Initially I got a couple of invitations I could give away, every couple of weeks, and it was easy to find close friends to give them to. Then I found I had seven invitations this week and had run out of obvious candidates. I tried gmailswap, but the interesting ones (like a pound of Kona coffee) went too quickly, and the others were uninteresting to me. So I sent a note to my orkut friends, and quickly had well over a dozen requests for accounts despite including a disclaimer pointing to gmail-is-too-creepy.com :). I gave away the ones I had, and surprisingly got a few more the
very next day. I still have a queue of about 5 people I owe accounts
to.
PS. This was a really, really nice Slashdot article, with a treasure trove of gmail information. Well done.

OK, I was one of the sheeple who used to go a few times weekly to the gmail website to check things out.
But I awoke earlier this week to my Yahoo premium account suddenly offering two, not one, gigabytes of email storage... and all without the (overblown) privacy concerns and advertising. *And* I only pay $19.95/yr. for it.
I'm not (or at least don't need to be) interested in Gmail anymore. I've moved on and Yahoo has succeeded in taking the wind out of Gmail's sails, at least for me.

Yahoo now offers 100 mb to all free accounts, and 2 gigabytes to premium accounts. I love competition.
and have been unable to get detailed information about the beta program, how are people that are paying or trading possesions certain that all the accounts won't disappear when the beta is over in order to start the program with a clean slate?

What I noticed was that as soon as Yahoo announced they were upping their email limit, Gmail started letting me invite about 5 people a day.
Understand that I already have a backlog of 10 slashdotters waiting for accounts, but I labeled them all and as the invites trickle in, I'll pass them on...my friends and family and irc buddies are already hooked up.

Spymac.com has free hosting, 1GB of email, none of the privacy concerns of gmail, and a very easy to use site.

One thing I noticed about GMail was that it was, at least for a short time, a small commercial market within itself. The market ebbed and flowed depending on if invites had become availble that day or not. Originally, there were few accounts, and I managed to snatch one up thanks to my Blogger account - while it lasted, my invites were gold. Before the market "crashed" a few weeks ago, I managed to get unlimited virtual hosting and some nude pictures from a college CS girl who wanted one for "geek cool". My, it was great.
Of course, then the market crashed. So now GMail Swap and others are worthless. But I've been using my invites for another purpose now - I currently have 30 GMail addresses to my name, including some interesting ones. I figure, although the rarity may not exist in having an account, the rarity could exist in having the account you want. Commercialism rises again.
How does one get invited. I crave the invitation. I am almost tempted to start my own Google just so I could then invite myself to gmail.

I already have 'unlimited' storage (currently 50G free, but I could easily drop another drive in the server if I felt it was getting short) for my email, with pop3, imap and squirrelmail access to it from anywhere.

I'm not sure how good squirrelmail is at searching through the old mail; perhaps I should look into that. If it's that important I can always ssh in and grep through the mail directories anyway

The success of Gmail is not the amount of space. That's called a gimmick. The success of Gmail is its searchability.
In the long run, having a gig of mail is pointless if you can't find what you're looking for. Assume you can have all the space in the world and you didn't delete a single email. How will you find the email sent sometime ago that you can't remember from a girl you can't remember who conversed with you on craigslist but you did remember her fantasy about being your naughty bukkake star?

For those of you who want powerful search of your 10000s of messages locked up in a work exchange server, try Lookout soft . I've used it with about 12000 messages on the exchange server and local outlook folders, and never had a search take more than 0.2 seconds. Still free while in beta mode.

...what the big deal is? What on earth is Google going to offer me above what my plain ol' POP3/IMAP + Opera/Pegasus/whatever client already offers? What's it going to offer that my freebie Operamail account doesn't offer?
Maybe I'm not one of the cool kids. Seems to me that all my computing is done on my laptop, and having *all* my important mail (ie. the university account, my permanent email address) POP3'd to my laptop is just *perfect*. I can search it six ways to Sunday, it's always here, it's on a secure system, etc.
So... why gmail?

