Re:...but can it run Crysis?

Re:Extrapolate much?
Erm 100% of Blizzard's revenue is generated by PC Gamers, so therefore I extrapolate from my dataset that 0% of gaming must be happening on other platforms.
Picking Activision or Ubisoft are bad examples as they primarily produce console games with PC as an afterthought. Fortunately they are not the only game manufacturers, nor are they representative of the gaming industry in general.
Activision Blizzard is a single company and the market leader. So yeah, it's very representative.
You may wish to become better informed.
What I wrote are numbers released by the publishers themselves. Before you make a fool of yourself again: Better read what you post. The infographic says very clearly that the 2011 and 2012 numbers are predictions by a 3rd party source. The infographic onlycompares PC vs. consoles but ignores the entire mobile market (I just wrote that 5-7% revenue are PC games, not that the remaining ~95% are consoles). They are not actual data.
The infographic also explicitly includes browser games that are already Linux-compatible. Was there a rush of FarmVille players to Linux? No.
So if we include browser games in a discussion about AAA game publishers, fine: My argument was that Windows users have an irrational emotional attachment towards Windows and the installed base of PC Linux will not change via further availability of games, as the free Linux ports of id Software's and Epic's games -- and by your will also availability of browser games -- already proved. To repeat myself: Linux is great and it's the main platform I use. I'm not bashing Linux. All I did was countering the claim that Steam on Linux will suddenly lead to a mass migration of Windows users to Linux.
We had AAA games on Linux in the past. It did not change a thing and Steam will not boost PC Linux from 1% installed base to a 30, 50,or 70% installed base. It just won't.PC has a niche in MMORPGs and strategy games but the overall majority of revenue is generated on other platforms: Consoles and mobiles (iOS, Android, NDS,...).
Valve's ambitions on Linux have nothing to do with PCs. Valve wants Steam with its big picture mode to run on "livingroom hardware" (=smart TVs) with Linux as option to run on them. See http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/ncis3o/gt-tv-valve (after 3min) for an interview with Valve's boss who confirms that. The Valve games announced for Linux (TF2, L4D2, and Portal) are not high-end games like Battlefield2. Smart TVs capable of Full HD playback are powerful enough to run them. -
Re:Finally
I did, and I already knew the answer. That was me questioning the reliability of data coming from Ubisoft, and you citing them.
Really, READ THE INTERVIEW! Quote: "Research showed that it can reach that rate for some specific or popular PC games, and that number often varies depending on the territory. So we are not saying that it applies to all PC games for all territories, and we’re not saying that the same situation would apply for any game."
To keep it simple: 90% piracy = isolated incident, 5%-7% PC gaming revenue = global data (and this also applies to Activision.
And even if your stupid calculation was right: All those non-PC gamers didn't switch to Linux.
Your attempts to distract from the original claim (which was Valve on Linux = mass migration of PC gamers to Linux) just do not work. PC gaming on Windows is not what's keeping PC Linux at 1%. Both id Software and Epic Games in the past provided Linux binaries for their games. That didn't have a measurable impact on PC Linux' installed base and Valve won't do anything either.
Valve isn't targeting PC Linux anyway. They target "livingroom hardware" (probably smart TVs) with Linux as option to run on them. See http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/ncis3o/gt-tv-valve (after 3 minutes).
Valve's lower end games (TF2, Portal1, L4D) could easily run on platforms powerful enough for full HD video decoding and playback. -
Re:Fear...
This may work if the real plan of Valve is to release a Linux based console having Steam. From there supporting Linux is a no brainer.
No it's not. It's for powerful "livingroom hardware" (probably smart TVs) with Linux as option to run on them. See http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/ncis3o/gt-tv-valve (after 3 minutes). LG is already said to announce a shift from their NetCast smart TV platform to webOS (Linux) next CES: http://www.webosnation.com/gram-working-lg-open-webos-tv
Valve's lower end games (TF2, Portal1, L4D) could easily run on platforms powerful enough for full HD video decoding and playback.

