I once had half a dozen distro's on one computer, on a 80 GB HDD (lots of space left over for swaps), and then the drive bit the dust. The motor has shorted windings on the stator.

Since then, I've gone for livecd's. Now, we have this thing, and I suppose with the mention of GRUB, we are supposed to install all these OS's so we can run them in windows in the OS we choose to boot up into.

I'm sorry, I'm not giving up my live cd setup for this thing. Just the thought of having to install all those OS's again takes me back to the days of the hard drive, and I'm not anxious to go there. Security and reliability problems, anyone?

Well then again, I am running AdBlock, and Tabbrowser Preferences. In Tabbrowser Preferences I have it set to make all popups into tabs. However this time Firefox popped up that bar saying it blocked a popup. With AdBlock, I am running the latest filters from this site. I'm also messing around with the experimental AdBlockLearner which also seems to have some success. I'm using FlashBlock to take care of any pesky Flash-based ads. Hope that helps! -Ares

Well I don't know what your experience is, and I have no intention of arguing with it, but I have seen WA literature to the effect of, if you get "too much" pleasure out of your job, you are addicted and have to "control" it. I have seen happy, very productive people, who happened to also be Al-Anon addicts, get sucked into the "workaholism" BS and start to question almost everything about themselves, to the point of quitting (her) job, depression and a lack of desire to even get out of bed.

Those 12-step programs have done a lot of people a lot of good, but they can be insidious. (Link is a bit of a rant, but a good deal of what's said is indeed true.

I'm sure there are lots of things that were politicised around the time Bush came to office. He seems to have focused on Gay Marriage, Stem cell research and killing Arabs. I expect he still eats pork and shell fish so he hasn't quite dropped back right wing Christian roots.

No, it is not professional, by any means, but I work for myself, not anyone else, so I tend to want to accomplish something, and try and use a script or a series of them to get things done. If it works, I use it.

The coding is not so much the issue, as the overall design of the project.

I'm sure a professionally trained coder could redo a lot of my stuff, and have marvelous results.

I maintain this Knoppix remaster, and one of the things I have in there is a way to switch mouse cursor themes, there are 4 of them in all, with one having three variants.

I got a lot of negative feedback from beta testers in the beginning about the default Knoppix 3.4 mouse cursor, being too small, especially for laptops. I fixed that, and now can focus on other problems. (There are always other problems...)

The usage of the word "pirate" for copyright infringer is centuries old.

As early as 1755, it was used to describe people who copied books unlawfully.

I hear that there are people out there calling people who break into computers "hackers" instead of "crackers", though. Might want to go fight that battle.

I've read about Russian research, and other research, on the non-thermal biological effects of EM radiation. Apparently, the non-thermal effects depend sensitively on the pulse-shape, i.e. frequency spectrum, of the incident radiation. Appropriately pulsed EM radiation is able to effect biological processes, particularly neural, by coupling to "resonant" frequencies. Effects often depend on the frequency of the carrier which is beig modulated, and also on the carrier's amplitude, so it is all extremely complicated.

In the early 1980's, Dr. Eldon Byrd, working for the US Marine Corps, investigated these these weird, non-thermal effects, presumably for possible military purposes:

From 1980 to 1983, a man named Eldon Byrd ran the Marine Crops Non-lethal Electromagnetic Weapons project ... "We were looking at electrical activiy in the brain and how to influence it," he says. Byrd, a specialist in medical engineering and bioeffects, funded small research projects ... He conducted experiments on animals - and even himself - to see if brain waves would move in sync with waves impinging on them from the outside. (He found that they woud, but the effect was short lived.)

By using very low frequency electromagnetic radiation - the waves way below radio frequencies on the electromagnetic spectrum - he found he could induce the brain to release behavior-regulating chemicals. "We could put animals into a stupor," he says, by hitting them with these frequencies. "We got chick brains in-vitro to dump 80 percent of the natural opiods in their brains," Byrd says. He even ran a small project that used magnetic fields to cause certain brain cells in rats to release histamine. In humans, this would cause instant flu-like symptoms and produce nausea. "These fields were extremely weak. They were undetectable," says Byrd. "The effects were non-lethatl and reversible. You could disable a person temporarily," Byrd hypothesizes. "It (would have been) like a stun gun." ...

Byrd says he was told his workd be unclassified, "unless it works." Because it worked, he suspects that the program "went black."

Another weird effect that occurs at microwave radiation exposure levels much, much lower than the US safety standard of 10mW/cm^2 , is the ability of a high-intensity microwave beam, when turned on and off in a pattern corresponding to a sound, to cause a person to actually hear that sound when his head is illuminated with the beam. Although the beam is high-intensity, the average power level can be much lower than US safety standards because the beam is only "on" for a small fraction of a cycle. This has been around in conventional AI for a while. There exists an optimization technique, which goes by the name of Ant Colony Systems (ACS) http://www.geocities.com/fastiland/Teaching/acs/sw arm.html. This technique uses the observed intuition that ants are often able to find the most optimal path between a food source and the nest without any global all knowing power telling them what it is. The way they do it is by leaving a trail of chemicals (Pheromones) whose odor persists for a while. A lot of ants play it safe and use the trail with the highest pheromone scent, however there are a few rebels who strike out a new path and few which prefer to take paths with lower pheromone concentrations. Thus with the expense of very few ants (agents) the colony as a whole is able to map out the most interesting parts of the state space with a loss of very few individuals and often able to get the most optimal paths. Needless to say this approach works best in bounded state spaces.

