Google+ Already At 10 Million Users
An anonymous reader writes "I project that Google will easily pass 10 million users tomorrow and could reach 20 million user by this coming weekend if they keep the Invite Button available. As one G+ user put it, it is easy to underestimate the power of exponential growth." I bet if people post in the discussion that they need invites, we can scratch each other's backs here. I've been using Google+ for a few days now (Yes I will put you in a circle ;) and have a lot to love, but unless I can gate twitter and Facebook, the best interface in the world won't help me until I can convince my kids' grandparents to move.
But I value my privacy.
Would it be crass of us to rent a dingy motel, buy some horribly depressing cheap decorations, and invite Tom from Myspace and Zuckerberg from Facebook to their very own pity party?
Don't use your slashdot journal? Philistine!
Also, not getting your kid's grandparents to use it at this time can be considered a feature. Let the early adopters work out the kinks first, otherwise when they try to move from failbook they'll just move right back.
It's like going from hotmail to gmail back when it launched.
It's sleek, doesn't get in the way, lets you do things easily. You manage your "friends" easily.
Hell, it's one service I wouldn't have any issue adding my boss and co-workers to, unlike facebook.
As a bonus, I don't get people posting asinine idiocies on my wall. Sure they can get me to eyeball their crap by mentionning me in their posts, but at least it won't bother everyone else who reads the things I write.
A negative side, not for me but for others, would be the lack of games, but we'll see...
One shall speak only if what one has to say is more beautiful than silence
I have no idea what "gate twitter" means, but you can publish your microblog on a different service that supports RSS, and "the my kids grandparents" (whatever that means) will be able to follow you with any feed reader.
Or did you mean gating the other twitter?
I've been on G+ for almost two weeks now and loving it. Would be more than happy to invite others.
Easy way to get grandparents to switch is to only post pictures of the grandchildren on Google+. They will switch over.
Also, WTH does "gate twitter and Facebook" mean?
honestly
I hate how everything is locked down...
I wish there was a nice way that people could syndicate between things i.e. an open network with a privacy model
I simply have not seen a nice way to do this any suggestions ?
(no Diaspora does not even look useful)
something with OpenID would actually be useful !

I'd love an invite (ephemeriis@gmail.com), if somebody out there has one available.
I'm not a fan of Facebook. I use it largely because my wife does. I'd love to get her switched to something better... And everyone keeps raving about Google+. She's even curious enough that I might be able to get her to try it.

It seems that the invite-only PicasaWeb albums (where only specific google accounts have access) would no longer be invite-only. That alone is reason enough to not join G+. When signing up for G+, they gave the following notice:
Linking Google+ with Picasa Web Albums
When you join Google+:
* [...]
* Your albums' visibility settings aren’t changed, but people they’re shared with can now share them with others.
* [...]
If they could fix this issue, I would sign up. Otherwise, forget it.

I am getting a little tired of the bragging by people who get access to Google +. I'm among the most who have to wait 6 months to a year for the system to open to everyone before I even get to get a good look at it. I'm not complaining, but I am tired of the bragging by people who manage to try it out.

Everybody looking for the next great thing, looking about a bit and essentially gone a week or two later. I don't really believe adults want social networking. Even teenagers are starting to get wise to the fact they are just a gigantic waste of time and serve primarily as advertising medium. I predict in a few years not much will be left, except specialized sites, such as XING. These do have some merit, but also do not take a lot of your time.
Most ACs are not even worth the keystrokes to insult them. Be generically insulted by this and ignored otherwise.

Uggg, I hope you don't do UI design in your job. Google+'s UI is horrid.
It took me three tries before I figured out how to post my profile picture. One would naturally go to Profile... Photos... but that's actually not the way you do it. Even after figuring it out, it still tells me I have no photos of myself. I now have the same photo three times in three different "books" and still can't figure out how three were created.
I still have no idea how to post on someone else's wall.
And when I post on my own, I have to choose circles to share it with. Fine. But once it's posted, it doesn't tell me which ones. So if I think I did something wrong and change the sharing, a second post appears.
That's the first three of dozens of problems.
It's terrible.

ad logicam Claiming a proposition is false because it was presented as the conclusion of a fallacious argument.
I did the strict "don't mix business with pleasure" on Facebook too. I'd lightened up and added some, but then I got into arguments on Facebook with managers over topics like the mosque project near the Twin Towers (they were actually pretty racist, which I had previously been unaware of), and had to remove them.
With Google+, I feel the same way. I can finally have a public profile again! My Facebook had eventually been completely private, locked down, and I really didn't even enjoy HAVING to respond if someone messaged me.
I'm addicted now. I feel with Google+ like I did when I first joined Twitter. I ran to Twitter to just be myself, and damn the consequences. The only problem there, of course, was eventually locking down that account too.
With both services, it was never really easy to say I want THIS public, I want THIS private, and I want THIS to be a mix. Google+ is both granular and simple. I have no plans to lock anything down again. Circles is what I've been waiting for this whole time.
I don't give a damn if Google+ is bigger than Facebook or not. It's my new home, and if people want to stay at Facebook, so be it. I've got another circle for people who ignore my invites who I occasionally will say hi to and have Google email them my update.

