Fox Considering a Return of "Family Guy"
wo1verin3 writes: "USA Today is reporting that all is not lost and due to exceptionally strong DVD sales Family Guy may return with as many as 35 new episodes! A DVD set of the show's first 28 episodes, released in April, has sold nearly 1 million copies, making it this year's top-selling TV show and the No. 4 television title ever, according to Video Store magazine."
All I can say is that I hope this go through and that it doesn't suck if it comes back...
Stewie Lives :)
All I gotta say is...its about damn time
Never got into this show. How is it better than the Simpsons or King of the Hill?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
I love the Family Guy! Does that make me sick?
I feel like I just heard they brought Futurama back.
Oh now I feel sad now...
finally they have responded to user demand. This is a great show and I'm glad to see it might just be coming back.
I love that show, I saw every epoisode on Fox that I could catch, and I watch ever one that I can on adult swim. As I remember it fox keep moving the show from night to night. Sometimes showing it sometimes not, it really didn't make a log of sense. It was one of those shows that you couldn't depend it being on. I am glad that Fox is reconsidering.
The grass is only greener, if you don't take care of your own lawn.
what kind of "restrictions" are they gonna place on it?
The show got cancelled more because of controversy than lack of ratings. It's good to see Fox selling out on this due to response (whoddathunkit? Fox?), but I hate for the Family Guy people to sell out too.
In some ways it was good that it went out on top; Look at the Simpsons now; yech.
Glad to know my enjoyment of the DVD sets may have contributed to the show coming back.
- My favorite error message: xscreensaver, running on an old Sparc 5 w/ 8bit color: bsod: Couldn't allocate color Blue
Maybe they could save us all a little time and release them straight to DVD instead of on TV first....If I remember correctly part of the reason they got cancelled was they gave it a shitty timeslot so nobody watched it.
I belong to the ______ generation.

As a proud owner of both volumes, I can say, "FINALLY!" In my opinion, Family Guy is one of the smartest, most subtle shows ever on Television.
Maybe the audience over the commercial sponsors for once. That would be awesome.
Dear Diary: It's my birthday!
Seriously, with Farscape's return and this, all on the same day... wow. Just wow. A day I hope to remember for months.
Futurama was smarter, funnier, and provided lots of could-be "prior art" for future patent lawsuit defenses.
Stupid people make stupid things profitable.

I figured they'd end up on UPN with Buffy and the gang...

Southern boy: I learned from church that if you're good you go to heaven but if you're bad, you go to a place where the dead believe they're still living and they pray for death but death won't come.
Chris Griffin: UPN?
The next show Fox needs to bring back is FireFly. I loved that show..
Especially, that one time, where the captain was standing over this evil killer guy, and he was like "If I let you go, you half to leave me alone, and the evil guy was like "I'll hunt you with my last breath", and the captain guy kicked him and he flew back into this, like, jet intake on his space craft and got all killed.
Yea. That was awesome!
(Seriously, I really did like that show.. =])
bork bork bork!
A funny bone?
Nothing to see here.
Allllll Riiiight !!!!
Now bring back Futurama and all will be forgiven.
In the meantime, thank goodness for Cartoon Network and DVD's.

This is the best news I've seen on Slashdot in a looong time. Now, if we can just bring back Futurama as well.

Here in LA Kevin and Bean, the morning guys on KROQ radio pretty much saved the show TWICE. Listeners rallied around the show and good things happened. Unfortunately, they cancelled it anyway. It's good to see it may be coming back.
My favorite episode is where the dad gets cash for "slavery reparations", and the brother spends the money to make his house look like Pee Wee's Playhouse, complete with Chairy and Globe-y.
That reminds me....I have my Nielsen rating 'diary' due back to them this week. Time to go hunting through the TV guide for all the stuff I like, but haven't watched recently (Futurama and Family Guy, for example...I have all the DVDs anyway, and VCDs for the stuff that hasn't been released yet)
First Farscape, now Family Guy...Now I just need to hear about Futurama returning, and I'll be set!
what the "banned episode" is about? too lazy to google ;-)
It's called "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", and it's about Peter getting into financial trouble and making a wish for a Jew to come save him, because he thinks all Jewish people are financial geniuses. I thought it was relatively tame compared to some of the other things they've done, particularly the "Special People's Games" episode. In any case, the episode is available on DVD Volume 2, and it's a joy to watch.

Sweet! Eheheheheheheheh!
Blast! Damn you, woman!
I can believe that. There were a lot of duds.
But give it a chance. Once in a while there's a brilliant episode. Like the one that ends with Brian and a dying elderly friend experiencing a speeded-up virtual-reality life together. Weird, SF-ish, and oddly touching.
as Quagmire would say... giggadee giggadee...gig-gah-deeee!!!
The baby with the English accent is pure comic genius; the way they combine the mature cynic and infant mentality is utterly amazing. I just don't see anything (even Simpsons or Futurama) that compares with the high points on that show.
I am particularly fond of the scene where he tells Peter to excuse him so he can go find something to strike him with. Classic.

they kept switching the night, and wondered why people didn't watch it. And they put Futurama on at 7 on Sundays, and then ran football late without showing a re run!
I really liked Family Guy, and it made me laugh more than anything but, Futurama is the show I will miss the most. It was really shaping up to be excellent.
"No fair, you changed the outcome by measuring it!" - Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
It certainly wasn't the raciest episode ever, it just dealt with Jewish stereotypes about being good with money, smart, etc. Peter uses the word "Jew" quite a bit so that might be the reason why it ended up getting banned. In the commentary on the DVD even Seth admits he was surprised it didn't get to air.

