Re:Most important thingGimp's UI makes more sense on a XWindows system where you can set the individual sections of the UI to stay on top. For instance, I can keep the image full-screen on one monitor while using the editing tools on a second monitor. I'd like to see a single-window app like Photoshop do that! You can on Photoshop on the Mac. The GIMPs little toolbar windows resemble the Photoshop toolbar windows except that the Photoshop windows are much smarter. They automagically always float above the document and automatically hide themselves when no document windows of Photoshop are active so as not to cause unneeded clutter. I wish GIMP would do this, but I don't think linux has this class of window.
Don't they have a striking resemblance?

http://developer.gimp.org/screenshots/gimp-svg-import.png
Personally don't like the single window mode of Photoshop on windows. Its like an odd hack of the program to get it to be usable on an operating system that doesn't group windows by application. But if they didn't do it, then Photoshop on Windows would probably have the same usability problems as the gimp. -
Why link to Degadget? Why is this story linked to Degadget, a "site" stuffed full of Google ads, which just repeats the story from ThinkSecret, which doesn't even get a link?
By doing so Slashdot rewards these parasites with millions of hits, earning them a tidy sum for their plaigiarism. ThinkSecret has ads too, but they dig up their stories, not just copy and paste them from other sites.

From the tech specs it seems to be lithium ion battery.
The think secret gallery (along with the anandtech photos) clearly shows the battery to be a Lithium Ion Polymer (frequently abbreviated to Li-Poly). Couldn't you even have checked what the GP was referring to before posting? -

Re:No competition on the low end
suggesting that Apple is competitive on the low end is just ludicrous. I'd call the low end $500-$1000. Apple's not even in that market.
Especially if the rumors are true that the Mini and the 17" iMac are going away. I'd love to buy a Mac, but those are the only models that I'd really consider right now. I don't really see any likelihood that they would introduce a new type of consumer desktop, like a tower. If the MacBook becomes the lowest-end Mac (starting at $1099), I think a lot of people will really be put off of Macs. -
Re:Spoken Like a True Self-Deluded CEOI had owned that macbook for almost three years before I gave up on it and bought the PC laptop. That's interesting since the MacBook came out in May of last year.

Re:It's a FUD-rucker
Notice how you take things off-topic.
So all those posts of mine you linked in your last reply, they were relevant to the stock options issues at Apple how? This conversation was taken off-topic long before this, by you. Probably about this point where you called me a Neanderthal. There was a forged document, a problem with the accounting books, and emails captured that showed there was something screwy going on with the stock options.
All of which would have been scrutinized as part of Apple's own internal investigation and the SEC's. There is no conspiracy theory here.Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple, and must sign off on the accounting books, stock options, and other decisions that a CEO makes.
I'm sorry, you are incorrect. Steve Jobs does not sign off on his own stock options. The board of directors approves those motions and in Apple's case, an independent panel also makes decisions about compensation.A CEO takes responsibility for his actions and behaviors and the actions and behaviors of his company and the people working under him. The CEO is accountable to the board of directors and the stock holders, but also the SEC and other government agencies. To suggest that the CEO does not sign off on the accounting books, official documents on stock options, and has no idea of what people under him are doing, paints Steve Jobs as a very poor CEO who cannot even manage his own company.
I'm pretty sure the CFO is more directly responsible for the books than the CEO. And in the Apple stock options case, that person is being held accountable for quite a bit of this.
CEOs cannot be responsible for every little aspect of the company's running, that's why they have their subordinate executives. This isn't like a ship in the Queen's navy where the captain is directly responsible for all actions of the crew. I bring that up as you reminded me of a major plot point of Star Trek VI.So I give you two possible options:
Option #1 Steve Jobs is incompetent and was used as a puppet by those under him.
Option #2 Steve Jobs is not incompetent and knew of everything going on, and is involved somehow but is using a lawyer to protect himself.
Now you're creating a false dichotomy, a common logical flaw.
There are several lawsuits pending over the stock options scandal and they were all targeting Steve Jobs, now almost all of them have been amended to list Apple Computer, Inc as the defendant instead. This topic is a dead horse. The investigation is over, Steve Jobs has been cleared of wrongdoing. You can go back to squirting people with your Zune now. -
Re:Instead of asking...
Because blogs are a way to reach audiences that are not reached through traditional marketing outlets
Yeah, because Apple has a real problem "reaching audiences." I mean, who ever heard of an iPod? They seem to think that TV commercials and word-of-mouth alone will sell the things.
they increase the amount of feedback you receive from your customers, and they provide a way to mine your user base for ideas.
If only there were some website where Apple could gather user opinions and feedback.

