No, it's not.
This isn't the first time D&D (officially) has been merged with an RTS game. There was an earlier game called "Blood and Magic" which was poorly set in the world of the Forgotten Realms, there was even a series of FR books to support the game. It wasn't a very good rts game, though.

PAX Concerts were incredibleOK, seriously, _you_ show me another concert that starts out with classical piano, moves onto nerdcore hiphop, and finishes up with metal -- with the audience equally pleased with all three.
Now have two of them, two nights in a row. Rawk.
Couple amusing highlights:- Bawls is going hardcore. They had a...brace for it...Bawls Slurpee Machine. And It Was Good. As if that was not enough...there were some sort of caffeinated yet vaguely carbonated Bawls Pillform spawned in a pitcher that would be poured into confused but curious hands. Yum.
- Take Defcon. Swap Hackers for Gamers. Swap Hot Vegas for Overcast Washington. Swap Feds for...I dunno...Nintendo? Still, the entire thing had the feel of an Alternate Reality Defcon, replete with everyone just so damn happy to be around so many other people who understood them. I mean, just look at Phil here. Happy! (A wink to anyone who sees the very subtle Defcon reference.)
- At Penny Arcade Expo, cosplay girl photograph YOU (in Defcon T-Shirt).

Still, I cannot get over the concerts. Before the Saturday night show began, it was unveiled that there'd be a special act...see, there was this huge gaming competition called the Omegathon, and a mystery game had been decided upon...Karaoke Revolution...with 1700 geeks assembled to watch.
Bet Konami never planned for this.
For those not familiar with Karaoke Revolution, it's basically a game where you're scored on how well your pitch matches what the game tells you you're supposed to be singing. Now, gamers generally do not sing, but it's 2005 and it's time to expand the market (and the eyeballs of these poor geeks that just want to win every NES game ever released). With 1700 people cheering on, we watched...
Two possible reactions:
1) Complete withdrawl
2) Complete insanity
The second was entertaining in its own right, but the first was best represented by...Leroy. Now, these are gaming geeks. Gamers + Leroy = LeeeeROYYYYYYYY!. To say he was cheered on would be an understatement...and to say he didn't take it so well...so the guy's about three fourth through the round, and hasn't managed to sing a single note right. Finally, after much struggling, he gets...one note right. He's on the board! Applause thunders through the audience!
LEEEEEEEEEEROY!
OK. Maybe you had to be there. But it was a truly magical moment.
But about the actual concerts.
Both the Video Game Pianist and Connie Lin were incredible, and MC Chris was more insane than I had any right to expect...but the real surprise, for me anyway, was MC Frontalot. I'd say all sorts of stuff about him, but just grab the single. His CD is great, try not to get it off Bittorrent. Cool guy, too.
It wasn't all hype and noise. Actually just sitting down with a random geek and playing Soul Caliber 2 for the first time in ages was just pure fun. And seeing the faces of all these kids see -
Re:Quake III source code's already available
Doesn't say GPL, but it looks like the source to the game
Game, yes. Engine, NO.
Like I said: this is the source for mod developers. It contains the source for the server side game environment rules, the corresponding client side component of that and the logic for the menu UI. It does not contain any of the graphics engine code. It does not contain any of the AI code.
As you'll see here, "game source" was released back in 2000. -
Don't forget ROTT
Rise of the Triad source code
For those who've forgotten, ROTT was intended as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D, but eventually became its own game. It still has Wolf3D's orthogonal walls, but it gained outdoor areas with sky, varying heights (platforms you can walk over or under), new weapons, and multiplayer modes. In fact, ROTT was the first FPS with a Capture the Flag mode. -

Some suggestions
You might want to try Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, which is free and multi-player. You can get links to download locations here. And if WW2 shooters is not for you, you can try the ETF mod, which makes it a sci-fi shooter instead.
Other good multiplayer games are Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2, both were freely available, but it seems now only Starsiege:Tribes is.
In 20-30 minutes you should be able to play a game or two of any of those I've mentioned.

