Re:Idiot users
Most of them do unfortunately. E.g. SwiftKey does. Also SwiftKey used to be an indie dev house but that got bought by Microsoft. It'd be nice to think that Microsoft selflessly love Android users and want to support a good keyboard application for Android and iOS even though they are competitors to Windows Phone. However it's more likely that they bought it because it had a bunch of user data they could monetize in various dubious ways.

If you don't request this permission, you will not receive the broadcast at that time. Though holding this permission does not have any security implications, it can have a negative impact on the user experience by increasing the amount of time it takes the system to start and allowing applications to have themselves running without the user being aware of them. As such, you must explicitly declare your use of this facility to make that visible to the user.

Hi there, I just spotted Swype in the Google Play store and had exactly the same concerns.
Outside of reading the dictionary, I would not have expected Swype should not require any special permissions, and yet it wants a big long list of permissions:
Record audio
Get my approximate and precise location
Read my text messages
Full network access
Pair with Bluetooth devices
Read my contacts
Read terms I've added to the dictionary
Read call log
Read phone status and identity

Access protected storageSo does Google Keyboard
https://www.xda-developers.com...
Let's take a look at what's going on here. First off, Google Keyboard has access to your own contact card, and accounts on your device. This means it has the ability to know who you are, and all of the Email (and other) accounts you have available on your device. That means it's possible for them to see what Google/Dropbox/ Twitter/Microsoft Exchange/Facebook accounts you have available on your phone. I have absolutely no idea why this is needed, nor why people are willing to give this information over.
Next up, the app can read your contacts. That's fair enough-Google obviously want to add your contact names to the spell-checker and auto-complete databases. This makes sense, and is something justifiable for a keyboard. The ability to modify or delete the contents of USB storage is somewhat strange, but while it does allow access to all your data stored on your "SD card," there's unfortunately no real

Re:Whackamole!
25,000 downloads a day is utterly trivial in comparison to the hundreds of millions of downloads of file sharing software from CNET alone, let alone other sites:
The amusing part of the CNET downloads, is that CNET is owned by CBS, a major media company. So any attempt by CBS to sue file sharers can be countered by the fact that they encouraged it by distributing the software on a massive scale. The same story, on not as massive scale, is true for Fileplanet, owned by IGN, which is a division of News Corp, owners of Fox:

Ahhh, an old C&C fan like me, welcome brother. Hail Kane! Glad you liked GOG, they really treat you right and if it works good in Wine please post to their forums, as I'm sure your info will be valuable. Oh and just a little prezzy from a fellow NOD in case you didn't know, here is completely free non pirate C&C Tiberian Sun and the original C&C Red Alert for ya. They released both games for free to drum up interest in the newest one, so if you don't find those links fast enough just Google there are plenty of places to pick them up. Death to GDI!

Re:Proof how screwed up society is
Hot Coffee was easy to access in every version of the game. It was not a third party mod or a patch in any ordinary meaning of the word.
Other than the fact that you had to patch the game, using a hack that did not come from Rockstar, of course.
That can't be allowed to happen.
Yawn. I suppose you wanted a recall of the Quake games when people started releasing nude skins for the game? We'll call you a whaaambulance, stat.

Re:Or release a demo
You can find a bunch of pretty decent demos over at http://www.fileplanet.com/ if you go over there and look. Sure, if you don't subscribe to it, they can take a while to download, but many are worth it.
Here's the problem with demos, imo. They are very polished little snippets of the game, and they don't reflect the reality of how good the actual gold version of the game will be. They are great to see how the basic mechanics of the game are in most cases, but they won't tell you if the game is buggy as hell.
I have yet to play a demo that crashed, or had more than a minor annoyance associated to playing them. Heck, I played the HellGate:London demo, and it ran flawlessly. I got into the closed beta, and it was buggy as hell for the multi-player. When the gold version was released, even the single-player version had some problems that had to be patched to correct, and that patch took several days.
Besides, with many games today, the demos are only the opening part of the game, which makes sense. However, for games where you progress along various trees of abilities that you don't get into until you play the game for a bit, later gameplay is not seen.
I played some demo version of Dungeon Siege, and thought it rocked. Unfortunately, it was the whole game. By the time I finished the game, I realized how average the game actually was. Just about everyone else that I know that played DS found the same thing. Awesome in the beginning, monotonous in the end.
So, demos only get you a glimpse, and a very polished one at that. Gold versions are probably released with deliberate bugs to help break the "zero-day" pirate scene. Release a game with a crippling bug that occurs about 1/2-2hrs into gameplay, and only a patch can fix it, and viola: pretty darn good copy protection. At the very least, it slows down the pirates, who have to then break the patch. -

Re:Let me give orders in pause!
You may want to give Ground Control a shot. While I don't think you can give orders while paused (it's been awhile since I played it), it is pure combat - no base building or anything.
You may still be able to get GC1 for free here or find it for next to nothing in a [forgot-the-word]-bin.
Btw: GC2 shouldn't be nearly as good. -