I'd say the Family Guy fanbase consists of enough of a geek demographic as to make it worth mentioning.

(from the USA Today article) "...new episodes could end up going directly to Cartoon Network."
That would solve the controversy problem since Cartoon Network is a cable channel.
Nerds love TV! What kind of nerd doesn't like TV, especially while programming? In fact... I doubt this AC is a nerd at all! And besides, kinda blatent flamebait isn't it?
relatively short network run may have helped DVD sales, Video Store's Judith McCourt says. "It really speaks to something that had a following, was cut off network TV, and people said, 'What did I miss?' "
I don't think people are saying "hmm, I think I'll check out the family guy." Consumers of the DVD were fans of the show. It sounds like no one wants to admit that fox made a mistake when they cancelled it. Also I wonder if they make the same turn around when they see the strong Firefly DVD sales
Sorry, I accidentally hit Submit instead of Preview. Here's another story on topic. (Please don't troll, it's an unmoderated forum.) The question is, why does Fox consider a return of Family Guy, a show about an average drunk Joe "General Public" Sixpack family, instead of the best science fiction show ever invented? Don't they want the support of intelligent geek/nerd/Slashdot community anymore? I don't understand. Could some "insider" comment on this issue?

What the DEUCE!? That's bloody marvelous! Family guy is a virtual cornucopia of matriarchal matricide. Does anyone know for certain if Stewie's accent is modeled after a South African or some form of British? I guess I'm not worldly enough to tell ;-)
So who's gonna start the online petition first?
Seriously, Family Guy was the best thing to hit FOX since The Simpsons... I am still curious as to why they cut it in the first place, never actually got a straight answer but I would asume that it was due to it's... strong presentation.

It is refreshing to have Fox take time out from their Fair and Balanced broadcasting to bring back a show as cool as this.
That's a Simpsons quote there.

So glad to hear about this. This, along with Buffy and Angel made up my week's worth of television, now I am down to only Angel (although this season is GREAT so far imho).
Way to go FOX, bring it back, don't hesitate!
Family Guy is, hands down, my favorite tv show of all times.
Cartoon Network aired it, not Comedy Central.
Or, there are morons who can learn from their mistakes.
Either way, can't complain.
What they don't know is I can now return all 1M copies I bought and exchange them for Buffy, Angle, Dark Angel, Raiders, Hot Beach Bunnies. What a great way to screw with their statistics! :)
One can hope :)

It suffers from the same crappiness that some Simpsons episodes (esp. newer) suffer from - no subtlety. The best Simpsons episodes have witty humor that's not just plain old slapstick.
That you have to have high sales to be worth of TV air. What about quality? I knew that Family Guy would be a worthy heir of the simpsons as soon as I saw the 1st episode. Whatever happened to giving someone a chance to prove himself? This is like the vicious circle Job needs Experience, Need Experience for Job.

With Farscape returning, maybe we do have some control over this behemoth called television.
Now the just need to announce a reality show where they put the network execs who greenlighted past reality shows on a jungle island and let frustrated TV veiwers hunt them with bow and arrows...
My days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle...
OK, I get Harry Potter. I get The Simpsons. But why do geeks love Family Guy? Is it a Stewie thing?

One man's -1 Flamebait is another man's +5 Funny.
Yes, I quoted your sig. But that's the exact reason. For most people (and likely Fox execs) The Family Guy is pure flamebait. Ever see that episode with the "Diamonds are forever" commercial? 'Nuff said! However, if you're not an overly sensitive person, most of the humor there is a veritable goldmine! Others have said it, but it's worth repeating that TFG has at least triple the wit of any other show packed into its 22 minutes, and I'm being conservative.
Want to improve your Karma? Instead of "Post Anonymously", try the "Post Humously" option.
And explain how matricide can NOT be matriarchal? Or are you just throwing around big words you don't know the meanings of to sound important? Since thins is /. I would guess the latter.
Yeah America's great isn't it? Except for the south.
Well I've got all 3 seasons on DVD and can bring a smile even on the worse days. However more would be cool.

