It's Already Happening
how long before these phrases start having cameo appearances in XB360/Wii/PC games?

Re:-1, Troll
Billy Berghammer founded http://www.planetgamecube.com/ - he loves Nintendo, he's merely voicing his grievances about things that he feels Nintendo has done wrong over the years.
The online link came too late in the product cycle and even Nintendo themselves hardly used the GBA connectivity (which I was also very excited about before it came out and was disappointed with how it was used). Nintendo needed to pioneer these unique things in order to get developers thinking about *they* could adopt them.
The system *is* underpowered compared to the other next-gen machines - but we were expecting the console and controllers to be cheaper to make up for this... And bundling a game that I don't particularly want doesn't really make up for that.
I've imported all Nintendo's consoles since the SNES on the day of launch so I'm a big fan - I'm just not as excited as I was before the price announcement.

Hmm...
I seem to recall Molyneux being one of the first to PRAISE the Wii controller, though, as seen here: http://www.planetgamecube.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=1

Seems rather strange that he'd do a 180. Maybe it's the money-hat effect. -
Guesstimates?
Nintendo themselves has said they've passed 21 million.
Source - this is off PR Newswire, so it's a regular press release.
Not to mention the idea of posting this article without a reliable news source. Blogging a quarterly shareholder meeting is one thing, but when Nintendo has released press releases with the same information, why bother falling back on a pretty-much no-name blog? And if you don't think PGC is "reliable", then pick one more to your liking. Preferably one without a stupid animated GIF in it. -
Re:Wii for handicapped gamers?
There's always the classic controller and if all else fails, I remember reading that there will be inputs for gamecube controllers on the side somewhere. So don't give up on the Wii yet!

Hudson Promises 100 Virtual Console Games
Hudson is behind the TurboGrafx-16. So take this as a good sign for Nintendo's Virtual Console. They also have plans for a return to the console market with several games for the Wii.

Re:As opposed to shippedThe word used in the press release was "sold," but it's definitely possible that they are only referring to shipped units, despite quoting the number sold. Then again, would they lie?
Okay, maybe. Can we just assume that they aren't lying, though? Please? *frowny*

Re:Interesting that you say that...
That would depend on what you define as "not a mistake". If you stick to a specific idea/design and it doesn't work anywhere near what you'd hoped, it's a mistake or mis-step, no matter how you cut it. That IS what happened with the Game Cube. Just because they're the oldest player remaining in the market doesn't make them infallible or all-knowing. They're third place right now. Some of that is due to Microsoft being in the playground- but some of it was the insistance of some of the decisions they made.
They chose to release a system with no DVD capabilities, ostensibly to prevent piracy.
Seems like they failed on that regard... This means that at the time that PS2's and X-Boxen were selling, they could be used as dual boxes, a DVD player and a console. For many, it was a decision already made- they didn't want to shell out nearly half again or more for a DVD player AND a console. Game Cube need not apply as they play those mini-discs only.
They chose to release games that largely felt like kiddie/family values type games. Nothing wrong with that, but Sony had no compunctions on that regard. The dazzling array of titles for the Playstation 2 versus GC isn't because Sony's cheaper on royalties, they're much more reasonable with the requirements/testing for their stamp of approval, or that the PS2 is technically superior. It's because they started out with a larger array of titles that appealed to the crowd that are buying consoles- and it's not all parents buying the things for kids these days. This translated into MUCH more consoles sold for the PS2 than the GC at the start- which then causes a network effect that is rather difficult to break once it gets fully under way.
Those are mis-steps, no matter how you slice it. In the business world, sticking with what works in the past will only get you so far. Nintendo tried to push it a little farther than they probably ought to and ended up dead last after it was all said and done. -
Re:Two Words.... Light Saber
"We're all going to look like "The Star Wars Kid" in our living rooms."
That said, I was shocked when I first saw it. I thought it was a DVD remote. We'll see how well they execute this. -
Re:Dear Lord...where to begin.
"Who knew so many were too lazy to raise real pets?"
"My sentiments exactly."
Uh huh. Betcha anything that most of the 250,000 people that purchased Nintendogs already have pets.
I have to be honest, I'm really sick of your assumptions about why people are buying that game. I don't know why you think the game is a good substitute for a real animal. I also don't know why you think this is somehow an alternative. FIf you don't mind my being brutally honest here, you sound just as idiotic as that group that's against Rockstar's Bully. Loud claims with nothing substantiative to back them up.
The worst part is, as I've tried to point out to you before, Nintendo is working to promote responsible treatment of dogs..
You'll pardon me for thinking you need to STFU. -

Re:The two things I want
There have been rumours of a Nintendo sanctioned PDA style organizer being released for the DS.
So far, the only thing we have is a name: "Organizer Plus"
http://www.planetgamecube.com/games.cfm?action=pro file&id=2240
I don't know much about Summitsoft, but from their site it seems they make a bunch of Pocket PC apps. -
Re:Remember: He only needs to delay your decision
The DS was rushed so the devs didn't have enough time to finish most of their games yet which is why you see only the cheap gimmick titles so far. There's a huge list of upcoming releases for the system here. Another one here, which includes titles that weren't announced for the US yet. I'm not informed on the PSP side of things because that thing isn't out here yet.
-
Re:The market isn't ready yet.
They are still undecided though releasing them for free is an option they're thinking about.

