Doom 3 Reaches Gold Master, Due August 5th

Rogerpq3 writes "Yes, this is the official word that [long-awaited PC FPS] DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! According to the .plan file of id CEO Todd Hollenshead: 'We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with your local retailer for that information... [Internationally] the UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (cue Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland)'."

      Lets take a look at some dates...to place things in perspecive:

      1993: Doom released
      1994: Doom II released

      1996: Duke Nukem 3D 1.0 came out using modified Doom II engine

      1996: Quake released
      1997: Quake II released
      1999: Quake III released
      2004: Doom III released.

      So, Id's had 6 major releases in the past 11 years and in the time that 3D Realms has been working on ONE Duke Nukem Forever, Id has had 4 whole games come out.

      Let's face it folks, Duke Nukem Forever isn't coming out. 8 years for one game?

      True... but part of the issue with many is the length of time Duke has been 'in development' I haven't been able to find an exact date, but Duke was announced in or before 99 and was originally being built on the Quake 2 engine, they gave up on that engine and moved to the Unreal engine. In that time, the Unreal engine has gone through several impressive revisions and we have seen plenty of shipped games using the Quake 2 and Quake 3 engine.

      Looks like Duke was announced to be moving to the Unreal engine back in June of 98... so 6 years since the engine switch. Lets not forget the quote from the release "As for machine specifications, Duke Nukem Forever is a 1999 game and we think that timeframe matches very well with what we have planned for the game."

      Also... aren't we all waiting for the Duke Nukem movie as well?

      Exactly! The Radeon 9600SE cards or GeForceFX 5200 cards that run about $50 are more than sufficient to run DOOM3 at medium quality, according to previous remarks by developers and the review posted here.

      It was announced in 1998.

      It was dubbed to be the next "Quake Killer" or something like that.

      I liked the original. While not as technologically advanced as Quake, it was more fun to play. Hell, the sprites looked pretty good considering.

      As for DOom3, I'm going to wait for reviews and hardware requirements before I preorder.

      Are you sure Duke3D was a modified Doom 2 engine? I thought they specially developed their own and trumpeted is as a Doom-beater.

      I remember the rumours that LucasArts had pulled the Doom engine apart to develop Dark Forces.

      No, Duke3d used a engine developed completely independent of Id, called "BUILD". It was much closer in capabilities to the Quake engine than to the Doom II engine, though many (most?) people considered it inferior to the Quake engine.

      Do you have Far Cry? If not, I'd recommend it, becuase a) it's awesome and b) it's a good way to gauge whether your system will be good for Doom 3, since they're supposed to be similar in graphics and the like. Ditto for Half Life 2.

      I can run Far Cry with pretty much maxed out graphics at 1280X1024 minus antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, so I should be ok for Doom3. I have an AMD Athlon 3000+ XP, a ATI Radeon 9800 XT and 1G RAM, in case you're wondering.

      Duke Nukem 3D did not have a modified Doom Engine. It was built on Ken Silverman's Build engine along with Shadow Warrior and Blood.

      This wasn't a major release as it wasn't an update to the graphics engine in a huge way and basically the Quake 3 engine. Also, I belive that Id farmed that out to another company to make if I remember right. I could be wrong on that though.

      But then again, it looked very similar to the Doom engine that it's hard not to make that comparison. It's content was good though.

      Bit of a correction... Duke3D used the Build Engine, created by a guy named Ken Silverman, who was also responsible for an _old_ shareware game by the name of Ken's Labyrinth. Info on the history of the engine is available from Ken himself here. He's also got several other useful utilities, such as an excellent PNG optimizer.

      Actually, that's a bit misguided.

      It really is more related to the Doom engine in design because Quake was "real 3D" where as the Doom/Build engines were basically hacks which is why they ran so much faster.

      For instance, it was really a challenge for the developer of the Build engine to have support of a room directly above another room.

      Build/Doom engines are raycasters. That's why when you looked up or down (or 3rd-person mode) in the Build/Doom engines walls looked skewed.

      The Quake engine was actual 3D and never had this problem.

      But, I will say that Duke 3D and Quake came out about the same time and were direct competitors.

      I just got a new FX53 machine with an X800 Pro, and I'm hoping that's plenty for Doom 3 at a reasonable framerate. It handles Far Cry very well, and just about every other game I've thrown at it.

      Only thing is RAM. I have 1 GB stock, and am considering adding a second GB. Wonder if that'd make a difference at all...hmmm.

      Well let's see here... There have been around 13 releases of various Duke Nukem games since 1991 right up until 2004, not counting DNF.

      Not to mention all of the other games that 3D Realms put out (Shadow Warrior, Wolfenstein 3D, Raptor, BioMenace, Max Payne 1/2 etc.). So no, they've been working on far more than just Duke Nukem Forever for 8 years.

      Oh, I'm not sure where you got the modified DOOM II engine idea, pays to do a little trivial research though...

      3D Realms has had a team dedicated to DNF for eight years now. The other Duke games were developed by different teams within 3DR, as were the rest of the games you've mentioned. So yes, they've been working only on DNF for eight years.

      Not inferior as much as it was a totally different beast. The Build engine was only 2.5d as opposed to Quake's full 3D. Build was probably the best 2.5D engine out there (it even supported room stacking, which was pretty fly for 2.5D), but the move to real 3D was a huge leap.

      As an aside, can anyone fill me in on what the Quake engine did that Descent didn't? I'm sure there's a reason why Quake's 3D is better than Descent's, but I really have no idea what it is other than Romero had better hair.

      Right. It can't ever come out. It's been so hyped, and so delayed, that the expectation will be too high if it ever does come out. It will not only have to be the best game anyone has ever seen, it will have to be better than anything even hinted at from other companies, or it will disappoint, and flop massively.

      That is an impossible burden to meet. By the time they can implement, they are obsolete. They are trapped in the kind of project where the best they can do is get a year or so in, and then realize that the bar has been raised again and they need to start over with a new architecture. This will happen over and over, until they give up.

      I'm not quite sure exactly why you need a DVD burner, 24" monitor, or whatever the nVentiv things are (presumably cooling system?). The game will run extremely well with the other components you listed.

      Yup. One of the simple joys of Descent was shooting out all the lights on accident then flying blind while trying to get out of the damned pitch-black room. I'm sure there's some difference between the two engines, but Descent did good lighting.

      What??? I clicked your link and saw this and this. In most of these benchmarks, FX5200 beats the R9600SE by 40-200% framerate levels! That's the opposite of your point!

      Now there is a big difference between a Radeon 9600 and a 9600SE. Are you sure you're not thinking of the regular 9600?

      I think one factor in the smaller splash made by Descent was the steeper learning curve to play it. It was in effect a flight simulator with full 6 degrees freedom of movement, and mastering the controls just to move around took some time.

      On the other hand, Quake (like Doom and Duke 3D) only required the player to move forward and backward & turn left and right to move around. Even side-step and jump were optional just to go from room to room.

