Star Trek: Nemesis Gets the Go Signal

PatJensen writes "Star Trek TNG: Nemesis, the 10th Star Trek movie gets the green light from Paramount today. It will be directed by Stuart Baird, who did Executive Decision, US Marshals and Tomb Raider. Looks to be pretty action packed. Digital Domain (LOTR, Titanic) will be doing the SFX. The movie seems to be based around Romulan conflict with the Federation. " Can't be as bad as Insurrection. At least, I hope not. BTW the first movie is out on DVD now and they did a pretty good job with the re-release.

1. star trek: the motion picture. "The crew of the Enterprise is reunited to combat a lethal force field headed toward Earth. Slow, talky, and derivative, somewhat redeemed by terrific special effects and majestic Jerry Goldsmith score; still, mainly for purists." RATING: 2.5 stars.
2. star trek: the wrath of khan. "Kirk and the Enterprise crew must do battle with the nefarious villain of 1967's ``Space Seed'' episode. A bit hokey and pretentious at times, but a likable adventure overall, with nice touches of warmth and humor." RATING: 3 stars.
3. star trek iii: the search for spock. 5. star trek v: the final frontier. "The Enterprise crew takes off on an emergency mission when an apparent madman takes over a distant planet and holds its interstellar ambassadors hostage; his motives, however, turn out to be anything but terroristic. Dramatically shaky trek starts off with a case of the cutes, and gets worse before it (finally) gets better. A weak entry in the series. Shatner's feature-film directing debut; he also shares story credit." RATING: 2 stars.
6. star trek vi: the undiscovered country. "The Enterprise crew is assigned to negotiate truce with Klingon leader, only to fall prey to a trap set by one of his renegade cohorts (Plummer, in a deliciously flamboyant performance). Entertaining saga cowritten by director Meyer. Nimoy helped concoct the story and also executive produced." RATING: 3 stars.
7. star trek: generations. "The old guard gives way to the new, as Capt. Kirk (Shatner) passes the baton to a new Starfleet commander, Capt. Picard (Stewart). Episodic adventure yarn plays like an elongated segment of the Next Generation TV series; not inspired, perhaps, but entertaining just the same, with some impressive special effects. Oddly enough, the weakest segment is the climactic teaming of Picard and Kirk, which seems like a leftover from an old Saturday matinee serial. Whoopi Goldberg appears unbilled as Guinan." RATING: 3 stars.
8. star trek: first contact. "Capt. Picard lives his worst nightmare as the villainous Borg (who almost overtook him in a two-part TV episode) land on earth with domination their goal. The solution: the crew travels back in time to 2063 to make sure a cockeyed scientist (Cromwell) fulfills his role in history with a precedent-setting rocket flight. Story goes on a bit, following two concurrent threads, but series fans will have no complaints. Krige is a standout as the seductive Borg Queen. Feature directing debut for Frakes, better known as Riker." RATING: 3 stars.
9. star trek: insurrection. "Good entry in the long-running series has the crew befriending the eternally youthful residents of a Shangri-La-like planet whose existence is threatened by the vengeful Ru'afo (Abraham). Picard (Stewart) even has a dalliance with one of the women there (Murphy). Reliably entertaining for Star Trek fans." RATING: 3 stars.

Yes, it's random if you listen to Leonard Maltin (a particularly poor movie critic). But if you ask the average Star Trek fan, they'll tell you that the Wrath of Khan was a LOT better than The Motion Picture (most of my friends can't sit through ST:1, but we all love ST:2), that The Voyage Home was MUCH more fun to watch than The Search for Spock, and that the Undiscovered Country was a heads and shoulders above The Final Frontier. I don't even understand how Maltin can put these movies so close together in their ratings - 2, 4, and 6 really captured the feel of the original series, with camraderie and action, while 1, 3, and 5, were like stupid versions of the Next Generation, trying to be intelligent but completely failing.

That scene sucked. In Star Trek V, he said he knew he would die alone. Checking "Generations" again . . . nope, Picard was standing right there when he died.

Then Shatner has to go and write some stupid books about it, bring Kirk back to life after "Generations" took place, then "die alone" (as he was supposed to) while having the arrogance to destroy the entire Borg collective, then writing another book after "Insurrection", bring back Kirk AGAIN, and saying "no, I didn't destroy the Borg, that was just a small section of the collective". Uggg.

Generally based on Maltin's ratings, here is the empirical formula to a successful new Star Trek movie:

• Directed by Frakes.
• Story and executive production by Nimoy.
• Keep Shatner the heck away from the set.
• Keep it fast and not too much dialog.
• Bring in Whoopi again.
• Throw in some Klingons and Borg.
• Music by Jerry Goldsmith.
• What about Q?
• And at last but not least, for the last half of the movie, turn it into a comedy where the crew goes back to the 20th Century with the help of dolphins and Lassie to help save Wil Wheaton's career by coercing him not to accept the role in the series. Suddenly, a disruption in the time-space continuoum causes Richard Simmons to suddenly replace Wil Wheaton in all the series and movies, and the whole thing was just an aerobic workout video to begin with.

The even-odd thing didn't start until about ST 5... people started to ask "how can we avoid the bad ones?"

But really, the 1st ST movie wasn't that bad (talk about new frontiers! The 1st one could have been made a dozen different ways after all), and 3 was mostly a shock to the purists (A main cast member dies? And not be resurrected by a time warp thingie! Blasphemy!!!) I enjoyed both. Ricardo Montalban was just a very hard villain to measure up to in the later movies, and that's why some of them were panned (until the Borg showed up and became the new really nasty villain).

In other words, when people quote the even/odd thing, ignore 'em, watch the flicks and judge for yourself. Here's hoping the new one is great.

My TOS bias really comes out here, although I found FC to be a very entertaining film. It was the most accessable of the TNG based films for non-TNG fans.

Generations was a rotten TV episode translated to the big screen. The plot was weak, the script was worse (coudln't they rewrite the opening scene after Nimoy and Kelly took a pass on this piece of shit), assumed the audience had seen every episode of TNG (who were the Klingon chicks with the tits?), and killed Kirk off in a rather lame manner. I had no problem with the man dying, but he desrved better.

I would have ranked Generations dead last, but
Shatner did his best to do his worst.

I always figured that "die alone" thing was about dying without a love interest, but I'm only a half-time Trekkie, so what would I know.

