Star Wars Episode III Teaser Trailer Today
gotroot801 writes "TheForce.net reports that the Episode III teaser trailer will be available today for viewing on several TV shows in the US (MTV's TRL, Access Hollywood) and Australia (Today Show). In addition, starwars.com Hyperspace members and AOL customers will be able to download the trailer today."
"... Lucasfilm also indicated that the trailer will be available via Usenet and BitTorrent, and that the complete film was officially released last week on IRC."
Telling me George Lucas isn't directing would be a real teaser.
AOL customers will be able to download the trailer today

I already read the plot leaks, about the lava surfing etc, I'll go see it anyway but I know the moment I see the trailer I'll probably be disappointed.
I think the best part of the trailer is the Jar-Jar decapitation scene...oh wait, that was from a dream I had last night.
Now where did I put that Princess Amadala blow-up doll...

I can't imagine how badly Lucas is going to mess up how Anakin becomes Darth Vader.

Wait a minimum of 1 week after the movie's release before seeing it. This act in itself would send a message that people were not happy with the prequels if lots of people did it.
Some people will undoubtedly see it right away. If they say that the movie was actually good, then feel free to go and see it after your week of abstinence. If they say the movie was as shitty as the last 2 then wait 1 more week. Repeat as you see fit.

I can only imagine how incredibly bad Episode III will be.

"TK-421, why aren't you at your post?"
The first 45 seconds are from the previous movies (Episode 1, 2, and 4), but the rest looks really cool. Looks like Yoda gets to fight some more, and apparently Darth Sideous has a lightsaber, too. Obi Wan looks like he gets his ass handed to him by Anakin.
I hope the entire movie won't have that yellow "H" in the bottom right hand corner, though. Kinda distracting.

You don't have to see it just because it's Star Wars. That doesn't mean anything anymore. Save your cash and buy a good Star Wars game instead.
Dear god.. how far into the land of stupid can Lucas go?
I couldnt even finish epII.. 1/2 way and i gave up and turned it off.
---- Booth was a patriot ----
Just saw it. Anakin gets red-rimmed yellow contacts to show he's evil. The wookies are taking over where the ewoks left off. Alec Guinness does the narration/explanation for most of the trailer... Thank goodness there was some decent monologues in Star Wars.
Of course, AOL folks get the "The making of" mini documentaries, where we all get to rage at the loving detail of George Lucas retrofitting explanations to his choices. It's fun! Could almost make a drinking game out of them.

It was a TEASER TRAILER, not the FULL TRAILER. Star Wars teasers in fact show much more than teasers from most other movies.

It's nice that you have to be a member of some shitty online Star Wars site (or one of its affiliates) to watch an advertisement for the new Star Wars movie. It's like paying to beta test a new version of Daikatana.

You know it's funny, all of these "hardcore" star wars geeks complain about the changes and ideas that Lucas comes up with, bash the prequels, etc.; and yet, they will be the ones camping outside of the local Megamovieplex with their Jar Jar sleeping bags dressed in full Jedi costume with toy lightsabers just to see the first showing of the movie. THEN they will go out and buy 10 different versions of that SAME 4-6 movies just to complain about them all over again.
If you think/know it's going to suck so bad, why even go see it? Would you go see Gigli 2 or Bride of Chucky, then buy the DVD and collectors edition DVD just to complain about them as well?
My point is that no one is forcing you to watch the movies. If you don't like them or the direction they're heading in, then don't support them. Unfortunately, this is the only way Lucas will get the message because he has already publicly stated that he doesn't give a fuck about the fans' opinions; and why should he since he is practically the RJ Rynolds of the Sci Fi world with millions (if not billions) of addicts feening for just a taste.
Don't get me wrong. I like the (original) Star Wars. I think the Episode 4 was/is a great movie and I can't count how many times I have seen it. Episode V was very good as well. But I think maybe it is because there was less money involved back then (either for special effects or with merchandising). They had to work on the characters and acting more because they didn't have such a huge budget for special effects (i.e. they didn't rely on special effects as much to 'make' the story).
I think the more they rely on 'green screens' and CGI, the poorer the quality of the movie, specifically the story. And I think when Lucas relies increasingly on the movie to be a big commercial for his merchandising efforts (e.g. Jar Jar Binks) it ruins the movie.
I don't plan on seeing this in the theatre. I plan on renting it. I am gun shy after the last two releases. I don't believe they were worth the exorbintant cost of today's movie tickets (never mind the hassle of going through the morgage application to pay for my popcorn and drink).