      Also, the level designs in Descent went from relatively simple to very complex much too quickly IMHO for most players. Forming mental images of Quake was easy, since they were essentially 2D floor plans like real world buildings. The Descent maps, with hallways going off in any direction, curving in multiple planes, etc. took a while to learn how to visualize, and many palyers simply gave up when the learning curve got too steep.

      I don't really think so. Duke Nukem 3D was a terrific game, but not because it blew everyone else out of the water as far as technological achievement or anything. As I remember, it looked much better than a lot of games when it first came out, but Tomb Raider and Quake were both out not long after, and Duke was suddenly a 2.5 dimension game in a 3D world. But the weapons were kind of clever (pipe-bombs, shrink-rays, jetpacks), and the level design was kinda cool, and it was just fun to play. Plus, it wasn't too hard to make maps for the BUILD engine, and it came with an editor, so you could always download some new maps and stuff.

      I think game companies are too often trying to be the newest to the market with yet-unheard-of new graphics that only run on $500 video cards, but that really only appeals to a relatively small audience. Grand Theft Auto has been one of the most successful games lately, and it hasn't been because of the graphics. Make a game fun, just really fun, and even if it doesn't put other games' graphics to shame, people will dig it. At this point, I'd be happy if they're just remake Duke Nukem 3D in a new engine, not even so much to improve the graphics, but just so I can play what was a really fun game on my current computer.

      I don't remember any level designs in Duke Nukem 3D where there were rooms directly above other rooms. (In fact, I'm not sure it was possible at all given the way that the builder worked.)

      Instead, they would be clever and use teleport to move the user to a different part of the grid where the "upper" room would be (but you wouldn't be able to see out of that upper room). Multi-level towers were usually just built at multiple spots on the world grid with teleports between the levels.

      Or they'd play around with the layout so that after running around in a big circle, it felt like you were above the other room.

      Sure, it wasn't real 3D, but it was extremely easy to bang out levels since you weren't trying to layout 3D objects without all of the tools of a 3D CAD program. With the builder, you could map out your level design in 2D, then you just went in and changed your floor/ceiling heights to be whatever you wanted. (Duke 3D didn't have "outdoors", just textures that sorta looked like they were outdoors.)

      Designing Quake's 3D levels, OTOH, was definitely an order of magnitude more difficult, and you really had to plan ahead. (I'd guess that more modern tools are easier to use... this was back in the 1997-1999 timeframe.)

      I believe descents was better, though I think it did have limits in terms of textures and polygons. While Descent seems to have better lighting and handling of the 3d environment. It definatly felt lower polygon, but I'm not quite sure. I know the enemies were definatly blockier.

      Umm... Quake had gravity? Descent was block-based while Quake was polygon based? Descent spread their people and their RAM more thinly? Descent's artists were obsessed with high-color contrast, which only accentuated the blockyness of it all, while Quake featured muted browns that almost didn't make it look like you were being attacked by Mr. Square and his 2D minions?

      Art direction and design decisions can go a long way to the differences between games. It can't hurt, though, that quake was implemented by a bunch of truly top notch coders.

      For the sake of adding a bit more info to your explanation...

      In later games using Duke's BUILD engine (written by then-teen-programmer Ken Silverman) the developers make the "room-over-room" illusion even better by simply doing two render passes. If you are in the upper part, then the first render pass will be the lower room, which since you are outside it doesn't include the ceiling, and then the second render pass renders the upper room using a null texture for the floor making it transparent. You had to line it all up quite carefully, but you could then get a room-above-room illusion that you can actually see, which was pretty neat.

      Ken also later added support for voxel (volume pixel) objects, allowing true 3D objects to take the place of selected in-world sprites, although that implementation used low-res voxels so they looked a little blocky.

      Shadow Warrior: I'll give you this one, 3DRealms made it.
      Wolfenstein 3D: WOLFENSTEIN! Are you nuts, this is the game that put iD on the map before 3D Realms was a speckle in Miller's eye. Maybe they own the rights now or something, but credit where credit is due.
      Max Payne 1/2: Developed by the boys at Remedy way over in Finland. Can't really use this as a excuse for DNF never getting done.

      I really don't see why people are waiting for DNF in the first place. Sure, Duke3D was sort of fun in it's time, I used to play it online a lot. But what makes people believe the Duke team has any sort of idea of how to create a modern game, why get hung up on Duke3D and not some other game? Except for their one single hit Duke3D the team's track record is frankly crap. Where the hell did all the expectations come from? Duke as a franchise is entirely mediocre if you take away the hype.

      There were a few levels in DN3D where weird topology was happening - one of the two I can remember was this large square, with four hallways around it where the players started. Each hallway had a large open door going into the center "courtyard". The freaky thing was that there were four different courtyards occupying the same space, but existing seperately. Which courtyard you saw (and interacted with) depended on which door you went through. Each courtyard only had one door back to the hallways, to keep it sane.
      The other level looked like a smallish torus, the catch was that you had to walk around it twice to get back to the same place.
      I still have no idea how they managed that, even after opening the levels in the BUILD editor.
      Wouldn't it be excellent if a new(ish) proper 3D game could pull stunts like that?!

      I'd take issue with that - IMO the best 2.5D engine was the one used for Dark Forces.

      Build has the advantage that it can use higher resolutions, but the Dark Forces engine not only supports stacked rooms, but also some pretty arbitrary geometry modifications, and (best of all) true 3D objects. The raised walkways in Build look like flat textures, because that's what they are, but raised walkways in Dark Forces look like raised walkways. And the TIE fighters flying overhead look like they've come straight out of a true 3D game like TIE fighter, largely because they did. When I made it to the roof of the first level and my ship came in to pick me up... well, that was one of the defining moments of the mid-90s.

      Build/Doom engines are raycasters. That's why when you looked up or down (or 3rd-person mode) in the Build/Doom engines walls looked skewed.

      Wow, even in this day and age, even after the source was released, slashdotters still sprout this old axim. I can't speak for the build engine, but doom was not a raycaster (wolf was), it was a polygon renderer, with bsp-based culling and sorting. The reason the look up-look down was skewed is because the polygons were never meant to be rotated on the x/z axes, and so they were just skewed.

      And yes I know you couldn't look up in doom, but you could in a few doom-based games (hexen?)

      Actually that was possible since the engine was based on portals rather than absolute positions.
      Meaning, from each room, you can see and move to the rooms that connected to it. You could infact make a complete circle, and place different things in the same "real" space, but it would work cuz it connects the objects to the rooms, and the rooms are different.

      Same thing could be made in the Descent engine (a rather underrated engine, while actually being the first almost real 3D engine, before DN3D and quake). In Descent, the rooms were created by adding 3D shapes to existing walls and therefore connecting them. You could, if you wanted, to make 10 loops that occupy the same "real" space, but could only move thru the connected parts.
      There a user made map called "Pandora's Box" (iirc), which was a cube where u could fly around the outer part of it, and every cycle it would change. It was really mad, and playing these maps in multiplayer is really interesting!
      Another cool thing you could have done, is have a cube in the middle of the room, and instead of connecting it normally, you could have corridors coming from the outside of the cube and continuing outside the room! So you could have a cube in the middle of the room, that actually let you go to 6 different areas of the map!