Re:I Hate Zynga, But...
They're not in trouble for copying the idea. They are mainly in trouble for copying the expression of that idea. I.e. the games look identical. The artwork is similar, the character graphics are similar, everything about the game is designed to be as close as possible to the original. At least their tiny tower game looked very different graphically to the original, however this one almost looks identical to the original. This is indeed copyrightable according to the Tetris ruling.
-
Re:Rules
Erm they didn't just copy the rules. They blatantly ripped off the interface design and artwork too. Go have a look at their various titles. It's not simply a case of copying the concept or the engine. It's basically trying to make a very close clone artwork and all. The Tetris ruling should make it quite clear that they are in violation, and also that the rules aren't the copyrightable bit.
I hate EA and the copyright laws as much as the next person. But I hate Zynga more and I really hope they get their asses kicked for this.

Re:Is it "too real"?
Well here are a couple more using video games but if you type "30 VS 60 FPS video comparison" there are dozens of different videos to choose from. Bottom lne is while 30FPS works it isn't nearly as smooth, especially during large action scenes than 60FPS. i can see why Cameron and Roger Ebert both say 60FPS is the future of moviemaking.

What about real men in video games?
I remember feeling so demeaned and inadequate when I first saw that butch space marine shooting demons below the Doom logo -- and things have only gotten worse since then. When will gaming companies stop creating computer models of unrealistically muscular and coordinated men? We need more of this.

Re:id color palette
From the in-game videos released so far, the game looks fantastic. But it still has the same color scheme that id (and many other companies) have decided must haunt FPSs since the early 90's: grey, brown, beige, and some chrome. I get that it's part of the environment, but at least some departure would have been nice. -- Entomologically speaking, the spider is not a bug, it's a feature.
Two things: firstly, if you damage your graphics card in just the right way, or unpack the game's archives and mess with the texture files, you can have psychedelic rainbow colours. Would that suit you better?
Secondly, entomology is the study of insects, spiders are not insects. Possible corrections to the sig: "Arthropodologically/Arachnidologically Speaking..." or "Entomologically speaking, the spider is not a subject worthy of study."
Please excuse my pedantry -

Re:Im all for fixing classification but....
Typically I would agree with a statement like this, but MK is different. The original arcade versions contained silly red spray and spatter. Dismemberment looked cartoonish. Technology changed that, and today's versions of MK can be quite gruesome.
Your comment intrigued me and I decided to see for myself how Mortal Kombat has progressed since I last paid it any mind many years ago. So I watched a few gameplay trailers and I do not agree that MK has gotten any less silly or more gruesome, relatively speaking.
Yeah, there are more pixels on the screen now, but, importantly, the characters don't really seem to suffer. They don't realistically shriek or cower. They more or less shrug off being stabbed through the chest with a giant icicle, or having their bones beaten into dust. It may not be cel-shaded, but it's cartoon violence in capitals. Like Wile E. Coyote being flattened under a boulder. In reality, any one of the fighting moves in MK would absolutely lay an opponent out. Most would never fight again, IF they didn't die from their injuries.
I think what bothers people about these sorts of things is what they themselves imagine that other people get out of them. I don't really care for fighting games, but if I did, I might play Mortal Kombat for the reason that, like the late George Carlin, I like excess in my entertainment. I don't want to hurt people. I won't even squish a bug. But ripping someone's entire skeleton out through their butthole? What a delightfully absurd idea. But the busybodies worry about sickos using MK for porn. Or children being - wait, Mortal Kombat is in no way a children's game, so what the fuck?
Today's MK is no worse than yesterday's Doom. Some people will wring their hands, and 10 years from now we'll all shake our heads in wonder at how naive and prudish we were.

GameTrailers Review
GameTrailers isn't a fan of the game either
-
Buddy of mine picked it up
It feels like they just plain gave up and didn't want to take the time to polish it. The now-infamous Gametrailers review is pretty much spot on.
If this and pretty much every Final Fantasy game since VII have proven anything, it's that this series needs to just go away. It's far too late for a graceful death, but put it out of its misery.
YMMV, just my opinion, etc apply.

Why do this?
Why do this? Why do this and enter the complicated territory of having a different face and voice for any of the characters? Yet more actors who may ask for more power over their "IP" when lending their faces and voices for the movie. Deal with the ones you already have and the voices people know and love. How about the risk of disappointment from a badly adapted script, bad acting or shitty execution? Crappy special effects with blue/green screen on the level of the new V series (that's really bad) trying to merge live action with CGI spaceships? Stupid latex rubber alien faces no better than Babylon 5 or Ster Trek? I'm not knocking either of the last 2 in and of themselves. I'm just pointing out that there's only so many variations of "humanoid head with extra bits and a bad hair day = alien" and "tortoiseshell box with a pin hole and tubes = really alien."
They have the foundation of a 3D CG feature film already in the two games. Why not bring in Blur - who did that fantastic Dragon Age: Origins trailer and I believe the WAR Online trailer too - to inject an upgrade of graphic goodness. Then pretty much just link the cutscenes from the game together with the paragon/renegade choices considered canon by the developers.
You might even increase the sales of a movie-linked GOTY edition of Mass Effect when people who don't usually play games realise they can actually play the movie with their own choices and their own version of Shepherd!

