Steve Jobs Recommends Android For Fans of Porn

And iPhone users (including children) don't have access to porn? Last time I checked (guilty as charged!) there are iPhone specific streaming sites for porn. Instead of going to the app store all they have to open up Safari and google for the goodies.
Is it my imagination, or is Steve being more douchey than usual?

He is really being a dick there. There's a "porn store" for the iPhone as well, called "Mobile Safari". If anything, the prices are lower.
However, if he is going to be an asshole he should have gone just a little further... Something to the effect of "And the inferior multitouch support won't bother you nearly as much if you are always using your phone one-handed..."
Steve, buddy! Thanks for the recommendations, I'm a huge fan of pr0n. Could you also recommend pr0n-friendly restaurants, hotels, bakeries etc?

I don't need Apple to act as a morality police for what I do with something I own.
Steve Jobs responded, "We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone. Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone. "
Well, I don't see that porn is particularly harmful to children, especially compared to the violence in media and games sold on the iPhone, so I don't know why one would be a moral imperative and the other would not. I actually think this is marketing, designed to appeal to parents who want their kids kept safe from the evils of... umm... boobies?
But that's okay. If he's recommending an Android phone, I'll probably take him up on it when I purchase a smartphone.
Apple products are for girly men... Or not.

Jobs simultaneously drags the android through the mud while claiming a moral high ground for the iphone. what's Google going to do? Trying to defend pornography will be an uphill battle going to a place "where we don't want to go".

After being asked about the App Store's recent ban on "sexy apps," Steve Jobs responded, "We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn out of the app store to keep the moronic soccer moms off our ass. Folks who want porn can just use safari and browse to it like a normal person. You know, there's plenty of porn available on the iPhone, and plenty of gay porn hookup apps that soccer moms won't even notice. You can download porn via the browser, or any number of "respectable" apps from companies that make us a lot of money like Playboy and Sports Illustrated , your kids can download porn on their iPhones faster than we can attempt to block it, so we just come up with some lame ass story for the soccer mom's and they buy it because they are fucking pathetically stupid. That's a place we don't want to go, blocking safari, because we know kids will find their porn via browser anyway, so we're not going to go there."
"We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone."
Apple's only moral responsibility is to let their users do whatever they feel like, and they have failed.
The "Apple cult" image tossed around as a joke and an insult is becoming more and more true every day. You can't simply buy a device from Apple - you have to buy their device, their software, their platform, and their tastes, desires and morals too, and once you do, you can't separate any of them. This isn't vendor lock-in, it's religion.
Where is Steve going to draw the line... Netflix might have some movies on the edge, or tv shows. What's next?
I'm not supposed to be posting this, but, that's actually one of the main features of IPhone OS 5.0.
Each web page will have a special xml configuration file available that the OS will download, allowing the user to be redirected to a corresponding Apple-approved app at the App Store. The user may then download the app to get the corresponding functionality of the website, but with a much better user experience, since the app is running locally, and has been blessed by Apple.

Sure, but they don't come through Apple. Any application is sold through Apple, so they are at least marginally responsible for content.
But as you noted, it really doesn't matter since the internet itself offers porn in vast quantities.

For anyone who's about to bitch and moan about Apple closing their app store to questionable apps ("porn"), and I know that list is long, ask yourself if you have a problem with Walmart dictating what products can and cannot appear on their store shelves. If you are ok with Walmart having enormous control over what appears in their stores, to the point that content providers will make Walmart-friendly CDs (for example), then feel free to bitch about Apple doing exactly the same thing. At the very least you'll be consistent in your view that stores everywhere should carry everything just because it exists, regardless of whatever business plan they may have and customer base they may wish to appeal to. Otherwise, keep your complaints to yourself because every damn store on the planet does this. Walmart, which has probably the broadest selection of products, doesn't carry everything, just because it exists, so why should Apple? Just because someone wants to build it and just because some people want to buy it doesn't qualify something to appear in a company's store...
Yeah. I'm grumpy. Deal with it.
... and have apple go back to the niche market it deserves with it's close-minded dysfunctional ideas ?

But the way Jobs is going about deciding what CONTENT I get to have? WTF is that?

