Batman Begins Trailer Online
meltoast writes "The trailer for the Batman Begins is available on the Warner Brothers website. Also check out the pictures of the new Batmobile on the same site. All I can say is holy big tires, Batman!" The Batmobile design is reminiscent of the one from Dark Knight Returns, but I think I prefer it over the one Adam West used to cruise around in.
....that it is a 'teaser' not a 'trailer' considering they show absolutely nothing but that 'it's coming' in a year...
I'm a little behind on my batman lore. What's with the monster truck batmobile in the pictures section?

At least it appears to have real Actors in the Cast. Can never be disappointed by Morgon Freeman, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, or Gary Oldman.

At least from what little I could see on the trailer they are returning the movies back to the Dark Crusader model.
The first two movies with Micheal Keaton were pretty good, but Val Kilmer and George Clooney pretty much killed off any interest I had in the movie franchise.

I think it's a neat variation. It's better than the all-too-flashy neon light decorated batmobile in the last movie. That seemed more like a showcar than a "fight the bad guys" vehicle. The Batmobile from the first movie was a well-done machine.
I don't see the justification in jet engines though for the previous vehicles. But with all the torque you would need on the big tires on the new one, perhaps the engine is justified.

I would think, with the Batman franchise continuing on into an eco-crazy millenium, Batman wouldn't convert the Batmobile into an dually-wheeled SUV! How about at least a Bat-hybrid?!
But then again, what do I know -- he's got a fire-breathing mega-engine on the back of that... and that's DEFINITELY not environmentally friendly.

I belive Gotham City is the comic book version of New York City. In fact NYC used to be called Gotham. On a side note, I believe comic book Metropolis was based on Chicago.

Okay, I'm officially much more excited about this movie next summer than Revenge of the Sith. It looks like they're going back to what works for Batman; George long ago lost sight of what was good in Star Wars.
Interesting to notice that there isn't a prominently featured love interest anywhere in the photos on the website. This is great to see: romantic subplots really don't jive with the whole disturbed-anarchist-hell-bent-on-vengance thing.

With the incredible job that has been done with Spiderman and X-Men, why do they have to beat batman to death? The first two were ok, dark, brooding, just like the comics. Then they decided to follow the campy television series.
They have pretty much killed batman already IMO. The studios have the right idea with the Marvel franchise - but it seems that Dollar Comics produces worse movies. I wonder why that is?

That's just crazy talk. I really don't like this new Batmobile at all -- I just don't get the whole "bigger = better" aesthetics that seem to dominate car design these days (American design, at least, though everyone is in on the SUV game now).
Oh well, at least Bruce Wayne won't mind if gas prices go up, unlike all the fools who complain after buying gas guzzlers.

I saw pictures of the 'new' batmobile about a year ago and it looks like a sporty version of a farmer's tractor.
I've always been severely let down by the Batman movies. Each one seems to claim that it's true to the darkness of the original 'The Batman' story, but they never are.
There's so much potential in a Batman movie as he's the only 'superhero' who actually isn't.
He's merely a vigilante with the cash to develop some seriously cool anti-crime gadgets.

This is the first I have heard of the movie. Batman is a great character and many people who love to complain about the batman movies, completely forget about the first. It was actually very good. The second movie was saved by the fantastic cast. 3 and 4 were just kid movies not meant to be anything more.
The trailer indicates that they are going back to when Bruce Wane first decided to become Batman. It also looks like this one will have a more serous tone than even the first. I suspect their won't even be any real "bad guy".
This appears to be very different from any previous Batman movie to date. I don't think anybody should be quick to judge this one based on some of it predecessors.

I think the problem with Batman is that the producers and such try to re-make it into something that reflects themselves.
This is great for Batman when your name is Tim Burton. Not so good when it's not.
Just watching the teaser and looking at the pix gives me a bad feeling for this movie. But I'll wait until it comes out. It will be interesting to see how they work Scarecrow. I think they'll have to tone him down too much.
And then there's the fact that Schumacher is nowhere to be seen, and those behind it seem quite competent. One was cowriter for Dark City, whose setting I thought would have made a better Gotham than even Burton's. My hopes are pretty high for this movie.

To everyone complaining about how bad Catwoman is, its not the DC character Catwoman! The woman played by Halle Berry is not named Selena Kyle, she does not live in Gotham City, and she has never even met this burce wayne/batman guy. It was just some shitty movie WB made that happened to be called Catwoman, now quit bitching about it.

Finally a Batman with some hope of being good and true to the character. Batman is pissed and should be pissed. I for one am pretty excited about the film and it seems to be very well cast.
They filmed some scenes for Batman Begins last week in one of the north suburbs of Chicago -- scenes involving the Batmobile.
Next week, they begin filming more scenes from the movie in my building !
According to the notice we got from the landlord, they're going to do some inside scenes, and some stunts involving helicopters.

