Re:People still use X-Box?Gunvalkyrie, you say? ; )
Hey, to each his or her own. However, I strongly disagree with you on the game selection. PS2 definitely started weak (as they all do), but the catalog has been strong for quite some time. The only games that interest me for X-Box are coming from Sega. Damnit, why won't the make Panzer Dragoon for GCN or PS2?
By the way, yes, the PS2 sucks for DVD playback I think the X-Box sucks for DVD playback too, but noticeably less. Which, actually, makes me think that making the GCN non-DVD wasn't such a bad idea after all.

The truth is out there
This 'article' is nothing more than a plot by the illuminati to make up for their failed 'divx' project. Echelon is nothing more than another assault on our freedom!
They're going to brainwash us all and turn us into goose-stepping communist robots!

Re:Metal Gear Solid 2
Doom 3 was definately[sic] all that anyone could talk about, so it was the leader in hype.
Not that it's terribly important to the topic at hand, but I beg to differ. Perhaps Doom III was the leader in hype, but it was far from being "all that anyone could talk about." Check out the popular gaming and game-related sites like Penny Arcade. What I heard most out of them was how delicious the new Zelda game looked. Doom might have won the hype war, but Zelda definitely got plenty of attention.

summary cribbed from Penny Arcade
(from Penny Arcade)
We've already said what we were going to say regarding Doom III, but seeing it garner the accolades it has just makes me want to say it again louder. There's no game there. There's nothing to comment on from a play perspective, save a few minutes of visual and auditory presentation - like a Future Crew demo writ large. I'm not saying it's going to suck or rule. Maybe id will be the ones to make a real game with their technology again. What I'm saying is that there's nothing to actually know about it. Promising? Okay, you can have "promising." Here you go. Best of show? Not on my watch. What the hell show did you go to?

Re:Books vs. serials
As a form of serialization, web comics do okay if they are done well. Witness Megatokyo, Penny Arcade, PvP, and I guess to some extend Mac Hall, although I've only been reading the last for a few months.
The business model for these comics is interesting. The comic itself has no value; with so much competition in free entertainment there is no way they could make people pay for it. But they can sell merchandise and they can solicit fan endorsement. Kurtz sells comic books that are along the lines of the webcomic but not quite. Mac Hall and Megatokyo sell merchandise ala Cafe Press. Penny Arcade...well...I'm not exactly sure what they do, but it has something to do with wallpapers and Paypal.
And let's not forget ads.
What I would like to see, as a consumer, is a lot of these comics brought together under one web publication. In Japan, manga is distributed in a big monthly magazine containing works by many authors. The magazine sells, the ads sell, and the publication passes some of that along to the artists (I would hope). If something like this appeared online, say like Keenspot but more organized, more selective, and with much much much higher bandwidth, I would definitely pay for it, ads and all, simply for the convenience of a daily/weekly/monthly strip on a high availability server. -

Re:MOHAA trolls
I was reading the news section of Penny Arcade this morning, and they were talking about America's Army. Slashdot's mentioned it a few times recently; FPS released for free by the American military. They're doing something interesting to handle team-killers. If a player breaks "rules of engagement" enough times, then your character "goes to jail" and you can't play on the server for a period of time. Check it out here, it's towards the bottom of the page. Sounds like a cool solution to me. -

Re:Ann Arbor Party
So let's all go to a party...celebrating a software release...at which you might meet the founder of a popular website. And maybe then he will invite you over to his house for pizza and ice cream and you'll be best friends forever.
[Props to Gabe from Penny Arcade for the quote]
Somehow, going out to party with a bunch of sweaty male IT workers and Software Developers just doesn't sound like my idea of a good time.
Unless there's free beer. Then I'm all over it. :-) -

Doom III and video cardsI suspect that when Doom III is released, a lot of people are going to upgrade to the GeForce 5 just to be able to play the game. This has happened in the past. "New ID game? Time to upgrade..." is a line even I've repeated like a parrot myself over the past few years. However, as this cartoon points out, ID software is best at making engines, not games. Will upgrading be worth it for most people, or are they better off waiting a year or two until interesting games are released that utilize the Doom 3 engine?
Consider this: Of the three games I've played almost exclusively in recent years, all three were Half-Life mods: Counter-Strike, Day Of Defeat, and Team Fortress Classic. However, with my current GeForce 3 based video card, I get the maximum 100fps at the highest supported resolution of 1280x960. So what exactly is the point of upgrading? Even if I upgraded to be able to play Doom III, I'd play it for at most a month, then go back DoD/CS/TFC.
PS: While we're on the topic of Half-Life, does anyone know why the engine doesn't allow resolutions above 1280x960? It seems like an arbitrary limit that could be easily removed. Maybe some of the people that invest months of time into writing HL cheats should try to figure out how to remove that limit instead...