But, one thing I am quite sure of, anyone that has ever actually met Shatner say that he is the most arrogant asshole you could ever care to meet. I suppose becoming the "most important sci-fi captain" of your generation at the young age he started as Captain Kirk could do that to you. But, my guess would be that he just listened a little too closely to scripts and books that called Captain Kirk a legend, and forgot that William Shatner was the real person, a bad actor with a truly shitty talking voice.

Shatner brought Kirk back to life because the way they had him die in "Generations" was awful. It was really a slap in the face. I mean, he falls off a bridge? That's the best the writers could come up with? I really found this appalling. I understand that it was difficult for them to write a story around the transition from TOS to TNG, but "Generations" was pretty bad, and the way Kirk died added insult to injury. I haven't read any of Shatner's books but if he wanted to bring Kirk back just to give him a better death then IMO he has that right. Maybe the cycle of the TNG movies will be crap -> good -> crap -> good (Generations -> First Contact -> Insurrection -> Nemesis?). One can only hope.

Another questions: Why not incorporate any of the Voyager or DS9 cast? I missed the end of DS9 but from what I gather they pretty much tied up all the loose ends at the end, but Voyager was left wide open. So why not?

Most people will go see the Trek films regardless of the even/odd factor. I think it's just an observation that seems to fit amongst most people. The odd numbered ones are disappointing. I loved ST:TMP but it did have it's flaws.

Wow, that's quite diffrent than I'd rank them. Though I've always found TNG and DS9 to be my favorites. I rank em something lke this:

Even though I always prefered the 24th century Trek series, 6 tops my list because it was just that undeniably good it suffered from none of the acting problems in many of the others, it had the drama, the plot, and wasn't hokey (although a certain amount of lightness is of course acceptable or even desirable, some of the others were over the top).

As for The Wrath of Kahn, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? It was okay but I have the same criticizm you did of Generations with Lursa and B'Etor. Kahn was in ONE episode. At least the "Klingon chicks with the tits" were recurring villans. They were in probably half a dozen episodes. Look back 30 years before any of the movies were made. Who were the recurring villans in TOS that you wouldn't have to have seen every episode to know? Harry Mudd? Now there's a frightening villan!

Next, I've got ST1. I dunno, I loved that one. Especially where they find out what V'Ger was. That was just great. The diffrence between it and the rest of the TOS movies (Except 6) seemed to me that it wasn't trying to be just liek the good old days of the series. This was a crew that was thrust back together for a crisis, not just another episode with better effects.

Next, for Generations, I liked this one. I liked how they included the Enterprise B, I liked everything except for the fact that the villan didn't seem larger than life liek a villian in a Trek feature film should. (Though he did remind me of my JROTC Colonel, so that was fun). As for how kirk died, yeah, it lacked drama. But it allowed "private time" between the two captains so that there could be closure. I also loved (and was probably shocked the same way TOS fans were at the end of TWoK) how the Enterprise is destroyed.

I had TWoK next, and it would have been higher, but really, I never thought Kahn was a very impressive villan. Strike that. He is impressive. But not make-a-movie-about-it impressive. But despite that, it did make for some very entertaining trek, especially on the surface of the dust planet and the starship battle.

The Voyage home was next, because it was light and entertaining and just better than the other two remaining films.

The Search For Spock was lame. Like the bad episodes where they over use a plot device like the transporter to make the crew into children or animals or transport them into a parallel universe. Just hokey.

As for Insurection, I would have had no problem with it, if it had been an episode. It feels like an episode. I dunno, I just feel that the films should be important. Something BIG shoudl be on the line. Insurection just had this unremarkable away mission episode feel to it. Nothing wrong with it, but it should never have been a feature film.

Then we have 5... oh dear, 5.
What can I say about a film where they go to the edge of the galaxy to try and find God? I mean, there's really nothing I can say about... that digit that I shall not mention because it hath been dirtyed by Shatner's directing...
I'm looking forward to Nemesis. I always thought the Romulans v. Next Gen was a movie that needed to be made, but after the Dominion War in DS9, I figured that would never happen. Speaking of which, I'd LOOOVE to see a DS9 film. I didn't particularly like Voyager and I haven't had time to watch Enterprise, but I liked DS9 as much as TNG. I loved how dark it was I loved the characters. And I loved how the universe got turned on it's head by the Dominion War. Too bad it looks like it will never see a film ):

Well, in the original script, Kirk was shot by Soran (the bad guy) with some kind of phaser weapon. I think he died after a climactic fight between Picard and Soren. Not sure why they changed it, but it wouldn't have been any better. What a stupid way to kill one of my heroes. :(

I know these are just books, but I really think this is the same thing Star Trek has always suffered from - lack of continuity. On the rare occasion things don't wrap themselves up perfectly within 60 minutes, any attempt at a story arc seems forced.

On the up side, you can watch the episodes (or the movies) in any order... you don't have to worry about back-story.

I'll accept that Kirk's death was handled wrong, and that Shatner could bring him back at least in a book to give him a proper death would be OK. But doing it with a suicide attack that takes out the entire Borg collective and then bringing him back for more books is incredibly arrogant, espically being that with VERY few exceptions, Trek books are not cannon.

yeah, I remembered that after I posted (doh!) but still, Spock starts the movie missing, and even at the end he's not himself yet (I mean, Spock in a hotel bathrobe with a dopey 'huh?' look on his face? Yuck!)... I think that's why people may not like ST3. It ties the series together, but isn't a wham bang movie by itself.

The same movie vs. movie comparisons come up in discussion of Bond films; and they're about as relevant... don't watch the ones ya don't like (like ST5 or Moonraker... either way, ouch!)

Well, as I (think I) said, I haven't read any of his books myself. But that does sound like a really dumb thing for him to do. Taking out the entire collective? That's so dumb. Makes it difficult for anyone to take that book seriously, I'd guess. Taking out all the borg in the sector, ok, that's perfectly legit in star trek land. But to attempt to remove a major galactic player from the Star Trek world is a mistake.

actually i seem to remember Riker warning an alien once that with the phaser set to full power with a wide dispersal area, it would vaporize half the building they were standing in... but i guess its more dramatic to have your heroes be seemingly overwhelmed by the enemy
buti think you're over-analyzing the use of phasers on TOS, Gene Roddenberry once said that the show was like a western in space, so the phasers were used more like 6-shooters, but whatever, just my take on it

I also think it made the first, the Vger story, one of the best, but I'm evidently in the minority. I always did like the cosmic stories better than most. Who wants to see little men lift little weights?

