Here's my analysis of Adnan Hajj's disastrous image,

This Image Is Not Faked

(The page is written for a general audience, which is why I explain powers-of-two and other computery things.)

It is a bad image which should never have been printed, but the mistake was purely technical and is the same level of mistake as using too much red-eye correction or bad white points, or out-of-focus even.

The mistake was much more on Reuters's photo editor deciding to print such a messed-up picture, than their stringer who through haste submitted it. It's the editor's job to decide what, *if anything*, to print to accompany a story. It's the photographer's job to provide a lot of options for the editor. In the olden days, proof sheets full of options.

I know all the real editors are dead. A shame. Journalism used to be almost respectable!

(I did the photography/journalism stuff for six years in school, never at a professional level. I've done digital audio synthesis since the late 70s, and DSP professionally a few times since the mid-80s, including coding testing and releasing dust removal software. Thus the disastrous image immediately struck me as familiar, similar to testing situations.)

If you are a RR subscriber in Austin, TX and have an infected machine; it will be flagged on the network. Once done, the packets get sniffed for viri, spamming, bot attacks, and excessive port scanning. At this point, the network security department files a motion to our tech support deparment to disable the user. From here, we send a DOCSIS command to upload a disable.bin file to the modem.

I think the customer gets two tries to clean their computer last I remembered. If they get disabled again on the third time for the same issues, they must speak directly with the security department to resolve the issue. Basically however, they just need to call the tech support line to get their connection re-enabled and get chewed over the phone for not taking measures to secure their wireless network and/or computers behind the cable modem. Because RR users have access to FREE antivirus software (EZ Armor from CA), the lazy bums no longer have an excuse to stay unprotected.

My particular interest was to use information from the GFDL-licensed Wikipedia in GPL programs. I'd go further and question the very reasons the GFDL was created in the first place -- just to make dead tree book publishers' lives easier? Where is the emphasis on freedom there?

I think it is easy for any technologist to underestimate community issues and then to see a license as a program for individual behavior instead of a constitution for a community. The GPL works. It has problems, sure, but it works well enough as a constitution for cooperation. More variants of licenses mainly just make more problems IMHO.

I wished I lived on your planet where the price of cable access has gone down. I've paid $50 a month for RoadRunner since 1999.

I had RoadRunner myself at that $55 price ($50 + $5 cable modem rental). These days, it looks to be about $45/mo including modem. That doesn't include the promotional pricing that lasts 3-6 months depending on your provider. Perhaps not a huge decrease in price, but still a promising general direction for consumers.

Some people don't use Firefox because they already have IE and it works. Others don't use Firefox because of how it works.

They might not like how it does things like
- no "Stop" button on the toolbar
-a mandatory search control toolbar - the kind of "browser helper" thing people have been told contain spyware (anyone remember "Gator"?). (if they wanted a Google, Yahoo or other search toolbar, they would have downloaded and installed one)
-they want to view page source in an editor and not in a dumbed down browser window.

As to conforming to standards compare the rendering of the left column (width: 22ex;) on this site when viewed with IE versus with Firefox.

Many use IE so know it works. They normally prefer to not fix what they feel is not broken. If your web site is one of the rare ones that does not work with IE, they are more likely to decide the site is broken than that to download and use some other browser.

If you want to promote Firefox then tell people compelling reasons why it is better for them
and not some "Microsoft is the evil empire with all that money and we socialists object to that" type of drivel.

...through modern microcontrollers. I have a great time playing with Microchip's offerings (PIC series) - although Freescale, Atmel, etc. have equally good equivalents.

You get seriously fast little CPUs in very self-contained packages (I use the DIP packages - easier to hold, solder and plug into breadboards). The old magic returns.

As an aside, a couple of years ago I put together a NIBL basic microcontroller using a SC/MP II (INS8060) CPU I had from decades ago! If you want to see it, here's the URL:

Since that image, I have loaded the ROM image onto an EPROM (rewiring the board a bit for it) - and have applied a tweak I saw in an old Elektor magazine - speeding up the serial communication to 2400Baud (much more comfortable than it's original speed).