No, no, no. Apple is simply saying they will not sell apps that contain porn. You are free to find it yourself and view it via Safari or install via iTunes. Please don't confuse the issue.
I don't know about anyone else, but my primary fear is that my kids would see it and tell one of their friends at school about it. This then gets overheard by a parent with a huge stick up their ass who goes and tells anyone she can find that I'm letting my children watch porn, and before I know it I'm on the sex offender registry and my kids have a new family because this whole country always has a huge kneejerk overreaction whenever sex and children are mentioned in the same paragraph.
In short, it's not that I don't think my kids could handle porn, it's that everyone else couldn't handle the idea that my kids were exposed to porn.
Don't reward their behaviour if you disagree with it on principle. Just don't buy one. It's also helpful to tell people why you won't buy one when you have the opportunity.
yea, its just America. Its not like the UK recently passed any draconian measures limiting the types of porn you are allowed to possess. And its certainly not an issue in other countries like India where 2 people kissing in a mainstream movie can be a huge media event.

He's saying this for consumption by the media. It's a nice buzz-bit. "Android is for porn." The media will repeat it because it's pithy and uses a titillating word. And the folks who have no clue about restrictions will repeat this to themselves when they go to buy a phone. Wives will insist that husbands buy iPhones for themselves and for the kids.
This is not Jobs being stupid. This is both genius and an indication that Jobs is very, very afraid. His control-everything system depends on him being the master of really the only very good phone/tablet system. There's another system and pretty soon it'll be good enough to make his look less revolutionary. He needs another way to keep his silo full.

Parents are not ALLOWED to parent their children in America. That's the State's job. (Somewhere, Mussolini is laughing.)
Two anecdotal incidents:
1. My son is wont to run off without looking or thinking if he does not get what he wants (Mom tends to give in to irrational desires, me: far less so). I stopped him from trying to run into highway traffic while he was having one of his fits because he did not want shoes. Later, his mother called police because there was a small abrasion on his stomach. (I held him around the abdomen.) I was arrested, jailed for felony assault of a minor, and eventually pled guilty to disorderly conduct -- not because I was fearful of facing the charge -- but because it was necessary that the case be closed so I could continue to parent my kids: the State had to give me a trial within 90 days of pressing charges, but they could sit on those charges for five years, keeping the case open. Besides, disorderly conduct in WA essentially is anything that might make someone assault you -- perhaps someone might think I was trying to kidnap him.
2. My daughter wanted to meet a much older person she was chatting with online. I though it a perfect chance to teach how to meet strangers, that might become friends, even as I was wary. I set ground rules: I come along, we meet in a very public restaurant for lunch, we go our separate ways, we do not disclose where we live, we make sure we are not followed after. I was wary about this person's intentions but figured a blanket veto would just encourage a secret meeting which could be far more dangerous. I drilled her on "stranger safety" before the meeting and debriefed her after. This was deemed by a mental health professional as a "poor choice" and that the veto would be better.
3. A friend of my daughters recounted how some female classmates wanted her to be "in" on their plan. They were upset at how much homework a male teach was assigning and were to accuse, en masse, that he sexually abused them, figuring their numbers would bolster the believability of the allegation.
The bottom line is that effective parenting can get one jailed these days. And, I know many parents who outright fear their kids.
In Liberty, Rene
It's a valid fear. I know someone who asked her father about sex she was about 6 or 7. Her father, not being ashamed of the biological process, gave her a frank and straightforward explanation. Being a child, she then told some of her classmates about it and next thing you know: the parents were getting a visit from CPS.

