Lucas to Make Sequels to Star Wars After All?
SageMadHatter writes "After denying the possibility of three new Star Wars movies taking place after the original triology story line, it appears that the possibility has actually opened up."

His work on the last couple movies has been outstanding. I hope he keeps directing them himself. May the force be with him!

It's enough to make a grown man cry... Six more hours of Jar-Jar... It means they'll have to do a whole new 4, 5, and 6 so that they can edit it whatever new story details Lucas feels are necessary. ...and Greebo will still shoot first...
Who would have thought that an anonymous post on a fan site about something so obvious would lead to something like this.... no ... no really... who would have thought?
Not only has George Lucas destroyed our Star Wars past, but the future as well!
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Lucas pass out NDAs at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.
I wonder if George Lucas will revise history again and say that he *DID* originally plan to film 9 chapters from the beginning.
The story on this has changed a few times.

Without ten more years of new Star Wars, whatever would fans have to complain about?
...Also, I didn't know Buggalo could fly.
...that *if* they get made, they don't degrade my fun memories of what Star Wars *should be* any further.... :-(
Preferably the same who directed ESB.

The first trilogy was excellent.
The second trilogy has, to date, been somewhere between lousy and sub-par.
I'm no mensa member, but I can spot a pattern here.
--
There are no longer any orginal ideas in Hollywood, of course Lucas will keep the franchise rollin'.
By episode 9, there will be no live actors at all.
I didn't think it was possible for a sequel to actually change my enjoyment of the original. But, Lucas has managed to do it. The new movies have worn me down. I now avoid my yearly watching of the original trilogy out of bitterness and resentment.
I always save my last mod point to mod up a good troll. You people are too serious.
Jar Jar Binks and Ewoks team up to make a suckfest...
So far, we've got three movies which don't stand the test of time (the orignal three) and two movies that stand neither the test of time nor of wallet nor of stomach (the most recent pair).
It's a pretty safe bet that Revenge of the Sith is going to smell like the ass of a baboon, too.
And yet, finding a SW fan who'll mail nine bucks to UNICEF, instead of going to the midnight show of a movie with a character named Kit Fisto, is like pulling teeth from a chicken.
Pass. Pass pass pass pass pass.

If Lucas thinks that he can get money out of the frothing masses of geeks, then he'll do it. Hence, the DVDs to be released this fall, after saying that he would only release DVDs as a full 6-box set?
I honestly ask, is anybody surprised anymore?
"What? More money? OK!"
-_-;;
I'm still clinging to the fleeting hope that the Ep. 3 doesn't completely suck ass. And maybe we'll get lucky and he'll have someone else write/direct/cast/everything the next three...
I hope not.
No matter how bad he makes the prequels they are still doing well financially. He's releasing the original trilogy on DVD and thats gonna make a good buck. It was only a matter of time before he made the full 9 films he originally promised.
If we are lucky he'll go with the formula of the original trilogy and let others direct.
If we are really lucky he'll go out and get someone who actually knows how to write a good script.
It would be nice to actually see if they can get some no name actors that actually know how to act.
oh.. and wookies!!!
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
Not content with raping the childhood memories of fans of the original movies, he's now doing the same for fans of the prequels. All seventeen of them.
If he used the stories from the Thrawn Trilogy, and got a different director, basically only producing the project (taking some cut), they might be ok.
I for one look forward to:
Star Wars VII : Jar-Jar Wars
Star Wars VIII: Jar-Jar Strikes Back
Star Wars IX: The Return of Jar-Jar
Lucas Arts personelle are just signing NDA's...that say they specifically cannot discuss Star Wars 7, 8 and 9.
I can neither confirm, nor deny that statement.
Although this begs the question, should we ponder if it will happen or if we want it to happen?
I agree with everyone equally.

The originaly Star Wars trilogy has been pushed back another 10 years. Lucas says that he is now spending time on the next trilogy and doesn't have time for the original and he would like to make the original release absolutely perfect.
In related news, Lucas is rumored to be modifying the original trilogy to match with the timeline of the final trilogy and a special edition of the latest trilogy is being prepared for the same reasons.

The quest for more money!
Spaceballs invented it, someone had to say it.
There is no spork.
"If I don't make them, someone else might later," said Lucas. "I want to be sure I'm the one to fuck them up."
A big party featuring the ewoks and the jar jars and some other new alien going "MISA FISA j00SA n00bsa!" Sure and lets add the cousins of Chewbacca to top it off.
I see this hapenning since its all about money (always was but much more today) but I don't expect storylines like the originals where it wasn't just about some dumb kid who touches buttons and by magic destroys a whole space station with fancy effects which are suppose to enhance the experience. The way episode 1-2 progressed, I just hope for his own sake that he makes something that could compensate for episode 1-2 (can't say for 3).
It might be nice to see Mark Hamill as Luke again now that his voice has gone from whiney to the Joker.
Is it possible to fashion my lightsabre into a noose?
Please for the love of gods no! Just say no George.
Makes me start to think favourably about all those stupid "Peter Jackson should do the next Star Wars movie" jokes.

Interesting how a post titled funny can be rated insightful!
I submitted this story last night, and it didn't get posted.
He should hand the reigns over to Spielberg - at least for one movie.
Seriously. Lucas is a great storyteller, but not the greatest writer.
He's a great filmaker, but not the best director.
He creates wonderful characters - but doesn't flesh them out as it seems they should be.
I'm being a little harsh here; I personally think that episode II was pretty nifty (episode I had about 60% nifty): and I've never written a script nor some of the most renound movies of all time.
But let speilberg take a whack. Lucas created this universe, but I think someone else may be able to wield it in ways never dreamed.
After all, the greatest swordsmith isn't always the best fencer. The greatest composer not always the greatest musician.
If you have a chance, look at the special features where Lucas tries to explain how basically every scene from Star Wars was copied from Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress.
Except for the laser guns, it's the same story in the same film. Even the music is similar.