I've been going at the gmail machine for over 8 hours ... now that slashdot has picked it up, it's probably a waste of time to continue. I was able to refresh every 3 or 4 seconds ... now I'm getting 10, 12, 20 second delays.
...You can "star" incoming messages based on criteria. Edit a filter. "Star It" is one of the filter options.
Problem solved?
The interface is really fast. A lot of functions don't require real page re-loads.
I do need to check POP mail (IMAP would be grand), but I realize they're probably holding off on that until the real release.
I'm glad someone values keyboard commands again.
Laugh... one of the guys on #gmail on Efnet had a small VB app that guessed for you, just leave it on overnight. :)

Just got my GMail account yesterday. Had already sent off an email to my contacts telling them my exclusive new email address. Then I found out GMail doesn't support the Opera browser (or vice versa) yet. Bummer, I love Opera like I love my family. So I download this Pop Goes The GMail program, and it is sorely disappointing. I haven't checked it with other clients, but it doesn't seem to function well at all with Opera's mail client. Hotmail Popper was fantastic in it's compatability and reliability. So I will wait patiently for Opera to play nicely with GMail. In the mean time, I've got to use IE. I am however thinking of having my work email forwarded to my GMail account for it's search abilities alone.

I see Gmail as a novelty item right now. More of a way for people to brag about their gig of email. My pop3 account holds 15 meg, which is enough since I only give it out to personal friends (and the Dilbert Newsletter ;-)). I use hotmail for registering for services and all the spam goes there. I am muchly content with my non-Gmail services.

Since I am a Treo user, I still valued having the ability to check my account from my phone. But I also really liked the Gmail interface when I was at my desktop. So here's what I did:
I was pleased to see that Google allows you to override the reply-to address, so I immediately changed that to my current email address.
I then deleted my IMAP account and set up a mail forwarding alias that directs any incoming messages to my Gmail account as well as a pop account on the hosting provider's server.
I use the POP account to check mail from my Treo, and it also gets picked up by my Outlook client for permanent archiving.
The best part is I was able to switch my email exclusively to Gmail without anyone noticing the switch. This is top notch stuff.. Google has done something extraordinary here.

They are making their webmail a playfield like is the domain name ownership one, and if it last months a to have really big webmail mailboxes, ligth webpages, intelligent spam/virus filtering and threaded mail view will be so common than when it will be finally out could be no news.
I even wonder if in the open source webmail market not exist already one that provides a good part of what gmail will give who knows when.
At this moment i would open the registration in gmail, not by invitation, but at will, still leave there the "beta" mark to show that still could be rough edges, but to accaparate the market before is too late. What if i.e. the actual Teoma come out around the same time google started? still google would be the #1?
Well, anyway, i could be wrong, not tested yet so i can't say how hard or easy could be duplicated with advantages, but so far for non-users is almost vapourware.
All fresh out now! Anyone who mailed me and didn't get one, I'll keep you on file and as soon as the invite counter resets, I'll hook you up.

How do you think the spam filters work? Magic ESP SPAM detection?
No, it scans your mail - just like GMail does when it's filtering SPAM of considering ads to feed up.
The only email providers that do not scan mail are the ones that allow anything to pass.

I've been experimenting with a Python interface to Gmail. Just released version 0.1 today. Hope it's helpful to someone.
I have one invite. First one to respond to this post gets it. I can queue up the others for when I get more, if they are willing to wait.

Gmail Machine makes you hit refresh until the number 1337 commes up. Anyone have a refresh perl script to do this until it captures the string? Looks like nothing complicated; I may try and do it unless someone else has one already built.

Man, I love it when people start whining about a computer searching their e-mail. So i guess yahoo dosen't have a spam filter then? What, hotmail has to parse the text of every e-mail before it determines that that message about penis extensions is spam. How do you think e-mail programs work out that not every mail saying 'Hey, haven't talked to you in a while' is spam
G-mail's problem is not that it scans your e-mail, but rather that the good people are honest and upfront with what they are doing.
I'm sure people would all be thrilled about a virus check if it was billed as 'automatic file parser.' Sure, it might seem weird having a conversation about your favorite jewish actor and getting an add for 'learn hebrew in 24 hours' but that's only because google is utilising what everyone else has. And their only crime was the niavety that people would find this useful. Had they said 'magic pixies work out what you want and sudgest how to get it, while you browse your e-mail,' the tinfoil hate wearing community would embrace it (after all, fairies can't get through tinfoil!).
G-mail is a wonderful, not only because of the unprecedented amoutn of free space, but because of it's intuative and innovative features that help you organise your e-mail while still having that sexy, clean, not 'all up in yo' face' look google is so good for.
If i had to chooose between microsoft and google, i pick the one who vows to 'do no evil' and, so far, has done nothing to make me think otherwise

That python script to transfer your mbox files to gmail doesn't work very well. I'm trying it on the unix machines at my office and it won't read my mbox files...sigh, I don't really want to screw around with the source code now...maybe I will try it at home.

