Longhorn's Offical Name is Windows Vista
UnkleAsdf writes "The folks at Redmond have long pointed to the user interface of the next generation Windows release as one of its major selling points. Now, it appears Microsoft has chosen an official name for Longhorn with just that in mind. Enter: Windows Vista. Microsoft is expected to make an official announcement early Friday morning." From the article: "Microsoft has also registered domains to go along with the newly christened Windows, including windowsvista.com. The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year."
Asta lavista, Alta Vista. You have fewer lawyers.
then the view thus far is crappy.
Does it run linux?
Windows Vista, that doesn't sound quite right. I think they're running out of names.
Windows Vista in latvian would be Windows Chicken, now that is very lucky for us latvians.. "I hate chicken!"
Okay, fine, so they picked marketing name. Now what version is it really? Eg W2K was 5.0 and XP was 5.1. So is this 5.2, or 6.0, or what?
Which only makes sense, because I'm sure it'll be delayed...ooooh...me thinky long time.

"The folks at Redmond have long pointed to the user interface of the next generation Windows release as one of its major selling points."
There seem to be a few surplus characters in that sentence. The words "one of" and that final "s" seem to have been typed by accident.
My other processor is big-endian.
Instead of all this R&D why don't they release a bew theme for XP. Save a lot of messing around.
Could have new widgets that ate memory, CPU, disk space and to phone home.
Cheaper and faster than how they're doing it now.
Perfect.
it's a blue bright blue Saturday hey hey
Despite all the disspointing announcements lately about features being dropped from Longhorn, at least it still had a cool name. Now that's gone too.
I don't like that name. I think Longhorn is far better.
How abbreviation of Windows Vista will look like?
WV, V, MSWV?
..they dared not name it after a year. That would have been like 3drealms naming Duke Nukem 1998 instead of Duke Nukem forever.
The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year.
And why is that, exactly? Couldn't it be that they made up many names, selected, say, 10, and registered the domain names to prevent leaking of the name and it being registered by someone else ?
Sounds like a very small price for such a big risk, so I don't see any reason why registration in March should indicate that they actually decided to go with that name at that date...

With a name like Longhorn, they were kind of asking to be re-"branded"
Pardon my ignorance, but could someone tell me what Vista means and how Microsoft relates it to their new OS? NT was New Technology I believe, and that was fitting (well, when it was released anyway) and XP stood for experience (yea, it's some experience alright...) so what's the correlation this time?
According to the article, 'The word 'vista' defined means "pleasing view."'. That is not correct. Vista simply means "view" or "sight" and could apply to good or bad, pleasing or displeasing. It remains to be seen which it turns out to be...
This will be great for Apple's marketing division. In the new "switch" commercials, they could get Schwartzeneggar to say "Hasta la Vista, Windows!"

It seems odd that Microsoft are sticking to their decision to abandon year references in their product names (well, excluding the miserable sales-pitch that was Windows 2003). I think they'll lose upgrades over this--not everyone knows that Windows Vista is better than XP (Vista implies a hands-off approach, XP implies that you're part of an experience), but everyone knows that Windows 98 is better than 95, simply because of mandatory obsolescence enforced by the naming scheme.
In portuguese vista means view, so we have "vista da janela" or "windows view". Funny indeed.
So that's what Microsoft did with the 5.8 B$ research budget - looking for new Windows release name :-)
You mean XP = experimental :D

She's built like a steak house, but she handles like a bistro....
After dumpster diving outside Redmond, I managed to come up with this list of alternate names compiled by Microsoft's marketing team:
For the launch of Windows 95, Microsoft used The Rolling Stones, for Windows XP it was Jay Leno. For the launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft will use a celebrity guest that represents the future of the product: Microsoft is considering David Caruso, Shelley Long, John Travolta, or Kevin Costner...
Will the beautiful landscape renderer Vista Pro be sued to change their name?

one of the things they're waiting for...is a platform. AMD is solid and at 64 bit, but Intel is MS's ol' buddy. Longhorn was already supposed to be out by now, but...Intel doesn't have a good enough 64bit platform to offer it. That's the wait.
Probably 'Nova'.
WebCT has a widely used CMS for on-line courses named Vista http://webct.com/software/viewpage?name=software_v ista
which has been out for at least a few years. WebCT is used heavily in Higher Education for on-line course delivery.
I heard that they're also planning on relaunching their Passport service as Windows Visa.
I'll turn into a supernova and burn up everything. Well I'll turn into a black little hole and you'll turn into string.
Asta la Vista baby!
And it crashed.
That's a different sector, and I think that means it's ok to use the same name there.
But there are a lot of software packages called 'Vista' out there. I wonder how trademark registration resolves all that.
None of the packages are an OS?
So the future Windows will be called Vista. But where is the news that really matters?
I want to know what happened to WinFS, Avalon, Indigo and all the other revolutionary tech that Long... Vista supposedly would offer. How much has been cut and how much does Vista really differ from XP? How much will Vista cost?
Somehow, Vista doesn't seem to be, as Bill Gates once said, the the most important release since Windows 95. Let's hope Vista is more than a new color scheme and fancy GUI components.
Oh I think they will make a deal with Microsoft. If they agree to change their name, they'll probably even get a free X-Box, and maybe a couple of games.
I'll probably be modded down for this...
NT = Neanderthan technology :D
All these posts, and no-one has said anything about the word "Offical" yet?
OK, I'll take a stab then:
- I think the "ic" was put in by accident.
OR
- from Bill Gates' point of view, there can be only one "I" in the OS world.
That's the best I've got I'm afraid - my caffeine levels are definitely too low...