Even when they played it on Cartoon Network, it wasn't completely uncensored. They changed Peter's line "Even though they killed my lord," to "I don't think they killed my lord."
I could F'n cry.
You know what?
"And he's so deliciously evil! ... Gotta get me some of that!"
So they have similar characters. Big deal. The difference is in the style. Family Guy used the 'flashback' joke a LOT, as in: "Oh, they don't let Peter rent from the video store anymore because he kept recording over the tapes. {cut to scene of opening of 'citizen kane', which goes staticy for a second and then it's Peter on a couch, obviously being filmed with a home video camera, saying "It's a freakin sled, okay! Rosebud is a freakin' sled! There, now I just saved you from wasting two boring pointless hours of your life.", and then the movie continues.}
The Simpsons generally tried to stick to the story, and use the plot for the humor, while Family Guy was usually funny *despite* the plot, because the humor was in fast, small snippets.
Don't label something "offtopic" unless you know the topic well enough to tell what's on topic.
Peter: Ok, here's another riddle. A woman has two children. A homicidal murderer tells her she can only keep one. Which one does she let him kill?
Brian: That's... that's not a riddle. That's... that's just terrible.
Peter: Wrong, the ugly one!
South Africans have a distinctly different sound, even though they describe themselves as "sounding a bit British" - like canadians and americans. Stewie sounds rather well-bred, and acts the part; the ep with the girl who speaks Cockney is classic for this..."Ugh, she doesn't speak the language so much as murder it."
Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. - Aldous Huxley
Family Guy was not that incredible. The shwos were all very repetetive, each episode had Peter screwing something up, having a flashback, stewie attempting to murder the mom and then the problem being fixed. EVERY single episode. I'm not saying it isnt funny, it's just not incredible. Ranked after Futurama and Simpsons, but still decent.
No, that distinction goes to Futurama, which has jokes that require you to have a basic understanding of quantum mechanics. Family Guy is up there, though.

I don't know anything about the series, except for having seen it. :) Who made it and will they be able to assemble the team again for the project? :)
We all know that when people work well together magic happens and the sum of their work is greater than the total of what each has put into it.
You cannot expect to get the same result with different people as we have seen on the Simpsons where it was easy to see where Conan O'Brien left and the time it took to bring back the same quality(although some will say that it never did but don't listen to those old school hardcore dudes)... I am starting to ramble, cu
Well, I never watched it on fox but I catch a show everynight at 10:00 pm central on Cartoon Network. I agree, Futurama is one of the best shows ever!!!
This is great news, indeed!!!
Not so long ago I read that Seth was also about to do a direct-to-DVD Family Guy movie. Perhaps FOX changed their minds and wanted whole season instead?
Seth's previous comments from an interview:
"It's all come down to the budget right now. We're hashing it out [...] It would be a direct-to-DVD project."
But wait, there's more. This might still be on the rumor stage, but something about FOX having Seth create another series. Do a Google search! In short:
This series focuses on a family consisting of Stan, a right-leaning C.I.A. agent; his wife; their two kids, including a liberal daughter; a housebound alien named Roger; and a French-speaking goldfish. Like "Family Guy," MacFarlane plans to provide several of the character voices.
It sounds weird, I know. :-)

>gave it a shitty timeslot so nobody watched it.
Which timeslot? I remember being moved at least twice.
Also, let's toss in Futurama while we're at it.
All the cartoon network did is take these gems and give them a consistant timeslot and *gasp* did some advertising. Now Rupert Murdoch et al are all scracting their heads at how much money CN is making and why dreck like "King of the Hill" isn't the cash cow it used to be.
I think you're right, I'd rather just buy the DVD than deal with FoxVision - where the shows you expect to see aren't there! Here, have some football instead.
Hell, if Cartoon Network had Fox-like money they'd be doing this too and with Futurama.
(above message from a Tivo owner and I still couldnt record Futurama because of football, for shame Fox)
or can the Simpsons last forever?
This is not Firefly, this is not Farscape, this is not Star Trek. As far as I'm able to tell, it is a short-lived cartoon that I nobody I know had heard about until today.
Yep it is a cartoon and very well done, IMO. When it comes to Fox standards the length of a runnning means nothing. To some people it ranks up there with Farscape and Star Trek. The only thing I can suggest is that you watch an episode for yourself and make your own decision. Just be ready for some cynical humour.
Of course you are open to your taste.

Id agree with everyone else that Fox really screwed up by canceling the show. Perhaps they just now realized that the DVD is selling like hotcakes and that its getting good ratings on Adult Swim. Either way, it was probably a combination of the ever-changing Fox timeslot and the controversy of the show that got Fox to cancel it in the first place.
There's a difference - South Park "airs" on cable, while Fox will air Family Guy (and did previously) on the _actual_ "air". Broadcast TV is still subject to heavier censorship than the cable channels, each of which enforces their own version of "morality" the way they see fit, with their own code or "S&P" (Standards (hah!) and Practices).

501 Not Implemented
If Fox does re-air Family Guy, we perform a slashdotting of their airwaves.
All of slashdot can tune to Fox when they show Family Guy, and ha! We crash the Fox broadcasting tower... or just the part that tallys the ratings. We get the buffer to overflow and aha! Family Guy sticks around longer than the Simpsons.
Learn something new.
Ok, Family Guy was funny, kinda, in a "more clever than most crap on tv, but still pretty base, 'fart-joke-y' and uninteresting." Never really dug it myself, but to each their own.
OTOH... **Futurama** was smart, insightful, intelligent, hysterical... and suffered from the same mismanagement / incorrect time slot / juggling / etc... try giving it a REAL chance, in a REAL time slot!
Oh. Wait. Juvenile offensive humor. Never mind - that explains why Fox "executives" are reconsidering Family Guy.
The sad part is that they kill great shows to promote ones with far less lasting power.
Indeed. *cough* Firefly *cough*...

