Re:Ooh! Can't wait to play it...
http://www.phantom.net/
GOD they still exist. But their SSL cert is expired as of last August. So now, they are a keyboard company? -
Re:Wii FPS controls
If you give the console gamers the option of a keyboard/mouse that doesn't mean you're FORCING them to use it... I could somewhat understand why MS didn't want keyboard and mouse on the Xbox 1, but at this point in the game there's no reason they can't open up that kind of support for 3rd parties should they so desire to offer the option.
I had a keyboard and mouse on my Dreamcast back in the Day and Playing Quake III, UT, and Outtrigger was nice. Not to mention great games like Rez also supported the mouse and were much much easier to play using that instead of an analog stick.
As for backbreaking... Well maybe a console FPS with keyboard and mouse would be a good excuse to buy a Lapboard. -
Re:Dis-N-Gage
I think that the N-Gage brand is already firmly entrenched in the minds of gamers, but for all of the wrong reasons.
I think their only real competition is the Phantom.
-
Re:Will this lead to Intel monopoly again?
Lets just say that to compete in that industry, you would probably have to launch yourself outside that box and think spatially...
Outside of the box... so the processor is in a box right now. Think spacially... space is empty. So it would be a company selling the processor taken out of an empty box
Phantom Entertainment will release the CPU from their Phantom Console!! -
Infinium Phantom 2.0
Deja Vu of when I wasted good money parking domain names for the infinium phantom.

Re:Are there more Xbox 360 or HTPC systems?
A TV tray with a shorty keyboard actually works pretty well. I just grab a chair from the dining room or the home office. It's not ideal, but neither is doing these kinds of games with a gamepad. I have high hopes for the Phantom Lapboard.
The lack of split screen mutiplayer games is a bigger problem, but, hey, I never said the PC should replace consoles. It's just a heck of a lot of fun playing Doom3 on a big screen with 5.1 and no lights :-) I was kind of hoping more people would catch on so we could get more cool stuff like the Phantom.

cmon now
For $130 bucks, surely they could include a more ergonomic looking mouse than this

copy and paste your resume into the subject field
Anybody with a really short resume looking for a job at Phantom?
http://www.phantom.net/content/contactUs/careers.
h tml:Our future depends on bright, energetic, talented people who share a passion for creating the best product imaginable! We offer a challenging work environment, a competitive salary, and excellent benefits. Interested candidates should apply online using our contact form and selecting the "Human Resources" department. Please copy and paste your resume into the subject field.
The fact that they have no actual office, and use Mailboxes Etc as a mail drop, certainly makes the work environment challenging. Another great line:
SEC Filings
You can browse SEC filings in Edgar by clicking here. Note that you will be redirected to an external website. We cannot guarantee the accuracy and timeliness of any information therein. Why does Phantom have a disclaimer warning investors not to trust what they read about them on the SEC site? It should be reworded: "Phantom cannot guarantee the accuracy and timeliness of any information we file with the SEC", like: Notification of inability to timely file Form 10-Q or 10-QSB, or [Amend]Statement of changes in beneficial ownership of securities, or Registration Withdrawal Request.

Re:It's so cliched now but...It is especially apt compared to the original claims about the platform. This was supposed to be revolutionary, now it seems like it will be yet another pay-to-play PC progam. HardOCP was perhaps the most skeptical of the device's claims back in 2003 when other tech news outlets were still drooling over the proposed specs.
The company's website still features the Lapboard as coming soon. I hope that they get the Lapboard out the door and into the market as it has some promise and seems feasible to design. However if it does appear in stores it will still have heavy competition from Logitech, Microsoft and all the other usual suspects. -
Time to switch platforms again?
Maybe they'll just focus the development effort on the Phantom console. That should give them plenty of time.
-
Re:Yeah, sure.
there appear to be photos of people using the device at E3 on the Phantom Website, buried in the "media" section.
-
No picture in either article
From TFA: The Phantom Lapboard is an innovative peripheral that enables players to control games designed for keyboard and mouse usage with as much agility as they are used to in the office, from the comfort of the couch or easy chair. The Lapboard rotates for left- and right-handed users and also inclines on a 30-degree angle with a hard surface below for the Phantom Mouse. The device is wireless and provides USB and headphone/microphone ports. The Phantom Lapboard interchangeable key-face technology is designed for game-specific and business software applications.
Neither article has a picture. Visit http://www.phantom.net/ for that. -
Worst case?TFA says:
When we say the PlayStation 3 could end up in third place that is a worst case scenario for Sony.
So are they going out on a limb and saying that Sony will outsell the Phantom? -
Don't you know why?
Guys! Don't you know? The only reason they took so long developing it is because they had to recode the whole thing for its exclusive release for the Infinium Labs Phantom!
Duh!
-
Introduction are in order
-
Re:Anti-Trust
Its only an illegal monopoly if they use their posistion to stop competition. There's nothing that says they can't be the only one producing consoles...
Even if MS bought out Sony, they would still have to worry about competition from these guys -