Re:Hmmm...
(Or, maybe the "Revolution" will be that Nintendo decides that online gaming is a pretty good idea, what with Microsoft and that whole "Live" thing. ^_^)
Nintendo has already publicly announced that the Revolution will utilize internet gameplay via built-in wi-fi. So whatever the gimmick on the Revolution is, it's something else. -
Re:Not the wrong games. The wrong girls.
There's this article which suggests that girls play any game but the role and mindset society has pressed upon them makes them reject most of the standard games. Since they have little experience with these games they'll also have very little chance to win so they prefer unconventional games where seasoned gamers have no advantage from their experience.

DS can do movies and music too.
You need a $40 3rd party cartridge, but you can play divx movies, mp3s and read text on the GBA and DS off a flash card. It's an import called Movie Advance There is a good review on Lik Sang but that site seems to be having troubles so here is a Google cache. Another review is at PlanetGC. The good thing about this is that it isn't controlled by Sony like their fucking UMD that no one else can use. Anyone with a flash card reader can use the DS for movies. The downside is that it's another item to carry with you which is bad for those without big pockets or bags. Given that the old GBA roms are a known format, I'm guessing that there will be a lot more third party apps for the DS than with the PSP. Particularly when someone figures out how to get the DS to play games over WiFi without a physical disk. This is a known feature of the DS, but it's not a public spec yet.

Re:Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green
I have three kids... they each had to have their own Pokemon Fire Red/Leaf Green game. They use the wireless adapter on a daily basis for trades and for a couple of mini-games. This adds a whole new dimension to their enjoyment of the game. I've tried out the wireless adapter myself, works great even through walls; you don't even need to be in the same room (that could make being sent to your room fun).
The specs for the Freescale wireless chipsets say that the range is 10 meters indoors and 20 meters outdoors, though Nintendo recommends no more than 10 feet (3 meters). Plus it's supposed to be able to communicate with special base stations connected to the internet at certain locations (in Japan only) for long-distance play.
This makes me think that the DS is going to be similar to this, except maybe a pumped up version. I don't see that its feasible for it to work at great distances, though. Mainly in high density areas like Tokyo/New York? -
Re:Any reliable battery life figures?
From the fact sheet:
Battery: Lithium ion battery delivering six to 10 hours of play on a four-hour charge, depending on use; power-saving sleep mode; AC adapter -
DS guaranteed winner
The DS is a guaranteed winner. In the very best situation it rocks, has a lot of games that rock and everything is awesome. At the very worst it ends up like virtual boy, and you get to be the cool kid on the block who has a virtual boy.
Remember back in the day gameboy vs. game gear? Even Nintendo admits openly the game gear was superior technically. But gameboy won because it had Tetris. It had portable games. The PSP is going to have console games. Taking PlayStation games and making them portable will fail for the same reason that taking PC games and putting them on console systems fails so miserably. Just because you can take a game with you in the car doesn't make it a portable game in the same way that playing Quake 2 on the N64 doesn't make Quake 2 a console game. You get it? Nintendo is the only company that seems to understand this. Look at advance wars, that's a portable game. It wouldn't work any other way. But it looks like Sony is just going to try to miniaturize the playstation, and it wont work for the same reason the game gear didn't work.
Nintendo knows this. Nintendo is making portable games. Sony is making a really small console.
You can read it here, straight from the horses mouth. -
Re:Giving Sony Competition
Controllers are meant to be held, not looked at. The N64 controller fit my hands perfectly and IMO was the most comfortable controller around before the GCN came out. And I suspect I wasn't the only one with this opinion, considering for how long the N64 controller was the iconic symbol of the games section here on
/. for quite a while.I played a good amount of N64 back in college (Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Killer Instinct 64), and the controllers really cramped my hands after half an hour of play. It was especially bad on fighters like KI. It was only slightly better on MK or 007. As well, I don't find the GC controller all that comfortable either, though it is quite a bit easier to hold than the N64. No, give me an XBox Controller S, and I can play for hours with no cramping at all. That's not something I can do with a GC, PS2, or N64 controller (the DC controller was better than those, too, though not better than the XBox).
Avoiding the "DVD" moniker also means avoiding obnoxious licensing fees to our good friends at the DVD Consortium. You'd think with all the pro-DeCSS voices here on
/. there'd be more praise for a major media company that has boycotted the CSS heierarchy in entirety.Sure the lack of licensing keeps the price point lower, but other than that I don't care. I couldn't care less about DeCSS, the "injustice" of the regions system, or other political bullcrap Slashdotters think everybody should care about. Maybe that's just me, though.
It's the games, stupid! If you want bells and whistles over gameplay and fun, go back to PC gaming.
Yes, bells and whistles don't make a good game, but as I implied in other posts, given the choice between "Game with good gameplay and average looks on GC" and "Game with good gameplay, bells and whistles, and perhaps some extras like online play or custom soundtracks or downloadable content on the XBox", I'm going to go with "bells and whistles" every time.
Of what use is better picture and sound when you can't play Metroid Prime or Wind Waker on it?
What use is a beautiful game like Metroid Prime (just about compares graphically to XBox launch titles) when you can't control it worth a shit? I blame Zoid for that, though.
How about horrendous battery lives for handhelds with such built-in lighting until the pricepoint on better technology came down?
Considering long the GBA ran off of two AA batteries, I don't see why they couldn't have just put in two more batteries and a backlight, and not lost much play time at all. Besides, if you put a switch on it to turn off the light, you can play for 20 hours with no light, and I can play for 5 with a light, and we'll both be happy. I may replace my batteries more often than you, but that doesn't bother me. Nintendo didn't give us that option, though. If you wanted a backlight, you had to buy a whole new GBA. Was that "about the game, stupid," or was it "about the money, stupid?"
I'm probably in a minority opinion here, but I don't think the Virtual Boy would have had the fate it did if Mario Clash was the Super Mario World-style platformer it was originally intended to be. The 3D Mario Bros. gameplay was alright and Wario World was good and all, but...
I never spent much time playing a VirtualBoy, so I can't tell you whether or not the games were good. However, that's a moot point. The thing burned out your eyes! Seriously, what genius thought it was a good idea to have a monochrome red stereo display only inches away from your eyes? I hope he has images of koopas burned into his retinas for that.

