Re:Eeeeeyyyyyyy, Azureus!
uTorrent does this as well (when you have a torrent selected, in the lower pane, select the "file" view, and right-click on any file), is smaller, lighter, easier on system resources, and has no additional dependancies.
I don't understand why people use Azureus on Windows anymore, uTorrent is far superior to it. Someone should make a uTorrent clone for Linux so we can escape this plauge they call Azureus.

Re:Useless functionality..
Microsoft *has* changed Windows Update in Vista so that it is no longer a web application. Here, I took a screenshot of this for you.
Just because it doesn't run in a regular IE window, doesn't mean it isn't a web application that's running in IE. Here, take a look at these:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/shared/images/tandb/avant_ 546x437.jpg
http://www.informanews.net/imagenews/avant-browser .jpg
http://www.softpedia.com/screenshots/Avant-Browser _2.png
Do any of those look like Internet Explorer? No? That's because they're not. They're screenshots of Avant, which uses the IE engine to render HTML!!
That Vista update screen could look just the same way, but be an HTML page rendered by IE. -

First impressions are important. Well how software looks matters to me anyway.

Personally I use Symantec AntiVirus 'Corporate' 9 (legit of course), which doesn't seem to suck up too many resources and doesn't look like most Norton crap (and you wouldn't expect it to, since it came out before Norton bought out Symantec). -

A few random Google OS links...Information regarding the OS is sketchy (read: rumours), so here's some (non-authorative) links:
- What Wold Microsoft Do (Editor's Blog)
- A Google OS by 2010 (Article)
- GooOS (Blog)
- The new 'G' o/s (Article)
I'm not so sure about the name 'GooOS' that people are chosing to use. The domain GOOOS.COM is registerd to whoisprivacyprotect.com (a subsidiary of Enom), but the CC domains like gooos.co.uk are not yet registered (which seems like a bit of a mistake if thats the name google intend (read:speculation) to use.) -

Then it could be that Dell feels the Blu-Ray format is more commercially viable, as it's more likely to be accepted by content producers as 'secure':
"The only difference being that Blu Ray is adding another two supplementary security elements: ROM Mark and BD+. ROM Mark is a sort of stamp, invisible to the consumer, which can be embedded using special equipment available only to licensed Blu-Ray disc producers. Obviously, these discs will only be compatible with Blu-Ray equipments." (link)
With regards to the posted article, I don't see why Dell would be basing decisions on anything other than what's best for Dell (i.e., instead of some non-expressed dislike for Microsoft). -

Fair enough - but, here goes, if my words are not enough.
(Hey, it's just a website with techniques for making your Windows NT-based OS personal computer system more secure is all... if anything, it's a site to keep you from getting messed up online!)
Still, if my words aren't good enough, how about those of others?
Here, try these on for size as to the estimation of how the tips/tricks/techniques in them work:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/AP K-Internet-and-NTkXP-Speedup-Guides.shtml
(The link above is links to the articles in single .mht IE archived format & rated well there, like 4.2 of 5 by some people that rated what is on my init. URL, but instead in single file downloadable format).
http://www.osnn.net/forum/showpost.php?s=e6ccbc8bd f7a67e197b37a430d280ac7&p=288210&postcount=18
(That link is someone who apparently has used them & also noted they give techniques for stopping the RPC hole that Windows NT-based OS had recently as well... without patching the OS no less!)
APK
P.S.=> If what I wrote isn't good enough, there's the words of others regarding the content for better security of a Windows NT-based OS like 2000/XP/Server 2003, rating the content of the website URL I put up, & very well I might add... apk -

Re:And.... people won't care
Ah, I think they'll give it some thought if it's implemented properly. What strikes me as very nice is that some software depots out there already have such stuff in place and they don't make such a big fuss, it's just part of normal service.
Take Softpedia for instance, and check out their page for Buddy Spy. Notice the "100% adware, spyware free" banner on the left side, as well as the "Report spyware" link (on right, same level as program name).
It's probably nothing fancy, just a peer and user review system, overviewed by Softpedia admins. Just like the the rating system. Simple and not pretentious, but "It Works Now(tm)". -

Case in point - my little sister (hands off "sexy rexy"), 3-5 gaim conversations, a couple of browser windows, the telephone, "hey did you do your homework/ left book in the locker" " be ovr 10min" I know you can handle this. --* so how many phone conversations, missed assignments, early mornings and teachers that you've had a crush on ran through your head? I know you didn't think about my sister! *--

Re:All I Want for Christmas...
Get a Pioneer DV-470 (or 525 if you need SACD and WMA support). It can play DivX files too (and show your JPEG photos). And after that, get a firmware update from
http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php?option=com_webl inks&catid=70&Itemid=4
And you can do all that you want.
(The region-free part is actually in the standard firmware, you just need to activate it with some sort of IR signal (the guy who sold me one did it with a Palm Vx). But the Mtz firmware does all that and more, so just use it) -
System RequirementsThe posted requirements from here list the following requirements:
In an interview for StrategyInformer, a 2K Games representative stated that the minimum requirements will be: 1GHz processor, 256MB of RAM and a video card with T&L support.
In this version will there be methods of turning off the new and fabulous looking, but inevitably cpu/gpu killer graphics and animations so that mere mortals can play this on their current PC?
The recommended requirements are: Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB RAM and a video card with performances as good as ATI's Radeon 9800. -
where is the Samsung SDD, then??
Around the end of May, there were several sites

