Re:Enhancements?
How about enhancing the game engine with polygon graphics like http://www.doomsdayhq.com/
...? I read the iPhone port has audio improvements. Can we get those for the original computer/PC port? The problem is, any time you modify the original game content and decide to sell it stores, you have to get the game rerated by the BBFC and ESRB. It's often the cause as to why developers and publishers just provide updates on their website, rather than integrating the updates with the published discs.

Heretic has OpenGL in this project.
Doomsday. And other DOOM-related engines.

Re:i REALLY liked the original doommaybe if they placed modern graphics rendering on top of the old 2D control system, i would take a look Sounds like you're looking for jDoom -- unless I've misunderstood, that is.
-
Re:I never liked Quake ...
Who needs storyline when you have co-op?
Doom, Quake and later SeriousSam were all games with pretty much no important story but fun fun fun in multiplayer co-op.
I don't know if I'm alone in this thought, but for me it was much funner to play jDoom in coop than Doom3 single. Simple graphics, simple levels and a whole lot of fun. -
Re:Where's the bullet point for "fun"?
I'm surprised, I've talked to a lot of gamers who were so bored with Doom3 that they turned on God Mode and just went at it to see the end boss.
That was me. I got tired as hell of flipping between a flashlight to see in impossibly dark corners and a gun to kill whatever jumped out of the "monster closet" that passing over some point opened.
I love the first 2 in the Doom series and play Doomsday all the time with the high-res packs but Doom3 was a boring waste.

The big 5 (under GNU/Linux)
Since I've started using Linux exclusively, it has changed somewhat:
1. Multiple instances of Doom with the doomsday engine
2. Crack-attack
3. Mutant Storm
4. Nethack:)
5. Grid Wars 2 -
Re:Well duh
I remember running Doom on Linux back in 1996 at 320x240 on an unsupported trident card under XFree86 with an 8-bit color palette that got real ugly if I moved the mouse out of the window area, which was mostly full screen. It was aweful, but better than nothing. 486 DX2 66, at least 8MB of RAM, probably 16. I bet it would run better now..

Re:Me too, but I had a 968 chipset. VESA, SDD, etc
Yup. That is why I use this to help the graphics.

Re:LEGO Star Wars, WC3
I'll third it. I play Lego Star Wars with my 8yo son. It's cute and fun for both of us. And it feels so good to whack Jar-Jar with a light sabre...
Some of the older FPSs have good co-op modes. Heretic is one of my favorites; I worked through that a couple times with my son. The Doomsday engine breathes new life into a lot of those old games by updating the graphics, sound, and control schemes.

DOOM and MAME...
DOOM (even Doomsday) to enhance the original games), MAME, and other game emulatoors give me replays and nostalgias.

Re:Doom3 wasn't an arcade game
In the original Doom game, I enjoyed the complex level design and automap feature, combined with lots of secret areas and lots of monsters to battle at once. I just don't much enjoy battling one or two monsters at a time, and I'm bored by the linear architecture of modern fps games.
For single player gaming, I like the complex architecture, automapping, and multiple monster battles in modern 3rd-party remakes of the original Doom game (jdoom) .
While some modern fps games have realistic graphics of gritty inner-city environments, I don't care. If I wanted to spend my time in a realistic gritty inner-city environment, I'd go to a gritty inner-city environment in real life! Not interested. /end rant -
Re:Linux and classic PC Software
Classic games, huh?
Well, I happen to have just the links for you.
Doomsday: A windows and linux improved doom port
http://www.doomsdayhq.com/
ScummVM: An LucasArts games emulator. Plays almost all games: Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max...
http://www.scummvm.org/
DOSbox: An DOS emulator. Good for classic games.
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
With Wine, you can also play lots of classic windows games. Take a look at wine's application database to find your game.

Re:Well at least he has a good point.
There's a few ports out there now... I use Doomsday for Doom, Doom II, Heretic and Hexen. I'll have to check out ZDaemon.

Re:Wow this is great
Uhh... DOOM and Quake anyone?
The source for DOOM was released years after it was released, and there is a thriving community based on improving the game.