      I've owned a 9700 Pro since they were $300 on Ebay (still around 350 new). I've still not upgraded and I'm a hardcore gamer. This card has lasted me longer than most.

      There wasn't sufficient difference to upgrade to a 9800 Pro but I'll probably be going to the X800 Platinum at some point in the near future

      You won't be disappointed with your purchase, I hope you enjoy the games on it.

      Build/Doom engines are raycasters No they're not. Wolfenstein 3D was a raycaster. Doom used a two dimensional BSP tree. Build from memory was more akin to a portal renderer than a raycaster. If Duke3D's look mode used raycasting, it wouldn't have looked as bad as it did. Raycasting sends a ray out for each pixel on your screen to see what it should draw there. Wolf3D was as quick as it was as it only did it for the horizontal pixels and consequently only had to perform ray casts about 300 times instead of 300x150 times (I think that was the rough render area of Wolf3D). Duke3D used a method known as shearing for its look mode, which basically stretches the screen vertically.

      I played the Doom 3 leaked alpha over a year ago on a 32 MB Geforce2 MX with a celeron 400. It wasn't speedy, but it was playable.
      I'm sure they added quite a bit to the engine since then, but they've had plenty of time to add performance tweaks as well.

      Take a look at pricewatch.com, you can get a 128MB Geforce FX for ~50 bucks.

      Actually, I think the lighting was faked like in DOOM. The sector/room light level could be in various levels from lit to dark. Quake had real lighting: a rocket or grenade could light up arbitrary walls.

      I remeber that game: "Ken's Labyrinth - The Search For Sparky" IIRC, It was pitched as a 'child friendly' FPS, no blood, no real 'death' scenes. child friendly it may have been, but it was also absolutely horrible. perhaps one of the worst games i've ever played. gotta give him credit for the tech at the time, but overall, it was still a shitty game

      uhhhh....I played that alpha also with an Athlon XP 1800 and an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro with 128 MB of RAM. It was nowhere near playable. Best I ever got was 20 FPS until more than one MOb got on screen then it dropped to 1 FPS. So it seems really odd that you found it playable on a celeron 400 and a Geforce 2 MX

      As large as those textures look, a RAID might be necessary, definitely for striping. Before I bumped to 1GB of RAM, it took me like 2-3 minutes to load a single UT2K4 map+players... closer to 5 minutes for Onslaught to load the vehicles. I'm up to a 1GB now and it still takes close to a minute. 2GB would be better, but it still loads a lot into the paging file. If you could stripe the paging file, it would do wonders for load times. I tried disabling it and Windows cried constantly that it wasn't big enough.

      Why 4 drives are needed, I'm not sure. RAID5 all the way!!! Get striping and who needs mirroring when you have parity!

      No, Hexen and Heretic were not in the Wolfenstein series, but they did use the Doom engine. I was just stating a fact that there were more great games that idSoftware made, even if they did have to use the same engine. After all... Return to Castle Wolfenstein does use the Quake III engine after all. But hah, so does a lot of other games not developed by id -- Jedi Outcast for instance.

      I'm not saying GTA doesn't have good graphics, but I really don't think it's success is due to the graphics. I don't even think the graphics are so much better than other games that are out there. In fact, I'm sure the reason it's so CPU intensive is that it maintains a big, complex world. It was this innovation, a big, complex world that you're free to explore, that I think really made it a hit. Not graphics, and not running down hookers.

      The Duke 3D engine wasn't really 3d as its used a raytracing technique to render its graphics as opposed to the Quake (and later engine) which use real poylgoes and lightning to display its graphic.

      yeah when I first loaded the map without tweaking I got about 5-8 FPS with nothing going on. Then when MObs showed up it dropped to total slideshow. Tweaking the conf files bumped it up to 20 FPS but still tanked when MObs appeared

      I think it was the Unreal engine (the first generation of it). It may have switched from q2 to unreal, I can't remember. It is ridiculous though, i remember over five years ago reading a preview in a magazine that covered many pages and had tons of screenshots.

      Can you imagine if this game does actually get released ?, either no one will believe it or no one will notice cause everyone will have forgotten about it.

      Actually, CNN for some time after September 11 had a really cool feature - an IRC channel featuring nothing but the closed-captions from the network. It was a brilliant idea.

      And gopher was terrible. Please, that's one thing that I'm glad is dead. It is interesting, however, that they do choose to run it via finger. IIRC fingerd was the preferred method of rooting boxes remotely. More holes than Swiss cheese. Etc.

      When I received the e-mail confirming the release date at GameStop, I immediately told my boss I needed August 5th and 6th off because of Doom 3. I was actually considering asking off for some additional days, but I kind of need the money, and I'm taking off the week prior to hang out with my best friend in celebration of her 21st birthday.

      I think last time I checked, it was some new otherwise unheard-of studio in the middle east or russia or somewhere. Originally, they planned it to be one of those trippy soul-searching type games, with their own advanced 3D engine developed entirely in house (except for the physics engine, of course), but then they decided that FPSes sell better, so they stuck a rocket launcher in it and set it during the apocalypse. You have to kill demons to get into Heaven and... hey... wait a minute...

    There's also a review in the new PC Gamer, and from what they write the game is everything we expected and then some. Here are a few exerpts:

      Just an FYI.. I used to write for a variety of gaming rags. PC Gamer is known (hell, famous) for reviewing beta software as "official". Considering the game just went gold, I can't imagine they have anything better than a release candidate.

      A lot can change between RC and gold. Stability, performance. Things can actually get worse. I would take their reviews with a heavy dose of Sodium Chloride.

      That said, I will probably still pick up a copy, especially since I won't have to reboot into Windows to play it. There's a reason the old Loki Kohan is still one of my most played games even though I own Ahriman's Gift (the sequel).

      Doom 3 fast approaches, and the newest edition of PC Gamer has the "world exclusive" review. How did it score? It scored a 94%. Check out its highs, lows and bottom line:

      Highs: Extraordinary graphics and sound; incredible tension, atmosphere, and mayhem.

      Lows: Some stabs at humor fall a bit flat.

      Bottom Line: Just as we'd hoped, it's a non-stop ride of tension, carnage and terror. A new classic.

      I stopped reading PC Gamer a long time ago because they frequently overrated average games and you could tell they were hyping games up because they got an exclusive on it.

      I vividly recall the appalling Quake 2 review that they did. They made all these claims of amazing AI that hunted you down (the AI was nothing special) and that you could shoot off body parts (one enemy had a special "whoops, my head came off!" animation regardless of where he was shot). Some of the things they say are just flat out lies sometimes.

      This seems to be a slight problem with Future's games magazines. Hell, it seems to be a worrying trend in particular with UK games magazines in general. There was a load of stuff about that with Driver 3 as well, being given exclusives and glowing reviews in UK mags. Edge makes up for Futures share, but because it has to compensate for a dozen mags, it shoots the other way and is so far up it's own retro, Japanese-loving[1] arse it's come back out the other end.