If you're really paranoid, just PGP your messages. Granted there's no direct plugin I know of yet, but I'm sure it's about to come. Then again there's always c&p into your email.
The propensity for unencrypted emails to be read and intercepted has existed on the net, but people just ignored the possibility or figured the probability of it happening them is low.
If it bothers you there's an indefinate log of your email, encrypt it--So what if google shows you nothing by PGP ads on the right side of your screen ?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this already. Personally, I think GMail is fine and dandy except that I want to use Mail to read and send, and can completely do without the web interface aside from road trips.
I checked out the PC Pop goes the Gmail to look for clues how they did it, but can't find anything useful. I've also tried using the httpmail plugin (designed for Hotmail and Mail), but am not sure how to configure it.
So, how about it? I hear they're planning on POP for some point in the future, but I want to start using GMail as my privacy account now!

Want secure email? Get a cert and encrypt your messages. Only send messages to people on your same server. Make sure no one else has access to the server. Only you. Because as soon as that message leaves your client it is vulnerable to attack.
Now is this likely to occur? Unless you are some sort of leet cracker duude or on some govy watch list or undersurvelllience guess what... Your rantings and "insights" have less value to the BigBrother complex than they do to the poor sap to which they were sent.

Safari support only got added a couple of weeks ago and it's likely that Opera support is just around the corner.
Remember, the service is still in beta and far from being close to a full roll-out (there isn't even a "save as draft" option at the moment) so the current Opera incompatibility shouldn't be taken as an indication that Gmail will always be unusable to Opera users.

... but it might not be easy to store label information in IMAP ...
Ideally it would be able to use IMAP as its backend to stay compatible with other clients

Yes, the spymac interface is quite bloated, slow, and mac oriented.
But...I pop3 down to my machine, and leave the mail on spymacs server, for searching, access when I'm away from home, backed up on their dime.
It does have it's uses.
Some people may associate that current logo with "rebooting" but that may only serve as a mnemonic...

I just refreshed a few times (they changed server - and apparently it can take the slashdot load) - and I got 1337! But after submitting your email, you get a 404 error. Great.

How long till some uber-nerd builds a filesystem that uses GMail accounts for storage space? For each account you have your filesystem grows by 1gb, and you could raid different accounts so when google shuts you down for abuse, you don't loose your data. It just needs to do a lot of caching and email uuencoded data chunks to yourself to store the bits. I think its a winner... I should patent that idea.

Goodness, all the groveling for Gmail invites. I should change the cartoon so that the last stage in devolution is not a mere Gmail logo, but something like a Slashdot logo superimposed on a Gmail logo.

For me its the other way.. I have a gmail account but its only for novelty. Gmail users started getting invites quite regularly from last week or so.. Gmail's nice(damn fast) but I need one feature it doesn't offer-IMAP mail. I have a 1GB hosting account and only 50MB is used for hosting.. so the rest is available for email.
A few days back, my yahoo account was near its limit and I received a warning about it. The very next email was from yahoo again, this time to notify that my storage had increased.
But the madness for gmail accounts is amazing. In orkut there are like 40 communities setup to beg for invitations. The largest is 1000 odd members and there's even 1 that says "we hate gmail" so that some gmail member with invites might stop by and have pity on those pathetics(is that a word?).
My wild guess about when gmail is available to the public?- About a week before Google's IPO.
It would give users enough time to use gmail and probably become interested in buying a few shares( this reasoning's wrong but who knows).
The other guess is that gmail will not become public until a much later time. Once it becomes open to the public, millions will sign up for accounts.. maybe google wants to do it in a phased manner. Invites might continue to increase from say 3 a day to 10-20. This is a lot more orderly and won't overburden the servers.. I don't know, I'm just talking out of my ass.
About two years ago, my colleagues and I at Cape Clear devised something called GoogleMail. It was an extremely simple email interface to the Google API. You just send an email to google@capeclear.com and receive a reply with the top ten search results. I just checked it, and it still works. As you can see by the news coverage (scroll down), everyone loved the idea, even though it was practically useless. The only exceptions seemed to be visually-disabled people and those in countries whose governments blocked Web access to Google. We were contacted by Google and asked to change the name, which was fair enough. It now goes by CapeMail. I imagine a scenario, though, where somebody at Google brings up our little invention at a meeting. "GoogleMail? They can't call it that. Get legal on the phone." Legal calls us, and we change the name. However, the phrase GoogleMail sticks in somebody's head back at Google corporate HQ. Two years later, Gmail is borne. Coincidence? Probably, but it's fun to speculate.