Really, do you think that George Lucas is concerned about the $50 million you might cost him in your scenario? According to Forbes, the guy is worth $3 billion, and that estimation was calculated before the original trilogy was released on DVD. Even if Episode III was panned by the critics and early audiences he'd still make his money and then some from the deal he has in place with 20th Century Fox, merchandising, etc.
Debt? The guy could probably fund the movie ten times over without having to raid his savings account.
Stay away for two weeks if it gives you a warm fuzzy glow inside. Just don't pretend that it'll make a blind bit of difference to how Lucas does business or interacts with his audience.

What a wunderfull idea to spoil my birthday :D
Actually, having worked in the film distribution industry I'd have to debate these figures.
In the first week you usually would get between 55-65% of box office on the first weeks take, however since this is such a huge release I'd say it would run more about 75% at most. Second week would usually drop 5%, and then after that you usually drop to 40-50% of total take. After week 4 you may go as low as 35%.
Now this number of course is what goes directly to the distributor. The amount that goes to the filmmaker themselves would be negotiated outside of that.

While the plot in all of the Star Wars has never been, say, Citizen Kane material, the first three were certainly not all about special effects. Okay, Carrie and Mark are not the greatest actors in the world; but the cast at least had some dynamics. Nothing like that in these new ones.

The first time I saw Episode II (in the theatres), I wanted a lobotomy. But the second time, since I knew to expect and therefore ignore Hayden Christianson(sp?)'s terrible acting, I was actually able to somewhat enjoy the movie (much in the same way I occasionally enjoy mindless action flicks...)

I guess it makes sense this came before the BitTorrent article.
I was about to take exception to this (being in the visual FX industry), but then I realised I'd read it as the more they use , rather than rely. But I agree with what you really said, mostly.
VFX are a tool to convey the story like any other, they just happen to be a popular and easy-to-overuse tool. Like building a house using only a hammer, just because it's such a cool thing to hammer with, & because everyone likes watching you use it. You might be able to charge admission while you're building, but nobody's going to want to live in the result.
Hollywood simply realised that people apparently were prepared to pay good money for a couple of hours of eye candy, without being necessarily burdened by a story, and that this was easy to provide on a regular basis. This is fine, the problem is only that you just need to know in advance whether to expect a story or not.
In the absence of more helpful movie labelling laws, read the reviews first so that you know which movie is which. For those that want story and flash, they do come by occasionally, just don't set your expectations too high for everything you see or you'll just be disappointed...

Starting the trailer with Alec Guinness is very interesting. On one hand we're reminded how a guy sitting on a bench can be a hundred times better than the multi-million dollar CGI characters that followed (and just how atrocious they were). On the other hand, maybe, just maybe (eternal optimist) it's Lucas code for "I'm sorry, I realize what I did wrong. I'm going back to basics".

Out of all the movies, episode 2 is actually my favorite. If you watch episode 1, Jar Jar isn't as annoying. If you watch episode 2, the romance isn't as bad. Episode 2 really sets up the next movie well and the entire last half was bad assed.

Personally, the dialogue from their romance actually sounds like something that might have come out of my mouth. Yes I'm a romantic who can sometimes talk in meladramatic hyperbole.
Take a movie like terminator 3, I enjoyed that too, but the only thing that movie did well was set up the 4th movie. I wonder if Arnold will have trouble getting around to the 4th movie being governer and all.