Family Guy was ok, but I felt like I needed ADD just to keep up with how much they randomly changed topics.
Now, Futurama, that was a show to savor. You had such a good mix of comedy and drama. You had story arcs, plot, character development, and most scifi inside-jokes than anyone could catch. Just look at "Jurassic Bark": Dolemite references and an ending that genuinely make me tear up, something that a television show has never make me do before.
Cogito ergo sum in Slashdot.
So if we all go out and buy a million copies of Firefly on DVD and all the other promising shows that those dumbfucks canceled they'll bring them back too?
Futurama...
And I even like the Family Guy. But Dammit, more Futurama!!!!
Futurama.
I remember this lovely episode of Millenium, "Somehow Satan Got Behind Me", on of the too-few works of Darin Morgan. There's a segment in it about a Broadcast Standards and Practices censor driven mad by a little dancing devil. The guy's a hoot.
Censor: Unacceptable. If you are going to show a pile of dung, it must be dried dung, not moist.
Censor: No, it doesn't matter that aliens from out of space have no genitalia---they still have groins, and they shouldn't be kicked there. It is unacceptable, revise for cut!
Censor: You will not get away with this! The final scene is gratuitously violent! Aliens would not carry an Uzi! They are a superior race and they would not carry or utilize automatic weapons! I will not approve this! I am Broadcast Standards and Practices!
Heck, you can even get the episode off ed2k. (The show doesn't air much anymore; most of it was apparently crap.)

The Weinstein Episode is among the less offensive (at least of the actually offensive ones, since most are pretty tame by my standards) episodes they made. The worst moments (in addition to 'Ready, Willing, and Disabled' mentioned in parent) are the end of 'The Son Also Draws' (season 1), where much of the family rattles off a set of stereotypes about Indians (American), Mexicans, Swedes, and Canadians (although they disclaim all but the last one with an old NBC 'The More You Know' ad); 'Dammit Janet' (season 2) where Stewie gets naked at a daycare and climbs in with a little girl; 'And the Wiener Is' (season 3), all about Chris' massive penis. Most of the episodes are just funny, but those are offensive and funny at the same time. Maybe the censors just didn't like the depiction of Optimus Prime as a Jew.
Oh my god, this is the best news ever, had I known that there was a possibility for new episodes based on DVD sales I would of bought 3 or 4 copies... -tiz

I posted this in another thread, but maybe you'll like this equation better:
Last X episodes of Family Guy > Last X episodes of The Simpsons
Where X = Number of Family Guy episodes
As the article clearly stated, not every show with a cult following can be brought back, and for good reason.
The cast of Family Guy is all created, so it can just "be drawn back into existence." The cast of Firefly has gone on to other projects (or at least have tried to). There's a chance not all of them will want to return, a chance some of them can't return due to other commitments, a chance their physical appearance has changed too much, etc.
The show is recent enough, though, that an attempt to return isn't TOO out of the question; but I wouldn't hold my breath. I liked that show a lot, and I'm not much into scifi.
IANAL, but I play one on
Don't you mean "Giggidy Giggidy!" ?
Actually the diamonds parody ad was around on the internet. I'm told by friends that it pre-dates Family Guy, but I'm not certain. Anyhow, the Family Guy version was much, much better simply because it was far classier and well... it had sound and motion.
The one failing of the show, I think, is that sometimes they just can't let go of a joke. I remember the sequence when Peter go into a brawl with a giant chicken ... it went on for a good 3-5 minutes. That's entirely too long for a simple humorous interlude. There was also the letter that Stewie wrote Brian after he'd left for England to live on the set of that English show. It took over a minute to read the thing, and it just lost its humor after 15 seconds anyway. There are tons of other examples of what should be small interludes being dragged out to fill 30 seconds or more throughout the series, but the rest of the show is hilarious enough to make up for it. Whenever God makes an appearance, it's always funny.
... Kaaaaaaaren!