Then the Borg come in a completely underwhelming story.

Then not much happens until Insurrection, which was a dumb story, but had a cute female guest star.

It's not about odd/even movies, it's about PRIME NUMBERS! Have a little glimpse into the future:

Trek 7: 'The Spacefight Club'
This series will be composed almost entirely of starship dogfights in space, with some minor plot thrown in to appease the critics. Alien hottie flesh will be in abudance.

Trek 9: 'What Starship Captains Want'
Female and 'sensitive' male starfleet officers will particpate in a romantic comedy set entirely inside Starfleet headquarters. There will occasionally be futuristic matte paintings in the background depicting a futuristic earth, but there won't be any action or fight scenes.

Trek 13: 'Starfleet Tactics'
Series written by Tom Clancy. This one will be a little more 'intellectual' than previous Treks, but will focus on political machinations, espionage, technical and scientific detail, and large-scale starship battles. Action will not be plentiful, but it will be frequent, and well written. Critics will hail it as a 'sleeper hit'.

Treks 14-16:
Will nearly bankrupt Paramount due to the casting of David Spade, Tom Green, and Britney Spears as starship captains.

Trek 17:
Will be filmed using a combination of live action, full-scale starship models that really explode, and state-of-the-art quantum computer-based animation. The series will depict a life-or-death struggle in space and on Earth for the future of humanity, with generous dashes of action, sex, comedy, and gratuitous explosions. Due to the damages incurred wiping out the City of San-Francisco with a neutron explosion for the grand finale of the series, Paramount will go bankrupt.

It's the computer game syndrome. In reality, the slightest gust would disrupt a "magical spellcaster". A 10-foot tall, 4000-lb ogre who can lift 10 tons and swings a 200-lb sword at the caster would not "whif" for 10 points of damage, sorry.

That that idiocy is making it into the movies is kind of sad.

Of course, it's possible materials science has produced such indestructable, but light, materials for shipping containers.

So light, in fact, that they should be used as armor, too.

But that's another problem.

Presumably, this movie will be post-Voyager, so they should have a massive high-tech upgrade with the armor plating, the 26th century holo emitter, the high speed transwarp information that Voyager, all alone, picked up but couldn't capitalize on, and so on.

I don't see why the Romulans would be anything but a bunch of Taliban to the Federation.

Nononononono. The best was in the Final Frontier when Kirk calls in the photon torpedo arclight on the gang and "god" and they survive by jumping behind "big rocks."

Oh the pain. The pain. As Dr. Smith would say. I managed to tenuously suspend disbelief for over an hour and then it shattered like a glass goblin. Just proved to me that another thing William Shatner can't do is direct.

Your comment about Generations rekindled a thought I had immediately after seeing it: Good god why couldn't they have made the TNG finale "All Good Things.." be a motion picture, and in fact I always try to place "All Good Things" into the Trek Movie Debate every chance I get.

That film was made by Simon "I haven't got a fucking clue as to how to edit a close-in action scene" West, the luminary genius behind "Con Air".

Note that he's scheduled to direct the feature-film adaptation of "The Prisoner" as well. God help fans of the original series.

He, Akiva Goldsman, and Nora Ephron should all be made part of the cast of the next "Survivor" series so that they can't do any more damage in Hollywood for at least a year or so.

I beg to differ. Insurrection was very good. It made sense. It was entertaining. And watching Data's head float around was cool :-)

If you want a bad recent ST movie, try First Contact. Absolutely destroyed the Borg mythos in one fell swoop.

first contact was a good movie, and it did not destroy anything about the borg...they still exist you know...each cube is a hive and each hive has a "Queen" this just so happened to be the hive that Picard was captured and assimilated into before the entire federation fleet was destroyed at the battle of "wolf(can't remember the name)"

Insurrection was a hyped up episode of TNG. To me if I'm going to go see a movie and shell out $10, I expect it to be better than the re-runs I can catch at 3am.

If this one is better than an episode, I will be happy with it, otherwise.

Sort of. The only misconception you've got is that *all* of the borg is one singular hive, with a single queen as the "avatar" of that hive mind.

I've got to wonder what makes Humans so facinating for the Borg, though... maybe it's that "evolve into higher beings" thing...

The whole idea of centralization in the collective, on any level (either for the entire collective, parts of the collective, or individual ships), simply does not fit with how the Borg were presented in TNG.

One exception I will make for this is the transwarp gateways seen in the final episode of Voyager. Those things would likely take an awful lot of resources to build, so it makes sense that even the Borg only have a few of them. Of course, Voyager has other problems with the Borg (and that episode in particular), such as uber-torpedos that destroy cubes in one hit and invincible armor plating. Ho hum, whoppie.

actualy, in TNG no one knew what the borg were like, only that you could walk around on the ship until you were percived as a threat and that they could adapt to your Phaser.other than that they were pretty mysterious. even now there internal dynamics are a little foggy......pluse look at wht Data's brother had proven, along with the Hugh experiment, that borg can become independant and command themselfs in small groups independant of the central mind. Just because the Queen died does not mean that the borg Die, it just means now the universe will be filled with billions of rouge borg.

First off, ST sucks in general. Hey, I'm a fan, but let's be honest... go back and watch the movies again. They're not that great (and the episodes are hit and miss too).

That said, I thought ST8 was, for the most part, well done. I didn't like the concept of the Borg queen, her fascination with Picard, or her attempted seduction of Data (very silly, IMHO).

But, those were my only complaints. The plot was actually fairly interesting and it was nice to see a movie on time travel that didn't invlove going to the present!

So, I rank ST8 a close second to ST4. And ST9 was better than expected... yeah it was bad, but it also had a decent plot (for ST). Besides, what do you expect for an odd ST movie? My ranking:

Insurrection was definately one of the best of the ST movies. In an age when movies are steadily moving more and more towards gratuitous sex, violence, and language, Insurrection was refreshingly clean. It had humor, a clean romance, an intriguing premise, and a great mystery with a surprise ending. Call me a prude, or a far-left-winger, but IMO we need more movies like Insurrection -- PG-13 and R ratings are FAR too predominant right now, and I think that reflects negatively on the direction our society is taking.