The fact that you are asked to sign an NDA is fair game. After all, what if you refuse to sign? You could safely say that "I've refused to sign an NDA saying that I won't discuss anything regarding the making of episodes seven, eight, and nine."
On the other hand, if you do sign it is it legal for them to add into the NDA that you are not allowed to disclose the fact that you've even signed an NDA? You could always then say "Before I sign this, hang on a sec..." [send email to news site before NDA is applicable] "Okay, I'm ready to sign now..."

There is lots of possibility for a good set of movies here, simply because they don't eventually tie into episodes 4,5,6. By turning up the creativity meter, coupled with the new freedom, Lucas can direct something good. But if it's done superficially....let's not go into that. I think the main problem with episodes 1,2,3 was that Lucas tried too hard to imitate the style of 4,5,and 6 and at the same time include "modernized" elements (like Jar Jar). It will be interesting to see just what the storyline is. Episode 4 5 6 built up to an epic scale that I would like to see continue. Lucas should shed the old-scifi of Star Wars so far and roughen it up some more (like in the many cool Star Wars novels). Although I don't think they will base 7 8 9 on books...I can almost smell the canon/non-canon flame wars and moaning...
There were supposed to be 9 chapters anyway, at least thats what the original intention was.
I don't know when the idea got popularized that there were going to be only 6 movies.
At this point tho, I think there are many who have a firm belief that there are only the original 3, and I for one can't blame them.
hmm she was hot 20 years ago, but that was 20 years ago. will she be up to the task again?
Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Is the story line covering the invasion of the Yuuzan Vong. Though I doubt they could summarize the entire saga into 3 movies. They have trouble fitting one book into one movie....let alone 10+ books into one movie.
Of course...this would only be good if they can capture the ideology behind the Vong and their unique 'religion'. I suspect if this storyline were taken, it would be more episode 1 and 2 crap of too much special effects and not enough plot/story.
Mod points are pointless when you browse at -1.
IIRC, after the success of the first two, he started outlining the trilogy of trilogy's.
Can't recall where I read, saw, heard, this but I recall hearing it.
Grand Admiral Thrawn would be awesome to watch. The storly line of this trilogy was well thought out and written well. Of course the main participants of Luke and the gang came in and saved the day like they do in most of the post Episode 6 novels, they would have to get others to play their parts since they are all way too old. The guy who played Chewbacca has a clause in his contract that he must be in any sequels after RotJ, I believe I read that on starwars.com but could be mistaken.
I hope the stories are lifted straight from Timothy Zahn's trilogy on the New Republic's new nemesis... Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Seriously, this man should be sued for robbing the world of what could've been extremely valuable pieces of culture that positively influenced the lives of youths as much as the original did decades ago. I don't really care if he's coming out with 3 more. In my eyes, there will only ever be 3 starwars movies.
LilMikey.com... I'll stop doing it when you sto
It seems to me that Lucas could run into lots of trouble with sequels conflicting with the enormous, convoluted, and in places, self-contradictory universe of the Star Wars Books. Of course, the solution I propose is to use the Trhawn series as the scripts for the sequels. Does anythone think that this could actually happen?
If ep 7-9 are based off of Timothy Zahn's books, they would have some potential. Although if Lucas got his fingers into the screenplay's there would be some issues.
In defense of Jar Jar: he serves a great role. He's the mascot... I believe every anime I've watched has a mascot... but they were not saying, "Mesa gonna die, massa?"
From the article:
According to fan site Theforce.net, employees at Lucas's company Industrial Light and Magic have all been made to sign non-disclosure agreements to promise not to talk about the possibility of episode's seven, eight and nine being made.
Okay so Lucas is keeping his options open, but this seems like hype-building to me. He's going to have to announce the films as soon as they hit production, after all.
Pretty pointless considering the vast majority of movie-goers of this generation wouldn't care about a new set of Star Wars films. Bland plot, extremely good CGI, overall unenjoyable. The only real hope is that eps 7-9 would be free of the constraint to match the story up with those coming later. Lucas is pretty much free to cover any ground he wants (assuming he'll ignore the books) and produce a more enjoyable set of films.
Expanded Universe, not European Union. :)
Now, the same thing happened when the new Star Wars novels came out, since there had already been a hypothetical "Post-Jedi" timeline established by the old Star Wars Marvel comic. And Lucas has been very clear on saying that anything not in the movies is only a "what if" rather than official Star Wars canon. I mean, he's had no problem tromping all over stuff that WAS canon (Han shooting first, etc.), so I guess wiping out years of speculative storytelling is no big deal.
Unless he were to use some of the existing EU storylines in new movies...hey, you think Bothans would make good plush toys?
--- Where's my car, and why are these grass stains on my pants?
Maybe if they made a zillion and one Jar Jar clones and then kill off each one in a horrible, ungodly painful manner? I'd watch three movies of that.
You know it's going to happen but it still hurts seeing it in print like this.
Yeah, SW1,2,3 fucked up story line in such matter that not even one more movie and reedited 4,5,6 couldn't bring it back.
In parts 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 (or 7,8,9) you can expect that final truth will be revealed, Luke is in fact illegitimate son of Christel and Steven Carrington (here is the surprise twist that Lucas was carrefully preparing for last few years, Steven is supposed to be gay, but Lucas will show that all the facts were run by money play in Dinasty) and 3PI0 gets killed with can opener from sundays commercial. Oh, yeah Ewoks that were cut from part 6 are now replaced by alieans who resined their role in Alien vs. Predator sequel (Thay are fed up that they loose every time, and wait with thrill to replace Ewoks in now completely new "Aliens dance").