I'd be happy with a radio show of Stewie just saying stuff. Anything. Can't get enough of that evil little bastard.
Better yet, the Stewie and Brian show. Who needs Howard Stern?
Look at the replies this story is getting on slashdot. That might help you realize that Family Guy really is "stuff that matters".
You think most people give a fuck about SCO anymore?
...or, "Swehehehet"
I love it when Brian the dog says stuff like "Make me a vodka stinger with a whiskey back, and step on it!" :-p
I'm zipping through the DVDs fast and loving it. Far better than any Simpsons past season 7 (IMO the old Simpson episode guide ends about when the series gets bad). I'm chuckling thinking about when they inherit the mansion and Stewie tormets the servants, especially when he orders two of them to fight to the death for his amusement *lol*
Actually, the important question is (was) "will they ever bring back Family Guy". Now that that one's been answered we can move on to the less important question like the one you mentioned.
My GOD!!! That chicken sketch was the most action packed cartoon scene I have ever seen. Right near the end when Peter says, "Chicken, gave me a bad coupon...", and it starts up again... Just thinking about that makes me laugh but I digress. I think that is one of Family Guys strengths. They keep going with stuff, and it really has an effect on me.
Ditto
I keep seeing these ads for a new line up on adult swim, with shows that in my opinion do not match FG.
Has anyone else heard about these?
Adam Sane sanity is a dirty job, but somebody has to do it.
I know it doesn't follow the theme of this thread, but my favourite quote is one of Stewie's:
:)
"Now make yourself useful and wipe my butt. Circular motion, one finger, and DON'T YOU LOOK AT ME!!!"
Carpe Cerevisi - Seize the Beer
Its coming on CN soon..I think the ad said 20 something check your tivos
CAN I GET A HELL YEAH!!
75% of all statistics are made up!
How is King of the Hill still on the air and Family Guy not? I've never once heard someone cheer when King of the Hill starts, mostly i just hear groans. But Family Guy is guaranteed to bring enjoyment simply at the start of the title song.
I find it interesting that in the Simpsons DVD commentaries, (I beleive it was) Al Jean took a number of shots at Family Guy for ripping off thier style of nonsensical cut aways. After hearing that I went back to re-watch a few FG's and man he was right. Good show, but in retrospect somewhat derivative.
I miss Fastlane, which lasted all of a season on FOX, and I was really disappointed when I found out it had been cancelled. It had cool special effects, good music, and decent plots. It was total escapist TV, but it was GOOD escapist TV. Like Futurama, Family Guy, Greg the Bunny, and a ton of other FOX shows, they moved it around and took it off and on until everyone forgot about it.
I have blog like everyone else
... or when Peter banged his shin and sat for a good thirty seconds going "ssstt, aaahhhh, ssstt, aaahhhh". Except, I disagree with you -- moments like that are hilarious! It just shows how much balls the producers had that they would allow 30 seconds of what was essentially dead air.
Here is the contact E-Mail askfox@foxinc.com ================== Bring Back the Best Animated Cartoon!!!! (after the Simpsons, of course)
If Fox (fucking Fox ) can figure out that they made a mistake and bring back Family Guy after cancelling it, then maybe, just maybe, the SciFi idiots can finally pay for the fifth season of Farscape they promised.
I've bought each and every boxed season set of Farscape so far... where's my goddamn fix?
This sig is part of your complete breakfast.
Yes! I was just watching Family Guy last night on Adult Swim and was thinking that new episodes would be so cool!

Don't listen to them- I totally said Whoo Hoo! When I read this. In fact, I busted a gut laughing when I saw your post, just after sent a message to my bud about this with that as the subject :-)

The availability of tv series on dvd has a nice side effect in that by buying the dvd, you're casting a vote with your money that you like the show, which probably translates a lot better into profit than if you simply watched the show on tv (and the ads). Therefore, a smaller segment of the population can now keep a show going if they're willing to buy it on dvd. This works particularly well for cartoons, since you don't need to worry about aging actors as much (only voices). As more people purchase DVR's and stop watching ads, this may make the television market more like the radio market in the sense that show producers will use broadcast tv to sample a show to the public in an effort to sell dvds, much like music producers use radio airplay to get people to buy cds.

Yeah, I know I can download it, but a hi-res version would certainly sell.

it's about Peter getting into financial trouble and making a wish for a Jew to come save him, because he thinks all Jewish people are financial geniuses. I thought it was relatively tame compared to some of the other things they've done, particularly the "Special People's Games" episode.
How many studios are owned by "special people"?
How many by jews?

Might just be the people I've talked to, but I've never met someone whose watched the show, and didn't think it was hilarious! The thing that people always say is "why was it cancelled?"
Is it just me or has TV been a major dissapointment these last few years. Family Guy has been one of those gems that has actually brought me back to the tv (or PC in the case of the DVDS). I think it would be a huge mistake for Fox not to give the green light for more eps. In either case here are my favorite episodes:
1) And the weiner is
2) The thin white line
3) Brian does hollywood
4) Peter Griffin: Husband, father....brother?
5) He's too sexy for his fat
6) E Peterbus unum
7) Family Guy viewer mail #1
8) If I'm dyin, I'm lyin
9) I am peter hear me roar
10) Da Boom
but anyway, let's face it there are lots more
funny eps. of family guy (and some lame one's too). All I know is that the brand of humor that Chris McFarlan brings is a welcomed change to humdrum tv.

Well, it looks like FOX has finally began to rue the day they took Family Guy off the air. Hopefully we will once again be viewing Stewie's childlike antics and crazy schemes. good... good...
Forecast for tomorrow: A few sprinklings of genius with a chance of DOOM!
It was one of the funniest cartoons ever, and they dicked it around. Cancelled it, brought it back. Now its on tuesdays, no now its wednesdays. You could barely catch an episode. And then they wouldnt air When You Wish Upon a Weinstein season finale because it was too offensive. Cartoon Network aired it though. Screw Fox. Bring the new episodes right to Cartoon Network where they belong. The only downside is people without cable will miss out. But I still think its the right thing to do.

