New Star Wars Episode II Trailer Out
danov writes: "A new trailer for Star Wars Episode II has been released on Apple's website. It's called "Forbidden Love"." Don't watch this one if you want to be surprised when you see the movie. It gives away most of the plot. You have been warned. Update: 11/16 12:49 GMT by M : If you get "referral denied", just hit reload. Silly Apple.
hmm.. link is broken already and no posts
Shouldn't read the posts too, if you want to have the surprise :)

/forbidden for some reason...
You can't go direct to
It won't let slashdot refer people there. Startup a clean browser & copy + paste the URL, and it works fine. Preemptive slashdot effect nerf? :)
One must refer to the actual html page to get to the goodies.
No, it does not give away most fot he plot. If anything, the "Mystery" trailer released last week gives away more of the plot. This one, from a plot perspective, focuses on the romance, which we all know is happenning anyway.
I have been very carefull not to read spoilers online. I have watched all the trailers and I can safely say that I don't feel spoiled.
Justin
I mean, who was supposed to know that Amidala and Anakin fell in love? And that there would be fighting involving lightsabers? Damn it, Lucas, I wanted the plot to be a surprise! The next thing you know, Obi-wan will push Anakin into lava!

download it from here. Enjoy!
Doesn't that sounds more like a Ron Jeremy movie than a George Lucas movie?
Is it just me or does playback of this thing *require* Quicktime Pro @ $29.99 ?
It has a plot? Well, thats one improvement over The Phantom Menace then...

I stripped the "/forbidden" off of the url and got a file not found error. Then I hit the back button and I was able to view the trailor.
You'll need to choose medium or small unless you've paid for quicktime pro.
That which does not kill me only makes me whinier
What's the deal with requiring quicktime pro to view the large format trailer?!
Can't go directly to the URL for some reason. Go to http://www.apple.com/trailers/, and then click on the Episode 2 banner. Awesome Trailer!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant wait, this is an amazing trailer.
...is anyone doing a South Park Episode 2 trailer this time round ? :-)

Hey, I'll give you the plot of the whole film.
Mainly Geogre Lucas will be making much money by recycling an old and braindead SCI-FI movie be creating new films on the topic which contain no decent storyline but much special effects and computer animated pictures. Because the ending of the last movie of the old ones had left no sensible possibility to create any sequels, Mr. Lucas will have the innovative and cunning idea of creating prequels.
And now the most important thing of the plot: many coloured things will expode (especially in vacuum with a loud "kaboom !). And some guys will jump around.

It would be nice to see Apple post something in a standard format like .mpg

Large size
Neither need quicktime 5.0.2 PRO they just say that on the html page.... Work fine in normal fre quicktime 5.0.2
A link available here to the 2nd teaser which is supposedly only for owners of the Ep 1 DVD.

What's this? You have to have QT5 Pro ($29.95) to see the largest version of the trailer! The "Medium" is only about 2"x4"... that may be generous. I want my 640x480 trailers, a la LoTR...

The trailer is also available on starwars.com, in case Apple's too Slashdotted for your liking. :)

Here's my plan:
1) Kill the actor playing Annakin
2) Take acting lessons
3) Beat out everyone else during the screen test for Episode III so *I* can be the one that gets to be Luke's father, if you catch my drift.
Imagine if Episode III were rated XXX...

You know, I'd be annoyed with Apple for preventing people linking to the trailer directly, and once again requiring an upgrade to quicktime pro for the hi-res version... if the trailer wasn't so drenched in schmaltz that I nearly physically barfed.
But... I suppose I better swallow hard a few times, take a sip of water and make the suggestion that we put the trailers on various P2P networks... post filenames, and once you've got the trailer... share it, please?
shut up man
Anyone else notice the guy in the vader-like cape who looked liked Sean Connery? Was it really him?
Don't worry, Be Happy, Eat Chicken.
Not only am I at work trying to view a trailer but the "must have pro version" crap mad me think "where can I get a serial".

No, as a previous post pointed out, you can go directly to the large trailer and watch it in regular, free Quicktime. It might give you a referer error the first couple times, but if you click around a bit it'll work eventually.
Sigh...

