Re:Moral Victory
If someone dumps toxic waste on my yard and I complain would you say "why don't you clean it up?"
Is wikipedia your site? No? Then there's no comparision to your yard.
If a known murderer is left to wander around and I ask the police to arrest him would you tell me to arrest him mysself?
There's no valid comparision between someone contributing to a collaborative text that the reader has to choose to access, and someone commiting murder.
If someone claims authority (the title of encyclopedia is a strong inherent claim of authority)why is it my responsiblity to correct them?
I think you read entirely too much into the word "encyclopedia". And always question authority. Heck, question everything.

More Information on Biodiesel
Premptively, let me make this very clear so we don't need to have the same discussion everytime biodiesel comes up.
First, biodiesel has a positive energy balance, to the tune of about 3.2 units out for every unit you put in. http://www.nrel.gov/docs/legosti/fy98/24089.pdf
Second, biodiesel is 78% carbon neutral with regard to greenhouse gas emissions (see previous pdf). That is because the majority of the carbon emitted when you burn a gallon of biodiesel was captured from the atmosphere when you grew the plant to make the vegetable oil. However, the methanol used to make the biodiesel (fatty acid methyl ester) is made from natural gas, at least in the US. You could make 100% renewable ethyl ester biodiesel from ethanol, or make methanol from landfill recovery biogas, but we don't currently.
Third, soy and corn oil are crummy crops to make biodiesel from. But that's where the lobbying money is right now. Other plants have much higher yields.
http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_yield.html
Forth, no, it isn't a question of "food or fuel"? We can do both! Whenever you hear that argument ask yourself whether the person is well meaning but misinformed, or as been happening recently, is part of astroturf campaign to preserve the status quo of the petroleum economy.
Want to try making some biodiesel yourself?

Re:Open Document Format
No offence, but your comment reminded me of this Dilbert strip.
:)
Having said that, someone could write a plugin to display OpenDocument documents, just like any other browser plugin, although I would get annoyed that every time I clicked on a link to an OpenDocument file, I had to wait for OpenOffice.org to load... -

$SYS$ CAMO T-SHIRT
I'm telling you, make light of it all by buying the camouflage $sys$ tee! Someone, send a complimentary one to DVD Jon, and one to Sony
;-) -
Re:Pretty $sys$ pictures lol
and someone else has put together t-shirts with pretty "pictures" on them, making this an even worse day for Sony. The shirts feature a large "$SYS$" followed by... You guessed it... "Invisibility Courtesy Sony Corp."!!
Yes, and the words are lettered in camouflage! That's half the joke! -
Pretty $sys$ pictures lol
Dan has even put together some pretty pictures of the breadth of the infection

Ha Ha, indeed! The inevitable Tees!
Who's to say that Nelson isn't laughing about his new $sys$ camo t-shirt?

Unnecessary bandwagonmanship
Tagging spaces (also called 'folksonomies') are interesting for information retrieval where well understood taxonomies (category hierarchies) don't or can't exist.
Tags aren't applicable to Amazon's domain because everyone knows how to categorize consumer products. Everyone knows to walk to the Electronics section in Target to pick up the XBox360.
Nobody goes looking for their XBox 360 in the "blackthings" section or the "overhyped" tagsection.
Leave folksonomies to categorize the web like http://del.icio.us/ photos like http://flickr.com/ or art like http://cafepress.com/ -
Re:Don't pay for CD from these guys
And spread the word. It's all very well a few thousand geeks boycotting them but for it to really hurt we need to explain it (in suitably gentle terms) to the normals.
I'm liking these shirts http://www.cafepress.com/mojocrash as a conversation starter - although I give it about two days before Sony have them taken down.
We need to find a way to communicate just how outrageous this is to the people who form the bulk of Sony's market - i.e. NOT US. -

Before a school board permits any teaching about Intelligent Design in science class, its proponents should have to provide some shred scientific evidence that supports their idea.
Do not let them waste time attacking the Theory of Evolution; discrediting idea A does not in any way pove idea B!
It is funny: Proponents of ID want to control what gets taught in science class, but they do not want to be bothered to do their own science "homework"!

Hmm... well, it was worth a shot...
I'm going ahead and warning everybody I know about this, though...
Hopefully, Sony can be stopped.