Re:Worst ever use of computer lingo in film
I bring you NBC's Life's take on Prince of Persia: http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/prince-of-persia-on-nbcs-life/129534 (Sorry for the ad-filled site; I can't find it on YouTube anymore.)
The lingo is awful, but the entire premise makes no sense whatsoever-- how do you hide a spreadsheet in a Xbox which can only be viewed if you make it to "level 10" on Prince of Persia? Moreover, does Prince of Persia even have a "level 10?" (No, it does not; the levels are names of different areas of the palace.)
Truly hilariously awful. Watch the actress whose fingers twitch while watching someone else playing the game.
I hope Ubisoft didn't pay anything for this product placement.

"A new game from the creators of Ico and Shadow Of the Colossus?"
*what*? Shadow of the Colossus?? They made that? now I'm interested! That game was revolutionary. Incredibly simple but easily the best looking game on the PS2 *and* .... just amazing. No crazy power ups or levels or XP or life meters or power meters or anything, just you and your horse and some 5 story monsters you have to climb up their legs and stab them in the head.
*googles Last Guardian* ..... here's the video. Looks like a perfect sequel to Shadow of the Colossus, can't wait to see that come out. -

Games do need innovation but the right kind
The problem is that there are too many similar games and sequels of successful series. So everything feels similar which generally isn't that fun after awhile. We're lacking variety which doesn't necessarily need total innovation. Companies do have to innovate and if,on their first try, it's not quite right that is not an excuse to go back to to the same old thing.
But innovation isn't just about completely changing everything. We don't need completely new control schemes to innovate. Just don't make every damn game feel the same.
Case in point, the BioShock 2 gameplay footage: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/47807.html?type=mov
Yes the graphics are nice but that was exceptionally boring to watch. If you give it early 90's graphics it's effectively Wolfenstein 3D. Where is the innovation in fun that really makes it exciting to those that have played most FPS games? There is none and quite frankly it looks like something to pass on. I don't care how many scripted sequences it has, we've had those, done properly, since at least Half life 1 and it's not really that exciting anymore no matter how good the graphics are.
I think we just need more variety. Look at Street Fighter 4. It's not really that innovative. It's SF but in 3D. But a lot of people think it's great. I personally think that's because you don't really get fighters these days. They've sort of died out. So to get one that's of decent quality is a great thing. So companies just need to quit copying each other and repeating so much crap. -
Re:Times have changed, but not prices
No, but everything he says about that game is true. I remember almost crying because I'd waited for so long for that game and it was so hard it made absolutely no sense. At the time I thought it was broken, I couldn't comprehend that some asshole would program a game like that deliberately.
-
Re:Not according to Kaz Hirai
Your statement is false.
The XBox360 is not faster than a PS3 - it is significantly slower. The only area it competes is the amount of RAM, and GPU performance.
Your statement is rather like saying "crappy_sound_mixer_A is faster than expensive_fancy_mixer_A because they both play audio and it is cheaper". If your only criteria is that it plays audio(or in the case of the XBox360, the graphics look good), then clearly the cheaper one is better - but your statement of it being faster is still false.
PS3 vs XBox360 specs have been debated endlessly in the past. I don't care to argue. It's quite subjective figuring out which hardware is most important, to determine whether the price is justified.
What I can tell you is, the XBox360 isn't fast enough for this game:

Looks like they've done an okay job on the smooth transitions part.
If only they had scheduled release for a date other than April 1st!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF4zYu1nOMw
It also appears they're doing some very fancy processing to allow limited alternate viewing angles on scenes with actors. I imagine if they allow the angles to differ from the source by too much, it'd look distorted.
The youtube vid seems to go over a bunch of the "mini-games" you do while investigating. While the FMV certainly does WOW me, watching that brought me back to reality, that this is a game/point-n-click adventure.