Direct2Drive kind of sucks
I recently purchased EverQuest 2 through the Direct2Drive service. I figured an MMO was relatively safe since I wouldn't need to deal with any of the weird DRM that most Direcr2Drive games require to be installed. The big problem was delivery of the game files. At least for EverQuest 2, in order to download the files I paid for I had to use the FilePlanet servers and a proprietary download program. The real problem is that unless you are a FilePlanet subscriber you can't use the "no wait" servers AND ads are displayed by the download application for the duration of the download. Now you can minimize the application and use your computer, but every couple minutes when the ad changes the application will pop up into the middle of your screen. The only way to stop this from happening is to subscribe to FilePlanet to disable the ads (keep in mind this is to download a program I PAID for, not a demo). Additionally, you can't just leave the download going overnight because the download app has a habit of timing out the connection, in which case the download needs to be manually resumed. I spent an exciting 3 hours watching the bits come down and had to resume the download more than 20 times.
I can understand problems with downloads timing out as the Internet is far from perfect, however forcing a paying customer to watch ads while the product they bought is being downloaded just boggles my mind.
I thought the Steam install process was much better although I waited until a couple weeks after Half Life 2's launch before using it. Just wish I could figure out how to install Steam programs on some drive other than C:. -
Re:GTA rocks!
Thrill Bill is the name and download. Fileplanet is a bit annoying but I couldn't find a link anywhere else.
I actually don't think I kept a copy, but my friend was able to dig up the name.
The intermission is pretty short, but it's one of the most clever bits of a stunting video I've seen. -
Re:B&W2 Mac version?
Then MS bought Bungie, Halo for XBOX was announced, and Halo for anything else went away.
Yes, then Halo for PC came back, probably because of all the people who (like me) said "I'll buy this crap for PC but there's no way I'll play an FPS with a gamepad."

Unreal Engine 3
Take a look at the next Unreal engine. Many of these advanced features are already there. The demo video is quite incredible. There's also Project Offset which I'm eagerly awaiting as well.

Re:PQ, Gamespy et al.
How about getting your facts straight. Dakota hasn't worked at GameSpy for about 2 years now. And how did he "sell out"?
Okay I guess I missed that, but can you please point me in the direction of the employee listing at Gamespy? Not really public knowledge, is it?
Dakota traded Captured.com for a career with Gamespy. Captured wasn't paying any bills, and Gamespy did. How isn't that selling out? Obviously he had his reasons for leaving, but it still was a financial choice -- wasn't it?
Selling out isn't always a bad thing. Sometimes it just makes sense -- but it's still considering finances over art. Dakota didn't have time to run Captured, and I think GSN pulled the plug because CTF readership fell off. It went from being a kind of early blog to being a news site, to being a p1mp subsection of PQ, to being DOA. Is Dakota happy with that lifecycle? I doubt it.
But the bulk of my comment was simply a reply to the person who wanted to know how video game journalism has progressed, and it's really on point in my opinion. The whole games industry has gone very corporate/bottom line, and I think it sucks.
Looks like Dakota did leave GSN, and from his sig, here is where it looks like he went. If anything, this proves he sort of felt like getting away from GSN, and seeing that he's not doing games related stuff, maybe he had a change of heart? -
Re:Long term viability?
but the concept of subpixel rendering for LCDs is general enough to apply to any image with sharp edges
No. It only applies well to objects that are all-black or all-white. Say that R means red-on and r is red-off. Then, subpixel rendering takes advantage of the fact that solid white is rendered on LCD as RGBRGBRGB (for 3 horizontal pixels). A horizontal line from 0.66 to 1.33 could be drawn as rgBRGBRgb.
That technique works because white/black objects use the 3 color elements in equal proportion. The program is free to stop the chain of RGB at any point, knowing that the shape still looks white. Any non-greyscale image will have bias towards one of the components, meaning that subpixel rendering would create a left or right tendency in the percieved visual. (Reddish things are leaning a partial-pixel to the left, blueish things lean to the right).
If the shape were colored (unlike text, which the viewer knows is almost always solid black), then a transition from figure to ground is not readily distinguishable from a texture pixel in a different color.
but the concept of subpixel rendering for LCDs is general enough to apply to any image with sharp edges.
If Quake involved sharp edges somewhere...
And what is the silhouette of a polygon in a Quake model?
They don't have significant silhouettes, unless the player has replaced the skin and terrain texture maps with high-contrast fullbright colors, which was a common cheat in years past.
If the game in question were not Quake, but instead some monochrome line-rendered shooter like PencilWhipped, subpixel rendering could work, just as it does for text. -

Go download the stresstest and be as disappointed in DDO as I am.
I will do this, except for being disappointed just because you are.
Your statement instructs me to be disappointed, do you have a predisposition against DDO? Do you want me to have one also? You could have rephrased that to read, "Go download the stresstest I hope you're not as disappointed in DDO as I am."
You've illustrated my point, though, in how a great game like WoW can automatically hurt a possibly great game like DDO. For christ's sake, man, it's not even off the ground and you've killed it.