I honestly hope that Nemesis follows the example of Insurrection, rather than choosing the "easy" path and going PG-13 or (gasp!) R. It is almost always nothing less than laziness on the part of the director if they claim a given movie can't be rated PG. Good scripting, directing, and editing can always result in a winning PG movie -- look at the Star Wars films if you don't believe me.

Insurrection is definitely one of the better movies, because it is an extended TNG episode. I liked the movie because I liked the show. Funny how that works. I would prefer if they made more movies like that rather than trying to make them appeal to people who didn't watch the show.

Also, Star Trek V was excellent for the first hour, maybe even 2/3 of the film. It's just the last bit that sucks, and that's all people seem to remember.

I agree with the original poster - insurrection was the best of the lot as far as TNG movies go. Generations was so-so and First Contact could have been so much better but wasn't. Insurrection was great because it had all the stuff I really liked about Trek in it. The human story was great. I'm not sure what First Contact was trying to be? It wasn't a good action movie and didn't have enough edge to be a good 'Good Vs. Evil' movie either.

Believe it or not, sometimes movies can have subtler themes than "blow up stuff" or "good vs. evil".

The most interesting part of First Contact is Picard's obsession with the Borg. You've also got the Borg's "temptation" of Data, and the deconstruction of the myth around Zephram Cochrane...it's a psychologically heavy movie, with a heaping side order of action. Good stuff.

Of course good movies can be rated PG. Great movies, on the other hand, tend to deal with life, and life is frequently R-rated. Could Schindler's List have been a PG movie? The network that aired it on television didn't think so.

I have to agree. "V" was pretty bad - none of the old crew, no Federation ships, Klingons, phasers or anything, just these dumb aliens running around dressed as humans. Spock coulda whupped the whole fleet of'em in ten minutes.

It was really hard to see how it even was a Trek movie, but at least it was on TV and I didn't have to pay for a ticket.

Funny.. that's my exact feeling for III. I loved the whole returning home damaged, then stealing the Enterprise (ok, so the clunking noises in the Excelsior were cheesy), and finally blowing the enterprise up to save their lives (damn fine effects there). But once they were on the ground on the Genesis planet, and finished watching the Enterprise burn up in the atmosphere... it just goes down the toilet. Trying not to picture Christopher Lloyd in his other parts everytime he speaks in the movie is kinda funny though.

I also think that James Horner's music, especially during the stealing the enterprise bit (and all of ST II) is the best ST music. Don't get me wrong, I like Goldsmith's music a lot too, but I think Horner outdoes Goldsmith. I own the sountracks for 2, 3, 5, 6, Gen, and FC. 2 and 3 are my favorites.

According to a statement made by Wil Wheaton at www.wilwheaton.nethe will have at least a small role in the movie. wilwheaton.net is down at the moment so here is what I can recal from his comments. When they taped The Weakest Link episdoe Wil made a comment to Levar Burton about wanting to come back and give the character some closure, but that he didn't feel like Rick Berman and the other producers liked him. Apparently Levar went to bat for Wil because they decided to give him at least a small role. According to Wil he has been fitted for a uniform and has possesion of a script with the confidential stamped in red on the top every page. I would provide links to wil's site, but for some reason Wil has had to put the moose back out front again.

One RUMOR that I have heard bandied about is that there is going to be a wedding and that he may be a guest at the wedding... When last we saw Wesley Crusher, he was on the verge of becoming a full-fledged superhero. He had the ability to freeze time with his mind, and act independent of it. Before that he was able to move the ship across the universe with his mind. Now, if we're going to see a whole Q movie, where Wesley completes his evolution into Q, fine. There's plenty of back story to play with (explaining Q's interest in the Enterprise, Picard as Wesley's father-figure, etc.) but I can't see how Wesley could make a cameo. Now, wrap Will in Romulan makeup, and there you have something. Of course, Tom Paris will have to make an appearance to punch Will for hitting on Roxanne...oops, there I go confusing reality and TV again.

Which is why he has just a 5 minute cameo. A lot of people hated it enough when he saved the ship regularly, let alone able to resolve the entire movie plot with a word. I liked Wesley despite the way he was nearly ruined, but if Wesley goes with the crew after the wedding scene I'll walk out (unless he has relinquished the powers). You can't logically develop and sustain a plot when a character can instantly resolve it at any moment.

Nonetheless I'm eager to see Wesley again. Does he have some interesting journeys to share with us? Has he given up his powers after many, many "years" of time travel? Has he decided to settle down and lead a normal life? Where is the Traveller who introduced him to "new planes of existence"? Has he had contact with Dr. Crusher and the crew or is he dropping in uninvited? Will there be an explanation for his changed appearance? (Wil Wheaton is no longer a teenager, obviously.)

I don't buy into the bad reviews I've seen floating around. I can't wait.

Intrestingly, "The Motion Picture" was supposed to be a pilot for a new series. Then "Star Wars" was released and the Star Trek people we're worried that the popularity of Star Wars would overshadow Star Trek, so they rewrote the series pilot as the movie. Many of the other scripts they had written up to that point were eventually turned into TNG episodes.

I wouldn't be surprised. Even though Mr Stuart has gotten faim and acclaim for bringing back Star Trek (he basically launched an entire industry with that classically-trained voice: "engage"), he is a rather serious actor, and serious actors like to take on diverse, challenging, creatively envigorating roles.

Unfortunitely for the rest of us, playing the same space captain for 10+ years kind of takes the "diverse, challenging, creatively envigorating" out of it.

BTW: I caught his Prospero (that's from Shakespeare's Tempest) a couple years back in NYC. Brilliant. If anyone ever has a chance to see Patric Stuart perform anything live (esp Shakespeare), take it. His stage presence is unreal. I really hope he finds more projects to work on in the future.

All of the films are out on DVD (and have been for a while), they're just not worth buying because they contain no bonus features to speak of. Strange, considering Trek is a franchise that specifically caters to a crowd/fanbase that would love to see behind the scenes, technical, and "making of" documentaries.

I'm dumb, and forgot to mention this in my original post. All the films came a couple years ago, without a big deal release or anything special. Interestingly enough, the new version of ST:TMP hasn't been available at many standard locations like Target, K-mart or Walmart (at least around here in Souther California).

Being able to watch the whole movie instead of just a chunk of the middle of the screen is a pretty compelling bonus feature.

Being able to watch the movie several times without it looking worse every time is a nice bonus feature.

Being able to fit all the movies into the space half of them would consume on VHS is a nice bonus feature.

