Re:Where's the justification?
Here are some interesting numbers from the primary Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory download site, a free game produced by splash damage that has a native Linux client in addition to Windows and Mac OS X clients.
- Windows Downloads: 414,792
- Linux Downloads: 104,975
- Mac OS X Downloads: 38,518
I think it's safe to infer that in the demographic that would download a high quality free multiplayer game available on all three platforms, Linux appears to be about 3x more viable a target platform than Mac OS X, and 1/4th as viable as Windows. This may be due to the lack of quality games on the Linux platform, however, and a higher percentage of Linux users are acquiring the game as opposed to Windows users that have a much larger choice of games available to them.

Re:But it may be higher for PC games
Ahhh, an old C&C fan like me, welcome brother. Hail Kane! Glad you liked GOG, they really treat you right and if it works good in Wine please post to their forums, as I'm sure your info will be valuable. Oh and just a little prezzy from a fellow NOD in case you didn't know, here is completely free non pirate C&C Tiberian Sun and the original C&C Red Alert for ya. They released both games for free to drum up interest in the newest one, so if you don't find those links fast enough just Google there are plenty of places to pick them up. Death to GDI!

Re:Why single out games?
1.6MB is rather large for a simple unlock key, so its more likely a patch which has been compressed.
And if this were 1996, that might be plausible. But a patch today can be larger than an entire installation from just a few years ago.

You can get the Ubisoft games from Gamer's Hell or FileShack too.

FileShack will have HD videosFileShack, part of Shacknews are going to be filming the demos/trailers/videos with their HD camera, as they did last year.
They have a queue-based download system that's free, although queues will probably be pretty long during E3. I do believe, however, that the first month's subscription, allowing you to skip queues, costs $1.

Re:So its still vaporware then
In production means nothing. It could still not make it through to gold, because, lets face it, no game can live up to expectations of a 10 year wait. Trying to make a game fun is the hard bit.
You're right, but consider this - they've restarted twice and this recent bit (and others) make it sound like this is a final push. Plus, go watch the 2001 Trailer (which represents a game they've since tossed and started over). Dated graphics aside, it does look like they're doing something pretty awesome there. I think that's going to be DNF's strong point - regardless of graphics, they're going to be doing things with a game which push the boundaries of what we've seen before.Plus, for all the pissing and moaning about lame games pushed out for the wrong reasons, we have the potential here to see the game equivalent of a great novel that's not published until the writer thinks it's perfect (like Gone with the Wind, which also took ten years).

Re:Double Dragon
Watch this movie about the new Motral Kombat

To me that seems exactly like the 'next generation' of the side-scrollers like Double Dragon and Bad Dudes. -
Re:I'll mock away.
Quake was still something you'd "Exit into DOS mode" for.
I'm surprised at how many people forget stuff like this. I suppose noone remembers WinQuake?
(Ah, how fondly I remember watching packets for my game server die trying to get out MAE-East, and how all the affected players suddenly appeared to be wearing skates due to the fresh new client-side prediction code. On occasions where it got particularly bad, we'd compliment each other on our triple-axels.) -

Anyone who hasn't played it should check it out [torrentspy.com].
Or, you could cough up twelve bucks and just buy the damn game!

here...
only the win32 server for now...
Still not the linux one, which will be released... -
Anyone can find the file ?
Here they announce the beta is available on Shacknews but I cannot find it, which is a bit frustrating... full text here under
:
"id Software's Robert Duffy updated his .plan file tonight to announce an open beta test for the Win32 DOOM 3 patch at Shacknews, an update in which he also commented on the status of the Linux dedicated server:
We have released the first update for DOOM 3 as a beta and on a limited scale ( it is only available on the File Shack at www.shacknews.com ). We don't anticipate any issues with it but felt it best to get it into the hands of a few thousand people rather than the entire customer base in case we missed something. We will release the update through our update server for wide release once we have verified there are no problems with it.
We will be releasing another update in the near future that will include Punk Busters cheat protection functionality for DOOM III.
The SDK is also ready to go and as soon as the update is out in non beta form the SDK will be made available for download.
The Linux Dedicated server is also ready to go and will also be available as soon as the update is non beta.
Presumably, this indicates the Linux client isn't all that far away either."
I found here all the I could on doom 3 and Id software in Fileshack...
So, almighty Slashcrowd, who can help mefind the precious , working Doom 3 for Linux ? -

Well, the site's slashdotted now, but UT's source code was released, although the license isn't GPL..

Patch Link, Plus Review of pre-patch
They only list Windows (.exe) patches, so I found the Linux patch (73MB) here http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4442"
I also have a review with screenshots I wrote of it (pre-patch) here.
I think Savage is a great game. Hell, even the game itself aside, I bought it because they put on the requirements "Windows OR Linux" on the box. That's worth my money alone. I support those companies who support Linux. -
Re:Dumbed down combat
The game, as a whole is great, although there are a few bugs which are supposed to be addressed in an upcoming patch.
Rejoice! The patch has been available for over a week now. -

Re:Let's hope they plan on releasing the installer
Why would you need to buy another copy? The game assets are here (1.13GB). All you need is a CD Key and some FileShack patience (which would be cheaper than buying the game again).

Re:So when are they going to re-open the beta?
Valve (or whoever has the rights) made a deal with FileShack to provide the beta to fileshack mercury subscribers. It's an extremely cheap service and well worth the price. I've had it for going on 7 or 8 months now.