iTunes for Torrents exists
These payment systems exist. Or at least the infrastructure is there, and the sites are coming online. The issue is that you probably haven't run across much of the content, yet.
I know because for the past couple of years I've been working on distribution of a documentary about the culture of hardcore online PC gamers titled "Fraglimit Hit" (old trailer here).
I wasted the better part of this time trying to sell it through film festivals, online movie download sites, etc. For various reasons these channels just weren't a good fit. Then I started developing my own iTunes-like site.
Thankfully, I came across a P2P service that will handle payments for films downloaded by torrents. So I for one will miss the fact that these sites would help distribute my torrent, when it comes available later this month. Yeah, the sites enable unlawful copying, but my plan was to have these sites help distribution of my film. -
Videos, screen shots, etc.
I posted this a few days ago on my AQFL Web site:
Death_Knight's thread (screen shots [nice ion canon] and comments) mentions a FilePlanet (account required -- free or subscription) video file link (87 MB) with Gnomevasion in World of Warcraft. Here is the video file description: "What happens when you take 300 players, throw in teamwork, voice communication, a server crash, and one of the greatest guilds of all time? You get Gnomevasion! In this video members of Sturmgrenadier form up on an alternate server in WoW when their home of Bleeding Hollow goes down. Hilarity ensues when each and every member wreaks chaos on an unsuspecting server with pink-haired pig-tailed gnomes! Download this video and witness the true power of a Gnomevasion."
Non-FilePlanet sites: #1, #2, and #3 (BitTorrent files).
Funny music video! It is two minutes and 20 seconds. Check it out! -
First things first
Based on the interface I saw in the preview version, it might be better if they concentrated on not sucking first.
The "Netscape Browser Preview" had the most God-awful UI I've seen in a desktop app in a long, long time. It was like they went out of their way to avoid learning the big lesson from the success of Firefox (which was keep it simple, stupid), preferring instead to chrome it up six ways to Sunday.
They even pushed the menu bar over to the right side of the screen -- in complete defiance of the way every other app does it. Who goes to look for "File", "Edit", etc. over there? Nobody. So there's years of muscle memory that you have to un-learn to be productive with the thing.
Their ActiveX "solution" sounds similar. Why go to all the trouble of keeping blacklists, etc. when there is a much simpler and easier for users to understand solution at hand -- just leave ActiveX out of the default install altogether, and offer it as a plugin. Users who need ActiveX for vertical apps are also likely to have sysadmins handy to keep their network secure, so installing a plugin is no big deal. Everybody else, why do they need ActiveX? The only ActiveX control I've seen in mainstream use in years is FilePlanet's download manager, and they offer standard downloads for the ActiveX-challenged, too, so you could ditch ActiveX without too much pain there as well.
Somebody put a silver bullet in the zombie corpse of Netscape already before it embarrasses its legacy any further...

what do I care?
For ages they never had a title ported to Linux.
When Vivendi bought Sierra they dictated Tribes 2 should be stopped being produced for Linux.
check out Tribes 2 "sold out" ref: Loki Games
The code is there - the binaries are there - the cost is zero -
they allowed Windows users to download a free Tribes 2 .. but won't allow even Linux users purchase one any more.
I say .. fucking die the lot of them.
I accept economical ones but those were not. .. These people deserve having their scrotum ripped off - and their bleeding balls up be forced up their nostrils.
MS-fearing Mega-corps will do anything to stop gaming coming to Linux and Mac.
Because when that happens - the Desktop war is over.

Re:Is anyone really working on a new duke3d?!
All I can hope is that it's working on the Unreal 3 engine, because by the time it comes out, everyone's computer will handle it at 1000 FPS.

Speaking of Guild Wars...
Don't miss the next Beta Weekend Event for a weekend of Guild Wars gaming. It's THIS weekend (starting January 7th) and you can get free beta keys at FilePlanet for an entire weekend of fun. Or not. Regardless, it's a good way to make up your mind, and I suppose the only "cost" is a disposable e-mail address for the sign-up!
:-)
Personally, I have ordered the pre-order package for a key that will be good for all BWE's and it's a good tip if you end up liking the game, since it's not certain they'll give away keys for free next time. -
Beta Weekend
The next beta weekend is this weekend (8th - 9th). You can grab the client from http://guildwars.com/ and a beta weekend key http://www.fileplanet.com/betacenter/guildwars/ (reqs email + dob)

Re:Several suggestions
They released them both. Unfortunately, though, Tribes 2 (second link there) only had a limited number of keys available for downloading it. It appears that they may add more keys later on, but for now you can definitely get the first one no problem. That might be for the best, considering that the hardware being used might not be the latest and greatest, Tribes 1 is probably going to be able to run on a wider range of hardware than the sequel.

BitTorrent
If you're a paying customer, you can grab the file from FilePlanet. Alternatively, you can signup for the WoW beta here, and grab the Official Blizzard Download Client from the signup area.
Since the official Blizzard download client is a marvelous piece of BitTorrent shit (the Blizzard forums are rampant with posts complaining of choked bandwidth and horrible download speeds - I'm personally getting about 6 KB/s down and was putting up 70 KB/s before I choked the upload with a 3rd party program.), does anyone have a torrent file for this?
I did find a torrent on Suprnova, but haven't been able to get a decent connection speed. -
Re:Again?...and then forced Bungie to port Halo to the X-box.
Do you have any idea what you're even talking about? Halo went through so many changes that if it had been released on the Mac as originally planned it would have been yet another mediocre RTS game on a platform with a very small videogame market.
I'm not a Microsoft advocate, but because of Microsoft's purchase of Bungie, they were given an infusion of funds and resources to make what would have been an undersold and mediocre game into the best FPS on the Xbox, perhaps even the best FPS console game to date (yes I've played Goldeneye and Perfect Dark-- Niether game can is as good as Halo multiplayer, new technology notwithstanding).
For anyone interested, here's a look at the evolution of Halo. Get an idea of what it would have looked like had Microsoft not been involved. Trust me... nobody would have bought a Mac just because the RTS Halo-as-it-would-have-been was on it.