SDL + OpenGL + GUI
Write your own, in C++. It's easier than it sounds if you design the controls correctly. I wrote the UI for our games (see Betty's Beer Bar for an example) and it didn't take too much time. It's not OpenGL but the idea is the same, only the drawing part changes.
As for OpenGL, keep it generic - you can hook a SDL window and Direct3D (I submitted a mini howto but I think Sam never included it, check the mailing list archives), so a good idea may be to create or use an abstraction library that can use either OpenGL or Direct3D. Since Direct3D 8+ is almost a copy of OpenGL, writting one is also easier than it sounds. And if your license is compatible, there's a simple wrapper in the Doomsday Engine project.
Of course, you can always use a 3D engine which already includes a GUI (we are currently using OGRE) and which solves the OpenGL/D3D/Whatever abstraction.
Good luck! -
Re:My recent LAN party
Hey! No way can you call Doom ][ "old school"!
Grrr! ;p -
Another one is the Doomsday Engine.
http://www.doomsdayhq.com/
The Doomsday Engine is an enhanced version of the original Doom engine. You can use it to play any games that use this engine, like Doom 1/2, Heretic, and Hexen (you must have the original game files to do so).
This engine supports (among other things) OpenGL/Direct3D graphics, 3D sound with EAX or A3D, and even 16-person multiplayer. -
Re:Freeciv?
C'mon - lets get more nostalgic. How bout Doomsday?
-
Re:DooM
Try This you need the Doom wad files, well actually there is a engine for all the ID Games up to Hexen I think. Its pretty cool, open source, uses open GL, has thing like actual lighting effects, the rockets and plasma rifle light up the hallways as you blast an imp or 12. Have fun defineately worth a download if you have the wads!
-
Re:Might possibly upgrade...
I had a similar set up to yours.. 2500, 512, and a GeForce 2MX. My recomendation would be to get a Radeon 9600XT, it seems like the best bang for the buck. Although I could run most of the high-demand 3D apps back then, they are much nicer now. For example I have been playing jDoom (with high-res model and texture packs) and Tron2.0 a lot, both at pretty high res and have not had a lot of hiccups, the image quality is also very nice and it's reliable(compared to some of the older ATI's, my friend had some major problems with a 9200 series this year). Quake 3 engine games scream along too, although of course Doom 3 is a totally different animal. Tenebrae (a reworking of the original Quake source with doom-like lighting/shadow effects, i don't have the link sorry) runs reasonably well, although Doom 3 will probably run much smoother due to Carmack's insane ability to optimize. At $150-200 it's a steal and, if those benchmarks are to be believed, you should be able to run doom at if not the highest quality at least a very reasonable level or performance.
-
Re:Hmmm....
Albeit in a newer engine, I am one of those people. It is great fun. I am looking forward to DooMIII co-op (I really hope it has co-op!).
-
Re:Are the levels going to be the same?
I don't know if you are joking or not, but the levels won't be the same. However, if you are eager to re-experience the original, you should download the JDoom engine and 3d model packs from Doomsday. You can then experience the classic game in high-resolution, OpenGL goodness (provided you still have copies of the original WAD files from Doom and Doom 2, otherwise you can only play the shareware versions).
-
Re:Great fun :-DYou put
.pk3 files into Data/jDoom/Auto. Ideally, all the content you download will be .pk3 files, making it a lot easier. I think there is also a use for Data/jDoom/Textures and Data/jDoom/Patches, but I haven't quite figured it out yet.The placement of resource files such as PK3s and WADs should be covered in the engine readme file, which is conveniently not included in the Linux source tarball.
:-) Also, you'll have to manually create the Auto directory under Data/jDoom. I guess there would be a need for an install script that takes care of the basic setup. All the current resource packs have been developed on Windows systems, so you may also run into some troubles with case sensitivity. In general, Doomsday will handle the contents of PK3s in a case-insensitive manner but it's something to watch out for.
The Textures and Patches directories are explained in the engine readme. They can be used to replace the original low-resolution images with high-resolution ones.

Re:jDoom sucks
woops, that ftp is blocked from off campus, so the file linked to probably doesn't look like anything at all.
:-S
try here instead (my bad :-( )
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess... and the old sprites do have a nostalgic retro feel. :-D -
Re:486 dx2 66Use DooM Remake...it's sweet. Has IP and server configs all built in
Interesting. Thx. Although reading through posts on the net I have seen several people suggesting using the Win32 port JDoom instead.
Still for many of us actually using old 386/486 (and below
:) hardware is all part of the fun. In addition the joy of having old hardware lying around is you can take risks with it which you wouldn't want to do with your new PC, besides it's also fun to do things with older hardware that people wouldn't think was possible on such old equipment e.g. here is one of my favourites a webserver on a 8088. -
heretic and hexen do run in a newer engine