I'm glad to see they are doing a serious-er Batman. I never liked the original Keaton/Nicholson Batman series that start this more recent bunch of movies. I always thought Nicholson played the Joker as too much of a buffoon. My vision of the Joker was Alan Moore's, from the killing joke, where his pregnant wife died in a testing a Baby Bottle heater, he rapes Barbara Gorden /Batgirl then shoots her in the spine, and leaves her paralyzed, and then makes a throne of dead babies. Plus he's acting really, really gay the whole time. That's the joker!
And of course the Dark Knight returns with an 65 year old Batman beating the shit out of an evil Superman.

Most batman villians could have enough story and depth to have a movie on there own.
Hell, I think it would be cool if the begining of each movies dealt with the origins of the villian.

Actually, that's derived from a column written by Larry Niven decades ago. Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex.
It's full of other insightful scientific inferences. For example, if Superman can fly, then his sperm probably can too!
Jet engines are high torque at high rpm, and very low shaft torque as they spool up, compared to reciprocating engines that make peak shaft torque about halfway through their rpm range (for a normal automobile engine). All the output torque in a turbine driven vehicle comes from a big heavy (in relation to the turbine itself) reduction gear box. They don't have a power curve like a reciprocating engine where you can step on the gas and get good acceleration right from the start.
A good example is the helocopter turbines that they are building motorcycles with (Jay Leno has one). Those bikes start slow, and have pretty constant gentle acceleration, they just keep going faster and Faster and FASTER as engine rpm builds.
Turbines are excellent in constant speed applications, but to have response and driveability in something like a car it takes a pretty complicated transmission. M1 Abrahms tanks use a continously-variable Allison X-1100-3B hydrokinetic transmission, which is a very complicated fluid-drive unit that uses the turbine to drive a variable-displacement hydraulic pump...the turbine runs at pretty constant rpm on low fuel at low demand (just enough to power itself), but as demand increases, the pump moves more fluid and the engine is fed more fuel. That hydraulic fluid then goes to hydraulic motors that are used to actually power the tracks....when the driver steps on the gas, the engine rpm does not vary a whole lot, but the fluid flow increases to the drive motors.
The biggest reason to use a turbine instead of a reciprocating engine in an application like a ship or a tank is that turbines will produce the same (after gearing) power in a smaller physical package.
The one place where turbines may possibly become practical in a car is in hybrids....the wheel motors are driven off of battery voltage, and the turbine turns the alternator to recharge.

Batman is in something like 12 different books a month. Batman is a hot commodity. Has been for a great many years, probably will be for a great many more.

It's almost like Superman is who people would like to be, but deep down, they know they're more like Batman.
There is a lot of untapped potential in Batman for the sdreen. INHO the key is to treat each movie as a 'first' in Hollywood terms. In holly wood a sequel is considered successful if it makes 75% of the preceding movie. So the just try to ride the coat tails of the previous success. Obvioulsy this model fails for any long term franchise options.
Comics to movies seems like it would be easy, but you need an exact vision to cut out the stuff that doesn't shift mediums well, and add stuff that works well on screen and does not take away from the original concepts and world.

The reason DC is involved with it is because the producers got the rights to the "Catwoman" name from them. Apparently, that didn't mean they had to follow the continuity of the character.
I know that on two other occasions, DC gave permission to use names of their characters to other movies. (I can't find an online reference for the second movie, though I remember seeing the acknowledgment in the credits.)

In the pre- Kindom Come mythos, Bruce Wayne and Selena Kyle did have a daughter, Helena Kyle, AKA Huntress. This was the basis for a show on the WB 2 years ago, Birds of Prey. It was pretty good, but they banked on it being a hit like smallville and canned it after only one season.

Seriously, this is not right. I mean, that outfit looks way too much like what he wore in Episode 1, as if I need those memories to come back...
I hope this sequel will have the same awesome set design that has been with the series since Tim Burton. Although the later movies lacked some of the far-out Burton style their set desing has always been really good at making you feel as though you were actully watching a comic book. None of the other recent comic book adaptations have taken it nearly as far as Batman has with the dark yet beautifully desgned Goham city sets.

My understanding of the new Batmobile was that it looks that way for a reason. I picked up on a message board that the design is for some special purpose, and will make sense in the context of the film. I guess we'll have to wait a year to find out.

I'm really disappointed. I've been waiting and waiting for Batman: Year One directed by Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream). If there was anything he'd be able to bring to the film, it would be darkness and originality. Unfortunately the WB didn't like it very much.