Is the extreme hypocrisy of allowing SI swimsuit and Playboy apps but saying "We don't allow porn."
Look, it is my well educated opinion that Playboy, soft-core BS, swimsuit calendars/photoshoots, and basically the societal desire to objectify women through "moral" sexualizations causes MORE harm than XXX hard core pornography does. Why? Because it's insidious and sends terrible messages to people and messes with their psyches. It's OK to objectify and look at women sexually as long AS LONG AS THERE'S NO SEX INVOLVED?! But, wait, isn't that the point? Oh, no, it's better to get guys hot and bothered with teases and pics of scantily clad women everywhere and then tell them "SEX IS BAD!!!" than it is to show them videos of ACTUAL SEX and saying, "Meh, it's just sex." REALLY?? This is the moral stance??? It's OK to have Janet Jackson sing about sexual topics, dress sluttily and grind her body against a man in a mock sexual ritual but "HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!! 0.5 SECONDS OF TIT JUST FLASHED ACROSS MY TV SCREEN!!!" That messes with people's heads and gives them warped ideas about sexuality and women.
So Steve Jobs can keep his "moral" porn and I'll hang on to the stuff that doesn't pander to me and send me mixed messages about what's right and wrong, what's ok and what's dirty, and enjoy the wisdom of knowing IT'S ALL ABOUT SEX without pretending "sex but not sex" is somehow better than just sex without all the BS.
>> Playboy's and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition are still available on the App Store, however, as they come from 'more reputable companies
Ahh so kids seeing "reputable" porn is OK then ehh Steve? ... Obviously this actually has nothing to do with porn and all to do with licencing revenue.
What's worse then someone telling me what I can and can't watch or read? Someone lying about why they are doing it - pretending that they are doing it for some sort of morality or public good when it has become obvious that they aren't.
Then again, I guess explanations used for censorship are usually dishonest so I shouldn't be surprised.
People have already pointed out that the iPhone is, in fact, not a porn-free zone. It is, though, becoming a competition free zone as Apple blocks apps that might compete with their own or those of their corporate buddies.
I truly own my AAPL shares! They opened 6% over yesterday's close. I thought I was hallucinating this morning.
Apple released a quarterly earnings report showing that they sold 8.75 million of those horrible phones when 7 million had been projected.
..but sweatshop labor, berating employees to the point that they kill themselves, locking you into our products, we'll go there no problem.
We all know where betamax ended up in the video tape wars.
And its not because of porn. The iPhone has still a browser. So you could still surf to pron sites if you want. It is the attitude which drives me to free phones. Steve does not want Java on the phone and Steve does not like flash on the iPhone (ok flash sucks, but it should be my decission), Steve does not like cartoons on the iPhone, because some could be offended by them, and Steve does not want other app-stores for the iPhone. Steve's phone has iTunes build in, but you cannot easily interface that thing with other music stores. In short the iPhone is dongle ware. I will never buy dongle ware again.
So the Android phone is a direct substitute for the iPhone, and also has porn? Thanks for clearing that up Steve!
Also, I don't think anyone failed to map "more reputable companies" to "companies that can pay us enough to shelve our so-called principles"...

If you Google "iPhone Porn" it shows 28,200,000 results. You don't need a separate app to show it.
If you Google "Android Porn" it shows only 2,350,000 results. The bottom line is Steve Jobs and Apple support porn more than anyone, reputable or not.

Where are these so called "porn" apps of which he speaks? I dont see anything porn related in the android store with the exception of some "privacy" browser which just deletes cookies and history and stuff. Yea the Android Market is much more open than the Apple Store, but its not exactly teaming with porn apps. Jobs is just a douche bag trying to justify his communist/socialist attitude a bunch of BS aimed at discrediting his competitors.

No seriously... where are these porn apps??? Inquiring minds want to know! lol
In still other news, a sex tape has surfaced, allegedly of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

They censor song names in iTunes. They censor apps...
When do they start censoring the music content? How about the movies? Will Apple start demanding edited movies like Walmart did?
Fuck Apple and their hypocrisy. They say they're the "artist friendly" company... and yet they dictate content and censor song names?
Why so different Steve?
Because Apple runs, promotes and handles the money from the App store. If you were able to buy porn from the App Store you would be buying porn from Apple.
In a country where a glimpse of Janet Jackson's Bristols causes a massive scandal and phone-number fines for the messenger, and even moobs now seem to be unacceptable, you can see why they might want to keep the smut at arm's length.
If you buy a Mac (or, even, access porn from the iPhone) then your smut is being provided by a third party. You're not buying it from Apple.
When App writers protest about the T&Cs of the app store, its easy to forget that they're getting a shedload of indirect publicity from Apple. Try getting your better mousetrap on the shelves at Walmart...
(I'd concede that the "originally written in C/C++/ObjC" curb is bonkers, though).

I don't believe any sane person believes that maximizing shareholder profits at the expense of consumer freedom and choice is a moral thing. And no, Wall Street is not sane.
Apple has a financial responsibility to it's shareholders, not a moral one. If the law allowed companies to put babies on spikes and make an obscene amount of profit from doing so, any company would do it. The amount of profit companies make these days is obscene. Naked people doing acts based on natural bodily functions to give each other pleasure is not obscene.