Any and all new Star Wars content should be scrictly limited to an NJO (mini?)series.
The storyline is kinda left wide open. I mean if Anakin was supposed to bring balance to the force, wouldn't that imply the between Luke and Lea, one becomes Jedi and the other Sith?
....oh well, just musing.....
I'm wondering if not having all your original parts ultimately makes you more vulnerable to the dark side as well? - which would imply that Luke would ultimately turn to the dark side (presumably after training Lea).
Might explain why Dooku did not kill Anakin outright but instead severed his arm and could imply that Vader cut off Luke's hand by design as well.

The search for more money
I didn't mind episodes 1 & 2 or the 2nd and 3rd matrix movies. You just have to be honest with yourself before you go in the theatre. Accept that the acting and plot may be horrible, and wait patiently for the special effects and fight scenes. It seems that half the purpose of the movie is to have something to talk about whether it be good or bad.
I'll bet that he would try to get this deal inked before his next stinker hits the theaters. I didn't see EPII in theaters, and I won't go see EPIII either. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... can't get fooled again. It was (barely) worth a DVD rental. But it was only about 1 hour long, what with all the fast-forwarding.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
for years, i've known that Lucas would never let his best money-maker die.
and i'm also betting that there will be more star wars movies made after Lucas dies.
after all, star trek didn't die with Roddenberry...
That's not how NDAs work. You sign an NDA saying that you acknowledge that you'll hear stuff that's private and that you agree not to disclose it outside of the circle of people who are bound by the agreement. Anyone who wrote an NDA with the specifics of what is not to be discussed would be a fool.
***Foucault is watching you..***
What do you mean they fucked up the story line? They follow the story perfectly, except for the mitochondrians thing, which apparently got dumped anyway. So, that was some heretical speaking about the faith of the Force. Or some crap like that.
What got fucked up is just the fact that Ep 1 sucked. The story line was fine, the whole movie blew ass chunks, though.
At least Jar Jar grew up, though he still has a really annoying voice. bleah. I hope he dies at the hands of Darth Sidious or even better Lord Vader, in Ep 3.

He should wait another 15 years until people are clamoring for more Star Wars and have forgetten the leasons of the past. This way he'll also have time to put out the Ultimate Special Editions of the Original Trilogy with all new Jar Jar scenes and the new Super Special Remastered Editions of the Prequels in the Super 18 disk combo pack with your very own Jar Jar.
Not interested.
You know what would make me interested? If Lucas could only spend $10 million per movie. Why? Because then he'd have to think more about how to make them interesting. Maybe with a challenge, he'd be forced to do something interesting.
So why do I feel this way? I have the Back to the Future triology on DVD. Somewhere in that DVD, they mention that in the original script getting the DeLorean back to the future would have resulted to a little journey to the testing of a nuclear bomb in the desert side of the USA. Unfortunately, they had no budget for doing that kind of set, so they kept it in Hill Valley. Hence, the lightning strike idea was born. I'm hoping (crossed fingers here) that if Lucas were to actually hit some of these limitations instead of having his original ideas be 'possible' with all the neato technology they have at ILM, he'd have to revise his ideas a few times and something interesting would be born.
This is not a guarantee, of course, but I'd at least have interest in another trilogy if he had SOME kind of hurdle to overcome.

Please, oh please, Mr. Lucas, tell me you would base these on one or more of the existing series of Star Wars novels set in that timeframe, many of which were well written and thought out. I wouldn't presume to recommend anything specific, as I've only read a few (good and bad), but there is a lot of worthwhile material out there. It would be a tremendous disservice to both those authors and your fans to disregard or ignore it!
you'll see George Lucas masturbate into a giant pile of cash,
Cuz it keeps all the little Star Wars Fansites going for a few more years. We were all beginning to wonder what was going to happen to us after Episode 3.

So when is the Hawkeye movie coming out?
I wonder if these three new films are actually the DVD-release of the first three episodes. From what I have heard they certainly look to be totally different films from the original release.
If he can put out movies like the Prequels and make hundreds of millions why not put out 3 more. I'm sure the writing and directing must be so tiring for him but....
m l
The only hope is that he really does decide that he can't handle the workload of making hundreds of millions on the most basic writing anyone could come up with and have someone else write and direct it.
If you want an idea of what Lucas thinks of the art of filmmaking (and basically what he has managed to build his entire empire, hee hee, off of). Check out this from an interview with Gary Kurtz, a producer on Star Wars and Empire.
http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/376/376873p1.ht
In reference to Lucas' changes in going from Amaerican Graffitti to Empire.
"I think the most unfortunate thing that happened was the fact that Indiana Jones came along, and Raiders of the Lost Ark had come out in between. George and I had many, many discussions about that, but it boiled down to the fact that he became convinced that all the audience was interested in was the roller-coaster ride, and so the story and the script didn't matter anymore."
Knowing Lucas, he's probably getting ready to cast Ben Affleck or Leonardo Di'Caprio as Thrawn.
You don't want to appear less than heroic.
As long as Natalie Portman is casted into it somehow, as say, Leia's daughter and wears a Bikini I'm sure it'll be a box office hit.
Lucas likes to shake things up, maybe this will be the first sequels where the main actors have been replaced with all CG copies of themselves :)
Just because there's an NDA... doesn't mean there will ever be a product.
6 bad movies must be better than 3!
Logic, macros, and more
well, he's already 60, so eventually he'll get old and feeble and start thinking of crappy ideas like making greedo shoot first and-
oh crap.
This is legal CYA. That's it. Maybe he will do 7-9, maybe he won't. The NDA cannot be taken, however, as an indicator that he will.
Unbunch your panties, fanboys and Lucas-hatas alike, and go find something else worth discussing.
to have peter jackson make them
He should make all three movies as he normally would and splice in shots at random times showing Jar Jar being horribly tortured. It would probably balance into a watchable film.
Well, it has never been successfully tested.
I've enjoyed every single Star Ward movie I've seen, including the new ones. If you re-watch the original movies, then watch the new ones, they're all very much along the same vein. Simple, clear storylines; mostly predictable plot; silly alien characters and situations; and some nice special effects.
Am I alone in this?