All ACTIVE blogger users. For example, my one-post blog (I ditched it for my /. journal quickly), Score:-5, Offtopic (score-5ot), didn't get it, because it's been inactive since October, and that was the only activity on it.
There is another way of quickly uploading all your messages to Gmail (or any other service for that matter): The Mutt Email Client. Mutt has a feature that I haven't seen in any other email client, and that I wouldn't want to miss ever: Bouncing. That's similar to forwarding, except that the message stays completely unmodified - upon receiving, all the difference you see is an additional "Received:" entry in the mail header. Very cool, and extremely useful!

Open source? Damn. I'd say grab a copy of Windows Server 2003, and Exchange, and set it up. Almost full Outlook functionality, and it's got a lot of those features.
Now, if there were just an M2-like webmail interface (I use Opera M2, and it's indexing capabilities are like GMail on steroids...)
I don't consider Gmail ready, but it is great even with the afore-mentioned issues. Conversations rock, and search, while not as good as Mail, is quick and easy. Keyboard shortcuts and auto-fill email addresses add important features to webmail that I would normally only expect from a POP or IMAP email account.

Just a quick note, the chance of getting a Gmail account on Gmail machine is one in 30000 on any given reload. It would take 20794 reloads to have just a %50 chance of getting a GMail account. If one downloads Opera and sets the reload on the gmail machine to every second, that's two weeks. Now, admittedly, one could be smarmy and open a whole host of opera windows reloading every second, but we don't even know if the reloading window would blow away the winning announcement.
On the other hand, one could spend much less time writing clever limericks in the hopes that someone will give them an account

I'd guess that the real market for gmail is corporate email and the ability to track and recover correspondence over a long time-span. To be effective it has to be shaken out very thoroughly and that looks to be what Google is doing with it.

Every single email you send anywhere on the internet is read in it's entirety by at least one machine not in your control. That machine can trivilaly copy and archive the contents of your message and leave NO TRACE.
If you're paranoid about GMail, but you're happy to send unencrypted email to other addresses, then you're an idiot, that's all there is to say.

I got my invite a while back, a couple weeks. I've since given out (for free, of course) over 25 invites. Had I sold all of them, in hindsight I see, I could have made more than $200, perhaps much more in how they were selling back then. But I'm a nice guy. I say keep Gmail free.
Alright - I'm too lazy to post my myriad of responses to many of hte above comments... so I'll just post once.
First - I feel sorry for the guy that mentioned he had some invitations. No doubt his gmail account's 1 gig limit is being tested by the torrent of email from eager slashdotter geeks desperate to get at one of his invitations.
Next issue.. For those that really just want a fat email box for free - I highly suggest going over to Spymac, or even Lycos - both of which offer 1 gig mailboxes. I personally hate ALL webmail, forgoing it for the sake of using Thunderbird. That being the case, I rarely experience the same problems with email services that other people do who prefer webmail. If you use an external mail program - spymac is great. If you prefer webmail... well, keep trying to get a gmail invite.
Some of the people are complaining about Spymac asking for lots of personal information. Am I the only one that has a fake name and address for use in sign-ups? When I was a teen, I was worried that companies would check my fake info, track me down, and pistol-whip me or something. Then, after a few times doing it, I realized that human eyes probably never actually see my fake information. My information is harvested, shared, then printed on junk mail ALL by computers. So, it's easy to get away with fake addresses. Although I feel sorry for whoever lives at 999 Mybunghole Lane, Redneck, GA 31337. They've probably gotten a TON of junk mail for "Joe Momma." But here I am sitting pretty, with all my free internet and email accounts. No secret police have come after me yet.
Lastly, I am pissed at the creator of that Gmail Machine, as well as the person who added it to slashdot for my weak mind to stumble upon. I already have two Gmail accounts - and here I am just reloading and reloading and reloading. I feel like an old woman in vegas at the slot machines... or a college girl clicking away at Diamond Mine/Bejewelled. It's mine-numbingly addictive. Damn you slashdot and Gmail machine... damn you....
Post it your e-mail if you want it.

