Re:No way..
First of all the article says its a rumour (and also states it will make it to PC anyways). Second: MS has interests in the PC market...if people need to upgrade or buy a new PC then they may just purchase a copy of XP too. Also to note: Doom 3 technology has already be leased to make develop other games: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/25891/

Slashdot Effect in Action
Though I don't know if the server managed to go down, it's fun to look at the Server Load Page to see just how much extra load a link at Slashdot can cause to a page that already gets a lot of traffic.
-
OT: Slashdot effect shown on shacknews.com
If you're interested in what the Slashdot effect looks like for a relatively small story, look here: http://www.shacknews.com/docs/amd.x BTW, that spike at 4am is the nightly backup. The webserver load jumped, but the database server was fine since it is run through FastCGI

Why?

Nope ...
If you want the best gaming site, complete with reviews about past, present games and reports of future games, go to sCaRy's Shugashack, err I mean, Shacknews. It gets you chicks!
-
First News!
Well, if this isn't late breaking news, I don't know what is!
Isn't online news supposed to be really fresh? This is a week old.
-
Re:Who cares?
If you're looking for general interest sites, a few to check out would be: Shacknews -- www.shacknews.com and Blue's News -- www.bluesnews.com and maybe even the Adrenaline Vault -- www.avault.com and Thresh's FiringSquad -- www.firingsquad.com. While these sites aren't perfect, they aren't nearly as bad as Gamespy and Gamespot.
Better yet are actual fan sites for games you're interested in. A good way to find some is to check the game's official page for a list of fan sites or simply talk to other players. To show you what happens when real gamers put together web sites...
Warcraft III: (Excellent replays)
www.theinclan.com
Counter-Strike: (Replays and configs)
www.sogamed.com
Quake: (News)
www.quake3stuff.com -
On a related note...
Be sure to check out the Shacknews GOTY awards.
I like this list better because it was created via poll results and not just editor opinions. -
Thank God for MiyamotoOn Shacknews, they have a poll for PC game of the year. This is the only year where I haven't truly been interested in any of the games on there. Of the games that I did have the option to vote for, I didn't think they were deserving of a title such as GOTY.
For the first time in my life, I had no idea what a great game for the PC was, for the past 12 months of my life.
That's not to say I haven't been gaming it up. I have all of the newest Nintendo first party titles. Miyamoto is a breath of fresh air. He may not subscribe to the same gameplay as the rest of the designers, but his games which show obvious influence are amazing works, and help me brave this storm of realism, violent and sometimes team-based games inspired by Counterstrike and GTA3.
I do think it's ironic that the major trend in game development is to innovate by moving away from Miyamoto's style. We have a lot of innovation, but it's all heading in the same direction!

Re:Nethack? Yup.
Yes they do.
Although, I'm a bit disappointed that they don't have Angband. -
Look at the screenshots..In certain shots it looks uncannily like MGS - complete with radar. Check this out..
Is that Snake climbing down a ladder?
You know, if it just had two equipment slots on the right that you'd change with the console buttons... oh wait, it has those.
I guess all it needs is an alert mode on the radar
;) -
If you wonder if Starcraft if 3D can be cool....
Check this out.
I only have one thing to say : Holy mother of god, I want this game! -

There are more important things than AI
Sure, this might be a good sign for general programming evolution, but it didn't prevent the first Black & White from fizzling due to virtually zero replay value and plenty of bugs. PC Gamer gave it an Editor's Choice back in about May 2001, but that was mere weeks after the game was released; months later, player opinion of the game plunged. Black & White, Lionhead, and Peter Molyneux became the butt of many jokes. It wasn't like Id Software's games, where a great engine was held back by a vacuous storyline. The engine was buggy, the principle was weak, and even the AI had problems. People asked themselves whether the developers at Lionhead had played their own game through to the end. Personally, I've learned my lesson after purchasing stinkers like Red Faction purely on the speculations spewed out by "gaming sites", only to find out that the game wasn't worth 1/4th its release MSRP. And it seems that the good games are taking forever to develop since the developers are actually playtesting them and making sure they don't mess up during development. There's going to be a long stretch of time before the good games get released, while the discount devhouses pump out half-developed games by the truckload.