Seriously, if there is a sequel - I want the original actors - and I want to see Luke follow the same path as Anakin.
*THAT* would be worth seeing.
After all, anyone who paid any attention to what Yoda said in Empire knows that Luke is trending to the dark side. Heck, it is even shown in ROTJ. About the only "light side" thing he does is refuse to strike down Vader. Everything else really seems to go against Yoda's philosopy.
Having Han and Leia fighting against Luke would be interesting... provided that the other luke... LUCAS stayed out of it.
Try to hack my 31337 firewall!
Surely Star Trek serves a classic example of what happens when you end up jumping back and forth to the beginning and end of events in a particular universe - ulitmately, money rules over cohesion of historical events until the whole mythology is totally messed up.
Episodes 4,5 & 6 are absolute classics and relate the story of a particular thread of events in the Star Wars universe - yes, after finishing "Return Of The Jedi", Lucas might have gone on into a subsequent film or trilogy about post-Darth Vader events - but I think he's already proven, as Rick Berman and Brannon Braga have with "Enterprise", that trying to write a prequel to fit into the existing accepted mythology is virtually impossible.
Lucas should put Star Wars down now and go off and retire with the money he has.
Gentoo Linux - another day, another USE flag.
Honestly - is the new trilogy so bad after all? It is different, true, because of the different time. The original trilogy happens during the Imperial reign, and the Galaxy has actually gone backwards a bit. While the new trilogy has the Republic still somewhat in it's glory days and the Galaxy is culturally much more advanced. I myself somehow enjoy all those magnificent costumes, palaces and all.
The story isn't that awesome, agreed, but really, is the original either? I feel a big reason for complaining is that the complainers themselves aren't the same people anymore. I imagine many here are between 30 and 40 - still somewhat young when SW came out. The younger have probly saw them quite long ago too. I just think that the feeling you get from a sci-fi movie at the age of 30 is quite different from what you'd get if you were 15, and that may well be a reason many dislike the new movies.
...why must we feed off the table scraps of George Lucas?! WHY?!!!!

This is just a slick way to garner hype for episode 3.
If they can make money at it... they probably will film it. Just take control away from George. They guy is not the wellspring of originality.

Parent can see things before they happen. He can help you. Mod him up!
But how are they going to get Jar-Jar into the story so long after Episode 3? : /
The only reason I rented ep 2 on video was to watch the luscious Natalie Portman. Since eps 7, 8, and 9 won't have this little hottie in them strutting her stuff, what exactly is supposed to be the draw?

Has everyone forgotten the horrid episode IV-and-a-half, also known as 'Star Wars Holiday Special'?
Episode I was definitely not the first sub-par installment (in our chronology at least).
I also vaguely remember the two 'Ewok Adventures' I used to watch as a kid, and enjoyed, though at the time I was not yet old enough to be a good critic. When are these three bastard children going to be re-released?
Luke, after receiving the award for his heroism, abruptly looses public adoration and affection when Lea announces her plans of a tour with Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson.
Luke quickly becomes starved for public attention and acts out in the form of a vicious cocaine addition and public acts of beastiality with Chewy at intergalactic S&M clubs.
Han Solo conducts an intervention with Luke in which Luke enters rehab and is slowly cured of his addictions... or so they all think. Luke is really just pretending to be cured to get close to Lea.
He starts a fan club of for the new sensation, The Coshmos. This allows him to get close enough that he eventually is able to take Lea out with a sniper rifle he purchases from Jason Bourne in Bourne Revolutions.
They are still working on the ending, but I think that G.I. Joe talks about the dangers of Heroin addictions and says something about knowing being half the battle...
- Have you ever noticed that the more you learn about technology, the more stupid you sound trying to explain it?
Mark and Carrie still do the fanfest circuit thing, so i'd count on them particpating if asked. Ford said in an interview years ago that he'd at least cameo in it.
In one scene, a character named Greedy, played by George Lucas himself, will shoot a character called Hastwo Scriptoo first...
The movie will end up among the most watched movies of the year and everyone will hate it.
Beware: In C++, your friends can see your privates!
You've caught on to his moviemaking method!
So, Lucas is going to squeeze out three more turds for the fanboys.

There is no need to worry over how Lucas will ruin 3 more Star Wars films; it will never happen. First, the NDA stuff is a rumor that has been around for a while, and is just there to protect some IP. Second, Lucas is too old to want to devote another solid 10 years to the single topic of SW films. Third, Lucas has said in public that he wants to do more stuff in TV next. Fourth, there is no story. Its now clear that ROTJ ends the story arc that Lucas wanted to tell. Fifth, and last, is that there is way too much SW Universe crap put there (30+ novels) that fill up from the day after ROTJ to 20+ years beyond. Yes, I know that they are not "canon" unless Lucas writes them, but there is way too much out there and way to much money invested to then have some new movies come out and change it all. Can you imagine the fan backlash if all the stuff the novels created was then just made into "fan-fiction?" Get real.

A: So it would be "Harry Potter: Episode One". [Laughter]. No, but a lot of people have asked that. It is all George Lucas's fault. You won't need a prequel; by the time I am finished, you will know enough. I think it would be shamelessly exploitative to do that. I am sure that Mr Lucas is doing it only for artistic reasons, but in my case I think that by the time you have had the seven books you will know everything you need to know for the story.
"Artist reasons" -- LOL. I love JKR.