So, I guess it's inevitable that someone's going to make a site that lets you send to GMail while avoiding it. Imagine checking your GMail and getting a message saying:
which would be a link to a web page which held the message for, say, two weeks. The service could be set up as a mail relayer, of sorts, where it would be easy to reply to GMail people. For example, the site could be, say, notgmail.com. Then, when replying to someone at GMail, you just add "not" to the address and the service would handle saving your message (only for two weeks, remember) and sending the real Gmail recipient the notice that they've got mail waiting.
I'm surprised that something like this isn't here already. Just imagine GMail's archives getting flooded with "You have received....".
All ISPs come with something called an e-mail account. Most of them allow you to store the e-mails on your computer getting around any limits. "Yes you google lets you search your entire e-mail." That is certainly a wow factor and one that almost made me want to go to g-mail, until I realised Thunderbird and Mozilla did the exact same thing. "Yes but google let's you have threads" which surprisingly enough, as does thunderbird and mozilla. "Yes but gmail let's you read e-mails anywhere" but I don't need that. I can have Thunderbird keep my e-mails in the e-mail server I use for however many days I want. Currently that's until I move it from my inbox folder (which I do when the information is no longer important and I only need it for archival purposes). I don't need archived e-mails except when I'm on my home computer. There were two things that I was excited about with gmail. Threads and the search function. But now that I can do both, I don't care anymore.
It seems to be under the wheels of the Slashdot effect (volatile hyperlinking all-right); while the google cache carries the page, there's no way of getting the file.

Anyone else musing with the idea that gmail is about more than free webmail to the world? Maybe it is Google's shot at stopping spam...
I know, i must be some google fanboy, but maybe i am.
I'm just thinking that maybe the 'Report Spam' button saves to a central database. Once Gmail becomes very popular Google will have a very up to date list of the current spam and spammers.
Essentially farming us Gmail users for spam addresses, IPs', and language patterns.
They can then offfer out the constantly updated database as a (pay) service to anyone else.
They seem to do well with sorting large amounts of data for relevance..
Google owns Orkut, Blogger.com, the largest search engine on the 'net, and is now offering free, high quality web-based email accounts with a gig of storage. Except for a few lone voices, I haven't seen any serious discussion about why this huge corporation is spending so much resources on providing these services for free.
The advertising revenue couldn't possibly amount to a significant fraction of the costs involved with these services. The value must lie in the personal information that people are donating to Google, Inc.. What are their plans for it? They obviously plan to datamine it - but how will and how can it be used? What new knowledge can be generated by correlating and cross-referencing your orkut, blogger, gmail and google search information?
It is troublesome that it seems to be popular and hip to be totally unconcerned about privacy. Attitudes like "we have none anyways" seem to prevail, and its funny to criticize those who voice some concern as tinfoil-hat-black-helicopter-seeing schitzos. It looks like people have forgotten that privacy matters. Like many other companies that try to collect personal information, Google's privacy policy is subject to change at any time. This makes it almost meaningless! It is effectively the same as saying, "We respect your privacy right at this moment, so have complete trust in us. Tomorrow we might change our minds."

Here I am, a hardcore email user since...1986. I have sent more email to more people for a longer time than 99.9% of everybody, and I can't get a gmail invite inside of two months? Heck, I give one lecture per semester on the glories of Google. But what makes it extra-ironic is that I'm a psychology professor, and it now appears that my best chance to get an invite is to engage in unrewarded bar-press behavior until I get a lucky number. I should know better, but excuse me while I refresh this other page here a few thousand more times...

Why do people keep hyping the features of google? We can do all of that stuff on our computers for free with little security/privacy concerns.
I use OSX's mail ap to get all my mail from however many accounts, including my yahoo accounts. I can then search message content, from, subject whatever. Forever. On the privacy of my own machine. And since I have about 150gigs of free space at the moment, 1gig from google isn't a selling point.
When not on my own machine, I can use my isp provided webmail aps to view mail. But now that wireless access is so pervasive, many of us just carry our own computers with us wherever we go anyway. Gone are the days of dropping into a library when on the road to use their machines to check email: now we just flip open our laptops at the library and download our own. Webmail is just not necessary anymore. Wireless is killing the need for browser based aps like calendars, mail, and even banking info (just use quicken to download from all your accounts and view it one single ap instead of going to a bunch of webpages to see all your stuff).
Fact is, despite all concerns, Gmail *is* becoming wildly popular. Things are going at such a rate here that if anyone is deluded enough to not accept any email from a Gmail account, he's basically banishing himself from email in general.