Is there a way for me to easily segregate friends into groups and restrict what each of those groups see? What I mean by that is, one of the things that really annoyed me with Facebook was that it was difficult to segregate my co-workers, friends, and family into different groups. With every post, I basically had to manually exclude groups. Obviously there are some pictures that I only want friends to see, some posts that I don't want co-workers but do want friends and family to see, etc. And I don't ever want my co-workers, friends, and family intermingling (I would prefer they not even be able to see each other). I'm tired of hearing my mother complain because one of my college buddies posts a dirty joke on my wall or pic. This kind of stuff was a total pain-in-the-ass with Facebook (especially early on). That SNL skit about the sanitizer service to keep mom from seeing your Facebook posts is a good illustration of just how frustrating that was.
Belying its roots as a fellow-college-student-only social site, Facebook always defaults to "I want everyone to see this! Hell yeah!" Which has made it difficult to use with anyone who wouldn't appreciate hearing my political rants, or seeing pictures of me hammered at some party. There are now ways to manually do this on Facebook, but I was hoping Google+ would come up with something more elegant and automatic.

"You say my way of thinking cannot be tolerated? What of it?"
I would like an Invite (marius dot vandeventer at gmail dot com). I use Facebook mostly because my Wife uses it (mirroring the reason given by a previous post), as well as my old school "friends" (read: guys/gals who thought i was a geek at school) as well as family (pretty important to me). Most of us always seem to rant about how "strange and useless facebook is, but at least we can stay in touch". The most infuriating part about facebook has been the difficulty in finding/setting features. I know there is probably a way to fix these, but the difficulty in finding fixes is part of the frustration: *Some friend's posts just never appear, n o matter how you set the feed/choose which feed/whatever. *Friends who do absolutely nothing on fb all day but play games, but try and unfriend them and they get all teary/huffy (hopefully they won't follow me to G+). *Lists which might as well not be there (circles should be better). *How Do You Use freaking RSS on FB? There is supposed to be a way... *Making sure your security settings are still the way you left them last. Like I said, most of you might come up with "dude, you can fix that, just go to...". The problem is that I cannot seem to get these things done easily, and I am supposed to be a Geek. Hopefully G+ will be a bit more Intuitive.
Thanks for the invites!

I believe there is already a plugin for chrome (maybe firefox also) that can get twitter and facebook showing up in your stream in google+. I would post links but I just remember seeing posts in google+ from friends that were using said plugins.
Before Google Plus is ready for prime time, Google has a few things they really need to fix with the service
- Make +1 make sense. Currently pages you or others "+1" do not even appear in the stream. They're on a totally different page. This makes the +1 button useless.
- Either get rid of Buzz, or integrate it. it's currently nonsensical that Google is running both, yet Buzz updates don't go into your G+ stream.
- Integration with Google Reader. It sure would be nice if things from my Google Reader showed up in my G+ stream, because then you wouldn't have to leave, and it would facilitate simple sharing. This was a big oversight.
- "Sparks" (AKA Google News) needs to be in your stream. The current implementation is not useful.
- Gate for twitter. Google already has this with Buzz, why on earth did they release G+ without it, I have no clue. It makes me use G+ less because I now have to update two things.
Basically - Google needs to get as much into that stream as possible, and allow the user to filter by subsections if they want - NOT force the data into it's own little islands.
I love to have an invite if someone is willing to send it to me. Thanks ahead of time! kefton (gmail)

I'll take a faceless giant company (who no doubt knows more about me than I do) over some company run by an egotistical dweeb any day.
What do I know, I'm just an idiot, right?
That would be the goon rush :)
You can thank the awesome people over at the SA forums for all those :)
(And I can thank them for my invite!)
Of course, when you get invited by a goon, you can expect that you will be added to a bunch of people's circles quite quickly.
I went from maybe 5-10 goons in a circle to something like 400 now, and I don't see the goon rush stopping anytime soon.
I have been saying for years that facebook is just a fad, just like myspace was, and ICQ, and geocities, and who knows how many others, all of whom were seen as the place to be in their heyday. And yet facebook seemed to entrench itself well enough in the public mindset that I was starting to second guess my judgment.
Now google+ seems to be generating quite a bit of buzz of it's own, and amazingly enough, not just among the tech crowd. My girlfriend (a nurse) was commenting yesterday that all her co-workers were talking about it at work the other night, so maybe Google can really pull this off?
The part that makes this whole launch seems strange though is that what makes a social networking site work properly is the ability to find everyone you know on it, the idea of limiting who can apply seems rather counterproductive. And yet somehow it's working for Google.
Either way, I'm eager to get in and see how it works. I've been periodically checking to see when they open the floodgates, and I suppose I really wouldn't mind an invite either, after all, I do use google for pretty much everything else, (I have my radio callsign (VE6RAH) as my existing account on gmail if anyone is so inclined)
The big question though is one that nobody can answer yet with any certainty... will google+ manage to draw enough people away from facebook... will people who already use facebook for everything see a reason to switch... I guess only time will tell.