It just sounds clunky and trite to me. How many times has the word vista been used in marketing already? I think even xp2 would have been a better name. Oh well, maybe with enough exposure and marketing, Vista will start sounding better to me:)
Nuts. Somebody has already registered windowsvistasucks.com. Registered three days ago, even!
I guess Windows 2012 just doesn't have that "ring" to it.
Windows 64.
After all, this new version of Windows is likely going to be designed mostly to support the x86-64 CPU instruction set that AMD pioneered and Intel has begun to use, so this sets a break with the 32-bit past of previous Windows versions.
Well, shit, XP was more stable than "Windows Me".
I've upped my standards, so up yours.
I love that name.
When I think Vista I think of a great open landscape, pretty but devoid of anything substantial.
Curiously, Merriam-Webster defines vista as "a distant view through or along an avenue or opening," which isn't really that much better.
And in related news, Microsoft announced it was suing the following cites/towns/counties for trademark infringement:
Vista, CA
Vista, MO
Vista, FL

That Microsoft should stop calling their OS "Windows".
It's a tired name, now synonymous with spyware, virii, headaches, problems, lack of security and worse. If nothing else, they can market it a lot more easily...

I remember when LongHorn went into a major beta and the illegal versions went around my college campus, this was over 2 years ago, and then the first leaks happened 4 years ago. At least I hope that means that beta testing is taking a good amount of time. But if some reports are right, (And there's no reason to doubt them) they are also adding more needless features or extra security to deprive us of digital freedom.
Of course let's all take a moment to remember Windows ME, the last time Microsoft tried to force a specific feature on us. I know personally I'm not upgrade, and likely most offices won't as XP is working fine... for now.

There was a little discussion of this on Linux Medical News http://www.linuxmednews.com/1122038173 about a possible trademark conflict with VistA the Veterans Administration healthcare software: '...Probably not. VistA is currently trademarked by a modem company, OpenVistA is trademarked by Medsphere, VistA by itself as healthcare software is up for grabs, as is VistAOffice. Albeit it has been noted that "vista" has a meaning as an English word (my choice is Volunteers In Service To America) it actually means a lot of things in Spanish and has a very strong Spanish feeling in it.
I've been intrigued for a while for the increasing use of Spanish words in every day speek. Is MS name choice a deliberate attempt to make windows cooler? (well, obviously that is what all the branding thing is about but I meant asking, is there a coolness factor associated with Spanish or Latino things?). Are they trying to be sexier for Spanish speakers? Or is just because how it sounds?

All that registering the domain in late March tells you is that the name was considered a possibility at that time, not that a final decision had been made to use it. I wouldn't be surprised if they tossed around several names and registered all of them as soon as they thought of them.

Why bother renaming it at all? We've all been calling it Longhorn for years now... it's not like Chicago, where that was an internal name that wasn't often used outside of Redmond. Longhorn this and Longhorn that have been the standard phrases for years in every trade rag... and they're throwing it all away to call it "Vista"... eeeyyyuuuuchhh...
The only possible reason I can think of for it is that they think Longhorn is associated with too much bad publicity, and they want a fresh start. Except, I haven't seen that much "bad" said about Longhorn... so, I guess Bill was bored recently, and decided to let his youngest name the new OS.

I haven't seen a longhorn beta but I'm sure there's a version number in there somewhere. Version numbers aren't friendly to end lusers....remember that since 2000 the industry has been in a steady decline due to the necessary fluffing (for lack of a better term) of end lusers.

There's a story this morning about how today in Atlanta there's an event called "MGB 2005" with the tagline "Going Beyond," that features several major tracks being presented to Microsoft managers and partners from throughout the world. But apparently the name "Microsoft" is not in evidence on any of the event's signage or collateral relating to the meeting. Anyone know what the exact scoop is on that? Is this where the "Vista" name was cooked up?
Now we need to go and change all the jokes saying will it run Longhorn to will it run Vista.
The real name will be Windows 2005 FogHorn.
I used to have a better sig than this, but I got tired of it
But, I wanted socialized health insurance!
I thought for sure they were going with Windows ME2!
A few years ago, "Vista" was actually one of the proposed new titles for a corporate intranet site I was working on. It came from a committee of middle managers. We shot it down because it didn't mean much, didn't communicate anything about the site it would've been attached to, and wasn't easily "branded" into variations on the theme. (Tiny symbols to remind people of the "vista" didn't come to mind for the end of articles, for one example. No space-efficient "Vista" logo elements.) The idea of providing a way to see the overall "landscape" of the company was the idea, but that struck us as so generic to Web sites generally that we thought it wasn't useful.
(But then, really, "Panther" and "Tiger" are just cool names according to Steve J's 12-year-old self... Easier to brand, with fur coat patterns and so on, but no more meaningful.)

and of course the name "vista" they are really going to promote the translucent features and the eyecandy.

