Re: PS3 Hard drive installs.
Care to offer any examples? I've played quite a few games and have yet to have one install anything on the HD. Now if you go online and get the updates it puts it on the HD, but not right out of the box. Caching is not the same as installing.
When Penny arcade discussed Spider-man 3 "Tyco" states He [Gabe] brought it home, went through the long install again on his own PS3, and then wept under its cruel lash.
This was the first I had heard of any installs to the hard drive (beyond DLC or patches), so I went to Gamestop and checked the boxes, and Resistance for example "Requires 3 gigs of Hard Disk space" to play. I saw a number of boxes with similar requirements. Is that all caching that gets overwritten when you pop in a new game? Is Spidey 3 the exception?
Please let me know as I don't wish to be spreading FUD if I misunderstood.

Vagina.
(Posting anonymously because not everyone will get it, and I don't feel like being marked Troll today.)
Just to clarify. (and maybe there's a bit of Karma Whoring too)
But that was actually only one year ago. Two years ago Nintendo had barely shown the casing, and the big mystery about the controller was left for a few months. -
Re:Say it ain't so!!Most popular phones are old fashioned, the service is lacking, spotty and uses several standards and only in the US could they come out with a brand new smart phone and NOT feature 3G on it -and sell a shitton of them anyway! 2Gs is not very many Gs.

Weed Farker 2000 by the makers of the Fruit Farker
Some how, all I can think about this story is this Penny Arcade comic from a few years ago.
The real Fruit Farker Prime will probably be made in Mexico, sneak in illegally, scare small animals, and have a tendency to trap itself under the lawn furnature. -
Re:Now, if only...
I wonder what other piece of childhood nostalgia they'll ruin before the year's over?
I think the guys at Penny Arcade have an idea or two... -
Re:They'll probably choose Ubuntu because..
Except the AIDS version.
People are pretty much solid on that one. -
Pricing
I haven't been following the development of Hellgate all that closely, aside from playing the Mythos alpha a bit, but I can't help but think that the "elite" pricing is a terrible idea. $10/month for updates and a few small bonuses is crazy. The pricing model that Guild Wars uses would have made a lot more sense, and given them an excuse to announce a new expansion every few months, rather than a vague promise to add new content. Not to mention that people who join up a year after release will presumably get all the same content as those who have been paying for a year ($120). When you give people who have paid for the game second-class status, it's bound to cause resentment.

Re:What do they all have in common?
Yea but that same customer owns a DS, PSP, PS3 and probably others. Why are people on
/. proposing that this is his fault? This is ridiculous. If this were the case the article would have to be talking about how he goes through so many of these various gaming devices no matter what he buys. Why are so many of you wanting to blame him. It is fairly common knowledge that these XBox 360s are sucking at life at a truly epic level. At least this guy is saying what I said and not trying to relocate blame. Finally, I leave you with a paragraph from a recent Penny Arcade post:
It looks like Microsoft is trying to get out ahead of heat complaints on their system, which I think we may take as an admission of guilt. Hardware troubles on the Xbox 360 have ceased to be something one reads about deep in forum threads, buried on page four, beyond the depth that wisdom can penetrate. Certainly, such tales would break the surface and then recede. Anecdotal offerings of a user's "fifth" or "seventh" consecutive failed Xbox always struck me as worse, the implication being that they have no solution, and are waving a censer over it or something and sending it back out. I wondered to what extent these reports were being gamed, their message of widespread failure amplified, but I don't think we need to look for a knife in the dark. I think it really is that bad. -

Much like the recent Penny Arcade comic on how Doritos wants people to make games about their product.

Can I be a GM? I'm really good at it, and this won't happen very often. http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/01/10, maybe once, twice a week tops.

Re:Eating ...
This reminds me of a Q&A session from 2004 with the guys from PA. They were talking about their old apartment and kept referring to it as a bachelor pad. Part of the description involved the part about playing Tribes for a week straight. TB's answer to my question "What about using the bathroom?" was, "It was a super-absorbent pad."