This makes perfect sense to me. Over the last few years, Lucas hasn't wanted to take the focus off the current franchise (eps 1,2,3), by setting expectations about an additional three movies. Now that the current franchise is running out (episode III releases May 2005), it is time to think about the future roadmap ($) of the star wars franchise. From a marketing perspective, I'm sure it is better to treat the whole series as three separate franchises, instead of a huge nine-movie sequence. (Was it just me who was bored of Star Trek because there seemed there would be no end in sight for their movies?) I've always thought once Episode 3 releases, there will be a big collective, "now what?" from the audience. Isn't episode 3 going to be a pretty big downer? ("Vader kills everyone, now go re-watch episodes 4,5,6") Next year would be perfect time to announce the final trilogy. :-)
. . .
That said, I hope Lucas does film the final three episodes.
I'd like to see it set in Luke Skywalker's later years (50 yrs old+). The awesome part about this would be that Lucas could use some of the same actors for the final trilogy!!! (introducing newer younger characters too of course).
In short, provide an entire movie timeline into the history of, rise to fame, and final glory of Luke Skywalker. Now *that* would be cool.

I still remember him saying.
Forgetting for a moment that Lucas just doesn't have the ability to direct these movies anymore. I try to think what could be done with 7-9 and I keep coming back to my friend's quote.

I heard that Lucas decided to steal the title for the yet-to-be-made sequel to Spaceballs
I'd rather see a sequel to Mel Brook's Spaceballs.
Anyway, Yogurt promised! "Spaceballs II: The search for more money!"
After all, who can dismiss a wonderful parody like this:
Lord Helmet: I'm your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roomate.
Lone Starr: And what does that make us?
Lord Helmet: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
This makes perfect sense to me.

I know quite a few people couldnt stand this series. I actually felt it had a very good plot line with the Cardassians and the Dominion however. Sure it was based around a space station in the middle of nowhere, but they did many shows which were not aboard it. Rick Berman did an awesome job with it.
You don't want to look, but you have to.
Seriously, George, if you're reading this, share some control with some of your trusted friends. Episodes I & II were so terribly bad. If you do VII-IX, please for the love of Yoda get your good buddy Steven Spielberg on the project and let him deal with the actors.
I don't think you have the right Kaufman. this guy is still very much alive, and released an Ashley Judd movie (messy) just this year.

...is that with Star Trek, it's no longer being guided by the man with the original vision, it's a couple of Roddenberry's lackeys and you can plainly see that they don't fully understand what he wanted Star Trek to be. (Although I will say that despite being in the obvious minority here, I really do enjoy Enterprise)
Star Wars however, only has Lucas to blame. It's as if it works better without a beginning or an end, like we'd rather look out the window into the story instead of walking down the street to see what's on the next block. It's like he's trying to come up with more story instead of letting it flow naturally, almost like his own creation doesn't make sense to him, and that is why I think the new ones don't appeal to us like the old ones did.

One of the great things that Star Wars has over Star Trek is that Lucas uses a lot of robots in his films whereas smart robots are almost non-existent (except for Data and Nomad). Enterprise should have been filled with all sorts of robots.
I think it is about time that somebody does a major sci-fi movie from the robot's point of view. Also I would like to see a lot more attention spent on the villain. The nice thing about the old Star Wars was that Darth Vader was much more prominent in the screeplay. He was really cool.

...because he has always taken the profit from the last to finance the next one. Episode III will be almost a break even at best. Figure a production cost of $150 million, and that is about what its domestic gross will be give or take $25 million.
He has trashed the franchise so badly be making drawn out, boring movies that even Jar-Jar wouldn't watch the next one.
Call me a troll, but I really liked 4-6, but I did not enjoy 1, and I detested 2. It is not because I am older either. My 7 year old would rather watch IV than any other one.
Perhaps the saddest thing of all is that Genndy Tartakovsky made the 25 minute long animated Clone Wars and it was better and more gripping in every way. Episode 19 was the best two minutes of Star Wars ever made. Lucus just doesn't have it anymore. Simple as that.

Let's see, they changed the way we think about sequels, they were all in the top 10 grossing movies of all time at the time they came out, they were re-released 20 years after there intitial release and made millions, they set the standard for special effects in movies...
I just can't see what yardstick you are using to measure the 'test of time', but you seriously ought to reconsider this statement. These movies will be around for several more decades before their shine begins to fade. That is standing the test of time, if you ask me.
I think it would be really cool if he did the story with Thrawn or some stuff from the X-Wing Saga. The Thrawn saga was amazing because Timothy Zahn did a great job with the story.

Well, just because the Empire fell doesn't mean things were all happy and cheery in the New Republic. The Empire fell, true, but it was not out. The Remnant Forces (as they came to be known) became quite prevalent and the Sith did begin to return, as did the Jedi. Thus, I see a sequel as a likely possibility.
However, on the other hand, I don't see Lucas directing as the best of ideas. I WOULd like to see Lucas make the OUTLINE for the series. I'd like to see him shape the overall plot. But for the tiny details, for the dialogue, and for other such things... I'd much see... well, a lot of other people doing that.
And may the Force be with us. Please.

The notion of 9 films (3 trilogies) has been around since before The Empire Strikes Back was released. At one point, an article in Analog stated that there were plans for 12 films, but I've never seen this claim repeated.
At the very first screening I went to, the 'Episode 4' title was missing. This was added as soon as it was obvious Lucas had a hit on his hands.
The Truce at Bakura was probably my favorite of the post-RotJ books, although the Dark Horse comic miniseries Dark Empire was a lot of fun too.

If Lucas does plan on doing Episodes 7-9, IMHO he should set them in a time beyond that which has been covered by the post Episode 6 novels. This would remove the constraints of pedantic FanBoys and their novels ("Thrawn's skin is not the right hue of blue!") and would allow for an opportunity to truly create something.
That said ... if Lucas is too involved, he still might blow it ;^)

Since Lucas continues to deny that he's going to do all 9 films that he originally envisioned, one can only hope that there might be a slim chance that he would giveup his throne and let another filmmaker finish off the last three.
Spielberg, Jackson, or Fincher would be nice.
Hopefully Lucas will get a clue and redeem himself with The Revenge of the Sith, although apparently he's already back in the cutting room after screening it to a bunch of "close" friends.
It's really tragic, because he pushes ILM incredibly hard and uses them as a source of inspiration to refine and make changes to things he hasn't decided on. In the end, a bunch of work from ILM goes either goes unnoticed, or gets exposed in the confines of a short-sighted story element, reducing the effectiveness of the visuals.
I just hope the whole "surfing on a bed of lava" ending turns out better than it sounds.