      [1] Edge apologises for giving Gunstar Heroes 6/10 in the first issue. Admittedly they were wrong, but do they have to apologise for it every time they mention Treasure?

The game has four render paths: NV10, NV20, R200, and ARB2. All paths look awesome, even down to a g4mx, but the ARB2 path is the "full package," and is used for the R300+ and Geforce FX+ cards. It does all it's fancy **** in one pass. 3. PCI Express enhances NOTHING. 4. The difference between a 128mb and 256mb card is that the former uses compressed textures whereas the latter only compresses diffuse and specualr maps. In another words, no big deal. However, a 500mb card is needed to run the game in Ultra Quality mode. 5. 512MB is the ideal system total memory. 384 is required, 1GB is nice, but the difference is negligible. 6. Nothing special is included for a 64-bit OS. 7. A 1.5 Ghz processor is the least recommended, but a 2Ghz and above will help since... 8...The sound engine is entirely CPU dependant. Therefore a crappy soundcard works flawlessly. Not to worry, the enfine only uses a "small percentage of cycles, much less than if the engine relied on a soundcard. 9. The only reccommendation regarding faster framerates is to disable to "advanced special effects option." In other words, upgrade if you have problems. 10. They tie it up by providing three levels of "Doom lovin' PC's" Low-End: 1.5GhzP4 or equivalent 512MB Ram Geforce4 Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500 Mid-Range: 2.4GhzP4 or equivalent 1GB RAM Geforce5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT High_End: Aka Hardware that doesn't exist, but best guess anyway 3.4GhzP4 or AMD equivalent 2GB RAM GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE.

      Due to a mistake during media ordering, Doom 3 will in fact come on 2^10000000 3" floppy disks[3], with 5" disks available by mailing the form in the box. NeXT Magneto-optical discs will also be available shortly.

    The bar has been raised with regards to packaged content editors, after all. Heck, the Morrowind editing tools would let you re-create the entire game!

      All the editors (except maybe Photoshop and Maya) are included in the game itself. You probably can switch between the map editor and game on the fly, changing the level, pressing a key and seeing it all in action. Not the first game ever to do this (e.g. the Battlezone action RTS had a similar stryle of level editing), but a welcome addition, nonetheless.

      The current )third party editors (such as GTKRadiant) will still make a release for Doom 3, despite the in-game editor.

      Giving id's previous record of releasing tools which all lacked options/user friendlyness, i think this is a good move (Standard Radiant is pure hell to work with, compared to, for example, GTKRadiant.)

      And I'm not too sure bout this, but I also think mappers don't have to compile their .map to .bsp , anymore ( a -very- timeconsuming process) as the data in the .map file will be generated in real time in the D3 engine : Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.

      You can download a point release for Linux and copy the game data over from the Windows version. Or copy the whole install over from a Windows machine and install the point release over it. I don't know exactly how I did it, but I've been succesful in getting it to run using that approach.

      Or maybe it was a demo version instead of a point release. It's quite a long time ago.

      In any case, it worked without having to buy the Linux version.

      Probably because he doesn't have any to spare. I oredered one 2 weeks ago(dual 1.8, 9600 XT card just to play doom) and it hasn't even shipped yet, lots of others are having problems too, kinda makes me pissed at Apple....

      I think we have kinda different aims - bloat has some features which unp doesn't have (actually checking for apps, printing where to get them, and there is an undocumented method of fetching the apps), checking whether the file has a subdirectory in it which contains all the other files (and if not, create a directory), etc.

      Though the code is complete and utter crap at the moment, I need to do a rewrite some time.

      unp seems to be aimed towards a basic, simple script to extract files, without loads of checking.

      9600 XT? I never understood why Apple keeps shipping such shitty default video cards in their high end Macs. If you really want to enjoy Doom 3 do yourself a favor and choose one of the upgrades available when you configure your system in their store.

      Or just buy one off-the-shelf and stick it in, though I'm not sure how easy that is to do. I'm *assuming* it's possible, just never done it... =)

      It probably won't be a long wait. ID's fairly good with Mac ports. They do everything in-house and they usually do a fine job (they need to since their engine is going to be licensed for tons of games).

      Doom 3 was introduced on a Mac, and they've supposedly been keeping up with Mac development.

      But since I have a Dual 450 G4, don't poop gold bricks, and can't afford a new PowerMac... I doubt I'll be buying a Mac copy of Doom 3 any time soon. I'll probably snag the stripped down xbox version :/

      The move to UNIX through OS X and Mac was the upgrade from Windows.

      I imagine my dual 2.5GHz liquid-cooled G5 with GeForce 6800 Ultra will do a passable job of playing DOOM III. Especially looking at how much Quake 3 benefits from dual processors.

      Sorry, the Mac version of Doom 3 isn't coming out simultaneously with the Windows version. According to id's CEO, thay won't release the Mac version "until it's just as polished as the PC version". But they are still working on it and hope to have it out soon.

      Nice try. But I'll bet that using EAX would have been faster. Fine with me, though, considering that stuff doesn't work under Linux.

      I have always heard that this is the case. From what I understand with current hardware, the bottleneck is the graphics chip, not the connection to the motherboard.

      There's no reason at all to assume that the reviewer didn't test it with and without PCI Express.

      I'm glad to hear this one, when battlefield 1942 came out I had tons of problems with my sound card (ymf744) that I've never had with any games before. Sometimes sounds would cut out, sometimes I'd lose sound entirely. I use the same sound card in other machines with no problems at all with any other games so far. Actually there was one other game that had the same problem, Midieval Total Warfare I believe.

      I ended up buying a new sound card, and I still had some problems, just less frequentyly. UT2k4 cuts out sounds sometimes, but I'm not convinced that not a bug in the actual game itself.

      Searching google about the problems I have I find nothing but other people complaining about the same type of stuff, with no solutions. With mixing in software, you remove all unknowns, plus you get Mac and Linux compatilbity.

      I agree with other people tho, I don't see how doing software only mixing would mean less cpu cyles used.

      The value of the extra 512MB in a 1GB setup isn't for improving gameplay, it's for getting back your computer within seconds instead of minutes after you quit.

      Swap out an entire OS and you'll have to swap it back in, see.

    I would seriously like to see any statistics on the amount of PC hardware that is sold due to the arrival of games like Doom 3 / Half Life 2 / etc. Personally, I have been waiting for the last 2 years to upgrade, specifically for this game. My system has been okay for everything else I need to do, so it just didn't make sense to go out and build a system, knowing full well that I will be behind the tech curve when this games comes out.

    I know some will think I am an idiot, but I am an unapologetic id fan. I have played most other FPS games out there, and id just seems to get the "feel" of FPS down to a science. The instant snap is perfect.