Does anybody else get the feeling that this is turning out to be the Star Wars adaptation of Jane Austen, starring Wesley Crusher as Annakin
I still don't know what's going on in the movie.

This may not fit in with the cynical view most Slashdot posts have, but I think Episode 2 is looking good, especially in the trailer above (the new trailer was mediocre)
It looks like Episode 2 will have a lot of conflict in it, and conflict is what makes stories interesting. Anakin's conflict with the Jedi Knights, the conflict him and the Princess must feel over whether they should follow their love, and of course lots of good old fashioned battle conflict.
Also, who can resist a good old fashioned love story? The love elements in episodes 4-6 was always weak, this looks like it's really solid.

Ah, it all becomes clear; Anakin turned to the dark side because the Jedi wouldn't let him get his freak on with Natalie Portman. Silly Jedi, what were they expecting?
Star Wars Episode 2 release to theaters in US is May 16, 2002; 20th century is aiming to get as near as possibly simulatenous release in the UK.

Here's a much better quality version of the Myster trailer (Quicktime).
That's the only way to explain how horrible it is. "Someday I will be the most powerful Jedi ever." Did someone get *paid* to write that line? I sure hope not. And oh, big shocker, he blames Obi Wan.
Granted, I've only seen a few seconds of his performance, but the "human" (highly suspect) that's playing Anakin looks like he's doing a high school play. They're called actor's, George. Look into hiring them.
For those whining about the love plot in the movie, go watch the originals again. They always had that.
This also shows you why Anakin ends up going to the dark side and how the conflict starts. This isn't just some tacked on plot.
Cool, I just watched the trailer in a window in windows in a window in vmware. Frame. By. Slow. Frame. At 1 frame per second. Who said this was short? Heck, it took the queen 20 seconds to say one word. Now that's cool. Anyhow, did anyone spot any balance issues on the part of the cast. (Like the one on epI where Darth Mal nearly falls on his own into the reactor core after they get through the laser walls.)

Sorry, but you wind up going to Akamai's mirror either way.
I am thinking specifcally thinking of Sigfreid. This raised all kinds of uproar at the time of it's premier because of the way that it it went counter to the morals of the day (regarding forbidden loves, etc).

Yeah, here are all the dates.
Did anyone notice the little scene in the middle of the trailer, where Anakin carries a couple of suitcases.
They sure look like Samsonite suitcases to me. Since when did Jedi Knights travel with such earthly baggage?
Well, according to supershadow.com (who claims to have the complete plot of Ep II and a draft for Ep III)... stop reading here if you dont like spoilers .... there are many more Sith than 2. All the others wont appear before Ep 3. Count Dooku is an ex-Jedi who joined the Sith.
To me, the Clone Wars is the ultimate climax of the Star Wars Universe. Luke defeating Vader pales in comparison.
I like that part where the dude who looks like Sean Connery whips out the red light saber. ALso likin' the Boba Fett. Not likin' the lovy dovy crap. Mo evil makes better movie.
The GeekNights podcast is going strong. Listen!
All the griping I've read about how "horrible" Episode I was, and Episode II will be, makes me think that people who think that aren't looking at the movies with the right attitude.
"Great cinema" they are not. But these movies aren't intended to be Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. If you want that kind of movie, go see it. This isn't it, and it isn't intended to be it.
I saw Episode I several times in the theater, and I now own the DVD, and I've enjoyed the use of the money I spent.
I went to see Episode I looking for several things:
- Cool special effects
- A decently entertaining script
- A great light sabre battle at the end
- The first part of a story whose ending I already know
I got every one of those things, and I was very pleased.
I didn't expect Oscar-quality acting, spine-tingling plot lines, statements on the human condition, or exploration of some societal quandry. I didn't get them. Star Wars isn't that kind of movie; it isn't intended as that kind of movie.
Star Wars is a series of movies where you don't have to think real hard about them. Sometimes I want a movie that will challenge me (Schindler's List, Philadelphia). Sometimes it can be fun to just turn your brain off and watch something mindlessly amusing (Something About Mary, Rollerball (the original), A Knight's Tale, Logan's Run). Star Wars is in this second category.
Whether or not you enjoy Star Wars Episode II for what it is, I think, depends a lot on what you expect.
Remove the caps and hold to a mirror.
I can already picture our geek children quoting these movies:

try to make ends meet, you're a slave to money, then you die
Was I the only one here who thought that the trailer boded well for Episode II? Grow up, people, and consider that what you saw made some sense. If Anakin is truly in love with Amidala and Obi-Wan nails him with Jedi rhetoric it is entirely understandable that he'd be pissed. We KNOW that the Skywalkers are an unstable family anyway...
As for the complaints about acting, I think we all forget the wonderfully talented Oscar-level performance of Mark Hamill has whiny-boy, er, Luke Skywalker. Saying that "you've grown" seems entirely appropriate for the situation. Similarly, "I'll be the greatest Jedi ever" is exactly the sort of thing an angry unstable twenty-something whose mad at the galaxy would say in a moment of duress.
Finally, the action scenes are looking reasonably decent. Anyone else notice Boba Fett? Christopher Lee? If Lee does his usual good turn it should be a lot fun. Finally, NO Jar-Jar anywhere in the trailer. This is a Good Thing. More than anything, I think it suggests that Lucas listened to the public outcry about said abomination.
No statement is true, not even this one.
The point there is they have a different form of government to what we have here. The term "Queen" is an honorary title, most likely kept for the sake of tradition.
Naboo is a different planet. They have a different culture. In some cultures right here, a person is considered an adult at 12.
A life form that exists inside all living things. Their density is indicative of how "in touch" with the force a particular life form happens to be.
You got me
Well, their life did hang in the balance there, and the solution Artoo came up with for restoring power was not one that would have been expected for a droid - Artoo improvised with what he had and saved them. That's why he was given a commendation.
Some mumbo jumbo about a prophecy.
Shhhhh..... Writer's error.
Beggars can't be choosers. In Ep4-6, the Jedi are all but extinct. Luke showed great promise, so they immediately wanted to get him on track.
He's young. Give him time.
It's some sort of indiciation that a person is in training to become a full Jedi. It's sorta silly, but in the "Making of Episode 1", George remarked on it.
Suspension of disbelief. It's something we do when we watch movies. That wasn't supposed to be makeup - they all look like that.
Erm... yes. :)
Geeze, you overanalyze too much, you know? Why don't you just sit back and actually enjoy the story? Okay, to quick sum it up: Obiwan and Quigon were stranded on Tatooine. Winning money in the pod race was the most expeditious way to get them off the planet. Besides, if they had cut the whole race out, the movie would have been a fair sight shorter, and what sort of Star Wars movie doesn't even run for 2 hours? :)
He's supposed to be a rebel.
Okay, now I need to get a life, I'm sure. :)

Since he was carrying the bags of senator.
Well, if the trailer is any indication of Anakin's behavior throughout the movie, then its fairly clear that whining must be a genetic trait in the Skywalker family.
That or Lucas just has a bad habit of picking whiney actors for his lead roles...

This is probably against ./ party line, but Natalie Portman is a horribly wooden actress. Plus the stilted dialogue doesn't help. I'll watch it anyways though.
The #$%#@ quicktime installer just blew chunks on my somewhat clean Windows2k development system. If they hope to survive against Microsoft (and they won't), they have to do a much better job with their player.
The idea that I have to register two different times is also lame.
The more I learn about science, the more my faith in God increases.
It seems appropriate that Lee is in a Star Wars movie since he did so many movies with Peter Cushing who most people know from Episode IV as Gov. Tarkin. I wonder if Tarkin's charactor shows up in the prequels?
We finally get to see the new Sith Lord, and if you notice his lightsabre has a curved handle.
The last shot is Anakain taking the head off of what looks like Tusken Raider.
Anakin and Padme are in the same room as Luke, C3PO and R2D2 were in Episode 4.
Anakin is riding a swoop bike on the old pod race track where he won the Boonta Eve race.
Jar Jar is in what looks like Senatorial robes in the second scene.
"TK-421, why aren't you at your post?"
Did anyone else notice 2 minutes into the trailer that Anakin & Amidala are in some type of transport in chains???