Re:iPod killer: Mobile phones with MP3 players
We'll your assuming that Mobile phone makers will pickup MP3 markets; however, what if the MP3 player makers pickup the Mobile phone markets - http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0609phone.html. I might be inclined to say that the current mobile phone companies are too complacent with the vendors and may not perceive the real threat of an outside vendor of stealing a butt load of the market. Imagine if Apple (or anyone for that matter) made the killer mobile phone leaving the current marketers in the dust - that is a huge market and a nice blazing target to shoot for...

Re:The consequences were that you got fired..but it mystifies me how so many would have been "caught" in a situation where they would have admitted this.
If you'r R'd TFA... then you would have learned nothing other than someone has an interest in driving traffic to VarBusiness (whoever they are).
If, on the other hand, you had read the article that the incoherent rambling linked article was talking about then you would have learned that they were overheard talking about having downloaded Leopard in the store, which caused Apple Corporate to launch an investigation.
-
Random Thoughst Having Just Recently AwokenThe actual ThinkSecret web page includes a more complete quote from the fired employee:
All of us know that we violated our NDA and ethics policy. Therefore, because we had the character to tell the truth and to face the consequences of our actions, we were terminated," said one of the fired employees, who spoke with Think Secret on condition of anonymity. "My only question is, if we all lied and denied it would we still be working at Apple today? Even more so, is that the kind of person that Apple wants working for them?
That first part is of interest. They have apparently been fired for violating Apple's NDA and the corporate ethics policy. Last things first: Anyone who has been required to go to "Corporate Ethics Training" at a big US corp like Apple knows that the term Ethics has been redefined by corporate america. It is not about morality, or taking the ethically correct action. It is all about making sure your actions don't get the company sued, and if they do get sued, making sure they have lots of CYA to keep from losing in court and having to pay out mucho moola.
That's all there is to corporate ethics policies, nothing more and certainly nothing on which anyone should being using to judge a person's character.
As for violating Apple's NDA - sounds like they used bittorrent to get a copy of the software from someone else who had originally made it public. That means they did not themselves take an internal copy from Apple and redistribute that. They only did what any other person on the net was capable of - go to a public website like isohunt and use the public information to get into the public torrent for the files.
Because bittorrent makes you a redistributor as well as a simple downloader, I am sure they are technically in violation of Apple's NDA - but realistically their employment at Apple had nothing to do with their downloading of a copy.
Thirdly - Apple, or rather whatever uptight member of lower middle management who actually made the call to fire these guys, is cutting off their nose to spite their face. Any retailer should be ecstatic to have store employees as interested in their own products as these guys (kids?) are. How many times have you all gone to best buy, or compusa or circuit city, etc, etc and been told absolute bullshit by some ignorant "sales associate?" When you've got employees that are so into your own products that they hunt down pre-release versions on the internet just check out for themselves, you need to keep them around, not fire them for trivialities.
Last and probably least, but it made me chuckle, did anyone else notice the plagarism at VAR Business? Their link to the story at ThinkSecret includes an unnecessary "?www.reghardware.co.uk" in the URL, which is another computer news website. Looks like a violation of corporate ethics policy to me. -
What if they had lied?
Would Apple have continued investigating? How would they have investigated? According to the ThinkSecret article this is based on http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0608retailleak.ht
m l? there may be dozens more people getting fired fairly soon. Good on Apple. The product isn't done yet, so it doesn't deserve to be seen. -
Steve Jobs cancer has come back.According to Switch To A Mac, a community weblog about Apple and its products, Steve Jobs may be ill and possibly facing cancer again.
This is an off topic post that is out of the scope of this site but I decided to publish it anyway. Steve Jobs might be ill. He looked somewhat weak. Could the cancer be back? Recall that he was diagnosed and treated for a "very rare" type of pancreatic cancer. Steve conducted the keynote by leveraging comments and demonstrations by three other Apple executives. Steve would present, call on an executive, then reappear. This happened several times. Steve had neither the stamina nor the passion he's put forth in past keynotes. You'll see that Jobs looks much thinner than he did eight months ago at Macworld.
This is very troubling news. I also thought Steve looked unwell during the keynote and it really surprised me that he handed nearly the entire presentation to subordinates. Hopefully all is well with him and he will rebound just like he did before. -
Re:Avoid the bash and move straight to the tangentWhen will "professionals" realize that Word is not meant for all documents? It's great for short documents, posters, etc. But for real professional looking documents it's hard to beat a typesetter like TeX [or LaTeX].
The problem I see is that most people don't want to have to look at markup. A lot of people flat-out don't get the idea. Text that you write in, but it won't show up when you print it...?
I agree, though, that Word isn't well-suited for all purposes. I'm excited to hear about some of the supposed Pages improvements, including a separation of "Word Processing" and "Layout" modes. I've been suggesting something like this for a long time.
I know Office 2007 is doing something similar to this, but I've just always wanted to do those two things completely separately-- sort of like the separation between html and css. One for making sure your data is right, one for laying it out. But again, I don't really want to deal with actually writing the markup.