    I just wish they had included cooperative mode, like in the original Doom. Some of my best gaming experiences were all night coop Doom on nightmare mode. Good times.

    i wonder how much computer and video card sales will spike due to doom3. it's a killer app (pun intended!) for gamers. if I had money to spare, i'd definately buy a new computer and doom3, as well as all the other games i've missed out on since a pII 350MHz and gforce 2 became not enough muscle.

      mostly, yeah. with the exception of 1 year of EQ, the entire Baldurs Gate epic, and I was able to run WC3 on lowest quality settings (and it was bearable). Load times were a little long in online playing, and a few people mentioned how slow my load time was. other than that... yes. 2 year leave, here i come!

      That's a change. Carmack origionally wanted to make the min the GF3Ti200, since that was the lowest card with the capabilities to run DX8 level shader functions. Wonder why he relented? Maybe a licensee didn't want to be so pigenholed for their own project? In fact I bought my GF3Ti200 specifically based on that since I needed a new card for NWN anyways (didn't support my old Voodoo3 V3000 and the Ti was the only DX8 card even close to $100 at the time). Of course now you can buy a card that will probably run Doom3 at 60fps with reasonable options for that same $100 =)

      I just looked at this, a gf FX5200 128mb utterly badass video card for less than 60 bucks. GeForce 4 tis can be found for even less. Of that list, the graphics card is the cheapest

      Which of course is a pain in my ass because 2 years ago i bought a gf3 after seeing a video of Doom3... now of course 2 years later its at the bare minimum...

      By August, you should probably be able to get a card that'll tear that game up for $150-60; the low-end cards on the list are already only $50-60. I'd be suprised if my Radeon 9600 can't play this one acceptably, and that's a $100 card.

      I second that - I picked up a 5200 expecting it to trounce my Geforce 2 GTS for UT2004. My bad. My Geforce 2 GTS destroys this card - which also destroyed my faith in Nvidia's FX line of cards. It's sad when at the same settings my 4 year old video card outperforms a brand new one that came out in 2003. Nvidia shouldn't even consider selling these things.

      I have a hard time believing an FX5200 will be acceptable for Doom3. I've tried it in other games. In City of Heroes, it was acceptable if I turned the resolution down to 1024x768 and cut down various quality settings. In Dark Age of Camelot, it was a slideshow.

      Doom3 (and other id engines) don't use directX, they use openGL, which is why they are cross-platform.

      He liked it because they had geometry and lighting.

      I know that, that's why I said DX8 LEVEL functions. Unfortunatly the ARB hasn't kept up so there is no standard subversion of OpenGL to define the same set of functionality. The programmable pixel shader was the big deal with the DX8 parts, obviously it was a LOT of work performing the stuff without the programmable shader since he essentially had to convert the programmable code down to packs of fixed function ops which could be run on the older T&L engines.

      Agreed. I "upgraded" from an MX440 to an FX 5200, and it was the worst decision I ever made. It's little wonder that a few months after I bought the 5200 it was cheaper than an MX440. I recently picked up a 9600 XT, for only fifty bucks more than I paid for the 5200, and it was well worth it. I'm no video card fanboy, but I'll stick with ATI until they screw me over like NVidia did.

      I concur. Dear God but the FX5200 is a pisspoor excuse for a video card. Beats the Voodoo4 I replaced, but even going from that ancient thing I wasn't exactly blown away.

      One big advantage, though: the thing's fanless. Might be a good choice for a media-centre PC, but it's no gaming card.

      My favorite finger story: I'm working an employment fair at my old University, and a cute girl comes over and gives her resume.     as always from ID Software, a true gaming company who are well organized. Their games are always top notch bringing the greatest engines ever to be licensed. Quake 1 engine was revolutionnary. Same goes for Quake 3(no shit. been used for so many games) and now Doom 3! You can predict another 10 years for Duke Nukem Forever when 3dRealms will switch engines yet again :o

    This was predicted cause of QuakeCon's D3 tournament and I heard it will in same time have a linux client installer similar to Epic Game's strategy with UT 2003/2004.

    Anybody could confirm this or it's just rumors flying around?

      Have you ever actually tried to buy an "indexed" game in Germany? Important distinction: "on the index" != "banned"! Doom 3 probably won't be on display in supermarkets but many small stores run by actual people who like games will have it. Find one of these and ask them (they're not allowed to advertise it).

      If you're poor, get a Radeon 9600xt. If you've got the mad cash to blow, go for the 9800xt or 9800pro. I've got no idea the status of support for the x800, but you never know.

      I can't get X11 (x.org) to play nicely with my X800 Pro. "radeon" drivers says it can't find a matching board, "vesa" straight up hangs, and "vga" has lousy resolution. Could fix it if I could be bothered adding the model to the radeon driver stuff, I'm sure, but can't be bothered right now.

      Anyone had any luck with the X800? It's possible I'm doing something wrong...

      Whatever you decide on, get an nvidia card. Their linux drivers are of much higher quality (they care more it seems) than ATIs. I have a gf fx5700 ultra, I'm expecting it run nice. UT2004 runs excellent at 1600x1200@32bit with everything maxed out. And it's very compatible with linux. AA & AF works too. Trust me, it's all in the drivers.

      Radeon cards are still a no-go in Linux, especially with something as demanding as Doom3.

      A GeforceFX5900 og 5950, or perhaps a Geforce6800 is a much better choice than Radeon.

      The performance on the high-end Radeon cards (9800 and up) is absolutely awful compared to the high-end Geforce cards (5900 and up), and the drivers are very unstable and prone to crashing.

      It was so bad that I returned my 9600 and went back to my trusty Ti4200, because it had better performance.

    One of my friends and I just (today) designed and ordered our systems from NewEgg. We both got Athlon64 3000+, radeon 9800 pro 128, 1 gb ram (from pricewatch), case, hd, dvd burner, and motherboard. About 850$. Right now I think AMD is sitting high on the hog because their processors were faster and cheaper while everyone is upgrading. Also, the xbox version of doom 3 will have coop.

    And it isn't silly to upgrade your hardware now to run doom 3 and halflife 2 - if you can run these two games well, then you can probably run any game made in the next 3 years fine. Now is the last minute to upgrade and keep up with current software.

    Radeon 9600 has -never- -ever- been top notch! If you believe otherwise, start reading on the different hardware sites.

    It's been sub par from day one. It was made in a hurry to replace Radeon 9500 which was a MUCH better card/chip than 9600. Problem with 9500 was that it was too good because it was just a small task to change it to match 9700.
    So what did ATI do, they released 9600 which has always been a poor performer but couldn't be used as a 9700 so it was released as a cheap card to perform as a cheap card.
    You should have tried to get a used 9500 or a 9700. They you wouldn't have had any problems now.

    My computer which is two years old has no problems with Far Cry, UT 2004 (at high settings) or Doom 3 when it comes along.

    Buy the right hardware and you don't have to swap it every year. Don't buy the cheap cards like MX, 9200 or 9600. Just buy the year old high performance cards. Right now you could go for a cheap 9800 pro since the x800 has been released.

    INTC fell 10% today, despite profits (or was it revenues?) doubling. Good time to buy?

