Re:they already have this ... helicopters
"So I say to the guy, How're you going to get the tank down to the planet? And he goes, I'll just put it on the ship. And I go, if you've got a ship that can carry a tank, why not just put guns on the ship and use it instead?"

They could always do what the military does...
During military wargaming exercises, it's pretty much always Red vs. Blue.
But I guess Halo covered that already.

Seriously, tattoos are lame.
Tattoos aren't in and of themselves lame. People get all sort of lame tattoos, however....
Obligatory Red vs. Blue (which is a phrase you probably haven't heard in years)...

Re:Accelerometer
No games like that for the mac.... but they do have Tetris. And Breakout... and Superbreakout. The confusing thing about PCs is, you like, go to the store, and there are just so many games. I mean, everywhere you look! But on the Mac, there's just six. And you already know which ones are good, 'cause they came out on the PC like five years ago!

Machinima is movie making with video game engines
Here is a wiki link for Machinima if you want to know more. One of the more popular movies (recently anyway) is Red vs. Blue made by recording Halo sessions.

ummmm...Does even bandai realise that most people can simply rip their DVDs to an avi format and then convert them to UMD with a 3rd party hack?
What follows is a tutorial for doing just that
(lovingly stolen from my friends redvsblue journal).
March 26th, 2005 The tutorial for getting RvB on PSP Important Step Skipped, try again if you didn't get it before.
OK. Many of you have been wondering, WTF, why can't I just drag and drop my files, and bam there are my movies? One of the sad things about the PSP is, the lack of a program on the computer that easily sorts out the files.
Go here, and watch the tutorial. If you don't have time... just connect your psp to the computer and make a folder on it entitled: "MP_ROOT." Then make a folder within that called: "100MNV01"
Note: "MP_ROOT" should be right next to the folder called "PSP," not inside of it.Also, although not tested, I don't believe you need a video saying, congradulations on getting video to your PSP.
Download this, next
This is the 3GP website. For those of you that want to know the source of the site, its in Japanese.
When you get it downloaded, unzip the file, and then install the software. EDIT IMPORTANT: Double click SETUP and change it to MP4, PSP (you can use "direct" if you have USB mode set up on your PSP). You'll know that you're good so far when you see a program that looks like this:
http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/images/3GPP
C onv_01.gif You can change the language to English.Set a directory (unless you want it to hog up the desktop, two files will be made each time you start a conversion. Drag and drop an episode of your choice, and the program should begin a conversion. Watch the log, to see if it is making good progress. If you want episode fifty-two, the episode is downloadable at the bottom for PSP play.
I ran into a problem with both Windows Media Video, and
.mov formats.Divx versions of the episodes worked fine.
Once you recieve TWO output files, with the beginning numbers "M4VCXXXX" (x=numbers) with a
.mp4 extension and a .THM format, drag and drop the two files into "100MNV01."Enjoy
For those of you who are redvsblue members and would like to go mod him up,the entery from which I stole is Here

I beg to differ.A tank would be so much cooler. It would give new meaning to WarDriving.

The Rise of Free ContentI've long been saying that the content cartels will eventually be overthrown by a mass of free content. The cost and availability of the tools required for 'high quality' special effects has been rapidly declining, and we're beginning to see more and more content from , flash sites, and .
The majority of free content created is, of course, subpar. The tools still need to be wielded by skilled artisans to created above average content. Regardless, as the bar continues to be lowered for entry into the field, more and more people with some degree of talent will find new outlets for their creativity.
I don't see there being any sort of mass uprising anytime soon, as the content cartels still have a lot on the distribution outlets, but the rise of the Internet has changed the playing field dramatically. The major counter-argument has been that the content cartels can merely buy up the few quality titles to maintain their advantage, but my theory is that there is enough latent creativity waiting in the wings they won't be able to stem the tide.
Well... I can dream, can't I?