Mine?
Well, I use my PC as a game box with some browsing only (with SSH if I need to access one of the unixish machines) so here's my stuff:
10 : Spybot Search & Destroy (Excellent spyware killer)
9 : Spyware Blaster (Recommended by Spybot author to run concurrently)
8 : Some form of browser.
7 : PuTTY (SSH client w/ tunnelling)
6 : Thief (awesome game)
5 : Thief 2 (more Thief!)
4 : Darkloader (allows one to run custom fan missions in the Thief games)
3 : System Shock 2 (creepy sci-fi rp/fps)
2 : For those days I feel like a slug-fest? Doomsday and the ol' Doom games. (adds real 3D and all the video card eye candy to Doom/Heretic/etc. A MUST HAVE!)
1 : Half Life You know it! (still has one of the best stories of any game around)
-
jDoom
Doom I??? Doom II??? I haven't heard of anyone playing either of those games in at least 5 years. My god, they had a Doom release on the Atari Jaguar!!! Think about that!
Have a little respect. Doom is still an awesome game. Go download the Doomsday Engine and try to remember how great of a game that it is. I would venture to say that most FPSers wouldn't even be around if it wasn't for Doom. It's still a fun multiplayer game as coop (which most games lack now) or DM, especially with improved network code. -
Re:Until then, there's always...
Doom 'Legacy' is not really updated ...
The MacOS X version for example, has still no music support and is quite incomplete.
There is no update of it for 2 years
I suggest Doomsday instead. That's a nice port for Windows and superior to DoomLegacy. -

Re:Good old Doom riffs
I guess it has something to do with me playing Doom since I was 11 or something, but I still enjoy its music, I've downloaded its soundtrack, along with remixes, and listen to it frequently.
Needless to say, I go through the levels of Doom once every couple of months.
Doom, in my opinion, is one of the best video games, ever. -
The newer DooM ports
Remember that DooM is still being developed. The newer source ports adds a lot to the DooM experience, like higher resolutions, mouselook and even 3d models.
Check out ZDooM available for Windows and Linux. It's a very stable port that adds a lot of playability compared to running iD's original DooM under Win32.
Also JDooM, a fun port that adds a lot of eyecandy under OpenGL.
This post is pretty much a rerun of one of my earlier! -

Re:Perhaps I'm doing something wrong...
I'm curious about which legacy games are giving you trouble. I've found solutions for Doom , System Shock 2, LucasArts adventures and others.
-
Re:I remember that...For playing Doom (and Heretic/Hexen), I think the Doomsday Engine is the best solution.
Of course, I'm a bit biased.
-
Re:Cooperative games
I'd also recommend Heretic. My 5yo loves killing monsters with me. Doomsday is a great Windows port of Doom, Heretic, and their direct descendants.
-
Gamers?
I'd think multiplayer games are inherently social events. Some people (myself included) don't like multiplayer games. Give me anything from the Thief series or the redone Doom stuff @ DoomsdayHQ. That makes me an antisocial bastard, not the people that gather together to game. -
DOOM...
The guy on the right is an imp.
:) Yes, I had dreams like those. I still love the game. I play jDoom once in a while for kicks. I even made small mods for DOOM 2.
System Shock 2 is another one too. :) -
Re:Hmmm....
Better technology is not the same as a better game. As a game, rather than just eye-candy, I'll pit Duke against any of the more modern full 3D shooters. Duke had humor and attitude. I loved it back then, and I've been trying to find a way to play it under Win2k. (No sound -- Which sucks, because that's a big part of the attitude referenced above.)
I can't wait until someone gets a working Win32 version up and running. Maybe with 3D objects replacing the sprites a la the Doomsday ports of Doom, Heretic, and Hexen.
I hear you scoffing. "Sure, Duke3D was good, back in the day. But that's just nostalgia, you old fart!" Well, maybe. But I do play still play Heretic pretty regularly. I'll bet Duke's still got some life in him!
Let's rock!

Learn from Doom
There are already posts compaining about releasing the source for an outdated game. I'd say take a look at what happened to DooM since the source release...
A number of new ports for a variety of platforms. Ports that improve the engine, as well as those that add eye candy.
Nothing but good can come of this! -
Re:It only gets better!
Actually a port like that is already out. Check out JDoom, part of the Doomsday engine. The doomsday engine features 3D models, OpenGL, JUMPING, and freelook. (Plus others, chek out the site!!)
P.S. Doomsday also runs Heretic and Hexen if you have them! -
Re:Warcraft 3
Of course, the monsters are still ugly,
Not sure what you're using for OpenGL doom but check out this link. (I just installed jdoom/doomsday one week ago today actually.) There's a monster model pack you can download to get better looking monsters. There's also a 180MB texture pack you can download to improve the scenery. -