    It will probably be better in a few weeks. I saw an article (which I cannot find now) that said that Intel's stock fell after they reported an excess of inventory. So apparently, something's not being bought. Hopefully it will lower the prices in the stores.

      I'm convinced that Valve never intended on releasing Half Life 2 on time. Wasn't it originally a late September 2003 release date? The code theft was just a clever scape goat to delay it indefinetly.

      I'm still waiting on Team Fortress 2... heh. Which I've considered dead in the water for all practical purposes, just like Duke Nukem Forever. The respective companies have stopped talking about the project, so I'm guessing they're dead projects, or at least shelved. I'm just hoping I won't have to add half life 2 to this list, but at least Valve is still talking about HL2, so that's at least good news.

      Umm, that's rediculous. People have played HL2. To even think that it is Vaporware is simply ignorant. Yes, it has a very delayed launch, I personally spoke with some of the lead designers at valve last may at E3. I also attented the sneak peak conference which showed off Half Life 2. let's just say they've spent a lot of their time on that physics engine, which was absolutely amazing. I won't be the only one who will spend entirely too much time playing with the gravity gun.

      What this really boils down to is that Valve has all the money in the world. Just like ID. They can take their sweet time making games. They don't have to meet deadlines, because they get to set them. They are concerned with making the best game they can and getting it to us when it's finished. I will take that ANYDAY over a rushed to market product that is riddled with bugs and the ending chopped and nice features left off for "expansion packs". If you'll notice well funded companies that actually finish their games rarely need "expansion packs" every 6 months, which is the industries new way of making you pay for a beta test, and then pay again for the finished product.

      Thank god Blizzard is taking this same stance with WoW. I'm in Beta, they don't have all the classes even finished yet, there's no way they are releasing in August, and they won't. Every blizzard game has been delayed, and everyone complains, yet how many copies did Diablo 2 sell? Yeaaah ...

      I think it's more that Valve lied to us than anything else. At E3 2003 they promised a September 30th 2003 launch, and then they had their code theft, which I'm fairly sure was a real break-in. However, the code that was released by "anonymous hacker" was FAR from complete, although that might not have been the full code (I don't trust Gabe's take on it one bit though). After that happened they used the theft as a reason for the game being nearly a year late, but I bet you that even without that excuse, it wouldn't have been anywhere near ready at that time. They're still working on the multiplayer aspects of the game now, with CS-Source going into open BETA in September.

      Blizzard gets kudos for always putting out a quality game, and even though they miss deadlines like mad, they're usually up-front about it. Valve had Half-life, which was fantastic, and afterwards, what really? Most of their fame came from 3rd party mods (CS), and nearly all of their sales came from repackaging Half-life with these self-same free mods. Now they're trying to make their second wholly-original game, and they don't seem to be too honest about how progress on it is coming along.

      Amusingly, I remember some guy on /. claiming to work for UPS, saying he had seen boxes of HL2 games stockpiled in a truck, just waiting to be shipped out... around September 27th, or so.

      I think Valve is just young. I'm not about to get upset over release dates, if it's not out, it's not out. There is really nothing to be upset about. Life will go on without HL2 people, and it will come out when it's ready, and we shouldn't expect it any sooner.

      As for the code theft, who knows what really happened, but I for one won't dwell on it, and won't let it diminish the great game I saw working at E3.

      If I was a gambling man, I'd be willing to be HL2 is coming out sometime this year. I would have bet on September, but maybe they don't want to overlap with Doom3? Or maybe that's not an issue, because HL2's longevity will most likely depend on it's multiplayer aspects.

      It'd be wicked if I could order HL2 through Steam. I'd like to see how that works out.

      You should be able to, I've already gotten a free Steam account through the purchase of my Radeon 9800XT which was supposed to come bundled with HL2. Instead they gave me a steam acccount and said, when HL2 is ready, it will be downloaded and you can play the day it releases.

      I agree that HL2 isn't vapourware. Still I feel that Valve really have missed the chance to deliver something special. When I first saw the game demoed a long time ago I was thrilled, the gravity gun vas original and the graphics looked crazy. Now I am playing Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and the gravity gun is there. HL2 isn't groundbreaking anymore. Neither is the graphics.

      Same with Doom 3. It looked incredible in 2002 but now it's almost standard.

      I just hope I'm dead wrong about this and Doom 3 and HL2 will have me quivering on the floor :)

    Thanks for the information. I wish my system would take a GeForce 6, but it's a Shuttle XPC with a 250 Watt power supply. Even if they fit, I couldn't count on them to run... which is sad, before I knew about the power requirements I was planning to run nVidia.

      A lot of us played it at E3, it's quite scary. =) Doom3 has a much stronger horror story feel to it, it's almost like playing through a movie. I can only say it's like the perfect wedding between the story based aspects of Resident Evil, and the fast paced action of Doom.

    This is an interesting display in how much we've let our standards go in regards to gaming. While there is all this salivating over the fact that DOOM III is finally fucking done, I've yet to hear any mention about a possible demo release. I was too young to experience it firsthand, but I recall hearing about BBS systems and FTPs being brought to a complete standstill when the original shareware copy of DOOM was released back in 93 or 94 as everyone tried to get their grubby little paws on it. Who cares if the final version has gone gold? As gamers it's only fair that we're able to download a demo before we trust the words of a "exclusive" review. Games like this get hyped for so long, and the pre-order BS get's pushed down your throat everytime you step into a GameStop, that it seems no game is sold on merit anymore. Personally I won't be impressed with anything until I can actually play a little taste of the game without having to pay id a cent.

      Oh, get off it. Has id ever made a bad game? Yes Quake 2 wasn't exactly the pinnacle of their achievements, but it was fun and had some interesting ideas.

      Do you have to believe the hype? No. Do you need a demo to prove id's worthiness of your cash? I see very few people in your state of mind.

      I have a little thing called loyalty. It has, by en large, served me well. I follow and trust certain people and products until they screw up or do me wrong. Then I don't buy from them again. id has always steered me in the right. I've always enjoyed their work.

      I'm sure a demo will come, but this is a game designed for a single-player experience with a multiplayer option on the back-end. Quake 3 had a net demo because it was meant to work on the net, and needed the kind of testing only an open beta client could provide.

      Doom 3 needed months of tweaking and graphic/sound design to truly make it hit home. 30 minutes of this type of gameplay would be the worst type of storytelling.

      It's like reading a single chapter from a good book: One chapter won't tell you much, but taken as a whole it represents a greater achievement.

      You make a good point about just having faith and the necessity for immersion that you just might not get from a short demo, but game development over the past few years has shown me that companies are starting to get in the habit of banking on their franchises and past sucesses. There are countless instances to mention, but more recently are Deus Ex:IW , the Fallout franchise (BOS), Unreal 2 and Unreal Tournament 2003 (though UT2004 almost makes up for 2003; luckily I never bought UT2003 so I have no grounds to be bitter on...) Developer loyalty may have been a sound philosohpy back in the days of shareware and small development houses, but as the industry has grown I think we all can see how the financial bottom line is quickly taking over the importance of quality control.