I need to get the Pro version of their stinking player just to see a large (well, larger, slightly) version of their trailer which is designed to make me shell out the $10 (lets face it, by that time it'll be at least $10) to see a movie? In effect an ad?
That's asking a bit much after putting out a movie that was, for all intents and purposes, a large steaming pile of... well you get the idea.

> The term "Queen" is an honorary title, most likely kept for the sake of tradition.
.... it should definately be kept quite.
Hmmm, maybe, but no effort was made to explain why. All it would have taken was a comment about traditions.
> In some cultures right here, a person is considered an adult at 12.
I doubt you would find a 12 year old elected to be in charge of a country, let alone a planet.
> Shhhhh..... Writer's error.
Considering how much they spent on the film
> Suspension of disbelief. It's something we do when we watch movies.
Yes I know, but thats not really what I meant. The story isn't being consistant within itself, I mean c'mon I accept the flying spaceships, the lightsabres, lightspeed travel and all the other stuff, but on the one hand to say the Sith are secrative and then choose someone who just sticks out like a saw thumb. It seems we are being asked not only to suspend out disbelief for the film, but also to ignore the story it tells.
> Geeze, you overanalyze too much, you know?
Maybe your right, but in the end it only my opinion - I thought the podrace was fun to watch and had great graphics, it just didn't gel with the story. Maybe I just like things to be consistent. Maybe I am disapointed that George Lucas couldn't produce what I wanted.

If they wanted to get around paying for bandwidth, they'd release it on Morpheus and not worry about it. I think it's Apple's futile attempt to make money on a VIEWER. Tons of ppl got QT3 when Ep1 trailers came out, I think Apple's trying to get some money from it this time. Talk about slimey. I think MS has the right strategy with Media Player, at least in the shadow of making you pay $30 for the privelage of watching promotional videos.

Why was a Queen elected? The very fact that she is a Queen makes election, well stupid.
It may be that on Naboo, generally the role of queen is ceremonial; it was only the Trade Federation invasion and the fact she was free that made her more essential than usual.
surely if you were trying to lie low (which is what I assume the sith do) why be so bloody obvious with black makeup and horns.
Perhaps his force skills include a "Somebody else's problem" field, so most people simply don't notice his appearance. Or perhaps his species actually all look like that.

Obviously we knew there was going to be some form of romance there, but remember at the end of Ep 1? We thought Anakin's mother getting killed was going to be a central reason for him going to the Dark Side. I think we have a different angle on that, thanks to the trailer.
I watchted it anyway, but then again, I won't be in the states when it gets released, so...

Where does the aunt and uncle come that Luke stays with during Ep. IV come into play? What about the people that Leia stays with when she is growing up? Maybe it's all just a ploy... in Ep. III Anakin will find out that Amadala is really his sister, and they clone Anakin to make Luke...
Here me out. I'd like to see JarJar beaten within an inch of his life and tortured the rest of the way, just like anyone else, but let's be honest about what's going on.
Lucas thought JarJar was a good idea. He went with him in TPM. The masses cried bloody murder. Obviously, whatever reasons Lucas might have for using JarJar would still be applicable at this point of the story -- because he's consistently been creating these stories with the big picture in mind -- and if JarJar were to be taken out it'd basically be because he as compromising artistic integrity for the fans.
Arguably, in a creative sense he was already on this route (would you describe the alien species in TPM as more creative or derivative?), but if he'd been this sort of waffler in his development on the original trilogy, the product probably would have been lukewarm and we wouldn't enjoy it as much.
Just a thought.

Bleah! Heh heh heh... BLEAH BLEAH!!! Ha ha ha ha...
So now we know who Luke's mother is (wild guess here, but not really), does this mean she has twins?
Does Anakin "accidently" kill her in Ep3? Thus sealing his fate as a dark jedi?

I remember seeing it as a kid, thinking, "What the heck is this Episode 4 business?"
On an aside, Ep.4 was SO different, even from 5 and 6 in terms of pacing and direction -- there were actually SLOW moments! Probably because it was the only one Lucas actually directed. Just watch the original (not special edition) and you'll see what I mean.