What, you mean the rating system they used was completely worthless? What? You mean that Fox destroyed their own show? What? You mean that in spite of Fox being incompetent, they've had absolutely wonderful shows? What? You mean Futurama? Family Guy? didn't suck?
The executives at Fox are brain dead.
P.S. For the record, I tried watching that horrible show called Firefly. On the rare occation that I was able to watch it, in spite of Fox's best efforts, I must say, the show was horrible! I'm sorry, but cowboys in space is stupid. Seems I stand corrected. Fox actually did something right! Go figure.
I know some people went crazy over that show...why? Help me out here? Everything I saw was bad writing, bad stories, and hoakie anachronisms in space. I really enjoy good sci-fi. And generally, I can watch just about anything. Will someone please fill me in on what they thought was good about that horrible show? Please? I feel like I'm missing something....but my brain says I'm not.
Stewie was dealing with a bully from the neighborhood in his own megalomaniacal way, capturing the bully and tying him up in the basement.
Lois looks down the stairs...
"Stewie, what are you doing down there?"
"We're playing house, Mother..."
"But why is that boy all tied up?"
"Um... Roman Polanski's house."
Now that's funny.
You are in error. No-one is screaming. Thank you for your cooperation.
To quote the article:
But ratings faded, and the show ended with a whimper early last year.
Didn't this article enrage anyone else? Ok, perhaps enrage is a bit strong of a word... but it sure chaps my hide when networks say total bullshit like this.
Ratings faded? What the hell are they talking about? Everyone I know and over heard speaking about Family Guy loved it. I've never heard anyone say they didn't like it, if they had seen it and actually watched a full episode or two.
The people they get to define their "ratings" really piss me off. Trailer park, white trash, Rossane Barr watching morons are the aparent demographic of Fox and most other networks. I know I'm not saying anything new to anyone here... but it still pisses me off. They cancle all the good shows (John Doe, Fire Fly, Family Guy, etc...) but they leave the dross on TV? I mean really... who the F*ck wants to watch stupid shows like "The OC" or "A minute with Stan Hooper" or... wait! Better yet, lets watch "Joe Millionaire."
F*ck you Fox. I'm going to go set my Tivo so I can skip your commercials and watch the few shows I do watch ('70's show!) on your network, all the while, I will be laughing like a pirate, because I am leeching off your bread and butter while not giving any payback. Yes... I will be essentially pirating your shows, because I don't watch your commericials to fund more stupid, mindless, moronic shows.
HO HO HAR! And a bottle of RUM matey! I feel righteous in my TIVOISTAISM! Stick it to the man!
Ok, I'm done now... but seriously. Who the hell are the demographic audenience that Fox uses to gauge whether a show is good or not? Because it sure as hell isn't *educated* white or black America.

Subduction leads to orogeny
Just to let you know Family guy costs about 1-1.3 million an epsioid.
But for FOX to put the show on the air the best thing you can do is to buy both dvd sets. That is the only reason why they are considering bringing it back!!!
I remember watching that show in Holland as a kid! That show was just phenominal! Every few years I make an attempt to track them down on video or DVD, but so far I haven't had too much luck... I did hear about a year ago (last time I did that search) that they were showing the show again somewhere in Canada... I hope to find all the episodes on DVD someday...

I guess I'll take the bait on what I'd call a 50 percent chance of flamebait. The "insane reason" that the FCC is allowed to censor broadcast television is that the frequencies are ours. NBC doesn't own the rights to their frequency. We gave it to them.
In return for giving it to them, we require some things. We require that they follow "common decency", which, as you'll note, changes. Lucy and Ricky, Rob and Laura, and countless other couples weren't allowed to share a bed because a plurality of people thought that was improper. You couldn't see Al Bundy on the toilet, and for that matter, the toilet flushing on "All In the Family" was controversial. When things become mainstream, usually through the efforts of some or another groundbreaking show getting away with it, everybody is allowed to do it.
We also require that stations slot a certain amount of time to public service announcements (PSAs). We require time for news, and we require time for matters of national interest, like the State of the Union. We require programs that are suitable for children to watch to be aired when children might be watching.
If you think requirements like these are "insane", then I'll call you what you are: an idiot. Sure, we all disagree with some of the FCC's rulings. Many of us think that the "7 Dirty Words" that George Carlin referenced are words that every child above the age of 10 has heard. But as bad as primetime TV is, imagine a world with no FCC regulations on what can and can't be aired over public airwaves. The FCC has a very good reason for what they do, even if they're misguided at times.
Firefly sucked compared to what it replaced. Dark Angel was better. WAY better then Firefly.
Man, you gotta be drunk!
You mean the post apocalyptic show where a giant EMP destroyed all electronics/civilisation and EVERYONE has a pager? Computers all over the place? That show?
Where "old run down technology" is a brand new SUV with mud smudged on it?
Where they had "original" characters like freakin' Vincent from that 80's Beauty and the Beast show? He looked exactly like him had the same damn personality and the same powers! (Yeah, the beast is really a big softy, REALLY original!)
And don't forget, cat DNA means you can jump 20 feet in the air! It sure does!
Oh, and the hot star goes in heat...real classy.
What else...hey, her borrowed-womd mother looked exactly like her! Even though she had 0 relation to the baby she was carrying (not her egg)!
Dark Angel was cheap crap. It was the movie Soldier made into a TV show, with a weaker storyline and a hot chick to compensate for the total lack of originality, effort, logic, or good sci-fi. It was a festival of cliches and borrowed ideas, badly executed.
BUT, The star was hot. Really hot.