Re:EA...
No one comments about companies who have always performed poorly, "oh how the mildly pathetic have become even worse."
There are plenty of articles about how Infinium Labs sucks, and they haven't so much as put out a product, yet.
Derek Smart put out what many consider a long string of terrible games and even among those that despise him, he's something of a legend. [Caveat: I haven't played any Derek Smart games. I'm just saying the only press for these games I've seen is bad. They could be sparkling jewels of brilliance, my point is that the media never liked them.]
ION Storm Dallas never created one great hit and they're still laughed about today (although Romero came from iD, so this could be a "how the mighty have fallen" thing).
There's plenty of companies that start bad, stay bad, and the gaming media never tires of slinging mud at them. -
Re:the payoff
Could you be a little more specific?
Well, if you want to talk the best of the best, Infinium Labs is one. Thinking of the great stuff that's come out of there it's a good thing they've got the power of a Dell!
BTW: Has anyone else looked at their stock price? Holy crap... if they ever really did release something besides hype you might make a chunk of change. You can all laugh, but when they release the Phantom with Duke Nukem Forever as a launch title I'll be rolling in the dough while all of Slashdot tries to think of replacement vaporware to fill the sudden void.
PS: Can anyone here decipher their SEC filings to get an idea of how much money they are making/spending? The form I normally look for are not present (the 10-K annual filing), though I do see a number of "Notification of inability to timely file" entries. -
Re:Still confused on the sell-out history
I think these guys have them beat.
-
i bet...
the Phantom will contain one of these when it comes out...
-
Re:You know...
At this point, your shares are worth more as toilet paper. Don't even bother collecting on your penny...
-
Re:I'm not feeling the X360 love
Fuck all of them, I want a Phantom console.
-
In other news...Infinium Systems announced the addition of wireless gaming to the panoply of features included in their phantom Phantom Gaming Console.

Phantom Stock History
It's funny that they would want to include this on their website. -
I'll buy one
...as soon as I can trade saved Duke Nukem Forever games between it and my Phantom.

Re:what's the vapor-equivalent of hardware?
-
Err.. guys...
We're 1 month past mid 2005. I know I'm gonna be getting a haircut in 2007 and I know that's good planning, but I know for a fact that my hair is gonna grow longer then (if I'm not bald then). Who knows what's gonna happen to the console world 1.5 years down the road? Maybe this will be out then? ---> http://www.phantom.net/
-
Don't get so exceited
It's just a modded Phantom console from Infinium Labs.

misleading info at phantom website
If you visit their website, they have an E3 gallery with photos of their stand. I now assume this is from last year - however it is somewhat misleading. http://www.phantom.net/mediacenter/gallery.asp

Re:crazy idea
What, like the infamous phantom console?
-
Re:That brings back memories.
Sounds like everyone's favorite vaporware too.
-
Re:What's next?
I bet the Phantom will be next.
Wait, no. -
Re:What a load of pseudo-scientific bullshit
Now now, let's not be too hard on these guys. I hear at least one company has signed on to use this on the batteries of their portable game unit.
-
Re:I think steam is a good idea> I think Steam system is pretty cool. You can download the game and play it on whatever computer you want, whenver you want. No need to worry about having the cd around.
Holy crap! We found the only guy to buy an Infinium Phantom console. (You know, that vaporware company that sued HardOCP for calling it umm... vaporware...
Hey... where is Phantom anyway?
"You got your Steam in my Phantom!"
"You got your Phantom in my Valve!"
"Two shitty tastes that taste even worse together! Infinium Steamy Fecal Cups!" -
Re:What if they fail?
Make sure you come up with a flashy business plan. The real money is in playing the VCs.
-
Oh, you mean like this...?
*cough*Phantom Console*cough*
-
Re:Details?I'll save you some time. You can get a PDF of the press release here.
Sounds like a lot of out dates PC games, but it's hard to tell.
-
This product is doomed.
Do they seriously expect to be able to compete against Infinium Labs' Phantom? Good luck!
-
From the website:
Phantom website
Infinium Labs, Inc. was founded by a management team...
That's all I need to hear. -
Infinium wants to be on the ASE...
I wonder how these lawsuits are going to look in their planned filing with the American Stock Exchange?