Most of the comments seems to be humorous jabs at what Vista means in other languages. I don't see what's so incredibly funny about what Vista means in sanskrit or whatever. Ah well. In Norwegian, a "dott", which is pronounced like dot in english, means an imbecile. ;)
Most Windows have had 2 numerals following it (XP, ME). This will be better known as Windows VI. VI being the first two letters of Vista and in Roman numerals, 6 because this is Windows NT 6.0.

What's that view the cute couple is looking at?
It's Operation Pengu-in Pengu-out, of course! Windows Vista: "The water runs red in 2006!"
MS does not endorse killing entire colonies of penguins with depth charges. However, it simply doesn't think they should be allowed to breed for free and in the open for all to see (think of the children!), and is humanely protecting other marine life from the terrorist penguins... by blowing them up.

Well, there is/was the Mitsubishi Pajero. "Pajero" (in Spanish - at leat in Spain) is someone who masturbates a lot. There, and in other countries, it is now called Mitsubishi Montero.
I'm sure it did. Unfortunately that's not why this subject keeps popping up.
"Nova" is not a common spanish word. You probably thought of "nueva". In spanish "nova" is an astronomical word meaning an exploding star (as in English). "No va", on the other hand means "doesn't move" to any spanish speaker. Also, native spanish speakers leave precious little space between words.
Actually, the equivalent situation is more like a car named a "nogo", where (I made the following up) a nogo is a English word of Hebrew origins describing a small lump of hardened flesh occuring in your left deltoid.

So, can a company like MSFT basically name their products whatever they like without fear of copyright just becase they have the $$$ and lawyers to kick anyone else down? I'm sure there are plenty of companies or products with close ties to 'vista' and software. http://vistasoftware.com/ is just the first one that Google turned up for me.

What want to know is when are we going to get the definitive version of Windows?
When they have competition that requires them to do so.
Microsoft's only possible approach is to make Windows Vista good enough that people feel they want to upgrade and no better. How do they justify to their shareholders that they spent X million dollars on this feature and they didn't really need to and that they'll need to spend Y million more on a new feature they haven't thought of for the next release. That's risky and expensive.
They can leverage their monopoly position and only add just enough new features to excuse a new release and they'd be foolish to do otherwise.
It's no coincidence that the major new feature of Vista is a display model just like Apple's.
My God, it's Full of Source!

But then, really, "Panther" and "Tiger" are just cool names according to Steve J's 12-year-old self... Easier to brand, with fur coat patterns and so on, but no more meaningful.
I don't know, I think the Preditor Cat theme is a powerful one. It is something that we can all envision the same (when a person says "Tiger" we see a similar image in our mind's eye. When someone says "Vista", it coudl be anything). Further, we have seen many of these animals in teh zoo as a kid on on Discovery Chanel. They are powerful. They are fast. They are to be reconed with. The Lion is the king of the beasts. (don't think Lion won't be an OS X version one day).
Longhorns are steak where I come from (Fort Worth, Texas) and Vistas are what you see on vacation. Neither inspires the confidence that it is virus free or will help me get any work done.
I only came here to do two things; kick some ass, and drink some beer...looks like we're almost out of beer.
Well it's better than "Windows Crack"
Frankly, they should have just went for the cross-promotion: "Windows 360"
think about it. A jump forward in OS effectiveness could happen, as it did with the switch from command line to 2D GUI. Creating a built in front-end for GUI that relies on 3D display is a logical way to create that "Oooooh!" factor when selling the product, and create sales for a new product, namely whatever display enhancement method MS chooses to standardize.
From TFA:
"the word 'vista' defined means "pleasing view.""
That sounds like people haven't figured out why that name was chosen. One of the main definitions of a vista is a view: a horizon.

They still have the same colors (of course) and general shape, but as opposed to the XP logo, where it's shaded normally, the logo for Vista as drawn as if there's a light shining on the center. Indeed, there's a circle of lightness focused directly on the center, and the outside is darker, as if there was a spotlight shining on it. This, of course, is exactly what Apple did a few months ago with the Tiger logo, because of Spotlight being its major feature...
Hmm. Copying Tiger's features and its logo?
does this mean I can't call it Wronghorn anymore?

Somehow, calling a new Microsoft operating system "Chicken" seems oddly appropriate.
Nobody's gay for Mole-Man.
Considering microsoft tortured Lindows and forced them to change a name that only a pinhead would confuse with a piece of junk like windows, you would think they would have investigated the name first.
There is already a virtual operating system product called SVISTA. http://www.serenityvirtual.com/index.php Gee just one letter difference. Maybe its worth a few hundred million dollars to the company that has been using that name for a couple years now.
Maybe people should chip in to a legal fund so Serenity Systems can sue Microsoft? Truly would be poetic justice.

Why is it that Microsoft thinks it can use the name VISTA ? It is already used by one of the more significant open source projects. It may be that not everyone knows about Vista.. http://www.vistasoftware.org/
I would say that the name is already in use.