We should really all stop ragging on Ted Stevens
Why is it people can't stop making fun of Ted Stevens? Sure, he made a poorly worded analogy. Big deal - the internet had been compared to plumbing before, would you like to rag on these guys too?
What I find most disgusting though is even though this one event seems ingrained in geek memory, these same geeks conveniently forget when Ted Stevens came out on our side. Personally, I think Americans would be better off if you had more politicians like him in office. -

I'm not playing right now
In all seriousness games aren't an addicting substance. I've played games for a long time now, on and off. I've never found it difficult to stop playing, never needed any sort of help. I often find it hard to keep playing a game after playing it for more than a week or so. Maybe some people are getting addicted to game, and those are probably the same people who can get addicted to just about anything thanks to some deeper psychological problems. Last time I checked games don't put chemicals in your system that make you need to play them, they're simply an enjoyable past time that people want to partake in.
Next thing you know someone'll look at a bookworm and claim books are addicting because they were unhappy at being able to read their favorite book, or a moviegoer unhappy at being barred from seeing a movie, or, you get the idea... -
Suprised no one has linked this yet...

Re:The original FF devs have already moved to 360
To be fair, people look back on the storyline to FF games with rose tinted glasses IMHO. Half of the time they make no sense or are a rehash of "giant evil guy wants to blow up the world for no good reason".

Re:security and stability is a fallacy
Along those lines, instead of paying $30k on a new car, I can just look in the newspaper and buy 20 crummy used cars for $1,500 a piece.
twenty cars? that is ridiculous! you shouldn't need more than 3. 4 if you are married. think of the environments!
i was mistaken. it was gabe with the discman wrapped in money. also, he keeps it wrapped in only $380 in cash. i guess my extra $20 is superfluous.
Your idea is dumb for most people. If my computer craps out, a new computer straight out of the box is not a good replacement because it won't have all the software/files that I need. But even if I sort that out, then I'm still stuck with my other broken computer that needs to be fixed/replaced, which is going to cost me more time and/or money and hassle.
my idea isn't dumb. it's ludicrous. so is refuting an argument that uses a comic strip to support it's position.

Re:Monthly rate
That all seems over-complicated. Why not just give away the music and live on the proceeds of t-shirts and compilation sales? Sites like Penny Arcade, PvP or Red vs Blue suggest that sort of model can work for some forms of art. The question is, can it for musicians (who do also have the concert as another revenue stream) and how many can it support.
-
Maybe...
This will explain things better.

Re:linux?you fags still fucking around with linux? i guess you must like sucking them dicks and being pounded up the ass. I believe you have Linux confused with Mac OS X. The majority of Mac OS X users are homosexual. The majority of Linux users, however, are virgins. The only way they can get laid to is pay for it. Some may be gay, but mostly they just have a fear of girls.
To further illustrate this point, consider these two photos:

Re:hoo boy
Yeah, this stinks of a Conspiracy. Stinks on ice. Did you know that Karl Rove and Harriet Myers are both on the Eve board of directors? Did you know that over 75% of the employees are recent grads of Regent University's new Christian Gaming department? The only way to get to the bottom of this is if Bush will answer the following questions: What did he know? And when did he know it?
You remind me of penny-arcade comics. -
Re:Not the same market!
I don't think every game has to be multiplayer, but there are some that could really benefit from it. The TES series is a great example: it would have made the game a hell of a lot more fun if I could play with even just one friend in the same world. A big part of the game is getting all sorts of ridiculous gear and artifacts and just making your character look like a badass. Tycho put it really well:
But elaborate character creation in the absence of multiplayer is, for him, a sort of masturbation. If you create a character, and no-one is there to see it, what's the point?
Having a buddy to kill stuff with and say, "Wow, check out what I found!!" or, "Come see this ridiculous cave in the middle of nowhere!" would just make it more fun, I think. Definitely would have kept me playing Oblivion longer.
On a side note, there was word of a muliplayer Morrowind hack in alpha. I don't think it ever got past that and from the little bit I read it was pretty buggy. I just tried to look it up and found this interview with some guy named _FERRET who is apparently working on a multiplayer Oblivion hack. Cool.

Re:collision indeed
I'd certainly agree that movies to games (or vise-versa)are all bad.
Goldeneye was arguably better than the movie it was based on... The Riddick game was also supposedly surprisingly good. There are others if I take the time to remember them. Important thing is, they're not all crap.
I can't think of anything spectacular going in the other direction, however... Resident Evil made a lot of money, I guess. If you like anime, there's some good translations from cart to screen on the other side of the pond, but that's about it. -
