It wasn't mentioned in any of the movies. I don't think it was in any of the books that I read. Yet it's been hard fact for me for as long as I can remember. Does anybody remember where they first heard or read about this?

Another thing I've always been curious about is the details of the clone wars. They've been alluded to since Episode IV, but until the Timothy Zahn books came out hardly anything was known about them. From the Episode II trailer that I saw, it looks like we're actually going to see the clone wars in action. That oughta be cool. While it's true that attitude is a lot of the problem with the way that people are viewing the prequels, The Phantom Menace left a lot to be desired for me. I don't consider myself a Star Wars fan in that I read any related books (although I have leafed through a few that my borther has), but I worship episodes 4-6, because they are an adventure story and an allegory. In fact, I watced A New Hope in my tenth grade English class as an example of the genre of adventure stories, and we analyzed it for archetypes.

The problem I have with The Phantom Menace is manyfold, but mostly it comes down to the fact that it didn't do a good job of setting up the allegory of Star Wars for episodes 4-6. Now, my oppinion of The Phantom Menace is largely dependant on the semantics of how Anakin turns to the dark side. The title "Attack of the Clones" isn't very encouraging to me in that regard. The first thing that came to mind was "Attack of the Killer Tomotoes" -- why coulnd't the episode simply be name, "The Clone Wars?"

On that note, I loved a few things about The Phantom Menace, but only if "Attack of the Clones" and episode 3 deal with them properly:

      • The fact that Anakin will in fact bring balance to the force, but not the way that the paranoid Jedi council, who is haunted by perceptions of the Sith and other bad things as outnumbering them, imagines.
      • Anakin merely wants to free the slaves on Tatooine -- how will Palpatine warp innocent Anakin into the evil Darth Vader?
      • The council on Coruscant was manipulated by Palpatine to vote him as their leader in order to resotre order and justice against the "evil men," as Fearless Leader #43 would say, of the Trade Federation: what kind of new order will Palpatine enforce. This should be a big opportunity for Lucas to comment on how the "war" against terrorism is being used, much like the "war" against drugs, to curtail civil liberties.

There are many others, but those are the ones that come to mind at the moment. The problem is, with the whole Jar Jar debacle, I don't know if I can trust Lucas with his own story -- perhaps I'm looking too deeply into the Star Wars saga, but there's much more there than simply cool special effects, comedy, and neato light saber battles.

changed. Lines of text were condensed differently so the length of the
roll-up remained the same despite the addition of two lines at the

Answer: The Star Wars saga as originally conceived by Lucas was much too large to be made into a single film or even a single trilogy so Lucas structured his ideas into three trilogies.
He decided to make the middle trilogy (Episodes IV, V and VI) first because he believed it had the greatest chance of being a theatrical success.

An interesting point is that the "Chapter IV: A New Hope" sub-title did not appear until the 1979 re-release of the movie. Randal Schwartz says the following about the '79 release:
That was the one with the extended trailer for ESB, which came out the following summer. So the order was:

summer of '77: SW [no IV]
summer of '78: re-release of SW (no IV)
(but Westgate was still playing it)
summer of '79: retitled SW IV, with ESB trailer
      summer of '80: ESB
The reference to "Westgate" was that the Westgate theatre (just a few blocks from where I am typing this) was *still* playing it. They set the record worldwide for the longest continuous run for SW (sans IV), something like 79 weeks. So, naturally, it wasn't a "re-release" for summer of '78. (We web-footed Oregonians see a *lot* of movies. :-)

Empire Strikes Back (1980) was always sub-titled Chapter V and Return of the Jedi (1983) was always sub-titled Chapter VI. I paused the trailer at two minutes, two seconds, grab a screen shot of Natalie Portman's ass and couldn't help but notice that she's handcuffed to the side of the vehical they're riding in. I couldn't tell if Anakin is cuffed or not. I wonder what it means?

There's a pool here over whether this will be modded up as insightful or funny, or not at all. I'm betting on insightful.

Seriously, we've ALL seen Episode 4,5, and 6. We know that Anakin is going to hook up with the queen, we know he's going to get pissed at ObiWan, we know they're going to have kids (one of which Anakin doesn't know about), we know ObiWan and Anakin are going to fight in the clone wars, and we know Anakin is going to get jacked in the clone wars.

shess... who doesn't know what is going to happen? We've seen the begining and the end of the story... we're not morons...right?

    And those, are my ruminations.

George seems to be recycling a bit in the way of previous designs, such as the Naboo runner from the original Ralph McQuarrie designs for episode 4...

  133. Destroys the argument for DVD region lockout by yerricde · · Score: 2

Star Wars Episode 2 release to theaters in US is May 16, 2002; 20th century is aiming to get as near as possibly simulatenous release in the UK.

If Fox manages to pull off a simultaneous theatrical release in major markets and then a simultaneous DVD release in major markets, Fox won't be able to hide behind the "staggered release schedule" argument for region lockout. Once AOTC hits second-run theaters, why don't we all go ask Fox to make the DVD region-free?
