Re:A few questions
PayPal has a long history of closing accounts, dipping into bank accounts that are associated with accounts, freezing assets without recourse and generally being really shitty corporate citizens. Their status as an effective middleman is middling at best.

Re:MMOs and TV show universes
Until the game gets quietly invaded by the SA Forum Goons or Anonymous.
Then, JUST at a critical junction in the plot, a massive chunk of the player base will suddenly start spamming the chat channels, or running dance emotes, or attacking the wrong side, or suiciding their spaceships into the wrong thing, or finding some way to take advantage of a game mechanic to introduce flying Dongs into the scene.
Basically, there isn't any reliable way to allow this to function in the stated manner and NOT get PWNED by even loosely organized griefers. Let alone a seriously organized group that wants to make a name for themselves as "Those guys that ruined a multi-million dollar Sci-Fi channel show." -
Other fun wiki games...My personal favorite is Wikigroaning.
Excerpt: The premise is quite simple. First, find a useful Wikipedia article that normal people might read. For example, the article called "Knight." Then, find a somehow similar article that is longer, but at the same time, useless to a very large fraction of the population. In this case, we'll go with "Jedi Knight." Open both of the links and compare the lengths of the two articles. Compare not only that, but how well concepts are explored, and the greater professionalism with which the longer article was likely created. Are you looking yet? Get a good, long look. Yeah. Yeeaaah, we know, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. (We're calling it Wikigroaning for a reason.) The next step is to find your own article pair and share it with your friends, who will usually look for their own pairs and you end up spending a good hour or two in a groaning arms race. The game ends after that, usually without any clear winners... but hey, it beats doing work. -
Re:Centralized Health Database for analysis
I agree. "Google has a health product! That must mean THEY'RE A WITCH!"
Calm yourself, woman!
What if Google had a Google Crime product where you can track not the history of crimes, but the PATTERNS that they occur. For instance, most thefts occur within a mile of where a suspect lives.
What this product (Google Health) could do is CONFIDENTIALLY (Yes, CONFIDENTIALLY) track patterns for aliements or for statistical values. No one is going to know about your problems unless you share them PUBLICLY, and as we have seen in many medical dramas what happens when patients do not tell their doctor TRUTHFULLY what is wrong with them!
Personally, I would be more concerned about my ISP intercepting that information than Google having it. -

Re:Fonts fixed yet?
Oh good. Then please tell me how you did it. Every Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and iMac I have installed with Leopard (5+ so far) has had crappy font display. With sub-pixel hinting enabled it's always horribly blurry, on any monitor.
And it's apparently not just Ou and me who have noticed. -
Re:I believe it
I know somethingawful.com does not count as scientific research, but this is exactly what Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka (founder of somethingawful.com) said in his speech at UIUC back in 05. The talk was meant to be humorous, but there's a lot of truth in it as well. A video of the speech is here:
http://www.somethingawful.com/d/comedy-goldmine/lowtax-speaks-at.php
There is no transcript that I'm aware of, and I don't know the timestamp where he makes that point, but it's in there.

Re:the quoteIf you're willing to take the word of an internet citizen that claims to have contacted Zahn to ask about what he said, there is this post on SomethingAwful that says:
After speaking with Markus Zahn just a few minutes ago, he indeed confirms that the device is NOT a perpetual motion machine and that it simply uses magnets to accelerate to a certain speed, not permanent acceleration. He also was rather snide and rude to me, saying that I shouldn't buy into everything the papers and literature say just because it has the three magical words "perpetual motion machine" in them. So the inventor is just a giant crock of shit.

Insensitive != shouldn't be seen"It shows insensitivity towards Muslim feelings and should be removed immediately." The first part of that sentence is probably true, but I fail to see what the second part of that sentence has to do with the first. I assume that Saadia Bukhari is under the impression that just because something is insensitive means it shouldn't be seen by anyone.
I respectfully refer him to http://www.somethingawful.com/ to gain an understanding of why this assumption is fundamentally flawed. -

And about the Vampire : Bloodlines game I'd also suggest to see this thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2429153&pagenumber=1 ... first part is mainly about play through advices, second part derailed in "World of Darkness" lore and is very interesting. -
Re:Probably the Middle Ages...You're confusing Europe with "the World," and if you really think the Roman Catholic Church was Europe's Centralized government from the 6th Century to the 13th Century, you should stop reading Slashdot and pick up a fucking history book.
I'm not Christian nor are any of my friends/family, but this Internet Atheist BS is really tiresome - you're more interested in anti-Church propaganda than the truth.