I am LMAO, if your a geek and you bought an iDevice and expected something else your not a very bright geek, it is a better sign of customer service to say no once in a while, Steve apparently believes this and identified someone that was not the targeted customer for his services, recognizing this and suggesting a product that does suit the needs of the person asking even when its a competitors product is newsworthy and a fair share better than what his competitors would do.

I think it is safe to say, without even a hint of hyperbole, that Steve Jobs is a fascist. As soon as censorship becomes a "moral responsibility", something has gone deeply wrong. Supporting Apple is supporting the death of the creativity and freedom that the company likes to pretend it nurtures. Think too different, and your work will be dragged out in the middle of the night and shot.
Actually, I think your argument is the one that is, er, unsound. Jobs said Apple wants to keep porn of the iPhone - meaning Apple does not want to endorse porn. He said nothing about the iPhone not having access to porn via channels beyond Apple. You didn't read the statement comprehensively.
Apple simply wants to keep porn out of its media-content store. Apple's target demographic is families and education. As an Apple shareholder, I completely agree. There is no need in Apple's business model for Apple to endorse nor allow porn-centric apps.
Which comes to another point: sites who create iPhone-friendly content are in no way a relection on Apple's content policy. Thats a fallacy of logic. Apple has nothing to do with those sites.
As well as, those who are ridiculing Jobs' position because the web browser can access porn have no ground to criticize Apple for blocking content - because according to the critics, the content isn't blocked. To do so, contradicts their own line of reasoning - and is *unsound*.
Apple just reported the the best non-holiday quarter ever in the middle of the worst recession, surpassing similar companies... Only a fool would criticize Apple's strategies.

Apple has always done things there own way. They don't have to sit there and try to respond to "the market" wether they think the market wants porn or not. They are leaders and innovators and create their own markets. They probably realize that porn is as pernicious and vicious as cocaine in ruining peoples lives. For you that like to sit there and jerk off to your computer all day you will realize this one day. Apple is not perfect. In fact I'm pretty pissed off that I had to reinstall OS X twice in the last 6 months because my system completely seized up - but I appreciate them taking a moral stand. They are in business to make money like everyone else, but they seem to want to help elevate society, not facilitate it's decline into the gutter. Porn is destructive and has no value to humanity whatsoever. I invite anyone to seriously research the matter.
That the internet was built on porn.

Thank's for the tip Mr. Jobs!
In other news, Android phone sales have increased by 4000%.
I think it's better worded like this:
'After being asked about the App Store's recent ban on "freedom to use your property as you see fit," Steve Jobs responded,
He continued, "I'm not sure why people phrase it as 'using their property,' when they're insisting that we put apps in the Apple iPhone App Store that we don't want there. It's almost like they don't want Apple to have the freedom to use Apple's property, servers, bandwidth, and store as we see fit. Would they go to Best Buy and insist that their home arts and crafts projects get put on Best Buy's shelves, and would they complain about Best Buy banning freedom if they didn't agree?"
If you want porn on your iPhone, you can go to a porn website, you can rip a porn DVD, you can upload a gallery up porn photos, etc. You can even write a porn app and install it yourself, email it to friends for them to install, or put it up on your own website for purchase. The only thing Apple's saying no to is carrying a porn app in their store. Why are you insisting that a property owner - Apple - carry stuff in their store that they don't want there? Are you opposed to people's freedom to use their property as they see fit?
Slashdot is seriously out of touch with reality regarding Apple. The company just posted yesterday their highest non-holiday profit quarter ever (90% year-over-year increase in profit). iPhone sales were up 130% year-over-year. AAPL stock is soaring right now This is all due to Apple's complete control over the iPhone. So does the lack of hardcore adult content hurt the iPhone sales? No, it does not. Steve Jobs is absolutely right.
Something to the effect of "And the inferior multitouch support won't bother you nearly as much if you are always using your phone one-handed..."

