Longhorn's Offical Name is Windows Vista

UnkleAsdf writes "The folks at Redmond have long pointed to the user interface of the next generation Windows release as one of its major selling points. Now, it appears Microsoft has chosen an official name for Longhorn with just that in mind. Enter: Windows Vista. Microsoft is expected to make an official announcement early Friday morning." From the article: "Microsoft has also registered domains to go along with the newly christened Windows, including windowsvista.com. The domains were registered in late March, indicating the company made the decision even before WinHEC gave developers their first taste of Longhorn in over a year."

Trademark infringement is based on this element of "confusion" that is a function of the mark's meaning. In general, infringement does not require the infringer to be a competitor, but infringement requires a similar product.

So, you're saying that you don'e think that Vista Windows' trademark, in the context of that simplistic explaination above, is infringed upon by Microsoft's Window Vista? Vista Windows, Windows Vista... It's true that you can trademark the same or similar names when used in different contexts, but you've infringed if you've introduced confusion about the other trademark's name.

The only reason I mentioned Lindows, as the case is obviously quite different, is that its outcome is similar to the one I predicted for this, should it come to be. An infringement suit is filed, Microsoft's case appears weak and they may lose a trademark, Microsoft settles of unknown (but sure to be large) sum of money, other company changes name as part of settlement.

Interesting, but I think it will still be way too early (H2 2006) to make "a break" with the 32-bit past, present, and future. Remember, an AMD64 or EM64T processor is a minimum system requirement for x64 versions of Windows. The vast majority of the "mainstream" desktops sold today still use 32-bit processors (Celeron, Sempron, P4 5xx). The next Pentium M-like core (Yonah, Q1 2006) will still be 32-bit, and this architecture won't add EM64T until Merom (Q4 2006).

When Vista is released, most (maybe all) new Intel notebooks will still have 32-bit processors. Also, mainstream support for Windows XP Home (no extended support) ends December 31, 2006 (I'd be surprised if they didn't extend it), so there will be millions of potential 32-bit upgraders that Microsoft can't ignore. Also, some misconceptions with regard to Sanskrit:

      1) Sanskrit is a South Asian language, not Southeast Asian. (Parts of Southeast Asian cultures used Sanskrit in times, such as in Cambodia, Indonesia. In that regard, Sanskrit was known among East Asian cultures via Buddhism.)

      2) Sanskrit is a language, Devanagari is a script (as another poster points out). Sanskrit can be transcribed in many scripts. In fact, many many South Asian scripts were traditionally used to write down Sanskrit.

      3) Another post about the word "vistara" is pretty much correct. But note that many of them are the same word declined differently. The ablative case (vistarata.h/vistaraat) and the instrumental case (vistare.na) are the most often used.

I guess the parent poster wanted to be just funny. So, the parent post should be modded accordingly.