Re:What does this mean for the future of televisio
All the problems you describe can (arguably) be solved if we could get out from under the insanity that is corporate media in the US. I find it so frustrating that these dinosaur companies are buying protection for their failing business model that needs to evolve into this millenium.
With things like video-on-demand and internet distribution, small teams of not-well-funded people can make amazing art. Consider Homestar Runner and Red vs Blue. HR has allowed the two brothers who make it to make a living off of selling T-Shirts. This shows that an independent body can create something wildly popular. The Rise Of Blogging (tm) also shows that new content can become an instant phenomenon.
I think that the solution to this is to boycott our cable/satellite companies, MPAA movie theaters and RIAA record labels and be vocal about it. Write to our elected officials and tell them that local and independent media is important, and remind them that free expression on a local level is what will make or break them, as well as being the lifeblood of democracy. -

What MS/Bungie Should Do...
What Microsoft and Bungie should do is just make the movie themselves. Make the movie a 90 minute cutscene using the Halo 2 engine. It would cost a fraction of the cost and it would be on the same level as all the other movies made from games. While we're at it, Namco should have done this too for Tekken instead of allowing this piece of shit to be made. It shouldn't be that hard. If the Red Vs. Blue guys did it with next to nothing for a budge someone with a serious budget should be able to make some good, right?

Re:First Post.
What the street vendor is really selling you (other than mysterious meat-like products) is convenience. He's right there, where you are, when you're hungry. If you have to go home to eat, you're giving up the convenience that is his real value. Sure, if you walk by his stand and think, "nah... I can hold out for another 30 minutes" he is missing out on the sale, but people make those judgements every day - it's part of the risk he's taking when he starts his hot dog empire. Now: if he were standing on the streetcorner playing guitar, and you really liked his music, and he says, "If you really like it so much, I've got DVDs of one of my performances right here - only $20!" But, standing right next to him is a guy that already bought the DVD last month, and is hold a sign that says "information wants to be free!" and has a URL of a web site where you can just download the guy's performance without paying for it... now that's another matter.
I think that the concept goes deeper than that. The idea is that no loger do you need large record labels to "find" artists and distribute music, there is a new way to do that(internet), and the new way is less expensive. So where you needed studios and thousands of dollars in sound processing, now all you need is a home computer (to some extent).
So, to revisit hot-dogs, the guy on the corner has a ten thousand dollar machine that will make hot dogs, but in order to get them, you have to go to wherever he is, eat at his table, with his condiments; if you don't like that you get no hot-dog.
Then there is another hot-dog making machine that people can fit in their pockets. These people just like using their machines. They would make hot-dogs if you wanted one or not. They are more than happy to get paid for that hot dog and they will let you eat it wherever and however you want.
This applies much more to music than it does to video, because the 'create cheaply in a basement' is not really here yet for video. But it will get here.
So the Big hot-dog guy could charge whatever he wanted, but now, the people that make the hot dogs in the first place have no need for the big hot dog guy.
I will allow that there are some holes in the hot-dog analogy; but that is how analogies go. I think that the important part, that the system is changing so radically as to upset an enourmous balace of power is potrayed. -
Strangerhood
I'm surprised nobody (at my threshold?) has mentioned Rooster Teeth Productions' The Strangerhood, an online series done using The Sims 2.
Personally, however, I prefer their Red vs. Blue, a series done using Halo, and more recently Halo 2. -

A lot of content is produced that way. Some of it even good one. Just beacause it's not video doesn't mean it doesn't count.
And let's face it, most of us would rather read a comic with a pile of crap fighting psycho-bears than see some bald guy parading in front of a camerafor half an hour, no matter what he actually did. -

Red vs. Blue
Wait, didn't some guys already do this?
RedvsBlue.com
Church: Tucker, we don't have time for this. Why would they give us a teleporter if it doesn't work?
Tucker: I don't know! Why would they give us a tank that no one can drive?
Church: We already tested the teleporter, remember?
Tucker: We threw rocks through it!
Church: Yeah, and? So what? The rocks came out the other side, didn't they?
Tucker: Yeah, but they were all hot and covered with black stuff.
Church: Oh, so I guess that's what this is all about, then. You're afraid of a little black stuff.
Tucker: Yes, I am. I am afraid of black stuff.
Church: Tucker, // aims assault rifle at Tucker's head // I almost hate to do this to you...
Tucker: You wouldn't.
Church: You know, I look at it this way: either a) we go through there, and get the flag back, or b) we stay here and I get to kill you. Either way, I win.
Tucker: For the record, I want you to know, rocks aren't people.
Church: Duly noted. Now get in there. -

Re:What we need to do...
I can just see it now: (from Red vs. Blue)
Simmons: Seriously though, why are we out here? As far as I can tell it's just a box canyon in the middle of nowhere...no way in or out.
Grif: uh huh...
Simmons: The only reason that we set up a red base here is because they have a blue base over there. And the only reason they have a blue base over there is because we have a red base over here.
Grif: Yeah, that's because we're fighting each other.
Simmons: No, no, but I mean, even if we were to pull out today and they were to come take our base they would have two bases in the middle of a box canyon. Whoop-dee-fucking-do. -
Re:Halo: The Movie
I thought someone already did this. Not Microsoft-sponsered, of course.