On the main topic, my first programmable machine was an HP 25 calculator (1976ish). The first real computer on which I wrote a running program was a Univac 1100 (punch cards, no less!). My first home machine was an Apple II+ - with the 16K expansion card and UCSD Pascal system - oh was I ever king of the hill!

Does my CDMA phone drain the battery faster when it says it is "searching"?

Short answer: Yes, quite a lot.

Long answer: In order to make the battery last as long as possible, all CDMA phones turn on and off portions of themselves constantly.

When the phone is normally idle, the receiver is only on perhaps 2% of the time, if that. But when the phone says it issearching, that means it is attempting to get in contact with the cellular system. To do that, it has to have the receiver on most of the time.

The receiver consumes quite a lot of power, and therefore the phone will drain the battery much faster if it spends long periods searching. If you're going into an area where you can be pretty certain the phone can never contact a cell (such as riding a subway), you might want to turn the phone off in order to preserve the battery. (Note that it does not harm the phone or the battery to search; it just runs the battery down.)

You can be sure it's not a penguin in sheep's clothing. Considering how fat penguins are they couldn't really fit into much. I wonder what this says about your average Linux user.

The March Upcountry series is actually quite good. It reads like more of Ringo's work than Weber's, for what that's worth. The series works out to be a pretty good coming of age tale, and the paeans to the martial virtues are not overblown. I caught the first two books when they were in the free library and then bought the last two.

Ahh Starfire. The original pocket edition is one of the best games of its generation. It hasn't stood up well - although I prefer the 2d6 weapon rolls to the 1d10 just because I love the feel of the 2d6 bell curve- so I'm playing Full Thrust these days, predominantly online with FTJava - multiplayer, transport over email so not realtime, fog of war, and fighters coming this week in the 1.0 release. Starfire was cursed with mediocre expansions and overcomplex campaign games. Weber came along for the 2nd edition and rewrote the game to be more complex to handle the large battles he wanted (yes, that's what happened). And he wrote novels. They degenerated into one massive assault through a warp point after another. There's no ftl travel, you go through warp poitns and come out in another system. And they're easily defended with vast minefields and ginormous fortresses. Ungameably ugly in my opinion, you're forced into brute force up-the-middle attacks. This forces fleet sizes upwards to sustain the horrific casualty rates (90% attrition in fighter units in battle after battle, 90% percent people. Add in an even more extreme version of the technological one-upmanship in the Honor Harrington books and you get a really flashy strategic situation that's utterly boring to play.

On the other hand, the game for the Honor Harrington series is based on the excellent Attack Vector, which manages to put 3d Newtonian space combat on the tabletop. They're calling it the Saganami Island Tactical Simulator and yes, I do have a (small, non-financial) interest in the company. It's on my Christmas list for myself, just ordered it now (yes, I've been good).

The "time tunnel" effect is always a crowd pleaser. Drill a hole in a penny and press it onto the shaft of a small DC motor. (It needs to be almost, but not perfectly, perpendicular to the shaft.) Glue a small mirror (1" square or less) onto the penny. Turn on the motor and bounce the beam off the spinning mirror. Add some fog to the room and dim the lights, and you've got a very cool effect indeed. (Wrap a rubber band around the barrel of the laser pointer to keep it on, and tape it into position near the spinning mirror.)

Or you can build two spinning mirror assemblies and generate lissajous patterns. (Think: Spirograph)

Or use some hot glue to tack a tiny mirror onto your speaker's woofer. Bounce the laser off the mirror while you play loud music, and you'll get all sorts of wierd patterns.

Or lay a CD-ROM on your turntable (you do still have one, right?) with the reflective surface up, and bounce the laser off the disc. (The narrow tracks act like a diffraction grating, splitting a single beam into multiple beams.) Slowly rotate the turntable platter (especially with the disc slightly offset from center) to get more effects.