Hell, just the difference in picture quality is nice, if you've got a 50" TV.

But as another poster pointed out, it's an even-numbered trek movie. Everyone hates the odd-numbered ones (the first one was particularly bad, though I haven't seen the new DVD released) and are generaly considered cursed. OTOH, even numbered ones are generaly considered great. Number 4 (often known as "the one with the whales") is one of the top 100 money making movies of all time. One suggestion for getting around this problem is that Paramount should write two scripts, then throw out the first one.

I've heard rumors to the effect that this is the last planned TNG movie, at least based on the fact that Patrick Stewart no longer wants to be in that role (not that he doesn't dislike it, but he wants to return to stage work). Same rumors suggest that this isn't necessarily the end of the Trek series of movies, and future movies may either take place in the mid-series of DS9 or Voyager, or possibly an aglomeration of plots that would occur after Voyager returns.

Anyone else heard similar? They *are* just internet rumors, after all...

I think it would be cool to have the next film with the DS9 crew. Thee were a lot of stories left open. Sisko coming back. A whole new relationship with the Changlings. The whole Gamma quadrant. Lots of material.

I don't know what Voyager could do. They got home. End of story. Thank goodness. 7 of 9 aside, I didn't like the show.

what i think would make a great movie (if they did it right) would be after voyager gets home, how they deal with the new technology that they brought back with them. do they go after the borg with it, do they destroy the new technology to preserve their temporal prime directive... could be intresting, as long as it didn't have as cheap of an ending as the voyager series had.

They're already talking about making a movie based on the Enterprise series. TOS, TNG, and Enterprise were about exploring. Voyager was about coming home, and DS9 was about gaurding the wormhole. Both Voyager and DS9 have finished their plot arches. I'd be more interested in a DS9 movie over Voyager because what story is left to tell in Voyager? Any movie done with Voyager could also be done with TOS, TNG, and/or Enterprise.

While I hate to see the TNG stuff die, it is about time. All of the characters are getting pretty old (its getting harder and harder to be convinced that Data is an ageless android) and such. Maybe they'll do an Enterprise movie next, hopefully without the crappy intro music. I don't think I'd mind a movie off DS9 or Voy, but the problem is that people have already started to forget about them. It would take a lot of effort to get them back on their feet. As to the last episode of Voy, I thought it was FAR better then the teary eyed, sing songs of hope, slow pan across everyone's face crappy ending of DS9.

This one has been floating around for a while. Stewart has for ages wanted to go back to stage acting. And I must say, he is a damn good stage actor. I have seen him perform at UCLA when I was much younger. Back before I was really even a trekie. He does do it in his spare time some, but I know he is much more interrested in stage acting then doing startrek movies with horrible plots.

I don't think the lenght of a show being off air matters much. If I'm not mistaken the original Star Trek ended and the movie came out years later. DS9 is a better candidate than VGR IMO but i'd rather see a VGR movie. Aside from TNG, VGR was my favorite series. Enterprise is growning on me too. Trip is cool.

Sisko coming back? Please, let a major character "die" for once in Star Trek. It's already becoming like Marvel Comics with characters dying in one episode/movie and making reappearances in others. Technology is already trivalized in the entire series (writers just invent a whole string of words), don't let the relationships be too (oh, he died. maybe some mystical energy being will bring him back or some weird series of events). IMO, the one last thing that Star Trek has going for it is that it focuses on developing characters.

Sisko didn't die in the tv show. In the series finale, he did throw himself and Gul Dukat off a cliff but the Prophets saved him and took him ack to their realm to learn.

I agree that the concept of death has been trivialized in comics and many tv shows, but I don't think this is one of those.

From what I remember of the series, Sisko did "die" in the sense that he can never come back. The Prophets forewarned him that his relationship with his girlfriend (forget her name at the moment) would end in sadness, and this is what they were alluding to. Personally, I and a lot of other people thought that it was very similiar to Babylon 5's ending where the main character is taken away by some higher ordered being after making a great sacrifice leaving behind a wife and child (where there were numerous other similarities between the 2 shows in the end), but oh well.

Of course the movies won't stop. It just remains to see if they'll continue the stories, or do some kind of "reboot".

...that if they're bringing Janeway and Wesley in (now, if the rumours are true, why did they make her an admiral so soon?), and considering TPTB apparently want to do something to permit the Data character to exit, why not bring in some other characters for further closure and whatnot?

Like, why not bring back Chief O'Brien? He was part of TNG, too, like Wesley. And then, if this is really the last TNG-cast movie and if TPTB want to keep a Trek movie franchise, why not bring back, say, Lt. Nog, and some other cast members from DS9 and/or VOY?

(Yes, Nog made it to Lt. Watch the DS9 finale again.)

For future movies, why not create a composite cast, like "the best of" from DS9, VOY, even the ones from TNG that want to stick around?

IIRC, it was either TVH or TUC...probably TVH, as I know they didn't do the FX for TFF (and that was one of the complaints I remember hearing leveled against that movie).

Yes Rick Berman made that comment among another stupid remark. He said that since ILM was working on Episode 1 he didn't want ST to be done by the unit B. Of course that's totally ridiculous, there is no A and B team. Not that Insurrection had terrible FX but the production went screwy, like changing the ending at the last possible minute and of course the great effort to create the FX for it.

ILM last FX for ST movie was First Contact, here are the ILM supervisors: The Voyage Home was supervised by Michael Lantieri if I remember right, Undiscovered Country by Scott Farrar, Generations by John Knoll, Bill George and Dave Carson, and First Contact by John Knoll and George Murphy. Of course other facilities and supervisor were involved.

Worst director ever

This guy has directed some of the worst movies I have ever seen. They don't even have the redeeming value of being campy. I left Executive Decision in a rage. Not because I was out $6, but because I lost 1 hour my life. Just gone; nothing to show for it.

And this guy did Tomb Raider? Another candidate for worst movie of all time.

If this guy remains in charge, Nemesis is going to suck. I'm really surprised that he can still get work. Someone has got to realize that not even the American public can stomach his crap.

Tomb Raider is no where near close to the worst movie of all time. Remember Battlefield Earth? I think this review sums up how movies can still be made by poor directors. They just have to tell the companies at least I didn't direct Battlefield Earth. (Yes, that is an almost quote from the review.)