What type of publishing?
If you mean purely online, you missed photo streams (aka: blogging with pictures), video blogging and game publishing - not to mention the completely obvious (and so last-decade) free web sites. For simply distributing content, there's always BitTorrent and - my favorite underexploited - "magnet://" style links which can point to content on Peer 2 Peer networks.
On the live front, there's also the whole webcam thing which gave rise to the camwhore movement. Shoutcast type things for "internet broadcasting" your own radio station. You can also creat your own internet television station if you want.
The very latest cutting edge variant on this is peer to peer streaming video, often refered to as CoolStreaming. There's maybe a 2 to 5 minute delay in the stream as it takes a little while to patch together the video before it's decodable. While so far it's popularity seems to be limited to China (where it's used to pirate / rebroadcast regular TV channels), the main advantage is that you should be able to establish your own streaming P2P television channel with an almost unlimited number of viewers - from your existing broadband internet connection.
And finally, where the online world meets the offline, physical items are designed and sold online in virtual stores, then physically published and shipped on demand. Like Cafe Press for stuff with logos - and Lulu for things like books and CDs. -
Re:QLink
You can compliment your original Q-Link mug and support the Q-Link Reloaded project by ordering a new mug. Then you can fill up your mugs with coffee and stay up all night soaking in the retro goodness.

Physics, Biology, and women's healthI'm glad to see that other people are thinking the same thing about America's scientific lead slipping. This has been on my mind often as the Europeans take the lead in physics with their new accelerator coming on-line in the next few years, while we American's have abandoned our Super Conducting Super Collider.
My friend says that America has become strong through tax investments in science. But that's all changing now. Science apparently isn't good for a quick profit. If the devolutions win, then we'll all lose. http://www.cafepress.com/americanvalues/779781
Especially in the areas of women's health. Who here has heard about microbiocides? We should be pushing a large amount of money into these to prevent the transmission of disease here in America, and around the world. http://www.microbicide.org/
The bottom line seems to be that an educated populace is not easily manipulated by politicians. Can anything else explain their behaviour?

Re:#1 thing Inkscake is missing
I disagree about Inkscape crashing all the time. I've been using 0.41 on ubuntu to design tshirts ( http://www.cafepress.com/urunu ) and it has been very stable, only crashed once or twice and that was when i was using it under Windows.
I thoroughly recommend Inkscape. -
Re:Cafepress Has Been Growing and Changing
It would be nice if CafePress' Premium service would allow you to run the store from your own domain rather than http://cafepress.com/yourstorename/.
They've got their name plastered all over the pages with the top banner and a 'powered by' in the bottom.

Re:Not so unique...
Yes, exactly http://www.cafepress.com/cp/customize/
-
This is just CafePress, right?
Sure, it's a good idea. And I really don't mind there being more competition in the market, but isn't CafePress already doing this with all sorts of apparel and other easily printable goods? In addition, isn't Stamps.com already doing this with stamps. And aren't there a number of sites that do this with photographs?
Yeah, printing customized materials cheaply is a great service... and combining the best features of all the currently available sites can only benefit us as a whole, but it's not unique and I'd be surprised if it were a big success. -
Re:Not so unique...

Is this really new?
Is it just me, or does the idea for Zazzle seem remarkably close to the idea behind Cafe Press?

New T-Shirts too

Re:Did you consider....
You could also consider "self-publishing", as well as creative commons. . . Something like http://cafepress.com/, which sends you a check for anything over their costs - some profit for themselves. You determine the price, AND you continue to own the copyright, so you can still provide free downloads of the PDF, if you like.
I have no affiliation with Cafepress besides having bought a couple of t-shirts from them. -
Re:quality web sites?? where are they????
When the internet first started, there were better websites that were free. Not anymore, they got pushed off the web.
The web isn't this finite space that you have to clear out before adding new things. You make it sound like a bunch of good websites had to be deleted to make room for the new commercial ones. That's bollocks.
You can make a new non-commercial website more easily today than you could "when the internet first started". And you can read such websites more easily today than you could "when the internet first started". And both of these things are primarily due to the commercial success of the internet.
I think the web has outlived its usefullness.
Then what are you still doing here? If you really believed that, then you would have unplugged your computer from the internet already. I get the impression you don't really think the internet's useless, but you want to sound cool by going on about "the old days". Uphill in the snow.

Re:It's a tool, not a piece of art
Inspired and exciting design makes people more productive.
Is that a joke? The very worst thing in the world as far as productivity goes is an interface with surprises. Boring interfaces are more usable because you know exactly what to expect.

Re:Great stuff
Was anyone else struck by how Titan seems very similar to Mars on its surface shot? Lots of small rocks and boulders laying around its surface and a general haze present etc etc.
That reminds me of this other object that NASA has published quite a few pictures of... what was its name again... oh yeah, Earth.
Surely pretty much any planet with a solid crust is going to exhibit features like "rocks"?