The above quote can be found here. It can also be found at this page hosted by the BBC.
There is also another quote by Spielberg on Lucas which I remember but cannot locate. Spielberg said something about Lucas's editing skills to the effect of: "I would allow George carte blanche to edit any one of my movies." It's a compliment to his editing skills, but sort of a left handed compliment when you think what that might imply about the rest of Lucas's movie making skills.

EPISODE VII
A CURIOUS MALADY
Soon after the dubiously abrupt collapse of the Empire, the Galaxy finds itself confronting a new threat. Emboldened by their decisive victory at the Battle of Endor, militant EWOKS are wreaking terror on several helpless star systems, whose colossal battleships and armored troops are of no more avail against the Ewoks' invincible logs and pointy sticks than the Empire's Walkers and Stormtroopers proved to be.
To resist the Ewok juggernaut, General HAN SOLO has volunteered to lead the armies of the Foboombah system, but his leadership has not proven valuable, since the Ewoks don't use blasters and he inexplicably refuses to fire the first shot. Nor can LUKE SKYWALKER be of assistance. Not only is he forbidden to instruct a new generation of Jedi, on account of his master's deathbed edict that "the last of the Jedi will [he] be," but he is also battling depression and hallucinations of ghosts who tell him profound-sounding things that usually turn out to be total bull a few years later.
Meanwhile, Princess LEIA SKYWALKER-SOLO-CALRISSIAN is leading a diplomatic mission to Naboo, to ask for assistance from the only race with a military track record that matches that of the undefeated Ewoks; only the GUNGAN arsenal of slingshots and superballs is sufficiently primitive to stand a chance against the Ewoks' own weaponry. And Captain WEDGE ANTILLES prepares to attack the Ewoks on the Forest Moon itself, accompanied by two Jawas and a malfunctioning R2 unit, on the principle that the victory always, without fail, goes to the smallest party involved....

Seeing as how all 9 episodes where conceived at once and simply written down on paper at different times this seems hardly surprising and hinting that the denials of sequels were nothing more than marketing ploys.

Let's stop and analyze this for a moment. EP3 may not suck that much after all (As long as Jar Jar is left out of it). After all, we KNOW how it's going to end.
The beginning of "A New Hope" opened with a downer. Vader and his team of bell-bottomed troops overtook the ship carrying Leia and kidnapped her.
We called that a "good movie".
EP5 ended with a downer (Oh god, he's going into an argument we saw in Kevin Smith's "Clerks".) as Luke lost a hand, found out Vader was his father and the whole nine years...
Now, with EP3, we KNOW how it ends. Another downer. Who cares what the script is like, we'll all go see it for "closure" and complete the whole Disney_Circle_Of_Life thingy.
On a personal note, I'd like to see Jar Jar's car break down somewhere and he decides to check the fuel level by striking a match and peeking down the gas-hole.
---
IMHO, of course.
May the SOURCE be with you.
Oh, great! When people wanted a sequel trilogy, he refused to consider it. Now that everyone wishes he would just stop, he decides to continue!
Years ago! I posted about this some time ago, but sadly I'm not a paid subscriber so I can't provide a link to my post form some time ago. That said, I'll retell it in an abbreviated version.
Many years ago GL and company were traveling the country promoting a new Star Wars movie. I seem to recall it being ROTJ. I remeber there being a band playing music and GL up ther eon the bandshell in downtown along with a couple of people dressed up like Jawas with him. (Not to mention that I had just been up at the local Mall and had my picture taken with Chewie and Vader.) So anyhow, the point being that I remember Gl saying he was going to do a total of 9 films, each one 3 years apart, over 21 years. Obviously that didn't happen. And if only I could provide some hard evidence other than a distinct childhood memory. Maybe I just fabricated teh whole experience as a dream. But for me, I know! He said he was going to make them. Just never did and dashed the hopes of a littel kid. Oh well...
I watched on my vacation all published SW movies with my girlfriend who has never watched them all. During that I thought what's different between the old episodes and the new ones. I remember I've seen episodes like 10 times each in my childhood, my (and my brother's and sister's) favorite movie was the Return of the Jedi.
Lines like that were one part that was present in the original trilogy, but not found in Episodes I and II. Short snappy comments, like Finnish couple that has been married to each other for 40 years talking to each other.
How did R2D2 and C-3PO talk to each other? Leia and Han Solo? The movie lived by their relations. There was some try with Anakin and Queen Amidala, but that was all quite expectable and straightforward.
What I'd like to see in next episode is the living characters, their snappy way of commenting each other and evolving characters in the movie. Little things that together build the feel of Star Wars movie.

As much as we bitch about how much these prequels suck, there is an audience that actually enjoys them.
I (we) hate them with a passion but today's 8 year olds love them and Jar Jar too. Yes they do.
Lucas might have ruined our childhood but he's giving a new childhood memorable sequences. And believe it or not, today's kids really don't like our version.
I about choked when a 12 year old told me that Star Wars (Episode IV) looked old and Phantom Menace was better.
Lucas is actually pretty smart in realizing how to capitalize on his new audience because we're suckers for paying for it anyway. With 10 years more of movie making for this story line, there will be yet another audience.
I just hope that Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow is better.
if you steal from one source, that is plagiarism, if you steal from many, well, that's just research.
Sure, go ahead. Just let someone else write and direct them. There are a lot of great ideas in Episodes 1 and 2, but for some reason Lucas couldn't carry them through to be movies on par with the originals.

I think that's a silly argument. If they were brilliantly written and directed, people would LOVE that and be relieved. We're not as smarmy and critical as you make us out to be. We're just disappointed in some shitty prequel movies.