Last time I checked 3 includes 2. I added one more. So, sue me.
We divorced two and a half years ago. Since, she's gone a little (well, a lot) loco. I did not have a kid with a crazy bitch. I had a kid (two actually) with a woman who started to go nuts after the second of the two we agreed to have was born.
Finally, I am seeking custody of both kids now that she is running afoul of truancy laws, has assaulted our daughter, and other general neglect and abuse. Unfortunately, opinions of mental health professionals carry weight and I disagree when "popular" choice is less safe than "unpopular" choice.
As to why didn't I seek custody during te divorce? Arguing who would be the "better" parent (without the day to day "living with" influence of the other) would have been speculative, and where we divorced, if only one spouse works, they pay BOTH attorneys -- that was money that could serve our kids' needs better than those of attorneys. So, I gave her a chance. She blew it. Of coursed, "fixing things" is now much harder than had I chosen to fight for custody in the first place, but hindsight is always 20/20.
One by one, the kids are literally running away from her and seeking shelter with me.

Apple should be more concered with Kids spending $1000 on addictive games than with porn.
If a game can allow a user to spend Real money to play it, then that should be investigated as to whether it is safe or not.
While Porn may not be 'tasteful' or 'reputable'... it is at least safe.
Jobs has written off the entire readership of slashdot as a target market for the iPhone.
I've abandoned my search for truth; now I'm just looking for some useful delusions.
Apple isn't flat lining no matter how much the Droid fans might hope so. They had another record quater with almost 9 million iPhones sold in the latest March quarter. It was their best non-holiday on record.
Although I'm sure there are folks who will bail on iPhone if they find it too constricting, there is obviously no shortage of folks who don't need porn on their phones, and are just fine with that. I love porn, but I don't 'rub one out' while waiting on a doctors appointment. I browse the web, read e-mail, maybe play a game or two, but moans coming from my phone while out out in the public eye just isn't a huge draw for me.
You know, there's a porn store for Android, you can download nothing but porn. You can download porn, your kids can download porn. That's a place we don't want to go, so we're not going to go there.
Is he referring to the internet?
*scrolls through the Android market*
I'm confused, so where's this porn?
You also said the App Store had more apps than the android market, but I see more choice in Android, there are several alternative browsers for example?
After logging in slashdot still does not take you back to the page you were on. It's been that way for 20 years.
Sounds like he is speaking from personall experience - what he keeps and android phone tucked under his pillow :}
The normal apps on the iPhone and iPad are quite picky about what video formats and encodings they accept. There are some third party players that will play more kinds of video content. But, of course, Apple can at any time just disallow anything other than their own video players plus content that they approve. And as recent decisions by Apple show, they have no qualms about screwing existing developers.
kthxbye

Jobs was completely accurate. You just have to realize he defines 'porn' as any non-Apple item. It's part of his reality distortion field. Same one that causes him to come up with a logo that says: Bite me.
you are the ceo of a manufacturing company. your job is to deliver products to your customers and allow THEM to choose what to do and what not to do on your product. you should provide the means for parents to block certain apps, but do not block the apps for the parents yourself, by your own self justification.
you are not the shepherd of apple flock to herd them like they were goats. you are the ceo of the company that produces products for them.

Didn't VHS win out over Betamax partly because the porn industry adopted VHS after they were "discouraged" from Betamax by Sony. Seems this "urban legend" has never been firmly validated or refuted, but it's persistence might server as a warning to Jobs. I doubt the I-Phone or I-Pad will stem the tide of porn providers, however, as those folks will just become more clever.

Walmart doesn't have a near monopoly. I can buy physical DVDs and books at lots of places. I can mail-order them.
Apple does have a near-monopoly: many mobile apps exist only for the iPhone, a lot of content is only available online on iTunes, and a lot of books are only available online on Kindle or iBooks. Just like with Windows, it doesn't matter how badly the platform sucks (and it does), more and more, you don't have a choice.
Fortunately, Android is addressing this and it is starting to get enough traction to become a serious alternative. But we're going to continue to complain and hold Apple's feet to the fire until this situation is fixed, either because Apple becomes irrelevant, or because they change.

