Think Geek T-Shirt...
How do -you- explain software development complexity to non-developers? What analogies do you use?
There's a T-shirt that sums it up nicely: I See Dumb People -
a clue from you
grab one of these http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/frustrations/388
b /
Now that's subtle-TEE in action!!! -
All the pun, none of the caloriesI'm rather fond of Sugar Free Bawls. It has a lightly sweet taste from sucralose and guarana, with a nice low calorie count. I'm not one for "diet" drinks, but this is how I take my Bawls.
Which reminds me: I was up late last night; I'd better grab a pair for work.
-
SimpleYou could take some these seemingly sensible steps mentioned in other posts, but if you just wear this next time you stop by you can cut out that uncomfortable social interaction. Once you walk in, I'm sure the unequivocal statement printed upon your apparel will make your intentions perfectly clear and you can leave without a word!
Just think of the countless other unpleasant conversations you could completely avoid with this method! There's the "I'm cheating on you with your best friend." shirt, or how about "Your mother and I are getting a divorce."? The possibilities are endless!
-
Soda alternativeYou're unlikely to find a regular soda with a noticably reduced sugar content. They're pretty much about all the same, or in some cases, worse. Also, stay away from diet soda! Not only does it not taste as good as the real thing, but any drink containing aspertame or equivalent should be avoided like the plague.
You were a little vague as to what you really wanted. Are you drinking soda for the caffine, the taste, or both? Here are some suggestions:
ThinkGeek has a nice collection of interesting drinks. Although, you might want to research each ones nutritional content. If you're looking for a caffeine boost without all the extras, then caffienated water might be something to look into. I haven't ever had anything like that though, so I wouldn't know if it's actually bad for you or not.
The healthiest alternative to soda is probably seltzer, although if you decide to drink this I recommend getting a variety with flavor (lemon, lime..) because plain seltzer doesn't always taste so great. I actually enjoy drinking this stuff more than water, and you can buy canned versions that come in a decent sized case at your local food market.
The other obvious choices are coffee or tea. You can buy either in bottles, although unless you make it yourself, you might end up buying something that's about as healthy as the soda you're trying to replace. The only bottled coffee that I like is the Starbucks stuff, but it's not something that I would like to have very often.
Of course, if you're actually thirsty, I've found that just having water is good enough. It might not be as tasty as soda, but (unless contaminated) it's much better for you.

Re:Input
I'm surprised these things haven't started showing up in mobile devices yet. I guess maybe they're still a bit too pricy, and maybe a bit too large. Wouldn't be a total replacement for a keyboard, since you want to be able to provide input without putting the device down on a desk -- but would be great for when you want to do some serious typing.

Re:Policy and Legislation
Actually, I think the shopping attire will eventually be mandated...
And does this mean whenever someone asks me if I can help them I'd get in trouble?
Although... it does remind me of my retail days... one customer asked someone who was wearing close to the same clothes as the staff where something was... when the person being asked said they didn't know, the one asking started ranting and swearing at them... for five minutes... after he stopped, the person who was asked calmly said, "I don't work here." Then turned and walked away... of course... the entire staff was in the next aisle over trying not to laugh out loud too loudly...

Re:Done all the time! We've been doing this sort of support where I work and it generates nothing but bad karma with the computer illiterates (yeah, we've tried training them). In many companies it will not be the same as running a standalone shop. You get to look at these people every day in the office and the cafeteria after they've dumped their Quicken data and somehow now it's your fault. Don't give them that out.
Like many things, karma flows both ways.
Ever rescue your boss' home computer for her? That's the kind of karma you want to stick around. You can feed your protective aura even for the simplest of tasks, just because you were brave enough to not tell her "no".
Even so, I still wear my thinkgeek T-shirt to work every so often. (Doesn't help much -- even the pizza guy still asks us computer questions at lunch.)

Re:With intel insideAsk and ye shall receive: Kill-A-Watt

Re:With intel inside
Thinkgeek sells a single-outlet version of what you're looking for.
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/7657/
I expect you can hack these to interface with a computer (and hook up to your breaker box instead of outlets) or find something more apropriate elsewhere.
dvogt built a home power monitoring system, but the article is down. The slashdot coverage is still up, though.

Re:N80
...it gains wireless LAN (802.11g). Combine that with a keyboard accessory, the N80 could be very handy for remote on-the-go system administration (via whatever Series 60 SSH client exists) or blogging while on-the-go with the built-in 3MP camera.
I personally can't see myself investing in a small all-in-one electronic device (i.e. smaller than a laptop) until they figure out a way of making the keyboard comfortably fit adult hands. Blackberries are a step in the right direction as they use the standard QWERTY format (argue as much as you like about whether that's the better format, but it is the standard). However, for many the buttons are still too small -- you "thumb-type" instead of touch-typing. Perhaps the incorporation of one of these laser virtual keyboards would be a good solution, although it still has the restriction of needing a flat surface. Even so, a clipboard or some kind of folding plastic surface is a hell of a lot easier to carry around than a laptop. You could always go with a folding or roll-up keyboard instead, but at least with the laser one you have the option of not bringing anything else with you. How hard is it to find a flat surface, after all?
For that matter, the screens on many portable devices are also too small to make them practical for all-in-one use... Perhaps a device could use a tiny projector or something built into eye glasses to solve that problem as well. Essentially, it's possible to squeeze lots of functionality into a very small package, but the human body is only capable of dealing comfortably with interfaces of a certain size.
(Disclaimer: No, I don't have one of the laser keyboards, nor do I know how well that model works, nor do I work at ThinkGeek. It's just the idea that I think is interesting.) -
Keep the green.
Otherwise my T-shirt will be obsolete!