Not withstanding Lucas' seemingly awesome ability to f*ck things up... this should come as pretty great news. Why? Because hopefully Lucas will do two things:
1) Hire directors and stay out of the director's chair himself. Lucas is a far better visionary than he is a director. When he gets to close to the director's chair we get cutesy sh*t that even kids think is gay.
2) Draw from any of the truly great (non George Lucas) Star Wars fiction that exists. Let's face it: Timothy Zahn writes better Star Wars than Lucas ever did. Hell, even the Star Wars comic series (Marvel) was better written than anything by Lucas.
Bottom line: Lucas should paint in big strokes. He's got a great talent for epic space opera. He's got a lousy talent for actualizing it.

This means nothing. All the article really says is that everybody at ILM has had to sign an agreement not to talk about the possibility of more episodes.
Provided that George Lucas, himself, has had to agree not to discuss the possibility as well, then I have to ask: Isn't this what we've all been hoping for all this time? I, for one, have been praying to my god every night that I wouldn't hear George Lucas talk about any more episodes. - Joe
Lucas: "Search your feelings, you know it to be true."
Me: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
The original three movies were great. I would watch them over and over again. Then episodes 1 and 2 came out and it ruined the whole thing for me. The new movies were so bad that they tained the whole Star Wars experience for me, and now I can't stand to watch even the old ones.
So, what's Lucas up to this time? It's hard to ruin it any more than he already has!
You're not the only one that heard this...it's a pretty well-known rumor
Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had?
I figured I should put one "truth" in there to make the whole thing more legitimate.
Honestly, I'm kind of happy he's going to do it... But I'm also afraid that he's going to keep sucking...
We will still be assaulted by the unavoidable media that will surround it. The only thing worse than the first prequel itself was the onslaught of marketing that it came oozing in on.
Supposedly, Episodes I-III were delayed until the technology existed to do the creature animations. I remember hearing Jurassic Park was in some ways a test of that technology.
Ok, so what's the next frontier? My guess is, 100% digital actors. That is, you could actually have the original Han Solo (or even Alec Guiness!) in a 2010 movie using a digital composite of his 1977 footage. I guess Spiderman II already did more of this than most viewers realized even for close up shots.
I'm taking a wild stab here, but I think the ability to pull this off is arriving quicker than GL expected, and he wants to use Epidsodes 7-9 to be the breakthrough movie, just as Episodes 4-6 were for model/motion photography and 1-3 were for organic CGI.
Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had?
Well, then. If the ratio of good SW movies to bad SW movies decreases to only 3 out of 9, will anybody care about the franchise at all?

George (leaning back to crowd of yes-men): We gotta hire this guy.
Crowd of goons: Yes! (with head bobbing)
One goon trying to impress: Ya-huh! (George's scowl wipes the smile off his face)
You: Yes!
How about a SW fan who mailed $50 to UNICEF last year and went to the midnight show of episode I AND II with his best friend?
Yanno I have no problem with not liking SW, but frankly I'm insulted by your sweeping bullshit generalizations. My favorite charity happens to be UNICEF and my favorite movies of all time are the original trilogy.
Judging the movies is just fine. Judging the fans makes YOU smell like the ass of a baboon.

You're right, although I don't think that was the main subject of the movie. But then again, I may be wrong again. Blade Runner touched on so many things, it's hard to unravel them and isolate the most important.
Spring 1980 SW newsletter(Bantha Tracks):
"BT: At one point there were going to be twelve Star Wars films.
GL: I cut that number down to nine because the other three were tangential to the saga. Star Wars was the fourth story in the saga and was to have been called, "Star Wars, Episode Four: A New Hope." But I decided people wouldn't understand the numbering system so we dropped it. For Empire, though we're putting back the number and will call it Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back. After the third film in this trilogy we'll go back and make the first trilogy, which deals with the young Ben Kenobi and the young Darth Vader.
BT: What is the third trilogy about?
GL: It deals with the character that survives Star Wars III and his adventures."
1995 reprint of the ESB novel:
GL:"From the onset I conceived Star Wars as a series of six films, or two trilogies."
But, of course, nothing's set in stone. Even if it was, George would change it.
And ... BTW ... are the folks at ILM the biggest snitches on the planet or what. They sign a non-disclosure agreement, then tell people that they just signed one. Jeeze, guys. Let us have some mystery in our lives, will ya.

As with the Star Trek Franchise, the Star Wars franchise needs to be shot dead for about 10 years. I'm so sick of "trilogy" movies that the first one is usually good, the rest try to suck the life out of the others to the point you can't stand any of them. When Star Trek revived the "originals" back in the late 70's, and then redid the tv version in the 80's, when the original crew ended, and the TV series ended they should have just stopped for about 5 or 6 years. There isn't any originality in scripts anymore :(
I see lots of people talking about a remade 4,5,6.. i get this funny feeling it's not gonna happen, though.
Even George isn't that stupid.. unless we're talking about King George the Bush...
Ep 2 I think was just about as good as any of 4,5,6. Just in the late 70's / early 80's, no one had ever made movies like this before. Now, there's a lot more of them.
What race of being is a Jar Jar anyway? And how long do they live??

Extrapolating from the first trilogy to the second and through to the third I think we'll be having some real competition for "Manos: The Hands of Fate"
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of childhood memories suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.
Your observations are good and you clearly put your time into really reading the story, so I appreciate your investment.
I will take the best parts and make myself a better writer.
Curious, though, about what you thought of the rest of the story, or if you only read the first chapter or so?
Thanks.

The thing that scares me though, if Lucas did end up doing that, I can just see him writing a hokey script along the lines of Star trek 8 (first contact)
The sending of this message pretty much inconveniences everyone involved.

oh wait...this is hollywood we're talking about. never mind.