      On a more personal level, frankly I thought Quake 3 sucked. Now I've never been one to get completely sucked in by MP-only FPSes, but even for it's time I just wasn't very interested or impressed with the final product. I thought it lacked contect, and really wasn't all that much of an improvement over the multiplayer Quake2. All it seemed to offer was better graphics and a demand for some pretty steep and expensive hardware to run it properly. Unreal Tournament, however, pleasantly suprised me. So I guess it is all relative in the end.

      My initial point was just that I don't see it as beneficial to the consumer for companies to keep neglecting demos. I think that releasing a demo shows the developer's confidence in a product, and overall just gets people in general psyched for more.

      id may release a demo. You may have to wait a little while to get it though. They clearly see there is ample demand for Doom III retail and have made releasing it the first priority. If you must see a demo before a demo is released, just visit any local electonics store around Aug. 5, and I am sure you will see it running on PCs and X boxes in store. You probably can even play it there.

      As far as sliding standards go, id has earned a reputation that many people now trust. The emphasis is on earned. I don't see the pent up demand for this game as evidence of a lessening of standards by consumers.

      It's the principal of the thing. Don't let them stop publishing demos - they will, because it costs them money. Remember Unreal 2? No demo... until later.       Look shareware is only necessary when a company or software publisher is trying to gain the acceptance from the general populace using a low cost solution. It's just like manufacturers putting rebates on particular products... it makes it seem cheaper to the lower income class. But once you're established in the industry, the manufacturer doesn't need to do this anymore. Do you see Microsoft producing "shareware versions" of Microsoft Excel or Powerpoint? Or how about a shareware version of AutoCAD and ProEngineer? The last time I looked, the closest thing to a "shareware" MATLAB was the student version. Why would id Software go through the trouble of making a shareware release? For Quake 3 it sorta made sense since it was primarily a network game and people could really gain the feel of the product if everyone downloaded a demo and played it online, but I really don't see the need for a mostly-single-player version of the game.

      The demo is a playtest really, check if your hardware can run it smoothly.

      Sure, Quakes had nice engines and were pretty nice multiplayer, but not exactly what you'd call good game single. Doom1 had something in it, Half-Life had something in it, they had atmosphere, feeling. Q1/2/3 had nothing at all.

    I don't play newest games (all dull), but I agree that a year old high end card will perform better than newest low end (MX) cards. I *still* play games (namely BF1942 with relatively good res and details) with my Asus V7700 Deluxe (It's a Geforce 2 GTS chip), which is very old now (It has been released at the end of 2000), and I *think* it matches a geforce 4 mx. My next card will definately be a high end one, because it is cheaper on the long run. Well, in fact, maybe not because I don't play games like I did before. I might stick with old games forever and never change my vidcard although I'd like to go DVI/LCD. I'm sick and tired of analog CRT.

    I could swear somewhere in the early marketing phase they said Doom III was more optimized for Nvidia Geforce cards. Where as half-life 2 was better for ATI cards.

      That was what Carmack was saying back during the GeForce 4 TI vs Radeon 8500 days.

      The GeForce 6 6800 Ultra GT vs Radeon X800 XT PE (wish I were making the product names up) seem to have similar performance on the ARB2 render path.

      Great! Doom 3 finally comes out, but I am too old and tied down to play it now. And to top it off, my gaming machine is too slow to play it without a new video card. Why couldn't it have come out a year ago when I still had time and the computing power to play games. WHY!!!!!!

      Its true, I have used some hand me down hardware lately and I am always behind the curve now. I haven't been on top of the technology curve since 2001, then I could play most stuff. Its back to basics for games for me, Sim City. It is too expensive to stay on the cutting edge. I am not going to buy a new computer to play Doom, although it would be fun.

      I guess my point is that software used to be have more of a lag, and could be used with more older systems. Now you need to upgrade your video card every year and your processor/mother board every other year to stay current. That cycle used to be new video card every other year and processor every 3 years. It is crazy to buy a top of the line system and become sub-par in one year. Oh well, you can't stop progress.

    I agree, I don't see why people do this either. It was officially announced only a few years ago and then the *rumored* release date was pushed back *once*. The first *official* release date "this summer" is looking to be correct.

    Screenshots and trailers were released fairly early on to show that it was in fact real.

    id's policy has always been to release things when they're done, and it's always been worth the wait. Doom3 has not taken an inordinatedly long time or anything. Compare this to Duke Nukem Forever and Daikatana. DNF was announced around the time Quake came out. It's still not out, or showing any signs of being out soon. Doom3 was hinted at (as I remember) a little while before RTCW came out and officially announced afterwards. It's officially coming out soon. We've been waiting...what, maybe 3 years since first unofficially hearing about it? Yes, it sucked that it didn't come out last May like was rumored, but that was never officially announced, and thus, can't be counted against id or Doom3.

      yup, Quake3 was SMP capable. But some Quake3 engine games, notably Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory, don't support SMP.

      Whether Doom3 will be SMP capable is another question.

      Doom 3 does to an extent. One of the various quotes I've seen bandied about on the web is that the sound engine (which is entirely software-based) runs in a separate thread... The specific quote I've seen was related to the difficulty id had with thread-synchronisation for the sound and main threads.

      So, yeah, it supports SMP. But as the sound engine takes a few percent of the overall CPU time, it's not going to do a whole lot.

    Not quite. It's my understanding that the games internal clock will be fixed at 60Hz. However, the renderer will be capable of pumping as many frames as the CPU/video card can handle.

    As for 60fps at high resolution, that remains to be seen. If Thief Dark Shadows is any indication (not a good comparison I know), unified lighting isn't exactly a walk in the park - even for the $400+ video cards.

    Gold version releases are strongly looked down apon in the scene due to companies frequently tagging them. The last gold released was Far Cry and it pissed a lot of people off because it WAS tagged. its against scene rules and it will probably be nuked off instantly. Sources being protected usually comes before getting the first release out. Just in case any one cares =)

    the patches are available? PC games always have bugs in them. This is understandable because of the daunting requirement of hardware compatibility for so many different configuration. However, I don't know of too many big popular games that didn't have some pretty nasty bugs in their initial release.

    I've been waiting to upgrade for ages (still have a dual p3-450), I've pretty much decided on the NVIDIA 6800 GT Ultra (or whatever the top of the line 6800 is named), but I'm really not sure about if I should go AMD or Intel:

    - p4 3.4C + asus p4c-800 deluxe

    - athlon64 3200 754 pin + asus k8v deluxe

    - athlon64 3500 939 pin + asus a8v deluxe

    what do people here think would be the best route? For the first time in a LONG time I'm leaning towards AMD more than Intel, but who knows... how well are the athlon64s supported in Linux btw?

    Also I know that PCI Express is coming out, but I'm not interested in waiting another 6 months and then having early-adopter pains.

      Actually, it seems to be out now on the Intel platform. Abit has a couple of nice MBs with 1 16x and 3 1x PCI Express + a couple of regular PCI slots. Lots of other nice features as well.