mirrors
the mirrors at
shacknews are quite good, and not overloaded.
Also, instead of using Gamespy Arcade to find servers to play on, plain old Gamespy works better and isn't full of ads in your face. Unfortunately the protocol is closed ("powered by gamespy") or something so All Seeing Eye doesn't work with it. -
Re:Now I've seen it all
/me waits to get flamed by crt and Walla now
Let them flame, you did the right thing. Quakespy was awesome. Early Gamespy's were good. Hate to flame them but they deserve it.
Then, through some sort of Realplayer-esque type move, it turned to crapware. Around the same time Planet* multiplied to 5 billion useless clones - now it's top flash banner, bottom ani gif, and 2 skyscraper flashes framing a 10x10 area of content. Gamespy Arcade, why? Meanwhile, Radiospy, which was actually cool, is "off the air". Get my GamespyID to download a patch "exclusively hosted" by Fileplanet? Go fuck yourselves.
Gamespy now infects games all over the place, and it really sucks. NWN's ingame server is "powered by Gamespy", and let me tell you, it's a UI nightmare.
I want the old Planetquake back - and before someone gives me the sob story on how hard it is to make it on the net/we got hosed by advertisers/bandwidth is expensive blah blah, Steve's been doing it without selling his soul, and building a kickass gaming community - and when he got in trouble, his users paid off a substantial amount of bills. Keep selling out users Gamespy, I won't miss you. -
What will nVidia doFirstly here is a mirror and another mirror
From reading various bits of info on the web, there seem to be four different code paths. An nVidia codepath, an ATI codepath, a default codepath, and now the OpenGL2.0 codepath.
So Matrox and 3DLabs pretty much have to put out OpenGL2.0 drivers to run Doom3 or they can implement nVidia/ATI OpenGL1.3 extensions. But the interesting case is the nVidia codepath.
The Geforce3/4 has 4 texture units. The Radeon8500 has 6 texture units. You would have to assume that the next line of nVidia cards would have more texture units. To take advantage of the extra texture units, it would seem that nVidia would have to write OpenGL2.0 drivers. This is definitely a good thing.

Shackstore
You might want to try out Shacknews's new parts store, Shackstore
They have really really cheap prices, and you can order every part separately, with good descriptions and such.
I work at an ISP, and build tons of systems. I get all my parts from Netlink and they have by far the biggest, most detailed database of parts for order (us and Canadian pricing) on the web. Give them a shot for wicked pricing as well.
Hope that helps someone out. -

Booth Babes
Everyone just wants to drool over the booth babes anyways, myself included. So here they are!

In other video game news...
Volition released the full source code for FreeSpace 2.
Very cool stuff. They still claim copyright -- they haven't GPLed it or anything -- but as far as I can tell it's free for noncommercial fan projects and such.
All source code herein is the property of Volition, Inc. You may not sell
or otherwise commercially exploit the source or things you created based on the
source.
Can't wait to mess around with this beast (four megs worth of code). -

even if you get it from a "more legitimate" source, it will still be an .exe file.

Coming up next: Pay for play
This is obviously a ploy aimed squarely at turning the online Half-life community into a pay-for-play revenue stream, at least over the long haul. The 'shack article alludes slightly to this, although Gabe Newell makes it sound a little more palatable, and wants to be our friend. He promises not to charge us twice for the same product. All who believe him, raise your hand.
While the features mentioned (automatic patches, etc.) are very cool, they're also merely the bullet points needed to sell the software to developers and clients.
Gamers are likely eager to jump on the technology if they can get the latest patches and maps without having to take an active role in the proces by going out and downloading them proactively.
Developers are likely to use it because then they don't have to worry about producing media, documentation, or those other annoying things that soften the pain of paying $50 a pop to most gamers.
Valve wins 2 ways: First, they can move all of the userbase over to a subscription model and start making little hats out of money. Second, they can get a piece of each sale from other developers' work that hits their content distribution system, and make little money shirts to match the hats.
Think about it. Half-Life came out 5 years ago. A lot of us have plunked down our $50 and have been playing away happily ever since at Counterstrike, DOD, Existence, and many other wonderful mods without giving Valve a penny.
Now, the case can easily be made that Valve DESERVES more cash. They've continued to pump money into the Half-life community, making Counterstrike into a commercial product, releasing the classic quake and team fortress classic mods, releasing patches and feature upgrades these many years, and constantly improving the product.
This works fine while your game is in the top seller lists through constant re-release. It breaks down when you hit market saturation. Who does Valve turn to when Half-Life isn't in the top 20 anymore, and Team Fortress II is no longer even a twinkle in Gabe Newell's eye?
It turns to you, the purchaser of the original product, who is brazenly continuing to enjoy the it long after anyone thought you would still pay attention to it. Your brazen audacity shown by not becoming a consistent revenue stream will be corrected once and for all!
In fact, if you buy a game over Steam, who's to say that the content provider can't just turn it off a few years down the road when the sequel's released? With constant enforcement of new patch downloads, what happens to purists who might enjoy the gameplay of an earlier revision? What if I want to install a custom hack such as a Tribes 2 HUD or build my own decal in Half-Life, only to have these changes constantly overwritten by the autoupdater?
Control over how I can execute my software should be left in my hands, not in the hands of a subscription service or remote authentication server. The current system isn't broken, and steam doesn't really address any significant problems except Valve's diminishing bottom line. -