I do have a cause though. It is obscenity. I'm for it. Unfortunately the civil liberties types who are fighting this issue have to fight it owing to the nature of the laws as a matter of freedom of speech and stifling of free expression and so on but we know what's really involved: dirty books are fun. That's all there is to it. But you can't get up in a court and say that I suppose. It's simply a matter of freedom of pleasure, a right which is not guaranteed by the Constitution unfortunately. Anyway, since people seem to be marching for their causes these days I have here a march for mine. It's called...
1) Sounds like you need a better lawyer. Yeah if your wife calls the cops on you and there is evidence - its all over. Generally speaking males abuse kids far more than women do. Males abuse women more then women abuse men. So if a woman calls the cops that someone in your house has been abused and has marks to "prove" it - that's all they need to arrest.
2) I dunno - if mental health professionals are involved with your family (speaking from experience here!) then you already have issues at home and the state needed to get involved.
3) Not sure what #3 has to do with the state parenting your kids. Your daughters friends sound like arseholes. Luckily us teachers have unions that protect us from baseless accusations (and people really do wonder why teachers are unionized - seriously).
Bottom line? If state mental health professionals aren't counseling your family and you don't have a wife calling the cops on you when she suspects abuse - no the state isn't parenting your kids.
Steve Job, today's "moral apostle" on the iPhone, is the same hypocritical fuck who fathered a girl and denied it, yet proclaims his moral superiority to the rest of us because of porn? Steve Jobs doesn't give a flying fuck about porn. It's just more pandering to the Disney crowd. There's nothing wrong with that, but it would be nice if he had the balls to admit it.

In short, it's not that I don't think my kids could handle porn, it's that everyone else couldn't handle the idea that my kids were exposed to porn.
That's about the most intelligent comment I've heard yet on this subject.
... none of them could believe it. "Geez, hide that or you'll get grounded for a month!" "Nah, my Dad doesn't care." It really was pretty cool, and frankly it had zero impact on how I turned out as an adult. Didn't rape anyone, don't have any particular fascination for porno: it's just another facet of life. The way I look at it, kids and pornography is mostly a big deal because some people have decided to make it a big deal (and usually for their own benefit, not the children's.) I put the hypocritical Reverend Jobs squarely in that category.
... I can see the scenario you described happening very easily.
When I was about, oh, eleven or twelve, my Dad handed me a stack of Playboys, Penthouses and other porno mags a couple feet thick (my uncle maintained several subscriptions, apparently.) I went nuts for a week, but after I got it out of my system it wasn't such an attraction. Meanwhile, all of my friends were still hiding their own copies underneath their mattresses to keep them away from their less open-minded parents. Me, I kept mine right out in the open
My Dad always had a way of surprising me. Still, imagine how his attitude would fly today

Actually... it's more like saying that the person who built your house (that YOU own) says that he doesn't want OJ Simpson in the house that YOU own. And actively stops you from having him as a guest.
No, it would be like the person who built your house not offering to call OJ for you to come over. You are still free to invite OJ over yourself.
Except OJ demands a fee for his appearances - and the person who built your house is doing everything they can to stop OJ from offering you the chance to pay his appearance fee and have him come over... Because OJ doesn't know you personally and knows you only want him over because he's famous...
And then the person who built your house has a deal going with Dennis Rodman and tries to encourage you to have him come over instead.

That's probably next. No, it's just that the iPhone's iTunes crap means I can't sync up between multiple computers. So I have tunes at work I can't put on my iPhone unless I jailbreak it. What's even more irritating is that this is true for photos and images too - or at least it was the last time I tried it. Why can't I even sync photos between multiple computers? That shouldn't violate the MIAA's violation of me. But Jobs thinks I shouldn't need to, so it doesn't matter. Grrr.....
The Invisible Hand of the Free Market is what punches workers in the nuts.
I am a fan of Apple, but less and less often lately when Steve Jobs does his Steve Ballmer imitation and acts like a total JACKASS! Android, and Linux more specifically, do stand for freedom which is why I wouldn't buy an iPhone even if I could afford the price of such elitist nonsense. Oh and yes, I do have an Android phone!