      My gut feeling on the Athlon platform is to go with the 939 socket instead of the 754. We probably won't see PCI Express on AMD for a couple more months, so personally, I'll be holding off on an upgrade. I generally upgrade my processor once and my video card twice on a single MB, so I want PCI Express for when I upgrade my future mid-range 6800 to a future mid-range 7800 :-)

    There isn't a single thing my 9600 can't run at MAX right now. The thing that will change that is Doom.

    if you read the forums over at sfftech.com, you'll see that a majority of the shuttles out there have no problem running a GeForce 6800 or GeForce 6800 GT (single slot, single molex power). Apparently those 250w power supplies really pack a punch. You can't run the Ultra, at least easily, as it's a double wide/ 2 slot card and literally won't fit in the case if it were to be closed up.

    I got a 9800 pro for $189 2 weeks ago. Your 9600 hasn't been "top notch" for some time now. I seriously doubt it runs Far Cry at maxxed graphics.

    It's the same thing when quake came out. Everyone complained about it not running on 486's.

    The game will ship on either three or four CDs. Despite the hopes of hard-core gamers, though, there will not be a DVD version of the game, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead told CNN/Money.

    "I know some gamers are hoping to use the DVD players on their machines for something other than watching movies, but there are downsides," he said. "For us the cost of the goods and the cost of the replication and having to make two masters just isn't worth it."

    Compelling reason? TWO masters? Man, everyone and their mother has a DVD drive in their comp nowadays. How about doing a DVD ONLY release. Backwards compatibility is great and all, but frankly if you can't afford 20 bucks for a DVD drive and/or don't have one by now, you probably wouldn't buy this game in the first place.

    What's the damn holdup with the transition to DVD games? I'm fed up with this Multi-CD crap.

I'll probably just do what I did with all of my other multi disk games and burn a dvd with all the CDs and a copy of the cd crack on it.

      It just annoys me that they expect us to have bleeding edge technology, and then more or less say that those of us with DVD drives are TOO advanced? Bull, I've had a DVD drive on my system since '99. Did the DVD release of UT2004 cut into sales that badly? I was given to understand the the DVD release sold out really quickly. I waited until they re-released the DVD edition before I purchased it. I dont care about special crap that companies feel they need to include with the DVD releases (headsets, videos, etc). I just want the nice case (dvd cases are great disk and plenty of room for instruction book/cdkey), and the low number of disks.
      On the other hand this doesnt help my conspiracy theory that ID software is getting paid $$$ to make the hardware specs as high as possible by 10+ companies (nvidia, amd, intel, dell, alienware, etc). Someday I will find proof!

    I miss the good 'ol days of having a limited edition shareware version to keep me occupied until the full version was available.

    I have fond memories from about 9 or 10 years ago sitting in IRC channels with other geeks waiting for the files to appear on IDs FTP server, and miracously stumbling upon them one night after they were just released.

    It's too bad ID doesn't do that kind of thing anymore, it was fun to have something as soon as the code was locked down.

    Nah, it was profits, but you have to realize that there's a great deal of cyclicity and seasonality in the chip market and everyone had higher-than-double expectations, which was why the stock was so high. That and the fact that the only up surprise and the most concentrated profit center was in mobile chips and not processors.

    I think the best way to enjoy Doom3 is not reading any of the reviews; after all, at this point you will either play it or you wont. Reading Gamespot's hype about it is pointless, as you only increase your expectations of a game, that lets face it, is not going to set new boundries of gameplay (though I will say nothing of its graphics). Id rather walk to the table with nothing but a couple screen shots in mind and enjoy it as it comes. Atleast then I can say I judged it on its own without (many) preconceptions.

    The parent post is utter crap. Software is the only package that people have tremendous difficulty returning because of restrictions and such, and games are the worst. If a Game is buggy and I don't like it I should be able to return it. If its going to be so hard to return things, throw me a bone by giving me a demo to try it out first. It's being good to the consumer.

    But of course, what do I know? I must be the only one who shares the sentiment of the person you replied to. All the other players who will buy this must love to get screwed by yet another game company.

    It was Remedy Entertainment that created the Max Paynes. (Remedy is those former Future Crew guys who didn't go to FutureMark/MadOnion nor Bitboys.)

    I have this thing called caution. Too many good companies have suddenly put out a piece of crap. Without a reasonable return policy, I won't just spend 60 bucks on 'trust'. However, this point isn't really a problem, I'll just wait and see what people I trust have too say.

    I would like a demo to see how well it runs on my machine. If it will involve 1000 dollar upgrade, I'd like to know in advance. No, I odn't trust the 'recommended' and 'minimal' specs released with a game.

    They could make a demo version that was a side bar to the story. Or perhaps just release the first 30 minutes of gameplay.

    Comparing a game deom to a chapter of a book is probably the stupidest thing I've read today.

    When I go to the book store I don't have to worry about any hardware to get at the contents. I do get a blurb on the jacket, and I don't have to worry about the graphics.

      Your right, the Book chapter analogy fits better for consoles, but for PC games, the demo is like test driving a car.

      Yes, the car will do 200mph, yes the car is electric, yes the car will avoid knocking people over, yes the car will make cups of coffee etc etc etc.

      But without a test drive, I'll never know if I can reach the pedels or see over the steering wheel.

    Man, the just figures, after searching, and hunting, and downloading numerious fakes, viruses, trojans, and god knows what else, I finally get a copy of the beta and it's being released.

    Guess maybe I should take the time to find the Half Life 2 beta, then it will be released.

    oh, and I bet that's why Duke Nuke'm Forever isn't coming out, it's beta never got leaked/stolen/hacked to the general public yet...

    One thing I haven't figured out is what they recommend in terms of an AMD Athlon CPU for a minimum system to work well with Doom 3.

    Is it an Athlon XP 1500+? Or is it an Athlon XP CPU that has a core CPU speed of 1.5 GHz?

    There are quite a places in Duke3D that were actually on top of each other and not cheated, off the top of my head I would say the spiral staircase in Hollywood Holocaust (episode 1 level 1) does show the build engine is capable of rooms over rooms. You can see where they cheat things by using your map and you will sometimes get "transported" somewhere else. There are numerous times that they just flattened sprites and made them solid in order to make bridges and other things to simulate multiple levels. So yes they did cheat by transporting you when you did things like going under water but the build engine is capable of doing rooms over rooms.

    Will this be the first Linux game to support 6 channel audio?

    Can someone here with the know-how speculate on what API id are likely to have used? I was under the impression that the Windows version mixes OpenGL for rendering with DirectInput for interface and probably DirectSound for audio.

    Is OpenAL the likely candidate for Doom 3 Linux audio, or am I misunderstanding how the engine works?

    Besides engines mentioned by other respondants to your post, the Crystal Space game engine also supports this kind of thing.

    I had been considering getting the FX5200.. but of course such a passionate outpouring of utter disgust from the worlds biggest resorvoir of ppl who play too many video games (thats a complement :) certainly set me straight.