Historically, the Batman movies have gone from great to shit...
The first "Batman" movie was excellent. Keaton pulled off Batman and Bruce Wayne believably, although Jack Nicholson stole the show (when does he not steal the show?). The second movie was meh... ok... and "Batman Forever" was stupidly named, Val Kilmer was a poor choice, and Jim Carey made the riddler look like a freakshow, not a twisted plotting villian. We can all thank Joel Schumacher and his egotisitcal directing style (and someone who has never obviously read good comic books) for the POS movie "Batman & Robin". It was a hunk of crap. Wtg Joel... you are a master of shit, and that movie proved it. I am ashamed that in my need to collect DVDs of comic book movies that I must buy your hunk of garbage... Fuck you Joel.
On a lighter note, this trailer for "Batman Begins" looks dark like it should. Christain Bale is fantastic actor (if you haven't, rent American Psycho... sinister movie and brilliant) and he'll pull off the conflicted nature of Batman well.
Remember, don't judge a movie before you watch it... you might just miss a good flick! I for one will wait until it comes out in theatres and judge it for myself.

That was cool. It was eerie too, cuz a lot of the flashes of scenes made me think specifically of several of the really good batman "zero hour" and "how batman became batman" comics that got me back into the dark knight series.
The kid falling into the cave, seeing something in the dark (which, if I remember correctly, should be a honking huge ass albino female bat), the traveling the world bit (young bruce wayne spent a lot of time becoming a man of the world, searching for martial arts teachers to hone his skills as a first rate unarmed warrior).
The series also spent a lot of time looking deeply into the dark waters of bruce wayne's psyche and detailing his madness (yes, kids, batman is insane. He's a vigilante killer who is driven by the images seeing his parents murdered. His only redeeming factor is that he struggles on a daily basis to fight the darkness within his fractured psyche to be a good person and benificial to society as his daylight persona, aka bruce wayne, philanthropist billionaire).
This should actually be good, just because it has a great (ever seen Equilibrium) physical stunt fight actor, Christian Bale.

Joe Piscipo's son was a friend of mine in middle school. For his birthday one year his father rented the damn thing and brought it to school. Several of us got to sit in the thing, which at 13 was awesome... So I've kind of got a soft spot for that old thing.

David Goyer wrote this. He's the guy behind all three Blade movies. In fact, he directed Blade Trinity due out this December. He's not British.
For the record, the screenplay is out on the net, I've read it, and I'm concerned. The movie isn't necessarily a restart of the storyline of the previous movies. It's a prequel that tells the story of how Batman became Batman. It starts with Bruce in a prison encountering ninja cult leader Ra's Al Ghul, and the story goes from there.
Personally, I wasn't very impressed with the story. I was hoping for something involving the Joker, more along the lines of the Batman short film that debuted at Comic-Con last year (the one with the two surprise villains at the end...). At the least, I was hoping for a very disturbing story involving the Scarecrow. He makes a brief appearance and nothing more.
I don't know, there just wasn't anything about the screenplay that grabbed me. Even Kevin Smith's campy Superman Lives screenplay was clever enough to keep me reading.
And the new Batmobile just leaves me befuddled. I think Tim Burton's gothic sleek urban-missile design was perfect. This looks like a giant four-wheeling dune buggy that I'm finding difficulty relating to Batman at all, or figuring out the usefulness of in a massive city. Is this thing gonna hop over cars on the freeway or something?

Actually, you're only looking at the recent movies.
Go back further, and you'll find that the first full-length batman movie was campy and silly, and had none of that "dark" bullshit associated with it.

Two other things turbines have over pistons:
1) Fuel efficiancy at high torque: when a turbine is running in its happy place, it gets very, very good fuel efficiancy. If you have something that needs to put out a lot of force, and it needs to sip fuel, a turbine and a CVT work great. If you have something that can run at the same shaft speed for a long time (like a ship or an aircraft) you can delete the CVT and gear accordingly
2) Multi-fuel capability: a turbine's fuel system is very simple, and the fuel doesn't need to do much more than burn. Assuming it is properly filtered and doesn't have any real strange properties, a turbine can run on almost anything - like recovered vegetable oil. Diesels can do the same thing, just not as well.
When the Abrams was designed, there was a lot of worry about fuel logistics in Europe during WW3, and so most tanks of that era can run on a variety of fuels - in case fuel had to be scrounged.
What turbines DON'T do well is idle - fuel consumption at idle is almost as high as fuel consumption at full power. For a turbine-powered tank in "hurry up and wait" mode (as it usually is - especially in the defensive) this can burn a lot of fuel, as the engine is run to provide power for the radios, turret traverse, on-board computers, crew A/C, the boiler vessel (gotta have coffee) etc.
There was a plan to equip the Abrams with some sort of APU for use when idling, but I don't know if that ever got implemented.