Has anyone actually tried the utilities listed in the original post? The lack of import and export options from gmail is a real limiting factor (I already have a lot of mail I'd like to search). What happens if/when google goes under? How do we extract our gigabyte? These utilities look very promising, but slashdotter stress-testing seems in order...
I was invited for a Gmail account yesterday, and it worked fine. Today, I cannot access Gmail anymore! It says 'Oops, unable to perform the requested operation, try again' or 'document contains no data'. I'm using Firefox 0.9 and I checked the 'don't ask my password for two weeks' option. I even tried with MSIE, didn't help. (By the way, although I haven't used MSIE for months, it somehow managed to get infected, I got popups from the moment I left the Control Panel and made it an IE window!) I guess it's still beta... (Gmail, not IE ;-))

- The GMail team says that the Full GMail (whenever that comes) will not be Opera compatible, but
- GMail Beta has limited functionality in Opera
- Firefox is better than Opera (I actually upgraded after getting my GMail invite... it's everything Opera is, with lower RAM hogging and smarter tabs. The different search extensions kick Opera's hinder. Thunderbird (seperate but integrated mail client) is nicer than M2 (not that I use my other email accounts any more)
Believe me, I thought I was a diehard Opera user until I started with Firefox. All of my bookmarks imported automagically. It's faster, free, and no Opera ad banner needs to be ignored/cracked.Although I took more like 40 tries, I still hit pretty quickly.
And I, too, still haven't gotten a code... Hoax?
Do you think Google will make a Gmail app just like they did with their search engine? That would be pretty neat. Maybe combine it with their search appliance. You plug this device into the corporate network, configure, and then all your users can enjoy Google seaching the intranet and have a nice webmail client with the same excellent searching.
Who knows, just a thought.

I think I'm going to cry. I was trying the Gmail Machine lotto. . . I was hitting refresh so fast all I saw was a blink of a page with a big yellow font that said "Winner!" with a text entry box below it. Then 1/5 of a second later, I tapped my touch pad and the page refreshed. I think I need a moment of reflection.
Just becuase you HAVE a hotmail account doesn't mean you USE it. All my personal e-mail goes to my own mailserver under my desk. The 7 or so hotmail accounts are just spam-catchers. Mmmmm...3 years virtually spam free.

hey all, i keep getting new invites on a fairly regular basis, if you just head-on over to my blog, find the "GMail Invites" post and add a comment with some info as to why u want a gmail account and a valid email address (feel free to use creative obfuscation to protect yourselves from spam crawler bots).
I can't guarantee you an invite but your chances should be pretty good. I'll favor in that order (mostly), people who have a blog on blogger.com, people who have at least bothered to register with blogger.com to place comments, people I've marked as /. friends, people who've marked me as their friend, unless i change my mind :)

Google is giving out GMail invites like candy at the moment, you can get anywhere from 3-10 invites every other day or so (at least I do). Of course every invite you use is recorded, since it adds the inviters address to the invitees contact list automatically. With this by-invitation-only strategy they've managed to drum up an amazing amount of hype and discussion on blogs, mailing lists and message boards all over the net. Of course it also helps that GMail, in it's true Google-like fashion, is pretty damn good. That means there's a high demand for it, it's the latest in-thing and you don't want to be left out.
So, with everyone inviting their friends, who in turn invite their friends and so on, Google is sitting on a gold-mine that would make any data-miner drool. They've probably got the biggest social networking dataset ever compiled right now. I'm just thankful it's Google and not Hotmail or Yahoo. As someone else already said, the 1GB storage is just a gimmick, it's the Google brand that matters.

So, in order to prevent company A from storing and potentially reading your e-mail, you're opting to let company B store it instead? What's to keep company B from reading the messages it has stored? And what's to keep company B from being ordered to hand over all the messages it has stored to some government agency?

So what - I don't care about any single email being exposed to someone's eyes. But I do worry if someone has access to ALL of my email all the time - I even wouldn't care if they would read it, but I do not like to be analyzed and profiled via content of my email.