Re:Not on GameSpy
A bit offtopic, but still:
I've been using fileshack for awhile, paying the "Mercury" subscription and I am very pleased. A lot of my friends ask why, considering the lines are like 10 minutes or so most of the time.
Well, I'm impatient, and I know that I get more than my $6 a month worth of service/bandwidth out of em. I highly recommend it, and I see little difference in it and FilePlanet, though a few exclusives are thrown around amongst them.
For example, FilePlanet got C&C Generals early, and Mercury got Counterstrike 1.6 beta. Interesting stuff, but generally for demos and trailers and patches, you can't beat the fee considering the unlimited bandwidth/downloads such a service provides. -
Doom III and BitTorrent
I know this is off-topic somewhat, but I wonder if the guys at id would consider using BitTorrent to distribute the official downloadable Doom III Shareware when it comes out. That would be much better than offering it by mere FTP. (FTP sites seem to just jam up when big games like that come out, and FileShack is going to have long waits, at least for freeloaders.) BitTorrent is cool.
(I'm assuming of course that they do come out with a shareware version. As popular as the guys at id are, they could probably skip it, and they know it. Like most gamers, I will buy the game anyway, right after I buy a new 4 GHz Pentium 5. Heh. But if I have a shareware version to run on my old computer, I might decide that I can put up with the low framerate for a while, and buy the full game before I buy a new computer. So they get their money sooner. -- On the other hand, I might decide the framerate is too low, and then I have to wait until I buy a new computer. But at least I'll know.)
So, guys at id, are you listening? How 'bout it?

Released on April Fools...
And I tried to submit it:
2003-04-01 17:32:14 Duke Nukem 3D Source Released (no kidding) (articles, games) (rejected)
Either way, I'm glad its featured here to the /. community. I can't wait to see what wild crazy network/opengl implementation this thing will get.
You can download it from 3D Gamers or Fileshack, since I'm sure that 3D Realms will be quickly hosed. It was hosed on April 1st, and that was without the help of a good slashdotting.
The readme states it will run over a network (but without sound), and the soundcode is basically crap.
From what I understand, it will take some major reworking to get it running in Windows 2000/XP. -
Are you willing to pay?
For a long time, people just have not been willing to pay for stuff online. I mean, look at something like Fileshack. A long time ago fileshack was a little weakling but you could get files for free and fast. Well, such a service would have killed shacknews, so they launched Mercury. All the downloads you want, very fast, and tons of cool extras. A lot of people whined about paying for such a service, when you can still find the files if you look for free and sometimes just as fast. However, it seems to be catching on.
This company mentioned in the article is just going to have to keep customer service in mind. I think when a website moves from a free nature to a pay for perks, a lot of webmasters or teams don't understand what customer service is about. This is a really stupid and shameless plug, but fileshack mercury now allows you to do referals and if you refer someone, you get free service! I mean, how cool is that? This game company I hope will do something similar. Btw, if you want to sign up for fileshack, use this link. Really its quite nice and worth the few bucks, especially considering the Doom3 demo is lurking in the near future. -

I love programs like this
I really like programs like this that allow people to support those that need it. This takes place in all forms of life, from those who help out the homeless, to helping out with FSF, to giving time to the EFF!
Hell, you can even help friends get mercury fileshack service these days. They just added a referal system. Shameless plug for mercury / fileshack (demos, patches, movies, clips, and a whole lot of fun etc. -- fast and cheap. Still available for free, but pay a few bucks for no lines and faster downloads. Hell, you even get 10 megs of webspace and speakeasy doesn't care if you put nekked chicks up!

I'm guessing there are many other places also to download it from. But if you are willing to wait in line for it at fileshack, its another option. -
Re:It's already here
Seriously, anyone who bitches about these sorts of restrictive policies should put their money where their mouth is and switch to a provider like Speakeasy . Not only are they geek friendly when it comes to multiple machines, but they also have a lot of other good projects including the following:
- RPMFind mirror. I hear some people here are into Linux?
;) - Fileshack
- Hotzone
- A whole lot of stuff through Kontent.net
- Shell Accounts
Not to mention the fact that they offer at least some Linux support (examples here and here). I don't know the extent of it, because honesty I don't ask my ISP for help with my OSs often. Also, when I got DSL they offered static IPs when most of the other providers I looked at in my area only seemed to offer dynamic for residential customers.
You might be asking yourself, "Does this guy work for Speakeasy?" No. But I am a satisfied customer, and I am afraid that good ISPs like this one will be pushed out by bigger companies (*cough*Verizon*cough*) who offer their customers a much more restricted set of options and don't give back to the interenet community (if you beleive in such a thing). All this because these other companies can offer their servies a few bucks cheaper a month or with a little better initial perks, or just because the other companies have better name recognition and more marketing dollars. That and there are many savvy users at these less friendly ISPs who know they can slip by restrictions (at least in the short term), so they opt for convenience and saving a few bucks over promoting the behavior they'd like to see and options all users can take advantage of.
So, if you're concerned by the increasing restrictiveness of ISPs, use your wallet to make a statment by switching to one of the good guys.

While on the subject of real-time filters...The trend in game engines is, as it has been in the past, largely towards better image quality. The stippling technique described in the article is a tradeoff for those who'd rather have the medical equivalent of "better framerates."
That said, you CAN have sketchy-looking Quake if you want with NPRQuake. I've tried this and it looks incredible- it's a shame no commercial games have used this technique yet. Reminds me of that 80s music video where the gal walks into the mirror, and everything's all "pencilly-looking" but in real-time... now what was that damn song? (racks brain)
Also check out Waking Life. It's available on P2P as I write this, but you didn't hear that from me, and you're better off renting the DVD for all the extra goodies. It's not as pretentious as many make it out to be, and the visuals alone are worth it.