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Samsung-is-betting- on-Flash-disk-drives-2222.shtml
reporting that Samsung would be having a 16GB flash hard disk (SDD) available around August 2005. Has anyone seen those? I know for a very good reason that I would be insterested in installing one of those in my Powerbook: the joy of silence. -
I like the prices.
They say they are price competitive with non-quantum technology.
Then they have the following prices:
- The NvIOpRAM [ATA IDE] products have the selling price of $2.50 per 1GB.
- NvIOpSRAM [144-pin SODIMM] products have the selling price of $4.50 per 1GB.
- NvIOpSRAM [200-pin SODIMM] products have the selling price of $6.00 per 1GB.
Let's see, then that 2TB drive will cost $5000, and that included 1TB of RAM will cost $6000, for a minimum notebook cost of $11,000. And that's assuming the rest of the notebook (including their miracle processor) is free. While 1TB of RAM for $6000 is a good price, 2TB of hard drive for $5000 is a bit on the steep side.
Oh, and some loony hardware enthusiasts have already shown that even some current processors can run at 7GHz.

good thing for end users? Uh...
No, this is obviously bad for end users. Consider two cases:
Case A: There are no restrictions.
As an end user, you can always (A) buy a PC and run M$/FreeBSD/Linux, (B) buy an Apple and run Mac OSX. But, without restrictions, you can also (C) buy an Apple and run M$/FreeBSD/Linux on it, or (D) buy a PC and run Mac OSX on it.
Now, Case B: Apple sets hardware restrictions.
You now cannot (D) buy a PC and run Mac OSX. There is no added benefit for you as an end user.
With that out of the way, I suppose it is Apple's decision, as it is their OS (well, their GUI), although it is a faggoty decision.
Based on how the iPod works (or doesn't work, ie can't copy songs from an iPod to a computer), one could have seen this coming from a mile away, but how possible would it be to get around this? It didn't take long for xPod to come along. Any chance of a cracked Mac OS X anytime soon? -

Re:Screenshots of build 5203
With a patch like this you can use the windows xp native skinning engine to apply themes like these for free, without sacrifycing performance, and make your XP look like Longhorn (or Mac or what you like).
You can also download a free program to change your logon screen.
What I really wanted to see were the new innovations that were supposed to be shipped with Longhorn, like the new filesystem. Sadly, some of them will be missing in order to meet the deadlines.
Cheers,

First, Linux PC's:
Lucasarts games: http://www.scummvm.org/
AGI Sierra games (Lsl1, Sq1, Sq2, Kq1-3, etc): http://sarien.sourceforge.net/

A patched uxtheme.dll and about 2 or 3 minutes at DeviantArt will clear that right up.
I agree, though. Luna and Royale look godawful. I'd love to see them recruit a better artist for some themes later on. Maybe they can make a cool Sci-Fi theme that looks like the one in Minority Report (just saw it this weekend, otherwise I'd think of a better movie/interface design). -

Re:No one cares...
In defense of AOL-Time Warner, If I were a traditional media bigwig and I had heard about upstart technology companies making billions (in investor dollars), an industry that was going to take over and destroy the traditional media, and I had no experience or knowledge of what they were talking about, I'd get a little scared and do something stupid too. AOL, on the other hand, probably knew they were lucking out and cashed the heck in.
Now, it can certainly be argued that if someone is on the board of directors of a company that is about to approve such a foolish thing they're getting paid well to know about the technology etc. But few executives actually go down to the floor of their companies anymore, and more and more are losing the pulse of what is going on. They just "don't have time" to get a clue.
CEO payoffs are rediculous. Carly was got roughly 3 million in salary last year. While in my mind a reasonable company would put this closer to 400k or less, 3 million is too high but not insane. But a 20 million payoff plus 20 million in additional benefits for running a company into the ground? That's 8 million dollars per year she was there. Giving a year's salary to help someone have time to find another job seems reasonable and just, but giving them 10 years of an already far-too-high salary for getting fired?
All of this stands in stark contrast to what they're telling the people on the front lines. Carly's 3 million dollar salary would pay for 30 great engineers. Her giant golden parachute stands in direct contrast to the treatment of the workers HP laid off. How many of them got 10 years worth of salary? Or legal, financial, career counseling, a secratary, health insurance, a 200,000k dollar per year pension (after 5 years of service)? Or even got to keep their computer?
Of course, if it was an HP computer it might not be worth keeping. But the point is that many CEO's have lost the ability to think about troop morale in any context, and certainly in the context of getting laid off. It's hard for people to hear that we need to cut corners from a person whose income is 95% disposable.
It might be worth it for a big company to put out giant per year salaries to lure great CEO's to the top slot. But so far that strategy seems to have failed miserably.
