Re:conspicuously absent
I said that the majority of PCs out there are less powerful than a PS2
on what planet "out there"? even 3 years old PCs with good video card are more powerful than PS2 with so called "emotion engine" and another marketing blabla
some links that i quickly googled:
GTA3 - "High resolution textures, enhanced sounds, and accelerated 3D graphics make GTA3 PC look and sound much better than the PS2 version"
Vice City - "As they did last year with Grand Theft Auto 3, Rockstar Games has ported the massive Playstation 2 hit Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to the PC. And as before, the PC version sports better graphics, new mouse controls, MP3 playback, custom skins, and the ability to do quick replays."
and that's not only with GTA series... gaming on PCs simply rocks :-) -

Re:CPU Usage?
My bet is that the big ad was set to a different size in the HTML than it actually is (maybe it was set to 450x515, when it is really 475x530) and so Mozilla has to render it smaller than it really is, which is not a strong point for Mozilla. Try viewing the image alone and shrinking your window so that you get scroll bars and see how there's not as much delay as there is when scrolling down that page.
In IE, I get similar CPU usage. It's probably the ripples-in-water effect used in the Flash ad.
It must detect that I've not got a Flash plugin installed for Mozilla and just displays the next best thing, a poorly-sized image. -
Blade Racers == Micronaut Rocket Tubes ??
This sure reminds me of my favortie Christmas present of 1979, this, although the modern one is so big it must include an expansion set. -
Aww yeah...
Even if I didn't dig the hell out of the mini, I'd watch the series for more Grace Park. =D

You're right - they should do it with the folks playing. These guys had a good idea with a decent presentation - but could use some work.

Nothing traditional about...
This (except for the commercial preceding it). Though I'm not sure what to say about it. A little long, a little hit and miss but at least it's not the same old same old.

Re:Lack of alternatives
Features like software (iTunes, iSync, iCal, iChat, Safari, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Quicktime etc...etc...etc...)
That's stuff that came with your OS -- all OS's offer that generic stuff. You know as well as I do that I'm talking about being able to go to the store and buy software. Like games, for example...
"Photoshop..."
Hardware/software integration that provides a true plug and play experience so you don't have to deal with the damned "Hardware Wizard" from Microsoft whenever you plug in a firewire hard drive or something like that. With OS X, you never get "I see you are trying to add a new hardware device". Rather, you plug the device in and it simply works.
Or, it doesn't work, and nothing happens. Yup, no hardware wizard, just plain nothing. That isn't user-friendly, by any stretch of the imagination.
Also, the hardware feature set among many Macs is far and away pretty impressive. The 12in Powerbook I have has built in Firewire, built in wireless antennas for 802.11g, built in USB, built in ethernet, built in slot loading Superdrive allowing me to burn DVD's, built in support for multiple monitors etc..etc...etc... all in a compact package less than 4lbs with good battery life.
With Apple, you also get thoughtful and well researched design that is completely lacking in the Wintel arena. For instance, the last Wintel laptop I had was a joke compared to this in that the manufacturer placed the fan outlet on the bottom!!!! of the case so that if you were using the laptop on your lap, you blocked the fan output of the laptop thus causing it to overheat. Smart, eh? Or look at the design of the dual G5's. This thing is quiet, fast and easy to work with when adding hardware, and one of the most innovative case designs I have ever seen.
First of all: what possessed you to buy a laptop with a fan on the bottom? That's not only dumb design, but also a dumb purchase.
Second of all, sure, Mac makes pretty hardware. But pretty hardware doesn't justify paying the kind of money they ask for. I have a Shuttle XPC -- it, like the G5, is quiet, fast, easy to work with, and looks cute.
Unlike the G5, though, it only costs about $500 to put one together. The cheapest G5 is $1999. So, I saved about $1499. So, not only can I go to the store and actually find software for my system, but I also have the money to buy it with. -

Link is incorrect?
It points to http://ugo.com/ , not http://www.ugo.com/
Corrected link
On my system using Mozilla Firebird and Opera 7.11 at least -- connecting to the server sans the www gets me a weird error page with the mime type of a GIF image, returned as HTTP 200 OK... not even a 404. Then again they are running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 as a server, so this breakage is probably by design. -

Why Switch to Linux?
Boy oh boy, Linux as a gaming platform... Linux was optimized to outperform in the areas of Software Design (for stability of the kernel) and Server Architectures. I have a partition kicking around whenever I need to do *real* work with C++, and I've used it since Slackware in 1995
But, as a gaming platform, Linux still isn't exactly jumping out at me ... the UI/core apps now need about a half a decade of interface redesign to catch up. For one thing, a Control Panel type app would go a long way towards standardizing the configuration of these beasts. In all, completely giving up Windows for Linux is about as compelling as Switching to a Mac... -

Elmer fuddI dunno I kind of thought with his size, speech impediment and all that maybe Gollum was Elmer Fudd. We haven't seen him around lately and even back then he seemed ready to go around the bend.
A recent interview didn't really give too many clues. It could be him or maybe not.