I've lost all respect for Apple.
Serious. Screw apple and their 'intellectual property' bullshit.
They are sueing their own customers! Nobody does that, not even Microsoft. And it's not like Apple hasn't been doing this before..
Putting DRM in their itunes products and then forcing a application that removes the DRM to be developed outside the United States.
Suing multiple websites and blogs for posting information about up and coming products. These are Apple's FANBOYS they are throwing lawyers at.
And now suing SomethingAwful??!! WTF are they thinking?
This goes to show you that between Microsoft and Apple desktops you should be happy that Microsoft won because Apple is worse then Bill Gates and friends... The only difference is that Apple is too small to cause much damage compared to Microsoft.
Seriously. Who do you think said this:
"The PC wars are over. Microsoft won a long time ago. If I were the head of Apple, I would milk the Mac for all it's worth and then move on the next big thing."
Steve Jobs, of course. And he was right, and is still right.

12" PowerBook G4 remains...
Since my own blurb for this was rejected (no blame on the editors, they were probably flooded with stories on this), I'll state an observation here: The 17" PowerBook G4 is now gone, but the 12" model stll hasn't been updated yet. Is that an indication that the rumors about a 13.3" MacBook to replace the 12" PowerBook and the 14" iBook are true?

Re:Have you ever heard this done before?
Yes, in fact Apple did this last year with their Mac Mini computers http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0509macmini2.html however the upgrade has never been officially announced on their website. The other day I called up the local apple store and they said they are now selling the upgraded mini. At first you could only purchase an upgraded mini through the online Apple store. The general consensis I've seen is that they just wanted to clear out G4 cpu inventory, and this is how they did it.
I've since ditched the idea of buying a mini to upgrade my P4 (the girl at the apple store called the mini "a pc for grandma's") especially now that I'm seeing G5 Powermac's for only $400+ more. I feel it's worth it to be able to upgrade just about everything (except the logic board and chip) rather then be locked into an outdated CPU/Video Chipset. -
Re:patents suggest this is true
nothing exclusive to ThinkSecret has been true for about six months.
They've done about 50/50, I'd say, although I'm not sure how many of those predictions are "exclusive". But the emergence of a large-screen viPod is something that people have been debating for a while now; it wouldn't surprise me if it emerged in one form or another this year. -
Think Secret
http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0506intelmac.html Has anyone else seen this?
-
Well testing has shown...
Acording to this article it seems Windows XP does indeed install on the Intel-based Macs. Apple has indicated they did not cripple the possibility. Why the discussion? I think this has more to do with people who dislike Apple than with actual facts.
-
Re:The MacBook Pro
This link was actually posted on a previous slashdot story, but a simple google search revives it. http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0506intelmac.html
-
Not Powerbooks....IbooksAccording to Think Secret anyway. Their sources have tipped them off about the Mac Mini and photo Ipod before, so it may be reliable....
Those sources have told Think Secret to not rule out the possible release of other Intel-based Macs at Macworld Expo, but that it is more likely the initial release of products with the new processor will be consumer-based products only and not professional, high-end lines, such as PowerBooks and towers, as some Web sites have reported.
The thinking apparently is that business software vendors need more time to port their stuff to Apple X86, but that Apple's own X86 consumer Mac software is ready to go. -
Re:Google an accessory to Walmart's evil?By not positioning it as a replacement for a Windows PC, but as an additional accessory, it doesn't have to replace every esoteric piece of software available for Windows.
That is exactly what Apple figured out at least five years ago. That is why Apple is staking its future on media-centered products like the iPod, Front Row, and the soon-to-be-announced Media Center Mac Mini
And it is what I've already figured out in my household. I keep one old Windows machine around to run the CDs that my kids get on the back of cereal boxes. Anyone can pick up an adequate machine for this purpose out of garbage bins. Then I have Mac and Linux machines around when I want to do real work -- organizing family movies and photo albums on the Mac and doing web development in Linux.
Packaging windows alternatives as media appliances rather than Windows replacements is the proven way to get non-MS computers into people's homes. Apple is already getting rich doing it. There is plenty of room for Linux and others to play a role on the lower-price side of the same market.
-
Apple
I predict that, on January 10, 2006, Apple Computer will release an Intel-based iBook.
-
More on that