Hold on, now - when did this become all about what's best for Apple?
The problem here is that, while Apple's approach works well for them, it's an approach that frustrates would-be developers for the platform and, I imagine, doesn't please a lot of Apple's audience, either. The question isn't whether what Apple's doing is reasonable or advantageous in a business sense or whatever - it's whether we, as potential customers of Apple are OK with this.
Apple could be raking in enough money to buy Canada for all I care - it doesn't change the fact that I personally find the restrictions of their iPhone platform unacceptable - both as a developer and a user.
Bow-ties are cool.
We swear Safari won't let you surf porn (of non-existent species of fungi).
Oh, come on, you think, even in the face of "rule 34" that there's no porn of non-existent species of fungi on the web? I mean, are you really sure? I'd like to mention something that I think might force you to rethink that...
"Pokemon porn"
Now, if you want to get picky, it's not entirely accurate to call something like Parasect a "fungus" - it's half-bug, after all - and it wouldn't be the most popular choice for porn I imagine (no tentacles, etc. - though it can induce paralysis) - but it's a very real possibility and I think it hits very close to the mark, too.
Bow-ties are cool.
1) Well, no. I had a very strong case to defend. No formal charges were ever laid, but the arrest was for felony assault 3 of a minor. An element of the crime was "considerable pain for substantial time", and this was missing. The more proper charge would have been assault 4 of a minor which is a "catch all", that includes leaving a mark on a child under 13 (he is 9). A defense is to prevent the child from hurting himself or others. Our son has been diagnosed with PDD/NOS and has been hospitalized for observation because he was deemed "a danger to himself and others", and he has a propensity to run when he does not get his way, hence, my actions to restrain him, This is also why psychologists and psychiatrists are involved with us. The current consensus is that he is NOT PDD/NOS, but rather that he has behavioral issues due to his mother not establishing ANY boundaries.
Now, I have been seeking custody of our kids, and the standard is their "best interest". So, yes, psychological evaluations are the norm, particularly if the family already has involved such people for their kids.
Therein lies the legal problem: I could not proceed unless the case against me was closed. The state was not proceeding with formal charges (which would mean a trial in 90 days or less), but they were not closing the case either. (I bailed myself out of jail.) The only way to close the case was to plead to "something" to make the prosecuting attorney happy. Disorderly conduct seamed like a nice catchall, and it fit the statutory definition: acting in such a manner as to make someone assault you (e.g. restraining a child in public). I pled guilty, was given a 90 day sentence, all 90 days suspended for two years, and a $1000 fine. This closes the case.
2. Oh there are plenty of issues. Mother is an unfit parent, and I am seeking custody.
3. Tangentially related: the State gives so much power to kids and wrests them from parents without due process (since taking your kids does not involve your liberty, it is handled in the civil courts). Once they have them, they can "treat" them, and guess who pays the bill? Criminal charges are another possibility, but unnecessary to ruin families and lives.
I know people who fear to discipline their kids in the mildest manner (groundings, withholding of privileges), because the kids pick up the phone, and threaten to call CPS with allegations of abuse.
So the state, by so empowering kids by claiming to "protect" them IS parenting them, because they've made real parenting a legally risky business fraught with the possibility of criminal charges and civil financial persecution.
Ideally, in my case, police (or the prosecuting attorney) would readily see that assault 3 was way out of line, and discovery would reveal that I'd have an affirmative defense against assault 4 to restrain our son because of his mental diagnosis and behavioral history. Might take a few days in jail to sort it out (better safe than sorry), but in a reasonable world, the case would likely be dropped without charges laid.
But, in this world, the prosecuting attorney will either pursue the case, or just as bad, sit on it, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over one's head. The statute of limitations here is five years.
Interestingly, that same affirmative defense would NOT have worked against a disorderly conduct charge, even though it would work against the more serious charge of assault 4.
So, yes, when parents call a kid's bluff, they can very easily find themselves in big legal trouble in this era of "protect the children" hysteria. The state very much IS parent.
Oh, and as to your claim that males abuse kids more than females, care to provide a cite? Evidence suggests the opposite is true: a child living in a fatherless home is more likely to suffer domestic violence.

I'm taking Jobs up on his advice, and have finally decided on the smart phone for me -- a Nexus One. I'd been leaning that way anyhow, but this sealed the deal.
Not that I want to use it for porn (I don't -- my desktop machine is far more conveniently placed for fapping), but that I don't want someone else to tell me what I can or cannot have available on my device. Particularly not someone or some company who decides to be the Morals Police.
Steve Jobs thinks sex is immoral? And the fanbois follow "I think this is a good feature and opinion. We are a lot more productive if we don't engage in any fun activity such as sex. I am not having sex, so no one should be!"

The whole thing reminds me of Blockbuster Video and their somewhat arbitrary "family friendly" policies impacting how movies get made. Now Blockbuster is getting their asses handed to them by competitors with more choice and/or convenience(Netflix, Redbox), and I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple found themselves in the same boat in a few years.

