
Bully?
A difficult console transition, FTC investigation, re-rating of GTA: San Andreas and more have put Rockstar and Take-Two in an unenviable position. We've received word that in addition to people who left because of studio closures, even more either fled or quit. Are Rockstar employees jumping ship or is this just a result of cost-cutting at Take-Two?
Maybe, or Rockstar was actually populated with conscientious people and most people didn't know it.
The development of Bully in which you play a schoolyard thug who tortures fellow classmates for fun might just have been the breaking point for some of Rockstars talent. It's time to move on when you're asked by your boss to do work that is morally contrary to your beliefs...I think a number of Rockstar's best and brightest did just that.
The GTA series was sylish and artistic, 'Bully' is irresponsible and sadistic. -

GTA 2 introduced just as much to the series as Vice City does.

Re:yeah sure, gameplay over graphics
Sometimes speech in a game is very nice and fits well. On the DS, though... there are some things that never should speak. I like to compare two of my favorite series that have taked different approaches to speech, game play and other things; Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario. If you ever played Sonic Adventure, you'd probably think twice about having Mario speak beyond a couple 'yahoos.'
Speech needs to be applied with thoughts about other things besides just how real it is. Like Half-Life 2. Would it really be better if Gordon Freeman could reply or give you a list of things to reply with? Does he really need his hands to show up on the car wheel? I don't think so.
I will say that I am both a audiophile and a videophile. I will own UT2K7 and the physics card to make it better. But, I also must have gameplay. I never bought the expansion to Doom 3 because monsters in closets were not fun. I will buy the Wii and Sonic Wild Fire but not the PS3 and Sonic the Hedgehog (the physics one) because as much as I'd love to see HD Eggman and Havok based enemies die, I can already see Wild Fire will be more fun and more like the original.
Just for the record, I still like playing pong. I have no interest in http://www.rockstargames.com/tabletennisTable Tennis -
Maybe a good thing
There are many movies showing the horror of war. Maybe a videogame to denounce such a tragedy and to disgust people would be good. Make something in the lines of Manhunt, which will make people sick of violence and it may not be all bad.