I wanna see...
What kind of movies the guys from Red vs Blue could do with this system!

Re:Poor guys...
It seems to be a strange but common slashdot fallacy to assume that slashdot has more traffic than almost anybody else. The RvB FAQ claims half a million downloads a week during the active season. IIRC a typical slashdotting sends a few tens of thousands of hits, and a small proportion of that will be people who are both prepared to download a 50MB movie and weren't going to do so anyway. It'll barely be noticeable, if that FAQ entry is true.
-
Slashtorrent.
50MB downloads linked by
/. ? No wonder they can't do the math.Maybe
/. should start running it's own BitTorrent tracker, and ask permission from the content owners to host it. When/if they say yes, the story can be updated with a link to the torrent, ending their misery and ours. -
Re:What Is It?Q: What the hell?
A: Yeah, we know.Q: No seriously. What the hell?
A: Oh. We just write scripts and then use videogames to act them out. It's a new style of animation that some people call machinima. It allows to make weekly pieces of animation with a small group of people.Q: That was a long response.
A: Yes it was. From the RvB FAQ.

Re:Will it really be better and interesting-er?
Will a Red vs Blue series foolow?
The new series will start shortly, and may use Halo 2.
It had better be better than the previous one.
Q: Is Season 3 going to be stupid and immature like Season 1 or story-driven and boring like Season 2?
A: We promise to disappoint you in all new ways. -
Re:Go figure.
Someone used Halo to make animated shorts. Check these out. Scroll down to the episodes, they're pretty damn funny.
-
Just needs more links
So here you go so you don't have to look for stuff. Most of the popular machinima films can be found on machinima.com, these awards are from the Halo community so the most popular films are at XboxOttawa, home to Fire Team Charlie Productions, the famous RedvsBlue, and ThatWeasel. Tonnes and tonnes of videos are up for prizes and awards, trick vids, tutorials or documentaries as well, browse through a major list of all halo videos here at Halo.Bungie.Org. And in case you hadnt seen this awards show last year it was huge, and got a few mentions on slashdot here and here

Drafthouse did this last month with RedvBlue
and they are doing it again next month before the showing of of the season 2 DVD of Redvsblue. I've often thought of doing something similar. I'd have our Texas Gaming Festival at Drafthouse, but the tables are not big enough for a computer. Console works though, and it is more fun seeing Mr. Sinus at Drafthouse where they belong instead of at a makeshift venue during Quakecon.

Red v. Blue
So does this mean adapting Red Versus Blue to the big screen? That's good news for everyone still using dialup.
-
Re:3rd person
They should ask the Rooster Teeth crew (the people behind Red vs Blue) to direct.
This would make great entertainment -
Re:More Useful Engines
Stargate SG-1 just had an episode last Friday ("Avatar") using some in-game footage from an upcoming SG-1 game. It wasn't a particularly effective use of the footage, though - it seemed more like it was wedged in there by marketing than by the writers.
Molyneux and friends are also working on a game called "The Movies" which could ostensibly be used to produce amateur renditions of movies or shows.
And, of course, who can forget the use of the Halo engine in Red vs Blue, the second season of which was just released on a hilarious DVD.
-
Re:CONTENT!!
Blazing high speeds encourage more content. If you could download a movie in five minutes, either the MPAA would have to get off their butts and release movies over the Internet or P2P movie swapping would go mainstream. Either way, more content. If you could host a medium-to-large sized website on your home connection, you could provide more content yourself. Your friends and family could provide more content for you to download (photo, audio, or video blogs instead of text blogs). As it becomes cheaper to host real websites over home connections, more small content projects like Red vs. Blue or Homestar Runner will be able to get started and thrive. The speeds come before the content, but the content does come.
