Duke Nukem II sported a kick-ass soundtrack, I was blown away.
I hope the game doesn't contain such crap music like the trailer has. Really now, you can't kick ass, and chew bubble gum, without metal!

Hail to the king, baby! 2K Games and Gearbox Software today announced that Duke Nukem Forever will make its long-awaited debut in 2011, when it will ship on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Attendees of this weekend's Penny Arcade Expo will be able to go hands-on with the game at the 2K Booth (booth #3417), and see that it is very much alive. With this news, we are closing our Duke forums. However, fear not, as you can continue to talk with your fellow Duke fans in the new Dukem Nukem forums on GearboxSoftware.com.

3d Realms is taking it badly -- they forcibly closed all forums related to Duke Nukem, even the older ones. It looks like Take 2 stole their IP.
You should probably actually visit their forum before posting misinformation. What has actually happened is that the main forum moderator, Joe Siegler, has been hired by Gearbox to handle their Duke Nukem community. As such they have moved Duke Nukem related forums over to the new Gearbox forum.
See his posts here and here for confirmation.
Whether they now own the Duke Nukem IP is unknown as no announcements have been made one way or the other. -

They're really gone.
Apogee is saying ther are not affected by what happened to 3DRealms, and are refusing to say any more.

In my best interest, I'm going to be somewhat candid for now. I will, however, elaborate a bit on some things:
The 2001 trailer was 100% scripted cinematic, and not actual gameplay. They built specific demo maps just to record video from to make a trailer. Everything you see in that trailer was phony.
The typical work flow there went something like this: Designer would be assigned a task (build a new map, rebuild an old map, polish a bit of a map, etc.). Designer would work on said task for two, three weeks, a month, all the while lower management would be looking over it and making sure it was going in a "good general direction." Designer would move on to another task. A month or two later upper management would finally look at the work and say, "It's all wrong, do it again." Rinse, repeat.
Entire maps would be done from the ground up, almost to beta quality, and then thrown out simply because no one would make decisions early on in the process. (Read up on Valve's 'orange box' method of design -- that's how you make games)
Another example of WTF is the fact that there was one part of one map that was being worked on before I started working there. Nineteen months later and the same designer was still working on the same part of that same map... I'm not blaming the designer, it wasn't his fault.
I think the biggest problem that the company had in general is being self-funded. When you're a developer working directly with a publisher and you have milestones to meet it's a whole different ballgame. If you don't meet those milestones, you don't get any money. That right there will keep your project on schedule. If, however, you're funding it yourself, you don't really have anyone to answer to except yourself and you can quickly lose sight of just how much money is going out the door. -

I think most of there where to have fun and do what they liked. If you read their job posting, you'll see they offer revenue from sales of their projects and honestly are a cool company to work at. And that probably was what caused their shutdown, with all the EA and others just going for profits and making developers and programmers a slave.
Also see their company info page, theres lots of fun stuff. I wish I had worked there, they had a great mentality and fun in it.

- relies on the fact that *any* changes in the blueprint would be prohibitively expensive, could be, but just replacing components by pathways does not *sound* very expensive to me
- RSA key pair generation on chip: bad idea, RSA key pair generation can take a lot of time (ECC key pair generation could be used as a replacement), needs PRNG
- PRNG on chip might prove expensive (where does it get its entropy???)
- no mention of X509 or any other PKI scheme, lets hope they are smart enough to see that they need some form of key management scheme
- cost of maintaining a PKI (public key infrastructure) might be rather expensive, especially if both parties are new to the game
Overall, interesting idea, but I'm not so sure anyone would want this. Lots of hassle for the buyer without any benefits to him, this makes it 1) expensive, thus a less favourable solution to others without this scheme 2) more likely that they will screw up the PKI system that is needed for this to work.
Well, they called it EPIC, and we all know that it may take some time before EPIC products come out (e.g. this one :) -
Duke Nukem Forever is a conole exclusive of...The Atari 2600. I understand it's been terribly difficult porting the Unreal 3 engine to the system and that's what's been causing the constant delays.
It'll be worth it though...

Back in the day, Apogee games came up with a similar model. They put out the first in the series (usually 3 games) for free--I remember getting Commander Keen on a floppy disk with my joystick purchase. If you liked the first one, you could order the rest of the series for a nominal fee. It seemed to be a fairly successful business model.

Tux racer at two
I have played Tux racer with my girlfriends two year old daughter and she loves it. My girlfriend likes it too, she was just amazed and happy the first time she saw her daughter playing it. In the future I have thought that maybe in 3 or 5 she could start playing some old games like Jazz Jack Rabbit and Wacky Wheels, of course with supervision from either one of us.
I really don't see nothing wrong to let small children play games. The only question is what games and how much. I have thought myself that the games, played by children, should have no violence, no sexual content and no scary content, preferably no human characters. When children are older and understand clearly difference between a game and reality, then at the age of 9 - 12 they could with consent play some more serious games, but games with violence like GTA series should not be played before 16.

Apogee/3D Realms, shareware pioneer
Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen, Duke Nukem I, II, 3D, Monster Bash, Wacky Wheels. These are now at the 3d realms website.
BBSes provided a major launching ground for shareware and online text-based games like Tradewars, I remember dialing in with my 2400 baud modem every day tying up the phoneline for my daily fix. -

Sheesh! There's absolute NO WAY a publisher can please a pirate. The above is a FREE demo, so people can try-before-they-buy, AND THEY STILL PIRATE. Then to add salt to the wound, they complain. Maybe all the content creaters SHOULD go out of business, just to shut all the complainers up* (my money's on some BITCHIN about that too)

Yes, Prey was due out in 1998. This is 3d realms, and they finally released Prey, now imagine if Duke Nukem comes out this year. They'll have nothing to work on :(
The funniest thing is that they tout portal technology. Portal is due out with Episode 2 of HL2, producing a more interesting a better version of dynamic portals made by the player.

You can take solace in the fact that 3DR will remove the CD protection in a future patch. No word when the plan on doing that though.