"Reliable sources have further confirmed recently to Think Secret that new iBooks and Mac minis--as well as iPod shuffles--will debut at Macworld Expo San Francisco next month. Apple's new Mac mini and iBook are expected to be among the first--if not the first--systems to feature Intel's new mobile processor, code-named Yonah." -
Re:In Design for Over a YearIn the article (yes, I still read them) the creative spokesdroid states "This has been in design for over a year."
Its too bad the iPod's form factor has pretty much been the same since coming out in 2001.
A search of ThinkSecret's archives puts a start date on rumors of the video iPod around the time of MacWord Expo 2003.
-
Re:A little late to the game, both CNN and Apple
Wow, a blowhard with all the answers... how quaint.
Shadduppp!!! Jackass!!!
"The new Mac mini project, code-named Kaleidoscope, will feature an Intel processor and include both Front Row 2.0 and TiVo-like DVR functionality.": From here.
Opinions are like assholes, everybody has 'em and nobody wants to hear 'em. -
XBox 360
Could part of this sudden rush at Apple, as described by Think Secret, be in response to the XBox 360? As it is, the 360 is currently the closest thing to Apple's ideal behind the "digital hub".
The 360 software seems to accept almost any device you can throw at it. I imagine with a large external USB 2.0 drive connected to it, one could easily store their entire dvd collection on it and play it back using the 360 itself.
Also, the new XBox Live Marketplace could easily be made into the next iTunes Music Store, offering both music and tv shows on demand for a small price. Obviously bandwidth isn't an issue for Microsoft, since they already allow free downloads of game demos to the 360... many of which weigh in at 500MB-1GB in size.
I think we've only seen the surface of the 360's overall capabilities so far. The next year or so should be very interesting. -
eMarkMonitor
"eMarkMonitor can not only help you make your mark but it also can aid you in protecting it. The comany provides software used to manage intellectual property on the Internet, including applications for brand management and trademark management, as well as protecting Web site domains and enterprise DNS information. eMarkMonitor also provides fraud protection applications used to detecting, analyze, and combat phishing attacks. The company's customers come from a wide range of fields and typically are attorneys, marketing and brand managers, and channel managers."
Y'know, if I was a domain-squatter who wanted to present a sophisticated face in order to target the high-end market, that's exactly the kind of copy I'd put on my website...
But Slashdot wouldn't be Slashdot if it didn't hype every trial balloon Google sent up. Soon you'll be seeing the following on high school logic tests:- Slashdot is to Google as Think Secret is to ???
-
I think something's being overlooked here
Even though a lot of you seem to be bitching and moaning about the quality of the video encoding encoding, I think we're missing the so called "bigger picture" here. The ThinkSecret article pointed out that there would be another iPod released later on in the year with a widescreen display and presumably with better encoding. Now while I don't have any evidence other than this article to support that, it would stand to reason from a marketing perspective that Apple would hold out on rolling that better version out, because you don't roll out the best product that you have and then be left without anything to build on it.
So I think that they released this version as a primer for consumers, to get them accustomed to video on their iPod's, and then when they release the widescreen higher res version, people will be more willing to buy it.
Just my take on it though :). -
Re:Does it really matter? So when FoxNews decides to see what various blogs are saying today, and they put several of these blogs on the big screen behind the desk, does that count as their entire viewership reading the blog? Tell ya what, when the newspaper's readership reaches as high as 1/2 of some of these blogs...
Seriously, though, one thing to consider is that an average newspaper on even a slow newsday consists of hundreds, if not thousands, of articles, columns and features. Would it be fairer to compare the readership of a blog with the readership of one professional journalist's articles? Or should we consider what the distribution of a paper would be if it consisted solely of one journalist's works? Hell, we all know many newspapers' subscriber base would plummet if they didn't carry daily comics.
There are quite a few online "news sites" that could end up in uncertain waters under this situation. Think Secret probably has a readership that greatly exceeds many newspapers, and we've certainly seen them in this situation before. Should the original articles on this site - such as book and game reviews - be granted any such shield? Maybe the game publisher disagrees with your statement that the plot for their latest game is poorly acted and an almost word-for-word reproduction of a two-bit action novel. That article you wrote had to pass before the eyes of an editor before reaching the front page, and the readership of this site is enough to kill many a newspaper's website; why shouldn't it earn protection as well?