Of course, Star Trek alternates between "movies that are Star Trek" and "Star Trek that happens to be a movie." And that means that X will be like "First Contact", "The Undiscoveredy Coutnry", "The Wrath of Khan", and all the other even-numbered movies.

I liked Insurrection a lot too...but I think that the popularity of a Star Trek is determined by space battles (Though even Space Battles couldn't save ST5, or "Star Trek V: The Wrath of God". Think about it.

Everyone loves ST2, ST6, ST7 (kinda), and ST8. I don't know how the even number rule even TRIES to apply to ST4...

Personally? I rank them this way: ST2,ST3,ST6,ST9,ST7,ST1,ST4,ST8,ST5. What can I say? It seems like everyone seems to forget Star Trek III when they say "This movie sucks!" or "This movie rocks!". It's got your space battles, cocky Kirk, fistfights with Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon, subterfuge at Starfleet HQ, and even Yellow Alerts in Space Dock!

Trek IV was the most commercially successful of the entire series. It's still the movie with the most mainstream popularity.

Watching it now... it's so eighties, yes. It's like a cross between Ferris Bueller and Star Trek. :)

The last thing in the world we could want to see is Wil Wheaton's career suffer. We need a petition to urge the producers of this future flop not to hire Wil Wheaton. After reading his website and responses to questions on Slashdot, I started to really like this guy and learned that he is not the dweeb I once imagined. We all know this movie will be a boring morality play where the Prime Directive will be violated during a temporal distortion caused by Data's emotion chip malfunctioning after having a "human" moment with Jorde's visor in the privacy of the holodeck.

However, I hope every scene is filled with Brent Spinner. After that "Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back" album, he deserves to spend the rest of his life having to listen to plot flaws while signing autographs for socially-retarded Acne cream test subjects. Also, I hope that they make Marina Sirtis cover up. At her present age, they must be bouncing off her knees now.

All those fans who have read the leaked script say it stinks to high-heaven. I read the synopsis and it sounds REALLY BAD. I mean CLONING? They set out to try and reach Wrath of Khan, but they blew it by not having a good bad-guy, I mean bring back someone of merit from the show for godsakes. I hope you're trolling. The appeal of the DVD is not only in the quality of the film, but in the scene access and ability to pack on extras that couldn't be easily integrated with a VHS copy, such as director/actor commentary, multiple angles (for you porn fans out there) and language selection.

I'm not shocked, really, but surprised. You've been able to watch a movie whenever you want for the last 20 years with VHS. That's nothing new. While I understand that some people don't care about features, it really is one of the main reasons DVD is popular.

No Star Trek could be any worse than 5 was. The one that starts off in the desert and procedues to the galactic core in a search for "God". That is the only Star Trek movie that I won't even pause on if I come to it flipping through channels. Although now that I have a TIVO I find I don't do near as much channel surfing as I used to.

Hmm I tend to concur. Remember once saying, "it can't be as bad as Star Trek V!" At least 5 had one funny line: "What does God need with a Starship?" There was nothing funny about Insurrection (OK, DATA going nuts was actually really cool, but otherwise it was excessively lame).

And with respect to another crappy odd-numbered trek, I found it interesting that, in an interview on John Stewart's short lived late-night talk show immediately prior to the release of Generations and Tank Girl, Malcom McDowell would only allow Stewart to talk about Tank Girl, not "the other movie."

We can only hope that the odd-even thing continues to play out.

Then of course theres the TOS plot line: At some point they need to go down to the planet to find out whats going on. Kirk, Spock and Bones go left, security go right, you hear a scream. Command crew run to security officers. One of the security officers is on the ground. Doctor studies him. "He's dead Jim." DA DA!

Captain looks at the living officer. "How did it happen?"
"(something came out of there and attacked, a strange plant blew up in his face, he was run through by a large runnaway commidor 64.. the more rediculous the better)" Spock looks up from the tricorder he's been studiing.

This is where the plot diverges. Either some or all of them are taken captive or something infects one of the command crew, THEN some or all of them are taken captive. Almost always, something will prevent them from returning to the ship Usually because they've been taken captive at some point). Kirk and Spock come up with some rediculously funny way to get out, and aprehend the person/people responsible for whatever happened. The episode ends with Kirk making some comment, Bones making some snide remark about it, Spock either entering into a point counterpoint with bones, or quoting the bible, and Kirk smiling and making another comment, this time either about the "innate goodness of humanity" or making polite fun of Spocks comment.

C'mon...let's not beat up on Insurrection. First of all, most people who go to see Star Trek films are a self-selected audience. We'll go see any Star Trek movie because it's as obligatory as filing your taxes every year. Anything after First Contact that didn't have as much action was bound to get criticized, and Insurrection centered around a theme that has produced some of the best episodes of TNG, "something rotten in the federation". Just my opinion.

No seriously, nudity in most commercial American movies always seems like something that is put in there to score cheap points, yet it is always limited to that it wont suffer in the ratings, which I guess is why it makes it look stupid and unfitting.

As someone who likes Sci-Fi and Star Trek, but is NOT a trekkie, I'd like to note that the even numbered Trek movies are good, and the odd ones are not that good (I won't say "bad", but they could be better).

3: A lame excuse to bring Spock back
4: Whales. Time Travel. Spock using colorful metaphors. Cool
5: Great Barrier? Lame

Yeah, every time I see the guy, I could swear that he's a romulan..probably also some bigshot in the vulcan government consitering noone knows what romulans look like yet.
The problem with having a movie with the Temporal Cold war, nomatter how cool that would be..is that the guy (if you choose to believe him) clames to have come from 900 years in the (Enterprise timeline) future. That would mean 800 years for TOS and I think 725 for Next Gen... Keep it up though, and we should catch up with the temporal cold war in (real timeline) about Twenty Years during the production of Startrek: We Ran Out of Damn Names

The thing about a temporal cold war is that it can be fought in many difference centuries at once. The guy may be from the 29th century, but that doesn't mean he's not operating in the 24th century, as well as Ancient Byzantium.

Still, the two best Trek movies (II and VI) had no time travel whatsoever, and I hope X follows that example.

Star Trek III - The search for spock. It had some good moments but overall kinda dull. Not bad, but not great

Star Trek IV - Okay, the environmentalism was layed on thick, but overall a very different style from the other movies (much more humor), and quite a bit of fun

Star Trek V - Today red shirted ensigns we are going to go find God on some funky planet in the middle of nowhere. Set phasers on CRAP!