While we're on the subject...
Might as well mention Morrowind, which went gold last week and is expected in stores late next week. According to the many previews out there, Morrowind looks to be more open-ended and immersive than any other RPG to date. It's only single player, but given the joys of many multiplayer RPGs, that's probably a good thing. In addition to the official site and forums, there's a good RPGPlanet site that collects most relevant information. Look for the water screenshots; they use pixel shading to get some truly impressive effects.

Re:From a non-gamer...This is slightly OT, but am I the only person in the world who actually likes the controllers on the Xbox?
Nope, I like them too, I can play games on the XBox for hours on end with my hands getting all cramped up like they do with those tiny little controllers on the PS2 and GameCube.
Besides, if its a big issue, just buy one of the smaller "S" controllers or any of the 3rd party controllers. The S controller is basically the controller that Microsoft shipped with the Japanese Xbox, since supposedly Japanese people have smaller hands then we do. If you've got tiny hands too, then read about the Xbox S controller here. You can preorder them from EBgames.com for delivery later this month. I'm getting one for when my nephew comes over. He's only 7 and the controllers are a bit big for him.

Nien Nunb to Appear
Apparently, Peter Jackson is an avid Slashdot reader with all the free time on his hands. Having read this story, he decided to add a few hours of Nien Nunb to the director's cut along with Hammerhead and the Jawas. Says Jackson, "The movie was running short and, hopefully, this will give them the added exposure they so richly deserve. Who knows, maybe this story will even be duplicate-posted on Slashdot in 5 or 6 months!"

Re:Deus Ex and Anachronox
Not true! We nominated Anachronox for Best RPG of 2001 at GamePen.
It didn't escape our notice. :-) -
The article is just rubbish!!
Why is this a slashdot story? It's rubbish! Have you read it, here's some of the juvenile going's on: "Amanaman presents one of the more interesting phenomenons in the Star Wars universe, that being creatures that cannot possibly exist. Because I created the theory on evolution, and yes I did, I can tell you...anything with arms this ridiculously long would've been wiped into extinction years ago. Amanaman can't possibly do anything - much less the alleged 'headhunting'...." Seems appropriate for some starwars freaks site, but not Slashdot.

that was terrible
The "interview" with Tolkien and the other Ring-related stories on that site were dreadfully boring. The funniest thing I saw was a smallish picture of Gary Coleman as "Merry".

eFront did the same thing...
Remember the whole eFront fiasco from a few months ago? Well, eFront did the same thing as UGO is trying to do: in order for webmasters to get back to their domain names, they had to forfeit 5 months of backpay, and agree not to sue eFront at any time in the future. As far as I know, a lot of webmasters agreed and signed the contract in order just to get their domains back quickly, as one weekend eFront blocked out all webmasters from updating their sites for "security reasons".
Looks like UGO is on it's way to becoming a member of Pud's list...oh wait, nevermind...Pud has an article that UGO just bought Bla-Bla!. Sheesh! Rough times indeed... -

Also check out "Sigma", from Relic
Sigma is a game being developed by Relic, the studio that created Homeworld (Game of the Year by some accounts, etc, etc.) Anyway if you dig B&W, you might also dig Sigma (when it's out, late this year?) It involves crazy creatures, a B-movie plot, genetic wackiness, a pretty impressive rendering engine, etc. I'm sure the dev team of Sigma has watched B&W closely (it's been in development for about as long), though the gameplay and objectives seem to be different enough. Homeworld cameras and gameplay were great, so I have high hopes for Sigma!
In the words of Relic's CEO, Alex Garden, (who has brushed shoulders with Peter Molyneaux)... "We prefer to think of Sigma as what happens when a geneticist smokes far too much crack."

How does Relic afford to fund a game that has also been something like 3 years in the making? Microsoft dollars. Sierra funded Homeworld. Not sure why MS is backing this one, and say what you want about the evil empire... but they've got money to risk on crazy games like Sigma. And I think that's pretty goddamn cool... -