Re:Not just videosTV shows (like Lost) one day after they air, and you know damn well what's next... movies.
According to ThinkSecret (which tends to be pretty reliable):
The video playback capability, which sources say is in fact available in current models but is disabled, will be geared towards watching broadcast content, video podcasts, and other shorter videos, but Apple will not be offering movies to purchase at this time. Instead, the company is hoping to roll out a movie store later in 2006 when the "real" video iPod, which will sport a larger widescreen display wrapped in a new casing, will debut.
-
NewsSince nobody has posted about it yet, Think Secret seems to be fairly confident about the specs of today's announcement:
2.46 inch color screen
Resolution: 320x240
40GB for $299
80GB for $399Although it will be able to play videos, the "real" video iPod isn't coming until next year, when they also roll out a video store at the same time.

Thinksecret is contradicting itself...That's strange, on the 5th of September Thinksecret claimed that we wouldn't see new powerbooks this year. http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0509g5.html
Quote:
No PowerBook revision?Sources are also reporting that the pending Power Mac revision will be the last Mac upgrade of the calendar year. Contrary to other reports, Apple's PowerBook line, last revised in February with only incremental upgrades, will likely not see an upgrade before Macworld Expo San Francisco in January 2006, at the earliest.

Re:Macs
Mac is going intel. When it is finally a reality (any day now, see the other article on the code to intel currently discussed on /. here http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/13/ 1957219&tid=179&tid=3And the details are here http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0509builds.html)
When this happens, mac hardware will go up in price or be pulled out of the market completely for lack of necessity.Everyone will be using Linux or Mac Os on their $100 pc's from china then.
And it should not matter whether he 'knows' mac hardware or not, I mean, what is the difference between knowing an intel based pc video card, or a mac one? Negligible I would think in this case.
:) -
Really?I've not R'd TFA (reg required, and all that), but this sounds a lot like the news on Think Secret a few days ago. In short, they have signed a deal whereby FreeScale are required to supply PowerPC chips to Apple until 2008, but Apple are not required to buy them.
Apple have stated that the low end will switch to Intel first, so I don't really know what the basis for this `story' is. It seems much more likely that, if they are extending their purchasing options for G4s to 2008, they will stop selling G4s at the end of this year. This would then give them a supply of G4s to use in replacements until the end of the 3-year AppleCare period for the last G4 units sold.

Groupware, open source, OS X, and everything elseThis topic is very close to my heart.
I'm the sole IT guy at a medium-sized nonprofit. We're currently using a POP3 provider for email and need a better solution, which is a bit harder because we're all-OS X. Outlook isn't an option, Entourage support for exchange isn't 100% there, exchange is overkill for us anyways, and I have zero Windows Server/Exchange admin experience. (*NIX all the way here...)
I've been seriously researching and demoing MANY solutions for the better part of a year and I've pretty much settled on:
--Communigate Pro for Email, with either Apple Mail (most likely) or Entourage as an IMAP client. (Currently using Entourage for POP3.)
--Meeting Maker for calendaring and to-do. It has a native OS X client and good web access.
--A hand-built web interface to the shared files on our OS X server.
We just need the basics--calendar, shared contacts, email, remote access to shared files--and they need to be rock-solid stable.
Basically, Hula Server is *exactly* what I need, and I think it's what a LOT of SMB's need too. And indeed, there are rumors that it'll be rolled into future OS X server releases.
Unfortunately I need a solution now, and while Hula is just not ready for serious production use. I can see moving to Hula down the road when it's proven and even more kickass.