And a very short counter to this particular one: Because any startup biotech companies are snatched by big pharma the second the new molecule they've been working on seems to be viable. WRONG
Wal-Mart sells physical items. When you steal a physical item from Wal-Mart, someone looses money. When you copy information from someone, they still have everything they did before and suffer no loss. It's your pencil, your blank piece of paper. You should certainly be allowed to write whatever you want on it. You should certainly be allowed to hand out copies of that piece of paper without worrying about a $10,000 lawsuit. Intellectual Property law does nothing but hinder the growth of the publics' intellect.
The original purpose of copyright was to motivate people to produce creative works. It was not intended for these creative works to be restricted from public use until 70 years after the death of the author of the work. We also notice all over the internet that people are creating all sorts of creative works with no compensation. Look to sites such as jamendo, YTMND, or Something Awful. Look at all of the hundreds of thousands of blogs. Look at the Free Software movement. All of these communities are built upon sharing information and media with the community. There is no form of compensation to the users of these communities, yet they still produce works. There is no need for copyright. -

Re:a blessing on readers of Wheel of time
I love this classic argument. Anyone who's never made a successful movie can never say Uwe Boll movies are crap. Anyone who's never been Miss Missouri can never say that chick gave an air-headed response. Anyone who's never written a #1 best-selling book can never say the Wheel of Time series is tedious.

Re:Vanity in one game
Then there are the ones who spend more time bitching about what game is better or how all the new games suck, then they actually spend enjoying the games they hold so highly.
You'll enjoy this recent SomethingAwful article where they look at postings from a forum where everybody is convinced that Fallout and Fallout 2 are the best games ever, to the extent that they actually threaten to kill Bethesda developers for "ruining" the franchise. (Bethesda's version is not even released yet!)

Life's Battle

Last Battle
I'm gonna go with Last Battle for the Genesis on this one. Beefy guys with huge bodies and puny, puny heads standing at the end of monotonous levels whining about "I want to be a hero" and other such comedy gems. It's almost worth playing just to see what stupid thing the characters will say next.

Re:Wait a minute...
Why should I pay $540 for the course when I can learn the same skills from certain not-so-friendly groups and actually also get paid for it! Saudi Ozzie, here I come.
Terrorist training isn't what it once was. Modern terrorists have difficulty even making bombs that can actually explode.
Also I heard that terrorist summer camps are actually a front for some sort of fundamentalist church. So not only do you not learn how to be an effective bomber, you also get brainwashed with a load of crazy nonsense about Jeebus and vegetarian T-Rexes. All considered, I'd rather pay up and learn about explosives from some proper experts. -
Re:Sex sellsSeeing as how Sony is from Japan (land of the hentai), all they have to do is come up with an incredibly good-looking 3D real-time hentai game of some sort. Yes, the Japanese *can* come up with Hentai games, but hopefully you didn't have one in mind like "Rapelay", then. Not its graphics are "incredibly good-looking" anyway.
(Above link is almost certainly NSFW, BTW.) -
Re:misleading, as alwaysThe funny thing is that they make a veiled threat of legal action against the somethingawful.com - that'll be quite a sight to see! I can't see CCP coming out on top of that battle. (regardless of whether their lawsuit has any legal merit) They haven't got a chance against Leonard Crabs http://www.somethingawful.com/hosted/crabs/, i mean, the man "has been practicing law ever since he was 15 years old and saw a friend wreck his bicycle into a tree."

Standard SA Trolling... Now illegal!
GASP! Those fine upstanding gentlemen at Something Awful? I can't imagine that those fine, upstanding gentlemen, the people who have defined the very word "Internet Troll", would ever, EVER do something as illegal as libel and fraud.
I mean, not to someone who would actually be big enough to fight back, that is.
Granted, these are the same fine upstanding gentlemen who constantly find things online that they don't like then encourage their horde of twits and retards at their forums to harrass people for shits and giggles.
But hey, it's funny when they're finding some kid's Guile fansite or bringing bomb threats to a furry con (and then bitching when the police have something to say about bomb threats right next to an airport), right? So it has to be fun when they're trying the same form of character assassination and harassment on as large a scale as to attack a multi-million dollar international company... right?
Right? Ha ha? So funny? Right?
So obviously, if EVE gets upset enough to actually sue them for this, they're just being bad sports. Ha. Haha. Right? Uh, guys? -

Subject E-11 Blaster Rifle Calibration Still Off
From Stormtrooper Commander 09731
Date A Long Time Ago 3:51 PM
To Nardo Pace
As you know, the E-11 has come a long way since its initial prototype. Thanks to your hard work over the past three years the rifle no longer fires completely sideways, and with your latest revision, the number of casualties resulting from blaster fire being directed completely backwards has been drastically reduced.
That said, the E-11 still has some accuracy issues. We recently bolted one of the rifles to a testing mechanism so that it couldn't move even a millimeter, then set up a human-sized target six feet in front of the blaster's barrel. Shooting in two second intervals, we let the E-11 fire at the target continuously for three days.
The result? Not one shot hit the target. I realize you're busy, but perhaps we can go over the design one more time and iron this out. -

The man to ask is Arnie Lerma. He runs one of the anti-scientology sites - http://www.lermanet.com
His writing is a bit haggard some time to time, but I guess that's a side-effect of eating nothing but rice and beans on the SeaOrg. I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up in this discussion. You can say his name 3 times in-front of a mirror and he'll appear. Just like Biggie Smalls.
He was recently summoned here: Scientology thread on SomethignAwful -

I heard they release a song with each version of OpenBSD but I've never actually listened to it.
Now that I did, I think it's terrible. Other people think the same of old releases...
Anyway, if they like it, they can go on writing bad songs along with great software. -