Porn stars get paid by a third party to fuck someone else. Makes me wonder why we haven't seen a make-your-own-porn establishment (aka brothel) open up in Los Angeles yet, where all the "talent" is (aka ran-away-from-home-out-of-money-wishful-starlets)
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
My comment had several implications. For one, you'll never be able to explain to a sociopath why a person can act altruistically. They don't understand morals or values that exist outside of "benefit myself." Attempting to analyze morals and values objectively -- like a sociopath does -- and ignore some "built-in" human elements, you'll never understand the reasoning. A pscyhologist can better explain how a human develops morals and values (when they are not sociopaths) and how they might come out differently than the ones that someone has invented for himself in the throes of sexual frustration, overanalyzation, nihilism, lonliness, etc.
A psychologist could also better explain the sexual maturity stages of children, and why viewing porn has a greater negative effect on children (and adults, for that matter). Any slashdotter could state the same here, but you wouldn't believe it. He could go on to explain the possible negative effects of viewing violence as well, and the implications of blocking violence from the mind of a child -- and then suggest to you why so many people are wired to accept one's depiction, yet abhor the other.
While slashdotters may dabble in psychology, read up on it, monitor the studies, take some college courses, etc -- psychologists actually do this stuff, and can explain things much better on the grounds that you will understand them -- like a physicist explaining quarks to someone who doesn't believe in them vs. a guy who read "Universe in a Nutshell" trying to do the same.
You've already had the reasoning explained to you a hundred times by the unprofessional -- so either you're the unreasonable one or you need a professional to explain it to you.

Disclaimer: My only priority in mobile sounds is quality - I use one of the most audiophile player/headphones combos available and do not compress beyond flac. So the second part of the motto is accurate, the first one is speculative.
What Steve Jobs is recommending is to get an Android phone because it can do more then the Apple product. The Adroid lets you the user chose what it is you want to see and the apps you want to install, without being constrained by someone's idiosyncrasies. Thanks SJ for the strong advice.

We do believe we have a moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone
Yes that is what he said.
But if you took that literally, it would in fact mean yanking Safari or trying some kind of futile content filtering.
Since Apple has not done that, nor does it show any signs it will do that, it's quite obvious Jobs was talking about porn in applications, not porn in general. At any rate the difference is moot since you can in fact load porn on an iPhone or iPad via the browser, and will continue to be able to do so regardless of the exact meaning of his words.

In any larger city's gay community you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a gay porn performer, past or present.
The iPhone can't be switched to "Disk mode", or whatever it is where you can drag and drop music onto it. It only functions in "Managed/sync mode", where you have to select playlists or criteria of songs to sync to the phone. This also means that since that particular iTunes library is managing those playlists, you can't plug it into another PC with iTunes and drag and drop (or copy a playlist...say a new CD you bought over lunch or borrowed from a coworker and ripped at work) to your phone.
aaaand...whee!
Hmm. Them's some strong accusations on a public forum. Can you back them up, or elaborate on why that is your opinion?
On liar: it's pretty hard to tell when one is lying in a public forum, except, for inconsistencies in what they post. All I can say, is that I am telling the truth as best I know it -- even things that are not exactly flattering to me to set the context as straight as I can, without including too much irrelevant stuff.
On "issues": No, not really, just a battle for the best interests of our kids. I've even offered to continue to pay child support to their mother for a while if I gain custody, so she is not left destitute and therefore unavailable to the,
That leaves idiot.
Why come to that conclusion?
I can think of several reasons:
1. I do things which, while appropriate, can get me into trouble, instead of doing things that, while technically illegal, might go unnoticed, and keep me "safe". For example, noticing that my son had shoes so worn they were falling appart when his mother provided him to me so I could geed him, I could return him in that state. Except, while in my care, I an responsible for his welfare, have the means to purchase proper shoes, and he is at risk of tripping over his existing ones and getting hurt. To not purchase shoes for him would be clear neglect -- arguing over who should pay for them is irrelevant to his need for shoes. I'd think that's a reflection on bad laws.
Raising issues covered in '70s TV dramas? In case you haven't noticed, it isn't the 1970s.
So, how, exactly am I an idiot, then?
By not "towing the state line and just shutting up, paying child support, but not actually providing for my kids' welfare, and hoping no one notices?" That just proves my proint, that the state does not permit parents to parent.
Sorry, if I have to chose between what is safer for my kids, and what is legal, I will chose safety.