"I'd much rather be mistaken as a lesbian by a bigot than be mistaken as a bigot by a lesbian."
Indeed. I run a Wordpress install that works like this. The site is password-protected and not indexed by search engines. The RSS feed uses an obfuscated URL and is also password-protected. I also added a public RSS feed where the posts/comments are essentially empty: it just acts as a 'ping' so people know there is new content. (This is for users who for some reason can't use the password-protected feed.) Everyone can posts text, links, images, videos, etc. It's all private and versatile and customizable. (Both in terms of allowing me/us to customize the site feel/content, and because users can access using whatever web-browser and/or RSS reader they like best.) Works great.
Is such a system scalable? Sorta. If you are a member of many such 'private blogs' you can certainly add them all to your RSS reader and follow them all conveniently. However this is somewhat more clunky than something like Facebook, where another entity takes care of all the admin details for you (both in terms of hosting the content and managing your social subscriptions).
I could easily imagine refining the distributed Web/RSS system... e.g. creating a standard Wordpress plugin that does all of the securing/accounts/RSS in a simple way, using crypto key-pairs instead of passwords (or OpenID or something) so that everyone can just use a single login for the whole social network, rather that creating and manging numerous accounts all over the place. You could even have some big players offer 'one-click' social-network-group-creation (Wordpress.com, etc.) while still inter-operating with those of us who want to run and manage and control our own social-network-group.
So, I think it can be done. However Facebook and now Google+ certainly provide a simpler and easier interface. This will thus attract users and a distributed model will fail to gain traction because the advantages (true privacy and control over your own content) are too nebulous for most users.
Invite sent!
I believe that Google+ allows users to back up all of their data (pictures, posts, whatever), including Google+-specific data like whose in which 'circles'. Can someone correct me?

yep. however it would be relatively easy to write a couple modules for drupal anyway that would provide the missing functionality. I believe the major missing pieces are as follows: something to aggregate comments from syndicated media and syndicate them as well, and something to handle the initial handshake (password exchange) and add an entry to the aggregator to start pulling content. After that, so long as you're pulling from the root feed, the user can even create new content types and expect the primary content (the title and HTML body) to be syndicated to "following" sites.
(I know jack about Wordpress and only so much about drupal, but I have written minor modules, contributed patches, etc)

Because it allows you to share nothing with no one. I have an account on joindiaspora, but it's fucking useless. And it takes a lot for me to say that, because I really want to like it.

This is a situation where one synonym for "hype" is "curiosity." There isn't any way to understand WTF Google+ really is (from a user's point of view (*)) unless you check it out.
I'm surprised that anyone is surprised about all the signups. The large signups doesn't mean people lik-- um I mean-- +1 the service. It just means they're taking look. Google is significant on the web, no matter what else you think of them.
(*) And yes, of course it's worth thinking about what it might be, from Google's point of view, before you start leaking new information.

Once you get your own invite here, don't forget to share the love. Note that there is no limit on how many people you can invite (it's not like it was with GMail), though there seems to be a global counter that throttles new registrations - so those who get your invite may not be able to use it immediately.
To invite someone, simply make a new G+ post ("Share" in top right corner), and put the email of the person you want to get in the invite is listed in the "people to share with" textbox. If you want to invite several people at once, you can put them all in a circle (you can put arbitrary emails into your circles, they don't have to be registered with G+) and then make a new post shared with that circle. They will get the invite shortly, and you can then delete the post if you want.

Thanks for including me in your circle david.c.mann on gmail.com
My wife, a public school teacher, would *never* consider allowing her students past and present to be Facebook friends.
With G+ and its circles, the idea of including students in her online social network is now more amenable. Teachers will now be able to reach out to students past and present in profound ways: topical blogging, supplemental curriculum, links to educational material and news articles—and no worries about pics from college days, dubious turpitude, or expressions of personal beliefs. It has been a wise school-district policy to not use any online social networking services to interface with students, but with circles, perhaps this policy can be revisited.

Think about it: You only go there if there are people you know. Having users invite others works both for Google and for the users: Google has crowdsourced the marketing and the users can invite all those they want to see there.
Well done, Google.

But I hate feeling left out :p. I wouldn't mind seeing what all the fuss is about; I've got an email for such things that's the same as my slashdot username, at gmail.
And no, I don't care if everyone knows that; that's sort of the whole *point* of a public email address. You could easily guess it anyway, given, you know, it's my screen name everywhere, @ the most popular email provider.
Would really like to be able to evaluate it.