Re:A word of warning to those thinking of buying
I've got a good suggestion based on the information based above.
Try out World Of Warcraft, I myself just uninstalled and removed my account from SWG because of JTL. Why? The same reasons above, and more.
- Promises not being kept (Smuggler Revamp)
- Crazy amount of XP needed to proceed
- Messed up economy where ships / houses / anything important will cost you your life savings.
- The horrible grind.
Anyways, World Of Warcraft has solved a lot of these issues. The gameplay is 100X what I've seen in SWG. The graphics are phenomenal, and your not stuck in 1 or 2 professions.
Here's the choices.
1) 9 Character Races (Tauren, Human, Dark Elf, Etc)
2) 9 Main Base Classes (Hunter, Rogue, Warrior, Etc)
3) 8 Primary Professions (Mining, Engineering, Tailor, Etc )
- You can choose two of these.
4) 3 Secondary Professions (Fishing, Cooking, First Aid)
- These are optional, but you can take them all.
The possibilities are endless.
For Example:
I have a Tauren Hunter that has Engineering and Mining as his professions. I also took Fishing, First Aid and Cooking for my Secondary Professions. These Secondary profession are free and don't hurt you at all ;)
Anyways, There is currently a open beta trial that blizzard and fileplanet have released.

Actually, that's the cost for a quarterly subscription. A few hours after the announcement went up on fileplanet last night, they changed the link. It was originally pointing to the $7.90 basic subscription page. http://www.fileplanet.com/subscribe/wow/r3.html is the cheaper signup page.

Interesting Extension Idea
Actually, I remember seeing a virtual reality tour of the famous Notre Dame. We're seeing this sort of thing more and more, mostly with QuickTimeVR.
As with most of these technologies, I think companies are mostly still a little leary because the average computer is still a little bit underpowered. I'm a tech guy and I still use my 700mhz laptop for daily stuff. -

14-days free trial is still on...
I recently played the free 14-days trial (still available). I was impressed and see how it can be addicting even though the game was choppy on my aging Athlon XP 2200+ machine with an ATI Radeon 9800 AIW (128 MB) video card. I have to say that a lot of has changed according to the timeline (quite funny too).
I hope City of Heros will be doing the same when it reaches its one year anniversary. I will have to check this game out after I upgrade my system and when I have more free time in a few months. -
Re:q2 was its own engine, I believe
I believe you're thinking of the Quake 3 engine. The Quake 2 engine was in fact built on the Quake 1 engine -- heavily rewritten, of course (.DLLs as oppposed to QuakeC, different storage systems for textures and models, built-in OpenGL support, etc.), but built on it nevertheless. Quake 3 was pretty much a ground-up project.
No, I'm talking about Quake 2. While I'm sure theCarmack started with some Quake 1 bits, the engine is a major change from Quake 1. The rendering engine was rewritten, the networking engine was rewritting, the file formats were rewritten, etc. In other words, it was all new, unlike Half-Life that tacked on bits like skeletal animation while leaving other bits hardly changed at all. Of course, you can download the Quake 2 source code and Quake 1 source code and see for yourself. Also, theCarmack sometimes reads and posts on Slashdot, so perhaps he can clear this up once and for all.
theCarmack tends to rewrite engines for id games (non-id games like RTCW or the upcoming Q4 don't get brand new engines). This makes sense, because id games have recently existed solely for demonstration purposes (licensing of the Q2 engine, Q3 engine, upcoming Doom 3 engine). Doom was not a modified Wolf3D engine. Quake was not a modified Doom engine. Q2 was not a modified Q1 engine, and so on. This is in contrast to Epic, who are constantly refining rather than rewriting. The current Unreal 2 technology engine is still recognizably similar to the original Unreal engine, and I expect that the upcoming Unreal 3 technology will still have a common thread. Neither way is better or worse than the other. They're just different approaches taken by two different geniuses (theCarmack and Time Sweeney).
On a side note, since theHair's site was posted in the original article, it seems that John Rome"Hair"o is growing out his man-locks again. He was quite the pretty woman when he had his long hair, and many fanboys were disgusted to find out he really was a man when he cut it a few years back (apparently while in depression from the failure that was Daikatana).
-
Similar Idea already in use...
This might be slightly off topic, but it seems to me that an idea very similar to this is already being used in development. What I am talking about is the new Unreal engine. From the videos I have seen, it seems like the technology strives to create complex surfaces without using many polygons. Once of the examples they show in the game is a box with a complex grated surface which interacts with light and is shadowed appropriately, but when viewed in wireframe mode is simply a flat box made of very few polygons. They also give many more examples, including a wall made of bricks which a bump-mapped correctly but, again, in wireframe the wall is flat and the bricks are not composed of polygons. You can see the video for yourself here.