Being a geek
Well, I have to say, being a geek is a good thing. Im sure what people are afraid of being is nerds. Geeks have social lives, nerds do not, plus a few other minor differences. Geek is a title to be honored. I say this as I take a sip of a famous caffinated soft drink out of my "geek." glass I bought here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/mugs/5f01/

Re:The Input/Output Hurdle
I'd also be interested in a video iPod with a laser based projector that had wireless head phones with extended bluetooth range. Get a group of people with the headphones and you could have your movie theater almost anywhere!!!
Now a portable device that incorporates this technology would be something I'd be interested in as well.

Re:in other newsBut myspace is 'in' (like fuzzy d20 mirror dice!), even if myname.com grants +3 to epenis. Myspace has an int requirement of 0, personal domains require at least 11. I know several people who could hand-code a decent site in notepad and who have run their own domain that have a myspace account, simply because that's where the social networking is at right now. Maybe it's because I'm a fan of the traditional internet, so to speak - normally I hate tradition in any form, but back even just two years ago, it took at least a moderate level of brainpower to make your voice heard and your presence known.
Dunno, but I could have 314,159 friends on myspace, but what good would it do me? If I knew 100kpi people, let alone actually spoke with them on a regular basis (as friends do), I'd be a freakin' celebrity. There are only so many people you can have as real friends, and that number usually isn't anywhere near what you get with that four-deep group of mutual friends you get from myspace.
I was talking about it to a few friends (in person!) and I was the only one in the group without a myspace account. And I was also the only one well-versed in anything digital. I'd like to see anyone with a myspace program write out a css file, or even know what it stands for or what its purpose is. I've got a real blog, and while I used wordpress, if I was hardcore and drowning in free time, I could have written a primitive custom thing, even if it lacked a bit in the ajax department.
My first foray into web coding wasn't pretty, but it was mine, and honestly not that bad for an eleven-year-old using notepad. A year later, I tought myself C through adminning a MUD and eventually wrote an entire random item code which was in maybe a dozen of the probably thousands at the time (who had also handcoded one). Any moron can sign up for an account and write into a box that does all the work for them. I may use nl2br(htmlspecialchars($text)) to make my life easier, but I think that anyone publishing content should have an understanding of the medium on which it's being published. I don't mean doing a view source and rendering the page in your head, but people not familiar with <br> really shouln't be putting stuff online and thinking highly of themselves, as the myspacers tend to.

I'd take a PocketPC or PalmOS PDA Phone and a Bluetooth GPS and a 4GB Microdrive, combined with some nice Hiking maps. And maybe some nice bright flashing toys from ThinkGeek. For Self-protection, I'd want a Taser. Oh yeah, and a Sidewinder so that I don't have to find a power supply for any of this stuff.

Re:Actual advancement
The interesting part of this article is the fact that quasars could be used as a natural source of randomness for one time pads, yet can be accessed by both parties simultaneously.
And also by an attacker....
The historical problem with one time pads (and the reason they're rarely used in practice) is that it's a huge pain to distibute sufficient random data to all parties involved in a communication. Being able to use a natural source of randomness that's available to everyone at once would be a major increase in the usability of one time pads.
Actually, no it would not. You still have to distribute random data -- the quasar and time to start. One would expect that you'd want to pick random variations in start times or else a single leak / lucky guess completely blows away all the protection. With today's technology, distributing 1 GB of random data is just as easy as distributing a time + quasar; just use a flash drive or similar miniature electronic storage.
Also, this poses another problem: since you have to start at the same time, but you also want to be able to do this at high speed, you must synchronize your clocks for this to be useful at all, probably to less than a millisecond. This is not a trivial task.
I really think this is taking something simple and making it way too complex for no gain at all. It's certainly not more useable.

An excuse to buy one of these puppies: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/755e/
I've been threatening to take one of these to my local sports bar (2 dozen TVs, at least) and watch the hilarity ensue. Too bad they got the best wings in town and I don't want to get keel-hauled by the "regulars".
Turn off the TVs in the supermarket? Hell yeah.

Re:Is this a commercial?I did miss the part about Firewire. But so what? Firewire-powered drives are nothing new. I even own one, which I bought 4 years ago. But I haven't used the Firewire port since my Sony laptop was stolen. USB 2 is the standard now — it's faster, and more widely implemented.
USB-powered isn't a big deal either. You're right, most drives aren't USB-powered. But many are, including this puppy which I just bought from Slashdot's sister site, ironically enough.
Daisy-chaining is nice, but not worth paying such a huge premium for.

Re:Replaced my servers for this reason..
You can easily measure how much power your computer draws with a multimeter from the hardware store - last time I was there I saw them for about $10. Put the meter on the AC amps scale, make sure the wires are plugged into the amp reading ports, and then wire it in series with your computer.
Don't forget, what you're measuring is apparent power, which is really volt-amps. Computer power supplies have a significant power factor, so what you really want to do is measure the corrected real power which is in watts.
Go to ThinkGeek and pick up a Kill-A-Watt, which will not only tell you how many watts your computer actually consumes, but also things like power-factor and kilowatt-hours, which is a much more accurate measure of power consumption. -
Classy Digital Watch
Does anyone here know where to get a nice looking digital watch, I have looked forever for a watch with a nice metal band that is digital. I don't like the ones that stretch to fit over your had as they are very 80's, maybe one that is a bi or tri-fold.
I think a company could make a fortune selling these to geeks who like percise time and need a watch that looks good. The only one I have ever found is http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/72bb/ and it is way to expensive and has much more than I would want in a watch. I need time and date.