Well, that puts it on the hard drive. If it is Windows XP, and you don't want to partition, or add another 7500 rpm soon to be toast hard drive, then you are back to the live cd. You can put the .iso on a hard drive, and use bootfrom=/dev/hda2/mylivecd.iso, then once booted, remove the livecd used to get you booted into the .iso on /dev/hda2 from the cdrom drive. I run several different live cd's on one box, with XP installed.
Favorite is SuSE 9.2, but I do run. my own remaster of Knoppix, as I am doing now.
You cannot, however, place the .iso on a Windows XP partition, you need a fat 16 or 32, or a linux ext2 or 3 partition to do that. If you don't want to mess with your Windows XP hard drive, you can add a second drive. PClinuxOS and SuSE 9.2 are the best of the livecd bunch, however. They are so good, they are worth the effort to install to the hard drive. I run a GB of ram, so I run my livecd's with the toram option (knoppix), and they are as fast as can be, with no hard drive involvement, only the fans can be heard while the PC is running my knoppix remaster. In contrast, XP is quite noisy, running off the hard drive. There are other problems with dd that need to be looked into, such as copying a 700 mb cd to a 20 GB partition. I don't recommend it.

Keep your windows XP box for all those wonderful applications. Just don't let XP on the internet. I use Kerio firewall, and can "stop all traffic". Now, what do I go on the Internet with? My live cd, a remaster of Knoppix Linux 3.4. Since I use a box with a GB of ram, I just "toram" when booting up, and like all Knoppix, can "myconfig=scan" for all my personal settings, such as Kmail, mouse cursor, etc.
I have four different cursors to choose from as you can see from the documentation. If the Project Looking Glass livecd works for enough of us, then I am sure we will be hearing a lot about it soon.
Be an interesting project to remaster that, to add what might be missing, etc.

If you have to have a bunch of reinstalls, just use Linux to begin with. Me, I "install" linux every time I boot up on my Windows XP box. It's my live-cd Knoppix remaster, using it now.

In general, any programmer optimization below the level of selecting an appropriate algorithm is a waste of time. In most cases, anything you can think to do with a variable or expression will be caught by the simplest optimizers out there. In some cases, things that you think will make things faster will actaully slow things down. In all cases, optimizations in the source will make the code harder to read and maintain, which will cost orders of magnitude more (in wasted programmer time) than the savings (in machine cycles) will deliver.

(I'm tempted to make some racist crack about the submitter, but I've met lots of programmers, from every corner of the planet, with similarly dimwitted notions about what happens to their source code when it is submitted to the compiler. Obviously, the general quality of computer science education (or computer science students) is depressingly low the world over.)

Your right about none zero memory pointers (I was just re-reading a FAQ compiled from the K&R bible).

BUT as part of an C compiler, using a "0" in a pointer context will always compile to a null pointer on the target system.

The only problems with zeros comes from the cast applied when passing parameters, and in such cases, even a NULL definition may require explicit casting.

Every now and then, Adblock lets an ad through, but you can just right-click it and select "block ad", which augments your filter rule set. Now a real killer feature for Adblock would be for it to somehow filter ad indirection pages, i.e. you go to a page but are indirected through a page with a giant ad. Currently that page will look mostly empty because Adblock blocks the giant banner, but maybe Adblock could be improved to auto-skip to the next page... which should be easy to find because it is the redirect URL.

I noticed a distinct increase in stability on OSX since I started using Adblock. I tend to surf with a single window loaded with up to 40 tabs, and it works like a charm. The frequent crashes of older versions are now history for me, although I still keep the habit of periodically saving a tab group bookmark just in case.

If you're new to Adblock, remember that for it to actually do something you'll have to configure some filters . I tend to use these regularly updated filters).

Actually, I'm surpised with the huge number of other cruel, monopolistic things ebay does such that those things are ignored, but ebay gets sued over such a trivial manner as bidding increments.

This is like the time BEFORE they were going to increase fees this year, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, they CALL UP to SWEET-TALK EBAY MEMBERS (probably one of the first time in history many members get a call) to start up a store, increase their listings, etc. KNOWING THE MEMBERS' FEES WILL SHOOT THROUGH THE ROOF GIVING EBAY MORE $'s.

Or when they coax brand name designer companies to join their special VERO club and promise to be an enforcer for the designer companies to shut down sellers selling counterfeits. Well, people STILL sell counterfeits and ebay still gets their $'s. ebay deserves the Tiffany lawsuit.
