The Onion's A.V. Club has very good game reviews. They don't take themselves too seriously, and they answer the only question I care about with a game - should I buy it?

They also have the extremely entertaining Games of Our Lives, which consists of very funny reviews of old games (20+ years in most cases) written by Wil Wheaton.

I'd say that's probably based on what criteria you use for determining "bigness." The most famous person I can think of that has answered questions from Slashdot users (aside from some well-known tech industry people) is Wil Wheaton of "Star Trek" fame (who also is a regular poster on /.). TV is a vast wasteland of crap, with a few great exceptions like Galactica and Six Feet Under.

The blogosphere is full of nonsense, self-referential mental masturbation, and useless blogrolls. Then there are blogs like Daring Fireball, The Long Tail, and WWDNK which are each compelling in their own way.

Spam, though, is 100% crap. In that 10% lies the difference.

Lovecraft is hard to do right on film. Much of the mood of his stories comes from his use of archaic and unusual words in his descriptions (e.g. squamous, cyclopean), and his love of ancient myths and legends. It's hard to have a comprarable effect on the big screen where little can be left to the imagination.

My favorite film adaptation of one of his stories is Dagon. Despite the title, it's based on the story The Shadow Over Innsmouth, except it is set in a Spanish fishing village instead of New England. Other than that change, it does the best job I've seen of capturing the feel of one of his stories, and it manages to be truly horrifying in parts. Highly recommended.

A lesser movie that's still a pretty good adaptation of one of his movies is The Curse. It's an (uncredited) version of HPL's story The Color Out of Space, and it stars perrenial favorite Wil Wheaton.

I also want to second the recommendation of In the Mouth of Madness. Excellent stuff. While not based on one of his stories, it gets closer in feel than most existing movie adaptations.

FWIW, Wil Wheaton has posted an insightful article on this topic. Personally I didn't understand the difference between royalties and residuals, the difference in reasoning behind them, and agree with the criticism he raises about the divisive way this was handled between two ranks of creative professionals.

Amen to Wordpress. Using that and the AuthImage plugin, which requires commenters to type in a code displayed on an image (like Wil uses, although his is with MT) has been a GODSEND.

An example of the new business model: MacDesktops. They run by donations because they provide a good service.

Or affiliate programs, where people get a cut of stuff actually purchased through referrals from their site. Picture our friend Wil Wheaton posting a great review of something he really likes, like his iBook, and getting a cut of the profit whenever someone clicks through and buys it. I buy things from Amazon through AtAT because I really like their site and want to support them.

So the future net won't be like TV, it'll be like PBS; you pay for things you like and support through direct action.

Given that the man taught himself Linux for the purposes of running his own website, most of us would qualify him as intelligent.

I skim over his blogs about every other month, and recently he's taken up poker as a hobby. He's studied, practiced, etc, and blogs the stores of his experiences playing (LA, Vegas, and so on).

What have I learned by reading them? No, being smarter than the average person does not automatically make you a better poker player. Other things do.

That's "Every movie that you hear a lot about" which gets hyped to death. Did you see the trailer for "Spirited Away" before every film you watched for four months before it was released? No. Could you buy a "Totoro" Happy Meal containing a Kung-Fu-Grip Satsuki? No. Were you bombarded with "Buy it now before it's gone!" advertisements for "Castle in the Sky" when it was released on the USA? No. Did any of these movies suck? I don't think they did. At least I enjoyed them.

It has been my experience that the more a movie is hyped, the better it's chance sucking. (The reverse is only occasionally true.) It's important to remember that there still are films worth seeing which haven't been hyped to death or turned into vehicles for merchandising. Take a look at the Cannes Festival winners over the past decade or so -- Chances are you never even heard of most of them until they were turned into sad American remakes.

Look around. Don't believe that your only choices are to either settle for whatever crap the hype machine is trying to cram up your nether regions or stay at home spanking it like a crazed monkey while reading wilwheaton.net.

The Cinema is not dead, it's just trying not to be seen in public with its louder, more obnoxious cousin Hype.

Fremont, California - In a surprise announcement, GNAA has announced a truce and alliance with the popular news for trolls website Slashdot.

GNAA member godspeed broke the news at an early-evening press conference, announcing that GNAA would cease trolling the website, and will instead work with the current Slashdot staff on porting the Slashcode to ASP.NET, to be run under IIS.

"We've had our difference with Slashdot in the past," godspeed began, "but with recent slowdowns in performance on the website, they have finally realized that Opensource is indeed dead, and it's time to move on and replace their antiquated codebase with something that will meet the modern day's needs. We're pleased to be given the opportunity to work with the Slashdot staff on making this port. Of course, the new code will not be opensourced, an NDA will be signed in blood by all who see it and if you release it, the penalty... well, you've seen what happened to Nick Berg, Paul Johnson, and the others. Major changes to be implemented include the removal of goatse link evasion, major overhauls to the karma system, and the replacement of pinkpages with LastMeasure,"

At this point godspeed turned the podium over to fellow GNAA member goat-see and stormed out of the room. goat-see offered to take any questions the audiencemembers have. When asked why there were no Slashdot representatives at the conference, he was quick to reply "You can speak to CowboyNeal outside after we're through here, we couldn't get that motherfucker in here without widening the doorframes. Next question?," eliciting a hearty chuckle from the audience. When asked the reason for the sudden change in relations with Slashdot, goat-see paused to think for a moment, before answering "Our historical differences were meant to hilight the flaws in the Slashdot system. As soon as the staff realized what an impacted shitpile their site was and the need to update it, we were the first to volunteer to assist in the migration. We look forward to seeing the hight performace of ASP.NET pages with a MS SQL backend as much as any other nigger out there."

bare, a GNAA member sitting in the audience, stood up and confirmed this announcement with a hearty "LOL." goat-see concluded the conference at that point, saying "If you have any further questions, please direct them to new GNAA member Wil Wheaton, now let's all go outside and poke that fat fuck CowboyNeal with sticks."