Can anyone say milking the cash cow?
What next, a remake of the originals to keep them in line with the 3rd trilogy... Followed by a remake of the prequels to fix the inconsistencies between them and the "revised" originals. Followed by a remake of the new trilogy to make them consistent. Followed by a remake of the "revised" originals to make them consistent with the "revised" new trilogy. Followed by....
I think he's invented the perpetual trilogy...

I watched Star Wars. In 1977.
Haven't seen any of the sequels, or what Lucas seems to be calling 'Prequels.'
I feel it would spoil the memory of the original.
I saw it then, before it was "Part IV". The two sequels I thought boring, the first prequel I saw on DVD, the second I watched half. The original Star Wars had energy, good dialogue and decent acting. The whole concept wasn't original, but didn't pretend to be. It just went downhill from there. Basically, when Luke was the hero it worked. (Though no one could say Hamill was a great actor.) Han as hero was okay, but not very inspiring, after that Vader as hero is just absurd.
Everyone knows: sequels suck. It's news when they don't.
Let's hope that it all takes place post NJO novels involving the Yuuzhan Vong. That way they can use the original actors and actresses to reprise their roles from the original films.
No. In the old Empire, the Jedi Masters dominate the galaxy with the light side of the Force. Annakin brings Balance by helping to annihilate them. The fullfillment of the prophecy is eagerly anticipated by the Jedi Masters because they (and you) don't read the classics and so are unaware of the ironic nature of prophecy.
Help stamp out iliturcy.
I've predicted all throughout the '90's and the--uh .. now's .. anyway--that once Lucas started running out of money, he'd change his mind about not making the 3rd trilogy.
.. he's out of money already?
So
Global warming is neither science, nor politics. It is a religion.
Oh wait...
...episodes 7, 8, and 9 will not suck is if we can manage to put Lucas off the job long enough for him to die.
It's quite literal. Owen Lars orders Luke to wipe their memories in Episode IV. He obviously recognizes C3P0.
I don't think that part is revision. The droids were ALWAYS meant to be in every episode. It was quite literal that everything happens from the droids perspective.
Beyond that, I suspect that no one besides a tight circle know who Vader really is. If everyone in the Rebellion knew that Darth Vader was really Anikan Skywalker from Tatooine, do you think it would be a big mystery. No one knows that "the dark lord" (sidious) is really Palpatine. Everything the Sith does is in secret. Why would the pattern change with Vader????

Lucas stated that he wanted the characters from IV-VI to age.
I personally think that episodes 7-9 will take place when Luke is aged and the Jedi order is largely rebuilt. It will deal with another "new threat" from the Sith and the ultimate victory will be STOPPING them from taking over and wiping them out for good by finally "balancing the force".

Zahn went on in great detail about how the sudden exposure to the force drove the clones mad. Well, I think all that was shot out of the water in episode 2. The cloners have a high reputation of putting out good product. And Lucas has made sure to let us know that the clone troopers will become Storm Troopers.
Anyway, Lucas had previously said he wanted his actors "aged" for episodes 7-9. I personally feel that Luke will be an old man playing the role of Yoda et al in episode 7. New Jedi will be the protagonists along with a new generation of Sith.

There is no such thing as "original music". We all stand on the shoulders of giants (or dwarfs in some cases).
In any case, Williams is the most prolific living composer. His music is amazing and he'll be known as the Mozart of his time.

I think this is where the "balance" thing comes from.
The Jedi train as many as the can while the Sith train only one. They concentrate the power of the darkside and make it more potent.
I don't think that Anikan brings balance to the force by destroying Sidious. I think Qui-Gon was wrong, it's either Luke or his progeny that will bring the balance by learning how to channel the darkside safely.

There are no orginal ideas left, the only thing left is to steal. It isn't being original that matters anyway. It is how well you tell it. Kinda like sex. Orginallity doesn't count. Skill does.

Time for some OLD trivia, from a question asked on the Nickelodion gameshow Double Dare. "Which are the only two characters that will be in all 7 Star Wars Movies?" Ans: R2D2 and C3P0 So yes there has always been an expectation of 7 movise, just long lost trivia.
Let's all just hope that he changed his mind because he realised that he screwed up the *story* for the prequels and thus made a completely redundant Ep1 and more or less redundant Ep2 in the SW universe.
Let's hope he enlists the help of Coppola or Spielberg or somebody else direct the sequels so we can all forget the prequels soon.
Or better yet, Lucas should just talk to Kevin Smith to help write and direct the sequels.
At least that way a lot of virgin fanboys in their 30's can finally experience the equivalent of non-self-inflicted orgasm(s)
blaah !
All Western music is 'ripped off' in that it's all intrinsically based on a set of 12 notes.
However, it is the way these notes are permuted and increased/decreased in pitch that makes music what it is.
Music composing is a lot like writing....
One takes the notes/letters and string them into motives/words. Put a few motives/words together in a noteworthy way and get a leitmotif/phrase. Mix all this stuff up in an interesting way and you can get a complete, extraordinary music score for a set of scenes in a movie like Adventures On Earth from
E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) by John Towner Williams (1932 -- ) which I am listening to as I type this.
On a related note, If Episodes 7-9 are made, they'll have to shoot them like Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy if there is the remote(?) chance that Williams will still be alive to score them as he has the past 5(soon to be 6?) STAR WARS films. I've heard it said that 'Williams is a hack, etc, etc'. If that is the case, why is he (still?) the most sought after film music composer on the face of this earth? Added to that, look at the longevity of his first *GREAT* (most popular at the time) melody: the sharkmotif from Jaws (1975). Used in three sequels (1978, 1983, 1987), it is still in use today as it is used in (the trailer for) Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004)
Should he 'pass on', perhaps the producers will give Jason Graves a chance to 'finish up' as he can and has composed in the Williams style with his Sinister March
Someone should make a sequel to that! DV: Oomfh magh desroy Basketball planet! PL: I can't understand what you're saying? 'Closet cases of the nerd kind' stands alone, however.
Lighten up, Francis.