How the fuck do mods rate you up?
As you can clearly see from this image that's been on PlanetGamecube since this morning, it's a power button! Why do mods reward people who can't be bothered to look at the zoomed version of pictures? It's not hard!
What is hard is to RTFA and actually make an insightful comment, or draw attention to something not covered by the subject material. The parent post does not do this! -

Ads for nerds. Stuff that sucks.Wow, does anybody actually go to the ilovebees.com link at Slashdot? In about 10 seconds you can tell that this is a marketing ploy. Fucking flash animation pops up and starts talking about "SYSTEM PERIL DISTRIBUTED REFLEX" and gives a fucking countdown. Jesus Christ on a Stick, do you honestly think that ANY webmaster wouldn't have pulled their fucking site from the 'net if something like that happened?
IT'S FUCKING FLASH ANIMATION. Free advertising by starting an astroturf campaign to "figure out what went wrong". Here's a hint of what went wrong - Slashdot no longer reads its submissions with a critital eye.
It's as bad as Acclaim's pigeons, their "Name your kid Turok" marketing shit, and who can forget their tombstone advertisements?
It's time to wake up, Slashdot, and not get duped by these obvious ploys for free advertisement.

Re:Killer 7mmm...all i could find on there was this bit dated 6th of Jan 04. I couldnt see any new E3 coverage.
This game is taking an age to be released. Every preview I have seen so far about this game has been a bit vague about how the actual game will play. The trailer looks cool, but it would have been nice to see some hands on stuff.
Was hoping E3 would have delivered it, but alas

Planet Gamecube had a little bit on it. It's apparently about an assassin with multiple personalities, each of which has different abilities.

Nintendo DS logo revealed?
I apologize for being off-topic, but it's at least semi-relevent in the sense that this is sorta about E3. Somebody got a photo of the Nintendo DS logo.
http://www.planetgamecube.com/news.cfm?action=item &id=5289
The picture's kinda blurry (heh, camera phone?) but it appears to depict two screens, one above the other. Looks like a GBA SP with the lower half being a screen. Not the most exciting photo ever, but a lot of us are itching to see what Nintendo's going to show us tomorrow, figured I'd post it. (No hard feelings if I'm modded down, though...)

This doesn't answer the question, but the Wireless Adaptor is being packaged with the next lot of Pokemon games. Going back to the kiosks, this article explains it better.

Re:Old-school deck to play NES and SNES games?
Planet GameCube has a bit about how they're re-releasing a mess of old NES games for the Game Boy Advance, as well as producing a new GBA/SP with a color scheme with the old color scheme. It sucks from my point of view, since I spent a lot of time in used game stores and pawn shops this Christmas looking for an old NES for my wife. She loves Super Mario and Dr. Mario.
-
Re:Check the post...talk about vague
A Nintendo press release sheds a little more light on the matters , at least if we can trust Nintendo's figures. They claim that they actually sold more Gamecubes than Sony sold PS2s on thanksgiving week. It seems that they sold "only" 600K Gameboy, so either the GBA is selling way less than most of us think, or the Gamecube sales were truly terrific.
So, if we use the numbers we've got and use some imagination, we can get some better results. Since know that Nintendo sold about 250K GCN in October, we could extrapolate that to about 65K a week. If they kept similar sales numbers for the first three weeks of November, that's about 750K in the entire month: not that far behind from PS2 sales, and far better than what MS is doing.( About 75K more units a month than the GCN before the price cut, I think)