It surprises me that there aren't many comments in my +4 threshold from those who have been closely (or...obsessively) following this film. A lot of the pessimistic comments users have posted reflect concerns about things that are already known to be untrue (for example, the suit is not stiff, inflexible rubber like in the past four films).
Here's my sincere attempt to provide some better information to this thread.
This *teaser* trailer is primarily intended to give the mainstream audience a heads-up that this film is coming (next summer), and that it's going to be not only nothing like any Batman film that's been made before, but that it's not even going to feel like a comic book movie.
Christopher Nolan (cowriter and Director of "Memento" and "Insomnia") is the helmer of this film. In a remarkable move, WB gave him carte blanche control of the film and has been adamant about not getting in his way (a remarkable feat for WB). The script is co-written by Nolan and David Goyer. Goyer has written for Batman comics in the past, and is as familiar with DC comics as any obsessed fan.
The script harkens to Frank Miller's "Year One" comic, as well as some aspects of "Dark Knight Returns." But the story told in this film is highly original and inspired, and actually tells a story that even the comics have never really told: It's the story of how Bruce Wayne trained himself to become the Batman, how he travelled the world, learning from every martial arts master he could, etc. It's the story of his constant struggle avenge the murder of his parents.
The "villains" of the film are Ra's Al Ghul (one of Batman's "ultimate" enemies...google him if you don't know who he is) and the Scarecrow. But rest assured, these villains play critical and organic roles in the film. They're not here because WB
"every Batman film since Batman Returns has two villains in it"...it's just coincidence.
The cast is a filled with REAL actors who were all hand-picked by Nolan (as opposed to by WB). Nolan's got a good reputation for having a strong eye for casting. Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred, Morgan Freeman as Lucious Fox (head of Wayne Enterprises), Liam Neeson as Ducard (a central character who I will bite my tongue and say nothing further of), and Ken Watanabe as Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe was Katsumoto in "The Last Samurai," his first English-speaking role, and one which earned him an Oscar nomination). Rounding out the cast, Gary Oldman is Lieutenant James Gordon (who has a central role, unlike the previous four films), Cillian Murphy as Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA the Scarecrow (Murphy is best known for his role in "28 Days Later"), Katie Holmes as Assistant DA Rachel (I forget the character's last name).
All in all, a solid cast of solid actors. No George Clooneys or Arnold Schwarzaneggers in here.
Those who are fans of the music and cinematography of Nolan's previous entries ("Memento" and "Insomnia") will be happy to know that Nolan brought with him his core crew members from those films, composer David Julyan, and director of photography Wally Pfister. The look of the film, as glimpsed in the teaser trailer, is, much like "Insomnia," raw and bleak. Nolan, a naturalistic director, is not a fan of CGI effects, so don't expect much of that.
Nolan's focus is on realism. This film is going to be highly grounded in realism, so much so that it will not at all feel like a comic book movie. Which makes sense: Batman is "cool" in large part because it's not a far stretch to imagine him existing in a real world. Nolan's film will bring that point home.
The film is largely about the psychodrama of Bruce Wayne. In fact, don't expect to see much of Batman in the film until late in the game. This isn't an action-oriented movie. And unlike the four films preceding it (which, obviously, are not in continuity with this film), Bruce/Batman is the center of the film, not the villains.

Warner Bros. has their arms wrapped around DC's necks via contract rights. DC did not want what happened to Catwoman to happen. They did not like the direction the last two Batmans took either. Think a little next time.

The parent of my post said that the movie had nothing to do with the comic character, in fact the parent states outright that it's a movie that just HAPPENS to be called Catwoman, as if by pure coincidence. My point (along with others) was that the movie obviously does have something to do with the DC Comics character Catwoman (i.e. is a movie adaptation of the character) as shown by the DC Logo on the official site. I said nothing more, and nothing less. I didn't say anythign about good/bad/ugly, creative control, past movies, etc.
Way to utterly miss the point man.
Besides, DC has no contract with Warner Bros. as you state. You are completely wrong, man. Warner Bros. literally OWNS DC. Let me repeat that. Warner Brothers owns DC Comics. DC has little if any control over what happens with/in/to movies using their comic book characters, because the movie studio OWNS those characters!

As for the new Batmobile, what the hell were they thinking? That doesn't look cool, it looks unfinished. It looks mismatched. And frankly, it looks like something my uncle Charlie put together out of the parts of his various demolished and blown up monster trucks after drinking all his Cow Palace Dirt Derby winnings. Fortunately for the kids, it never ran. But if a lightning storm had come up before the sheriff drug him away, it might have lived. Oh yes, it might have lived.....