This post expresses my opinion, not that of my employer. And yes, IAAL.
After watching that trailer I have to say I'm reminded of a scene out of a movie I really like.
Luke: I'm not afraid.
Yoda: You will be.
Before I saw Hayden Christensen (Anakin) act, I could easily say I wasn't afraid of Episode II. All the naysayers said I would be once I saw more footage from it. Now, after seeing him give his little temper tantrum in that trailer, I'm afraid my fear is going to lead to suffering in the theater.
That medium version is so small that Ewan McGregor was looking like Kiefer Sutherland (when he played the Young Guns series)...

Shame on George Lucas for dangling first incest and now bestiality before impressionable young minds.
Johnny Quest has two Daddies.
The sun will come up tomorrow morning...
Give me a break. When are they going to actually make a new Star Wars like the original. Creative, futuristic, ... .
The last Star Wars was way under my expectations and I've had a lot of people agreeing with me.
Hopefully this will not be another star wars clone because this one is attacking.
wait for lots of natalie portman naked & pertrified postings
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever" -- David St. Hubbins, Spinal Tap
Luke: Left behind by all of his friends, and his parents are killed. He has nothing left except to join the revolution.
Obi-Wan: He responds to a desperate plea from the rebellion to join the war even though he knows he is too old.
Leia: She is fighting for freedom, and her whole world has been destroyed.
Han: Desperate for money because of a bounty on his head. He'll do anything to pay off the deathmark.
But what about the Phantom Menace:
Qui-gon: Following orders.
Obi-wan: Following orders.
Anakin: Happy kid.
Amidala: Her republic is under seige.
Darth Sidous: Evil is fun.
Darth Maul: Tired of hiding.
Jar-Jar: Rejected from home because of clumsiness.
Take the climax of Star Wars (the original): Luke has gone on the suicide mission because he has nothing to lose. He turns off his targeting computer because he has had a leap of faith in the force. This isn't enough, though, and Darth Vader is set to kill him, but is thwarted because Han Solo has had a leap of faith of his own and has come to help the fight. The only reason the mission is a success is because of the personal growth of the characters, and this makes for a great climax.
But what about the climax for TPM? Anakin accidentally kills the main driod control ship, and Jar-Jar accidentally fights on the ground. Do any characters grow, or realize anything from the fight? Qui-gon dies, but how does this affect Obi-wan? I felt nothing for the characters because I didn't understand them. They won their battles out of pure luck AKA the force.
If they explain the characters and their passions everything else will fall into place!
I tried the link to the $102,360 Camcorder but all that comes up is:

Look in at around 19sec in the full trailer, he's on the left side.
Om, nomnomnom...
There's a pool here over whether this will be modded up as insightful or funny, or not at all. I'm betting on insightful.
if you know what I mean ;)
Hollow words will burn and hollow men will burn.
For anyone who doesn't have quicktime, or just doesn't want to download the trailer, TheForce.net has posted some screen captures, about 50 in all.
I downloaded all 27.9MB of the large trailer, but Quicktime Player just launched Internet Explorer and sent me back to the trailers site.
Seriously, we've ALL seen Episode 4,5, and 6. We know that Anakin is going to hook up with the queen, we know he's going to get pissed at ObiWan, we know they're going to have kids (one of which Anakin doesn't know about), we know ObiWan and Anakin are going to fight in the clone wars, and we know Anakin is going to get jacked in the clone wars.
shess... who doesn't know what is going to happen? We've seen the begining and the end of the story... we're not morons...right?
"Things are more moderner than before- bigger, and yet smaller- it's computers-- San Dimas High School football RULES!"
1.) Natalie Portman is still terribly gorgeous.
2.) I would like a couple of Yodas around the house, just to give guests that sneer.
3.) It looks cool, but why is Anakin riding an enormous Klingon disruptor about 3/4 the way through the trailer?
And those, are my ruminations.

Star Wars Episode 2 release to theaters in US is May 16, 2002; 20th century is aiming to get as near as possibly simulatenous release in the UK.
If Fox manages to pull off a simultaneous theatrical release in major markets and then a simultaneous DVD release in major markets, Fox won't be able to hide behind the "staggered release schedule" argument for region lockout. Once AOTC hits second-run theaters, why don't we all go ask Fox to make the DVD region-free?
Will I retire or break 10K?
Did anyone else notice the scene where Amidala had her hair in those damned earmuffs?