Start Trek VI - My personal favorite. Lots of good drama between Federation and the Klingons. The big fairwell for most of the original cast.

Star Trek VII - a crossover between the old and new, and the movie clearly suffered for trying to force that.

Star Trek VIII - We get to see the old federation, a borg trying to seduce Data, and overall a fun and action packed movie.

Star Trek VIX - Ummmm.. what was this movie again. I know I saw it, but I don't recall it having anything worth remembering. Something about somebody rebelling I think but I forget.

So, back to an even number and so we can reasonably assume it will be good. It seems like they screw up, and then work hard to get the next one right. Then they rest on their laurels and screw up again.

I know you have a boner for SFX companies that use Linux, but Digital Domain only did a few FX shots for LOTR. To list LOTR as one of "their" SFX films is a bit much. Here's a quote directly from lordoftherings.net:

One might note, to those not famaliar with Peter Jackson or Weta FX, that Weta is Peter Jacksons company.

Weta was established to do the CG for Heavenly Creatures, arguably Jackson's first non-low-budget gore movie. Next was The Frighteners, which heavily used CG and Weta was awarded for its skills.

Anyway. I kinda know coming from NZ and having Weta FX (and for that matter, Jackson) 5 minutes down the road.

Because, for those of you who don't know, Spiner is getting quite old, and as data has to look ilke he doesn't age, it's a hell of a lot of makeup there . . .

You could always have Data involved in some horrible, disfiguring accident (Say, getting shot in the face with a Romulan disruptor), necessitating that he be repaired. This could be used either to give Spiner a different look, or allow another actor to play the role.

They could also pick up the thread from Insurrection, where the Borg queen gave him human skin. They could have Data re-create this procedure and give himself a new skin, which is then subject to aging.

If you look right below the ST 'review' you'll see one for 13 Ghosts, (which claims its good - as if that wasn't enough evidence to show its full of it)... but also it claims that:

"a Great finale where Maggie, Rafkin, and Kalina try to save Bobby from a glass elevator that is rigged to explode and destroy the house."

Well... after seeing the movie, I must have missed that part. Especially since "Kalina" died....

Hey, I was thinking the same thing....his whole ST club was based on the idea of a space station called Nemesis and he did have a script and some cgi stuff he had done on computer. He even designed a special uniform.

That movie was great. I don't know who was the most twisted person in that movie - the woman who wore her Star Trek uniform while she served on the Whitewater jury or the guy who built the "working" version of Pike's wheelchair.

Some other things of note -

1. Nothing is more indicative to me of the end of the Dot.com era that many comments in this venue, supposedly composed of serious internet nerds, support the idea of Wesley Crusher being written INTO a Star Trek movie. Today, for me, the Internet as we once new it finally died.

2. While the 3rd movie generally sucked, it does contain what I think is William Shatner's greatest moment of over acting. When Kirk's son is killed, Kirk's reaction is greater than the actually struggle in which his son was killed. It's very funny and worth checking out again if you get a chance. Watch it and you'll see how the opening scene, when the mother is informed of her son's death, in Saving Private Ryan should have been played.

3. I'm all for other Star Trek characters from the other show's getting into the movies - particularly if it's 7 of 9. Boston Public is ok but school teachers just don't wear enough skin-tight lycra with 5 inch heels to satisfy me.

4. Wouldn't you hate to be the guy that has to clean up Quark's fantasy holo-suites?

5 When are we going to learn about the 24 century technology which most intrigues me - toilets? Just how does that work? You think about the stuff the Japeneese have today and when you extrapolate that into the 24 century it's just mind-boggling. Personally, I think there ought to be some transporter type of device that let's you just do it in your pants and then the transporter is activated and takes it all away and wipes you clean. Hell, go a step farther and have a device that actually removes the waste in your colon and bladder without ever having to actually relieve yourself - how cool would that be. It could be just like a transporter, you step in, get zapped in place by the transporter but special filters kick in and you rematarialize sans waste products. It wouldn't be all that different from the other biological filters the transporter has.

6. Actually, the "Further Adventures of Grand Negas Rom" sounds kinda a cool to me.

Personally I liked Khan the best, and I am in the rare bunch that really really liked the first movie too. I loved TNG the series but I haven't really liked any of the TNG movies.

One thing I would really like to see is a large scale battle. I'd love to see a battle scene on the scale of the battle we didn't get to see when the Borg stomped the Federation while on the way to sector 001.

I'd like to see a plot where the movie opens with tensions very high on the Romulan neutral zone. So high that the Enterprise gets recalled to a Starbase for a "refit". To our surprise we see the saucer section replaced with a "battle saucer" section; a big gun runs through the center of it and the rest of the saucer is devoted to carrying troops, equipment, and a mobile hospital. Don't get me wrong - I don't want a dumb action flick. I want an intelligent plot line that is heavy on how the TNG crew does the strategy/tactics and execution of a large scale battle. I thnk that would be really cool...

After watching Galaxy Quest, I realised how much ST films sucked. I am sorry, but the acting/direction isn't really there. GQ was just a satire on the whole ST idea.

Sorry I am spoiled, I want to have better action and more fun with this sort of movie and ST lacked in both departments. We all have got a little blase about SFX, they are good for spectacle but don't exactly help the movie develop. Some of the ST story lines were just plane lame, some showed promise, but were not well developed.

Nicholas Meyer is the best Star Trek movie director. It's quite clear watching #6 the influence he had on the screenplay, with all the literary references.
I don't understand why they don't just get him in there for the even numbered movies :)

It's a documentary about star trtek fans. Anyone who has seen it will remember and recognize a particular trekkie who was creating his own star trek movie called "Nemisis". This was quite a while ago, and the movie, I believe, was supposed to be about a star station, but what impressed me was the detail he and his crew put into designing their movie. Now, I would have written this incident off as coincidence if not for the information I just recently aquired, which is that this particular trekkie was seen on an episode of drew carrey. Now, this isn't exactly a "big holywood break", but I can't help but wonder if they're using any of his ideas in this new movie. Does anyone have any information about this?

Basically it's going to be a big FX-packed movie with crappy story (I just hope it won't be as bad as battlefield earth, that's the 0 in a scale from 0-10 in this category), of course we can always WISH the guy learned but seeing the hollywood trend since a few years, I seriously doubt it.