This is really a stupid argument - OF COURSE they won't because they can't possibly get enough humans to read gazillons of messages in millions of accounts!
It is impossible, it'd be too expensive and it wouldn't work because humans can't analyze huge amounts of data.
When will people realize that it is FAR WORSE that AI bots "read" (analyze, parse, whatever) your email because:
a) they don't "forget"
b) they can easily "read" all emails of all accounts
c) it is cost effective (essentially free) to use them for any and all purpose they see fit.
I'm not claiming they are doing bad things with it, but they certainly have all the tools they need.
So those who mind would probably prefer to keep their email on less creepy a place (one that doesn't analyze your contacts, URLs in your email and content of your messages to show you ads and whatnot).
In all honesty, if you have something that you don't want read by anyone, and don't want stored for eternity, then you probably shouldn't be emailing it at all.

This isn't meant to start a Bush v. Kerry flame war; all I want is for a Kerry supporter to actually promote Kerry's policies, not criticize Bush's. I figure a Gmail invite might encourage some smart readers to participate in a respectful discourse. My apologies for taking the Gmail discussion off-topic.
I wrote a 2 minute script (perl and wget are our friends) and let it run overnight. Their server started out really speedy, then started getting laggy so I shortened wget's timeout to 60 seconds (900 seconds? please :)

... over approximately 10 hours the script iterated just under 30,000 times before getting an invite, which averaged out 50 hits per minute for me. If you assume most of the heavy hitters had a similar script (maybe, maybe not) running for the same time period where the server got 20,000,000 hits, that means 666 scripters ;)
... only 1 process at a time, it gave the server a minute to respond, and it slept for 1 second between requests. No forked processes, no running as fast as it can. Did I defeat the "feel" of the process, sure, but someone had to be expecting it because there was nothing in the HTML that made this at all difficult. This means I would guess I could have gotten closer to 1 hit per second if I'd -tried- but there didn't seem like much point.

NOTE: I made my script relatively friendly
I want to give a HEARTY congratulations for having a server with a dynamic page that took the load like a champ. No images had to help, but it was still pumping out >5K per request at 550-600 requests per second. Not an amazing feat technically, just good planning, but appreciated. I was quite surprised to see it had made it through the night (my invite came @ 8:30am, almost exactly when I woke to the thought of "hey, wonder if I got an invite?", maybe I accidentally invoked Telepathy::Broadcast).
And before someone goes "why did you waste your time for a freakin Gmail account", I spent 5 * the time needed to write the script to write this post

Despite your post, there's nothing invalid or wrong with making a choice based on the "lesser of two evils" concept. I suspect that many of Kerry's votes will come from people choosing to pick the "not-so-great" option over the "really-really-terribly-horribly-bad" option... And that's OK.

For those of you who are interested. It's called G-Mailto.
It is really simple. It associates mailto: html links with GMail. So when you see a link like this on the web:

You can click it and have the GMail compose window open up instead of something like Outlook Express that doesn't work with GMail. If you are not logged in to GMail it will bring you to the login screen and then redirect you to the Compose Page.
I'm using it right now on my Windows XP machine and it works perfectly. Supposedly works fine on Win9x/ME as well.
It's free, open-source, comes with an installer/uninstaller, and you can always switch back and forth between using it from your control panel. Under Internet Options > Programs Tab > Email. After you install G-Mailto, it will be in that list along with any other mail program you use.

Here's my script for continuously refreshing the page and watching for 1337 in the results. No guarantee this will work at all since I don't know what is actually required when you get the winning page. I just dump the winning html into a file and hopefully it can be used to claim the prize somehow. Arrgh, didn't log in...The AC post describing Usermail's antispam features (basically I get maybe one spam every couple months so I don't have to worry about it), that was me.
So it's the same client (Freeshell also uses SquirrelMail for webmail, but they also offer Pine if you use the shell account).
Seeing as they DON'T check for false positives, I'm afraid of the same problem I've got with SoftHome. I'd rather have no server-side filtering at all, and do it all on my computer.

Well, server side filtering has the advantage of knowing the sender's IP and querying SPF, saves from sucking a ton of spam across a modem link, and is the only option for webmail. So for me it's a must-have.
Having said that, I think the ideal is some tweakability on server-side filtering. Even a selection box with 0% (no filtering) to 100% (most aggressive filtering but with risk of false positives) would help. If you, for example, expect mail from people who run their own SMTP on a DSL connection, you can choose a lower setting (just enough to keep webmail useable) and rely on client side filtering to weed out the rest while whitelisting your address book. If, like me, you get mail from fairly predictable sources, you can choose a higher setting.
