Star Wars Props Up For Auction

innocence18 writes "Auctioneers Profiles in History are set to auction off a number of Star Wars props from the original trilogy movies. Fromthe collection of Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz, the pieces on offer include Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader's lightsabers as well as various costumes and masks." While I can't imagine wanting to wear Luke's X-Wing flight suit, I think that light saber is pretty sweet. Although I bet it goes for the price of a new car.

      157. LUKE SKYWALKER HERO LIGHTSABER FROM STAR WARS. (TCF, 1977) This lightsaber used by Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker is the non-fighting version of the famous Jedi weapon. This particular version is constructed from an existing Graflex flash gun from the 1930s, and is fitted with black grips around the base. As with all Luke lightsabers created for the first Star Wars film, the black grips are attached with an adhesive. During production of the The Empire Strikes Back, problems arose during filming in Finse, Norway when the sub-zero temperatures caused the glue to freeze and the grips to fall off. After this experience, the grips were attached with rivets and/or screws. As such, this lightsaber can be positively identified with the first Star Wars film, although it may also have been used during the filming of The Empire Strikes Back since many original props and costumes were carried over into the second production. This lightsaber is in good condition for its age, but is missing the circuit board detailing usually attached to the clasp. The silver tape which originally covered the Graflex name has also been removed. An important and now iconic piece of Star Wars lore, this hero lightsaber used by Luke comes directly from the archive of Gary Kurtz, producer of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, and is accompanied with a letter of authenticity signed by Gary Kurtz and an additional letter of authenticity signed by Jason Joiner of the Kurtz / Joiner Archive. One would think that if they are planning on producing Episodes 7-9, that they would want Luke's original lightsaber as a prop. That's exactly the type of geeky - artsy - fartsy type thing Lucas and friends would want. So perhaps this is a good indicator that, as Lucas said recently, they will not be making the sequels.

I also can't believe that Lucas wouldn't have this thing sitting on the mantle in his living room - the ultimate status symbol of his power and reminder of the movies that made him millions (billions?).

Actually many of the machines of the era didn't support upper and lower case. Several didn't have 8-bit character sets -- 6-bit characters were common; but there simply isn't room in 6 bits to include the lower case characters. Hacks did exist to trick the terminal controllers into emitting mixed case, but the machines themselves didn't speak full ASCII. And certainly no compiler writer would have wasted the extra bytes supporting mixed case! Heresy!

There may be a third for Tour props. Like the Stormtrooper armor in the auction these are props made to be taken out and show to people. sometimes good sometimes bad, often they are beat up pretty bad by the time they'd get to an auction like this.