My god I really can't believe that everyone thought that Insurrection was really that bad I mean it wasn't a clasic; It did not even live up to what you where really expecting (hipe is so pointless), but still imho that there was an intresting plot to it and we got to see why subspace weapons are really no ones friends.

I guess I should say there are spoilers here for anyone who hasn't seen Insurrection and actually wants to, but I won't recomend it.

It made sense. It was entertaining.

It made sense and was entertaining only in the way that Armageddon made sense and was entertaining. It made sense because it did not require anyone to think. The good guys were beautiful suburban white people. The bad guys were ugly, puss ridden freaks, so it was easy to keep track of who was who. Then, there was twenty minutes of running away from baddies through caves. Who didn't see that they were going to have to go back for that kiddie's pocket baby-seal and get trapped by a cave-in at least five minutes before it happened? For me, it was entertaining in the same way as Armageddon, which is to say it was not.

And then there's the lame transporter save. If they could save Picard from the thing before it blew up, why not the baddie, too? If they neglect to save him when all they have to do is beam up two people instead of just one, isn't that just murder? If not, its at least sloppy writing.

As for First Contact, I thought there were some great moments of real internal conflict where data is being tempted. And they made Troi tolerable. All you had to do was get her drunk. Who knew?

I do agree that the (only) cool thing in Insurrection was Data going nuts at the begining. That was fun, and unexpected.

I can't help but be impressed that they've been able to consistently follow this pattern for 9 movies. I'm sure after first contact, people said "They must have learned their lesson now - Insurrection will be great" It's not often that you can consistently rate a movie before it comes out.

What became ST:TMP was originally intended to be the pilot for a new Star Trek Series: Star Trek: Phase II. At that time, Paramount was working out all the details of starting up a Paramount television Station, and ST:Phase II was supposed to be the premiere launch vehicle for the new network. Plans for the Paramount network were scrapped only a few weeks before ST:PhaseII was set to begin filming. They had it all going on, sets were built, costumes made, scripts were being written, i believe most, if not all, of the original cast were signed up for the new series too. When the plans for a new TV station were scrapped, PhaseII was also scrapped. When paramount later called for a Star Trek motion picture, it was indeed in answer to Star Wars, but it wasn't because they feared Star Wars would become more popular, Rather, they were capitalizing on Star Wars' success. it was sorta like "hey look how good Star Wars is doing. I dont know much more off the top of my head, but there is a book out with ~alot~ of information about what Phase II was going to be. From what I know, they had some seriously good ideas, but because the network was scrapped, so was Phase II as a result, and what could have possibly been the best Star Trek Show ever never came to be. It wasn't all the surprising that when Paramount revived plans to start a TV network in the 90's that they went shopping for a Star Trek show to headline the new network, and hence, we ended up with Voyager.. but that's another discussion totally.

They take a risk with the odd ones because they know everybody will show up anyhow in the hopes that maybe THIS time they'll finally break the pattern. It of course flops, and then they have to work hard to make a good one to make sure that people don't just give up all together.

Actually, it seems like they do exactly the opposite. The odd movies tend to be more of the same (tm) while the even ones more often break the mold (ST IV for example).

So the average for ODD movies is 2.6 and EVEN movies it is 3.2

The WORST movie was an ODD (2) one and the best was an EVEN (3.5).

To top it all off there is NEVER the case that a ODD movie is followed by and EVEN movie with a LOWER score, nor an EVEN movie followed by an ODD movie with a higher score, so the curse exists. ;)

Star Trek's 2, 4, 6, and 8 are the four best.

The worst by far is 5. It's not even in the same category.

Four is a very good movie, and a very good Trek movie... if you didn't like it, you must have misplaced your sense of humor or something. Most people list it as their first or second favorite (with Trek 2 being the other first or second favorite).

Okay I got an idea for another star trek movie. A Soverign class ship is being built in the ship yards, and for some strange reason a temporal rift opens and the ship unmanned goes into the rift. It just happens to collide with the Enterprise NX-01, and severly damages it. Cpt archers crew is then forced to board and takeover the modern Soverign class battleship and discovers the borg we're really trying to get a hold of it. But cpt archer gets it first. Somewhere along the way they meet up with Seven of nine, and her and cpt archer get it on. full nudity of course with closeups of the "real" action. while this is going on, Tepal get's hot and bothered and joins in on the fun. After archers bones these two, he gets captured by the borg queen, and lays he d**k on her too and ends up handing the borg a major defeat. THE QUEEN GETS LAID!

The best Trek films worked because they had Kirk, Bones and Spock. Kirk is truly larger than life.

The only good part in Generations, (an otherwise BAD, BAD, BAD film), was when Kirk made Picard look like a square school boy. (And I think Picard is a wonderful character!) But I hate, 'Good Parts' films. If it isn't all good, then it's a bad film. Period.

Truth is this: Giant casts of so-so actors all with contracts which guarantee X minutes of screen time regardless of the needs of the story, = Another SHITTY film.

The last good trek film was the "Undiscovered Country." Story first.

Everything since was boring shlock. The Odd/Even numbered movie thing is completely innacurate from my perspective. I loved the first film. I liked the fifth film. I despised the eighth film. I don't understand people.

Finally: Watching Data say "Shit" was everything Trek was not supposed to be. Thanks Berman. You can't write. Please turn in your pen and go home before somebody wizens up and kicks your conceited ass.

The best thing about the next film is that Wil Wheaton will get some work and personal satisfaction.

Star Trek 12:So Very Tired

I'm just holding out for Star Trek 12 to be released..it's bound to be a classic!

The "end" of Star Trek.

A long while ago a friend and I were discussing how the Star Trek franchise was going down the tubes, and that Star Trek 10 ought to be some sort of movie that will "end" Star Trek entirely. In other words, it wouldd somehow close the open holes in TNG, and DS9 story lines all at once. I know that this won't happen, and I'm sure that the hardcore Trekkies would probably dislike it.

I think one of the rather off the wall ideas we thought of was a scenario in which Sisko returns, but returns "evil" somehow. He forges an alliance with the Romulans, and in the end the crew of the Enterprise must sacrifice their ship and themselves to save the galaxy. This could be an interesting way to end the whole franchise, would intermingle the TNG and DS9 cast (as well as providing a GOOD excuse for Worf to rejoin the Enterprise Crew).

It might seem rediculous, but I find that solution more appealing than the direction the franchise appears to be heading: more series that suck even worse than Voyager / Soft core porn.