Apparently..
If you thought the original X-Box controller was huge, you're in for a rude awakening.
Apparently I wasn't the only one who thought so either.. :o) -
GameCube PSO Keyboard / Controller
Although this thing looks freakin HUGE, it actually seems like a pretty good idea, and shouldn't be too bad - I've actually found the GameCube controller to be my favorite and most comfy to hold (just knocking the Dreamcast controller out of my top spot).
However, I picture lots of broken things if this controller gets thrown out of frustration..
Yet Another Obligatory PA Comic -
Wave Bird
There have been some pretty funny shenangans revolving around the Wave Bird over at Penny Arcade (especially today).

.mil game info
The military's new FPS is called America's Army, and was showcased just recently at e3. What's really interesting is that apparently it's free! Here's the blurb where I got my info from:
4. Americas Army
Seriously, who better to make a military squad based shooter than the fucking military? This game not only looked good but it had the features to back it up. Finally a game gives you the opportunity to use silent hand commands to communicate with your team. Realistic objectives, weapons, movement, and locations, everything in this game is as real as you can get. Each weapon operates just as it would in real life. Stand to close to a flash back and say good buy to your hearing for while. Shoot to many of your teammates and end up in jail. Try and use a sniper rifle without going prone and watch as your view bobs up and down with your breathing. You also get twenty some odd maps with expansive real world environments and kick ass objectives. Oh and then there's the fact that it's FREE!

Re:Still bloated
Well, once you pay for your software, you are entitled to recieve a upgrade. See, in this system we have called capitalism, you exchange money for goods or services. See an example here. It's people who keep stealing Windows that caused MS to have to revert to a product activation like this in the first place, you know.

My only question is...
... do we get a Fruit Fucker with this Matrix game?
:) -
New LithTech Engine?
Is this a new LithTech Engine? Or is this the one that comes with the Fruit Fucker 2000?

Missing the point yet againBlah blah blah Army blah blah games blah blah brainwash the youth of America... God, get over yourself.
Speaking as a hardcore gamer myself, I could care less about who makes a game. I couldn't care less about how it's distributed. I couldn't care less about how it's "brainwashing people" or how it's "like Toys!". It all comes down to one thing: Is the game fun? From what Penny Arcade tells me, it is going to be fun. That's all I care about.
This is what separates the average geek crowd from the true gamers among us. The average geeks don't understand what it really means to be a hardcore gamer. All they care about is how many polys a model has, how good it looks, or how the breasts are modeled ("She kicks high"). Hell, I'm 23 and I'll be playing Mario, Zelda, and dozens of other "kiddie" games the day they're released, and I don't care.
This is why I hate mainstream media coverage of games. Leave it to the professionals, please.

That's great, except...
Most of these game stores (EB and Babbages Etc./Funcoland stores) don't accept returns on consoles *period*. They will do an exchange only if the unit is defective, and only it it falls within a very small timeframe, unless you purchase an ESP replacement guarantee. Why is this the way that it is? They can't resell an opened system as new. The retail store's only option is to sell it in as a used system, which puts them at a loss. This isn't just the rules of the store, but want the console manufacturers want the retail stores to do. This is why they won't take them back.
There is also most likely no television that will not work with your unit. This excuse will not work, and the salespeople know this. If you have a problem, they will sell you an RF adapter. If you need an RF adapter your prehistoric GE television probably shouldn't be playing a Gamecube anyway.
This sums it up very well:
Want a refund on your Gamecube?
Now, there were a few stores that were offering refunds, but only if you bought it within a day or two of the recent price drops. -
Re:Refunds....
Check Out Penny Arcade's take on this.

Re:Refunds....
Here's a comic that sums it all up. http://www.penny-arcade.com/view2002-05-15rl.html
. But seriously, best buy does price matching. -
Holy cow!
Man, as Tycho of Penny Arcade put it, "It's on. This is that Clash of the Titans s**t."
-
Re:So, what hapenedto the game?
-
Re:pre-order here
Yes! And you can even use the "buy now and we'll never ever send it to you" technology!
-
Re:Where did you buy it?Gee. Read Penny Arcade much?
And I quote:
It was said that we'd see [Nintendo GameCubes] at around the one-fifty mark, but who knows if they'll be satisfied with a fifty dollar difference between themselves and their competitors, which cuts their prior advantage in half. You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see 'Cubes sell at one-fifty or one-seventy-five, and include a GameBoy Advance with that little cable thingy that hooks them together. I mean, I'm just talking. I have no idea if something like that would even be feasible, but it seems like a fantastic way to differentiate themselves.
Perhaps it was just a good idea that multiple people came up with simultaniously. Perhaps "Tycho" stole your idea. Who am I to say? -