The diamond one was a classic.
My favorite one and one I thought was gonna get them in trouble was the one with a jew and palestinian with identical features except for the funny head gears and the guy says that he cant tell them apart, that they look the same to him!
I was stunned they were still on the air next week!
>TFG has at least triple the wit of any other >show packed into its 22 minutes, and I'm being >conservative.
And those capsules or flashbacks they did really helped pack it in. You know how you watch a Simpsons and the first ten minutes usually never have anything to do with the last 10 and how its hard for them to 'turn on a dime' with their storylines?
Family Guy could just skip any time consuming segue with a sidebar joke when htey felt like it and then continue the storyline as if nothing happened.
You can have a linear storyline but pepper it with
jokes which didnt interfere with it or even have anything in common with it.
Its not like they had to write anything much to lead into or out of the diamond comercial.
So it definitely is the writing but the way the show was set-up, you could fit in a lot more jokes that didnt need a build up. That I believe made it that in the 20mins they could

Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits.
My god a world where TV stars swore just as bad as mommy and daddy. That would be terrible.
Despite all the prohibitions of the FCC, people seemingly have been using these words since well before radio. They are making things worse because they make these words seem more taboo then they actually are.
Seriously, Tits!!!! As in, tits on a cow. Oops, did that make it worse????
I know that some people object to those words. I myself recoil from them. But deep down I realize that this is simply cultural conditioning. To somehow think that we are above and beyond Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits is kinda silly.

Uhh... like the Simpsons weren't somehow derivative of half a billion different movies, TV shows, and musical groups. Derivative because of nonsensical interludes? Hello! Monty Python, anyone?
'Standards' in computing only impress those who are impressed by things like 'standards'.
Good: As mentioned, when it's on, the laugh-per-minute meter is untouchable. It does blend low and high-culture very well, taking shots at everything and not being pretentious or sleazy. Bad: Frankly, the show can be creepy if you watch quite a few in a row. The stuff between Stewie and Lois is always threatening to cross the line, and the show is very nihilistic overall. If you are a big Simpsons fan, you're going to be annoyed at all of the characters, gags and situations that were lifted wholesale from that show. Unlike the Simpsons, Family Guy never had the chance/desire to give the characters any depth so if the rapidfire gags aren't working, the shows tend to bomb pretty hard.
I think Peter and the rest of the 'Family Guy' gang would be perfectly happy whorring for cash. That what makes them the perfect show for Fox ;-)
-------- -------- Support Wesley Clark for president!!!
That's great news. If FOX can do that for Family Guy, how about the old favorite M*A*S*H?!? Of course they'd have to do it all CGI, but it could happen... :-D
Actually I find this something that the Family Guy people has understood completely and manages to pull off extremely well.
:)
At first these interludes seem on the bizarre side but the more 'FG' you consume, the better these little side activities become.
The racoon from the deep south episode is mentioned in a nother post and is a very good example of this.
Family Guy is hands down the funnies cartoon ever produced. Bar none.

With all the DVD copying around, that $1m in sales probably translates to 1 or 2 million potential viewers.

Canceling the Family Guy has to be one of the biggest mistakes in TV history. At the same time, placing it at 8PM on Thursdays up against *FRIENDS* of all shows (which happens to be the #1 rated show as far as viewers go) has to be another one of the biggest mistakes. Even then, it clocked in about 5 million viewers, which is about enough to keep it going, as some other shows FOX kept around had those sort of ratings (I mean come on, 5 million when you're against Friends' 22 million ain't bad).
Family Guy is, without a doubt, one of the best animated comedies (one of the best comedies, period) that has ever graced television. It is consistently funny, and has a unique style of humor that can't be found in any other show. I happen to work at a video rental store, and whenever we play a Family Guy DVD, most people comment on how great the show is. The majority of those people also have never even seen and/or heard of the show until it came to Cartoon Network. Go figure. I would be extatic if Family Guy came back with new episodes.
Damn, I'm so late to this thread.
I had to post to say how excellent Family Guy is. I don't think any other TV show has made me laugh so hard and so consistently.
It's never been broadcast domestically here in the UK, but all I needed was to see 2 or 3 episodes and I bought all 3 seasons on DVD. If they do commission even 1 more season, I'll be a happy bloke.
Favourite scene? Too many to remember, but Death cracks me up when he tries to drive home drunk. Goes something like this:
[Death staggers out of a bar and gets into his car. Takes a deep breath.]
Death: C'mon Death, you can do this.
[Pulls out directly into the side of a stationary police patrol car.]
My god, man, how many more years of the Korean War do you need? The show lasted four times longer than the actual war in the first place.
I am Sartre of the Borg. Existence is futile.
Another great example: watch the final episode of Blackadder sometime. You don't even notice the transition from a comedy mostly about farting and eating boiled rats to something truly sad until it's over.
"Seven Deadly Sins? I thought it was a to-do list!"
Plus it was just so real. Anyone that as a kid or adult has banged their shin on something has had that same experience.
Thats what made it funny to me.
"(I) have this unfortunate condition that causes me not to believe a single thing any politician says when a mic's on.
A sense of humor?
Nahh, I wouldn't say that. I have seen some funny parts in this show, but it just doesn't do it for me. And before you think "he doesn't get it", I do. I just don't think it is that funny or clever. Sure, I laughed a few times, but I just don't care about anything in that show. I know, it is just a cartoon, but they still have to do some kind of character development. Futurama did this from the first episode, almost in a creepy way. It was like there wasn't any "break-in" episodes, it just hit the ground running. The Simpsons has pretty much grown-up, and can still (surprisingly) make me laugh in every episode. I find that I like the re-runs of episodes better than the first time I see them, but I am not sure why.
That is my over-analysis of The Family Guy. The simple analysis is I just don't care about it, and the humor is too straightforward. It seems like it is just a couple of one-liners that they built an episode around. Ho-hum.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
Beginning of episode (I can never remember which one) stewie is rifling through the fridge, suddenly he see's what he's looking for and says "Great! Sunny-D!". I almost cried I was laughing so hard. It's the little things that make Family Guy a VERY close second to the simpsons. I own both DVD sets and they are awesome, watching McWhateverhisnameis do the voices is hilarious. Plus you cannot beat Mila Kunis (?sp) replacing the original Meg. I wonder why?
It just shows how much balls the producers had that they would allow 30 seconds of what was essentially dead air.

...for downloading the dvd rips. gonna go buy the dvd's tonight. perhaps even the futurama dvds (yeah i downloadeds those too).
this is the best reason i've ever heard to not download!
just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand!
Now if they could just bring back Firefly and Futurama I'd be very happy.
ChodaBoy
- The preceding statement is the product of a deranged mind and the sole property of the voices in my head.
Hopefully not Fox...keep it on CN where we can enjoy the show as it was intended...I fear that Fox will force the creators to tone it down...you can't beat scenes in episodes like "Death is a bitch" where Peter tells Death (Norm Macdonald) that he was on the Junior Varsity track team and Death says "I caught Flo Jo"...hilarious albeit morbid...that was the moment I got hooked to FG.
What about Futurama....
I would love for Futurama to make a comeback, a better timeslot might help it's ratings also...
if common sense was common, wouldn't everyone have it?
Fox Television Entertainment Group chairman Sandy Grushow said a decision is expected soon and called the series a late-blooming phenomenon that may have aired before its time.

Denis Leary or someone had a bit that went as follows:
JFK: Dead. Robert F. Kennedy: Dead. Ted Kennedy: Still alive. WHY, GOD, WHY?
And I can't help but notice:
Futurama: Canceled. Family Guy: Canceled. King Of The Hill is entering its seventh goddamn season - WHY, GOD, WHY???
I have never understood why King Of The Hill is still on the air. Watching the Simpsons end and King Of The Hill begin is like leaving Disney World and walking across the street to a wake. Fox is stupid. They don't deserve the new Family Guy episodes. Put them on Comedy Central where the executives know gold when they see it. Here's a time-traveling thought experiment: Put Family Guy between the Simpsons and X-Files on Sundays, and instead move King Of The Hill to a different weeknight every three weeks like they did with Family Guy, and then see whether people even remember King Of The Hill these days, let alone buy a million four-DVD sets of it.

Do you know how little time it actually takes a voice cast member to do a show? Watch the Inside the Actor's Studio with the Simpsons cast... they say they only go in for a few hours a week and never actually work "together." They all have multiple other projects going, and the Simpsons is pretty much a side project (that pays really well).
Adding the very small time commitment to the fact that there are only about three people who do voices on the show (one of whom is the show's creator, and he does three of the main characters), I don't think it will be very hard to get the show up and running.
So fuck you, you fucking fuck.
IANAL, but I play one on
...of the good shows that Fox has had over the years that they replace with crap.
Futurama
Married With Children (ok, this one had run its course)
Andy Richter Controls the Universe (hit and miss here)
X-Files, of course (yes, yes, I know...)
It's good to hear that I'm not the only one left on the planet who can't stand the "reality" shows that seem to populate the channel these days.
I'll bet this question ahs already been asked, but I didn't see the answer. If Family Guy is No. 4 top seller, then what are the first three?
That style has been adopted by a host of shows. The Critic, Malcolm in the Middle, Scrubs, and probably plenty of others that I haven't seen (what's the one with the skinny lawyer chick?).
Maybe it's derivative but it's funny and it works. The Simpsons started it but now the masses have it.
